maybe a stronger chassis? How much does the extra HDD weigh? lol
Or maybe they just decided to start including the battery weight in their statements

Considering the GX640 and 740 are some of the lightest on the market, i'd say this makes the 660 a normal weighing book haha.
-
Yeah I know, but since its from MSI, I would think that they would start to keep the weight down on all future notebooks. Yet I am wondering if overall, I should just go for a GX740, since it has bigger screen and weighs less than the GT660. Better for gaming and portability.

Two configurations have shown up on Amazon for pre-order.
Amazon.com: MSI GT660R-003 16-Inch Laptop - Black: Electronics
Amazon.com: MSI GT660R-004 16-Inch Laptop - Black: Electronics
For those hoping there would be a ~$1000 configuration, you may be out of luck; cheapest configuration is $1499. Some specifications looks very good, such as the GDDR5 VRAM on the GTX 285 and USB 3.0 ports, but I'm really hoping the screen resolutions are incorrect...both configurations have 1366x768 screens. At that price, I expect 1600x900 or 1920x1080. -
Nice find, Inferno. Yet there is nothing on MSI's site. Let's hope that we will see resellers offering customization.
-
GDDR5?!
Weren't all the GTX 285m's with GDDR3 in the past?
That means the GTX285m with GDDR5 will be crazy strong,
it would be similar to an ATI Mobility 4870 w/ GDDR5.
I would love to see how they perform, as even GDDR3 versions are strong. -
meraki, more likely is to be mistake.
-
NotEnoughMinerals Notebook Deity
Those are some interesting specs indeed, if only amazon wasn't know for having wrong product descriptions, last time I checked they still say the GX640 comes with a 6cell...
-
Nvidia's official specs for the GTX 285M have no mention of GDDR5 support.
-
Yeah defo a mistake, and if it isn't, ill be damned.
-
NotEnoughMinerals Notebook Deity
Well the one thing we can rule out is that it wasnt a copy and paste job (like amazon is known to do).
It could be possible... -
I'm wondering how much is the new ASUS G53 going to cost. Seems like its a direct competitor to the GT660.
HP Envy 17 seems to be an alternative as well (but costs considerably more), however the design is much nicer.
$1500 for this machine... not as bad as I presumed, but IMO still there are better choices out there. I'll be waiting for more info about Fermi in this machine. -
Amazon info on the graphics card says DDR5, not GDDR5, huge difference.
The difference between the 2 offers is 1 has 500gb hhd the other has 1tb hhd, with $200 difference. -
That sums it up as a typo don't you think ?
-
[email protected] Company Representative
The difference between the two models are:
GT660R-003US: Has 1 x 500GB-7200RPM & Super-Multi ODD
GT660R-004US: Has 2 x 500GB-7200RPM & BD Combo ODD
From what we have from MSI the rest of the specs are the same. -
You can get standard memory on GPU's cant you, it doesnt always have to be GDDR
-
Sure, but DDR5 doesn't exist yet
-
Let alone DDR4. No official spec even agreed upon.
If they actually outfitted the 285M with GDDR5 it'd prevent it from being a lame duck as soon as it's launched. -
Looks like there will be color options for black (or is that dark blue?), and silver for the GT660.
Check the video at 2:00 and 2:36...
http://video.f1cd.ru/view/088cdae6222cb2762b00e22e160366d5/ -
Black. I think the blue-effect is from the sheer amount of light in the showroom and the particular angle it's reflecting off of that plastic.
-
I'd get the silver anyway.
More rumors...
Google Translate
And shown with 3d Glasses..Attached Files:

3D is snake oil to me. I have a lazy right eye and poor depth perception, so even if I thought it was a cool technology, it'd be useless to me
What I'm reading from that is SLI 285M, single 5870 or single 480M? -
120Hz screen is nice without the 3d glasses.
Problem with pages translated through Google is you're never really sure what any of it means.
It could be the GT760 that will get the dual GPU set up....which makes tons more sense. -
That would be awesome, i'd jump on MSI's dual GPU model well quickly haha.
-
The silver choice looks nice, also the GPU options seem good as well. The GT660 doesn't have the MSI GPU Boost (GPU switching) technology right?
-
The i7-720QM doesn't have an IGP so no.
-
Ugggg on the video posted, the notebook info card said GTS 285M which doesnt exist, so I assume its a typo, but with so many typos I just don't know whats true anymore. Doesn't the notebook come with i7 740QM now? Also, with the release of the Asus G53....... I am at a standstill again, either G53 or GT660, both seem to be good, but I'd go for the one with best gfx card and weight, though no detailed info on G53 yet.
-
G51 had poor stock cooling and i think a downclocked version of the 260, if they've not revamped it, itl be even worse in this situation,
Then again MSI haven't been too grand with the 5850.5870 (Although for power draws sake the 285 might be easy inc omparison.)
The 4850 temps were ub3r though, ill give msi that
.
-
But the GT760 also has an i7-720QM and has the MSI GPU Boost Technology which allows for GPU switching.

Intel® Core? i7-720QM Processor (6M Cache, 1.60 GHz) with SPEC Code(s) SLBLY
Either the sign is wrong or "GPU Boost Technology" is a catchall term msi uses for anything that puts the GPU in power saver mode. e.g. downclocking -
NotEnoughMinerals Notebook Deity
or.....740QM gets an IGP???
-
740QM is a higher clocked 720QM. It's the same exact 45nm Clarksfield core without the IGP.
You wont get quads with IGPs until Sandy Bridge. -
Yeh, maybe you right, or perhaps they modified the MB to support an "external" i.e. not in the processor IGB. Is that possible?
This however shows that it may be just for OC purposes.
I just really want them to include this, because if it will be availalbe then this will be the deal killer for me. A high- performance laptop with quite good battery life is exactly what i'm looking for.
I'm considering now MSI GT660/670/760, ASUS G53/ G73, HP ENVY 17. -
NotEnoughMinerals Notebook Deity
I know.... but I'm allowed to dream aren't I? -
Dam guys.... too much new news, it's starting to make me crazy. I have settled on the GT660 with GTX285M, I was hoping for a better gfx card if possible, now there is a GT760, with GTX460M...... now I am contemplating if I would like to carry a few extra pounds........ damit. Why can't MSI just release high end models right away.
-
MSI GT660 laptop comes with passive 3D glasses - Pocket-lint
I'm not positive about it, but I believe passive glasses don't use a 120Hz screen. -
NotEnoughMinerals Notebook Deity
I don't want 3D at all, regardless of what kind it is.
I'd opt for a higher resolution screen any day -
Hmmmmm haha, I am not sure if a higher resolution screen lets you see more detail, but I just want a screen that can let me spot a guy 1000 meters away clearly in a First Person Shooter. Though I do like the fact the GT660 offers 3D, good for movies.
-
I personally think that 3D is the future of gaming. Way better than in movies that's for sure
-
Haha, i knew it would need them lmao, but either way it must be working quite well.
-
NotEnoughMinerals Notebook Deity
3D is so bad for your eyes though, if 3d is the future of gaming a emerging industry is gonna have to be 3d prescription glasses
-
It still looks blue to me...
Hahaha, I hope when the notebooks come out we will actually get to choose the color of the notebook.
-
Yeah its blue alright, i'd say black under weak lighting conditions but navy blue in direct light.
Screen looks ok, although if that MSI logo is mean't to be white, i'd say the whites need a bit of an adjusting haha. -
Hmmmm.... just read that the Asus G53 might come with a 4xx series Fermi card. GTX285M got raped?
I am still getting this notebook though, mainly for the speakers, and fancy lights and buttons
I just hope we can get the GPU upgraded when ordering online. -
Like I posted above, GT660 will get a Fermi card "at a later date" according to bit-tech. My guess is it will be the same GTX 460m that showed up at Computex in the GT760.
The G53 is using a GF106 GPU and there's still no solid info on what model card that will be. -
Hahaha, well I am not up for carrying a GT760, I assume since the G53 is a 15.6' it will weigh less, even less than a GT660. So comparing the two, I think the G53 is on top, I just wished it had some pretty buttons
-
Have you considered the HP Envy 17? It's a "thinner and lighter" 17.3" and the HD5850 in it should be on par with the GF106 GPU.
-
I have, but for me, the laptop is super wide. Which doesn't appeal to me. I am considering the GX740 though.
-
Dam..... with no release date in sight, this is killing me. I've already put off buying a new notebook for 8 months. Waited for Dell XPS 16, then Asus G51, then M15X, then GX640, then GT660, and now waiting to see which gets released first, G53 or GT660/760. Oh boy... I have a lot of patience, but this is ridiculous. Not sure how much longer I can take with my HP Pavilion dv6428ca, so dam slow and old.
