Nice score you got there :D

Do anyone know the design of the AMD sticker for graphic similar to the nVidia one, or is there even one like that? Im thinking of putting it on my pc so it looks...complete :D

@meaker thanks! I just ordered the amd sticker :D

@quadzilla: is your score run at stock or after oc? Of stock then wow @.@

Btw i did a fresh windows install again with my last score and still dead island and witcher 2 acted the same so i think maybe they have some settings conflict or something. Do you know how i can disable the AI thing everyone keep talking about? Im gonna test 820-1200 tomorrow and see if its stable.

One last thing to both meaker and quadzilla, what kind of ac adapter ar you guys using? Like 120w or 150w or 220 or even 300w? I am using mine with 180w, will i need more?

No that was overclocked of course :). 845 core 1000 memory

Best stock runs are usually around 13,500-13,800.

240 watt adapter as that is the stock one for the R3.

Thanks! I think i will get a 240w just to be on the safe side :D

edit: scratch that, couldnt find any that have the same 5.5x2.5 tip to plug in my laptop, nor is there any kind of converter available. Also found out that the 15" from sagers with 6990M also use 180W adapter so yeah, moving on :))

    edit2: 3dmark score OC'd 820/1150

Interesting that my CPU is only a couple of points behind yours (with a 4% OC) and then actually beats it in the physics test :p

hmm i think its fair since yours is an ES with 8MB cache, with a slight OC and yeah congrats :D
both CPU-Z and HWinfo64 show mine run at 798.3Mhz so I'm not too worried, will try to set RAM profile to XMP instead of Default in bios to see how it goes.
    Nice score btw :D

edit: tried XMP and still the same on 3dmark, the score is roughly the same too.

My best CPU score is almost 26,000, I have the screen shot saved somewhere. The CPU i have can hit 30k as it came out of an M18x that was scoring it but i would need some additional cooling ;).

I can push my card alot harder but i held back on the RAM most of the time as you see i only went up 100mhz there.

God, my 5870 feels so tiny. Sad face.

Yeah running at 925/1175 (had to lower the mem a bit) it looks like the 6990M is about 30% faster (at stock ofc). Considering how much I paid for this card I am happy.

After some delay, I finally found a 570m heatsink off a gt780dx, should have a 580M in the 16f2 this weekend with pictures and all etc

Oh , hey guys. Ordered a 6990M (£295 from eBay) for my GX660R along with the paste, pads, new PSU, etc.

My first query is do I have to remove the 'back faceplate thingy' ? bear in mind, this is a GX660R and I really don't want to touch the card in that way..

Also I am glad I have the 5870M heatsink so things are a lot easier in a way and better suited for the 6990M, and the modifications I have to do to it are the same as the 6970M upgrade (From MXM-Upgrade, I hope anyway). Thankfully the Turbo fan will cool it down, in theory...

Anything else I need to worry about? Thanks guys

It is, but my TDP is around ~65W at peak and temps ~97*C prolonged when my CPU is stressed that way. Not good for long-time use. In BF3 though, it'll never exceed 55W so I'm happy.

Those are about the fastest (stable Vantage) frequencies for my card. Time to torture test it with some BF3. . .

Perhaps if I could raise the voltage a couple notches I'd be able to go further, maybe hit 1 GHZ core.

Edit: Just played BF3 @ 950/1685/1900 for an hour, runs much smoother, no artifacting, warping, crashes, etc. Max temp 81*C, I need to bump that voltage up :).

cant wait for the result, im sure it will be smoother than mine :p
it depends, you cannot know until you try and for now you will be the first to put a 6990M into GX660R (just like me :D). Good luck!

Also you may need a 180W or higher PSU just to be safe.
You're too kind :p And your score is quite good TBH.

Im reading the 6990M thread in the Alienware and Sager forum to see the best clocks on lowest voltage to lower temperature some more. Btw, BF3 is a thing of beauty on this machine :D

How high your CPU is getting after playing BF3 ? Mine has crazy temps: over 85 up to 89 on the 4 cores which I think is incredible high while it sits at 48degrees on idle...my GPU is getting to 82.

91*C-94*C on four cores. Hot. Only other games that does this: SC2. GPU overclocked maxes at like 83 or 84*C.

    Hi Dragon290513,

so sorry i havent update this thread been too busy.

But all i can say is the fitment was perfect using the 570m heatsink max temps recorded were 82c running 3d vantage. But as i was using a dell 580m card it throttled through the whole vantage test, so if anyone is going to update to a 580m do it BUT dont use a DELL 580M as the vbios in that throttles, any other manufacture should be ok.

I'll post pic's tonight of the heatsink and all, also i used a msi 570m in that test this worked perfect no throttle/temps were very good 64c max on load.

    570m recorded 3dvantage score of 9500
580m recorded 3dvantage score of 10900 with throttle pretty much the whole test.

Now i dont know if its a power thing or the dell vbios limiting this 580m.
i was using the 180w msi power supply also the dell 580m has a temp throttle at 80 as well.

But just be looking at the temps between the 2 it would seem the 580m sucks good power compared to 570m

no worries man. Too bad the dell version got that throttling issue. Are they working on a fix or something?

Anyway thanks for your valuable information :D. If only we can exterminate the cause for the throttling :(

Have you tried touching the PSU while under load? I'm curious as to how hot it was.

Ok please find pictures for the 570m and 580m which fits perfect as you can see the cards are almost identical bar the 2 missing chips on the 570m

    pic 1 is the 570m
    pic 2 is the 580m
    pic 3 is both compared
pic 4 is the heatsink (as you can see its missing the 2 chips thermal pad)
pic 5 is the heatsink with the new thermal placed to accommodate the 580m

the psu under load for the 580m was not hot at all, nor was it hot for the 570m

pic 1 and 2 are the 570m as you can see no sweat temps great etc

pic 3 and 4 are 580m results which are terrible due to throttling so please if anyone decides to put a 580m USE ANOTHER BRAND NOT DELL. Temps are up there as well, these beats run VERY hot.
I only had a dell to test from my m18x so too me it wasnt worth spending money to buy another brand too test.

the purpose for this whole test was just too see if it. 580m fits and if the bios picks it up and if windows ran perfect, the answer is yes all fits perfect the rest is fine tunning i suppose.

I didnt want to flash the 580m with any other vbios from another vendor just incase i damaged the card which is expensive to replace

thanks i hope this helps future users upgrading

There doesn't appear to be a heck of a lot of difference between the two. I'm wondering how an oc'd 570 would stack up to the 580.

No didn't play with the asynchronous clocking you could prob get more out of it I was happy with how it was as it was good for temps and good stability.

I did run 3dmark 11 but as my copy was not a registered version it would not let me upload but it is was from memory it was just over 3800, I am sure with a better CPU and some fine tuning to the GPU it could hit 4K+ and exceed 16k in 3d mark vantage. The downside to the MSI and sandybridge is the lack of ability to overclock CPU.

Yeah, he had it running at 4.4Ghz on all 4 cores, mad crazy sh!t!

The 580M is also stupidly overclockable, defo best card for it. The 6990M reaches 16K max with a good overclock.

Me and Dragon get about 17k for our setups.
