Ok definitely not that much. Trust me unless you are the most serious of gamers, you won't care. This card will suffice for anything you throw at it.
-
If that's the case I'll be all over the GX640. Might leave me with enough spare cash to pick up a netbook for better portability when necessary.
-
In MSI France they are also talking about Gddr5
http://fr.msi.com/modele/gx640
but ..
MSI is not responsable for their products ... It's quite strange.
(I tried a approximative traduction sorry again for my bad english ^^''') -
i think their saying that they might change anything on the laptop at any time. meaning going from gddr5 to gddr3, witching to an LED screen or even removing their product from their site and act as though it never existed.

This video pops up on google, not sure if its legit:

Its going to have gddr5,
people are saying the us one could be 3 though, -
Probably been posted, but if not, global site does say gddr5
http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=newsdesc&news_no=968
http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=prodpage2&maincat_no=135&cat2_no=271
Does anyone know where this can be bought NOW? I'm from Australia so will be importing it anyway as we get massively ripped off on most electronics here.
So will happily buy from SE Asia. -
Australian sites have been listing the GX640 and 740 on sale since right after CES in January....no idea if anyone's been shipped one though.
-
They also say that there will be different models

nathaniel, maybe in thailand? thats where the first review was made, so I guess you could get it from there? im pretty close to thai too (in Indonesia)
planning on getting that gx640 or the m11x, which was just released here -

Bad news ... gddr3 in US gddr5 in europe (but 500$ more expensive)
and no switchable graphics ... -
NotEnoughMinerals Notebook Deity
That was last month. Apparently MSI released updated specs with the US sku have GDDR5
-
Well as far as im concerned, the release model was GDDR5,
regardless of what they have said, the card is definately going to be GDDR5, they aint stupid like that .. -
I also think it's strange ...
Why make a Gddr3 model ? The price of gddr5 is the same (if not cheaper) than Gddr3 but the performance has a 50% differance... so I don't see the objective of Gddr3 (maybe to have less head-damaged computers ...) -
That does make sense, the temperatures were hot, so GDDR3 would (I believe) make it cooler, although i've been told by people before that GDDR5, newer, more efficient is meant to be cooler, either way the GPU was running hot.
The good news is, ATI do rather well under hot heat, especially running at standard performance (No OC). -
On XoticPC.com, they put the HD5850 with Gddr5!!! That is a good thing if it is right!
For A GX640 with a i5-520, it is 1375$...a great price!
I will see the reviews before to buy it. -
Omg ! I Love You ! I Wanna You To Express You My Love !!!
Jaydaydayrrrrr 55555 !!!! -
At under 6 lbs, that's a pretty solid laptop.
There's no way I'd pay $259 to upgrade to the i5-520M, though. -
thats where the price is cut. Its because of the lower i5 processor that this laptop is so cheap. Still even with the base i5, 2.26-2.5 is not a bad speed, and should be more than enough for any game.
-
That seals it. Pre-ordering first thing tomorrow.
-
1150$ for the GX640 with i5-430, a really good price. How is compared to a Core 2 duo p8600?
Also, another good thing is the
3years parts and labor warranty
1 year global warranty
1 year accidental damage warranty
Wow! -
The i5-520M is $220 on Amazon, so if that's what I wanted I'd much rather buy it with the 430M, sell that, and get the 520M.
-
I saw the GX640 on NCIX.com, so for Canada, for 1189$ with an i5-430.
-
-
you also get the smaller size though. i'm having a hard time deciding between the stock 740 or a 640 with a i5-540 in it.
-
The i5 should be able to handle most games but it a different story when it comes to the i7 7**.
No point getting a dual core in this day and age ... more games are getting optimized for it quads nowadays ... it's the future. -
Fast enough clocks can still overcome more cores. Benchmarks have shown this to be the case with the i7-620M vs the i7-720M. Even in multi-threaded apps the Arrandale dual-core CPU matched or beat the slower clocked i7 quad.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=5802924#post5802924 -
So your saying unless you get a i7- 820 stick with the dual core.
-
All I'm saying is don't judge the CPUs just based on cores.
How much you're willing to spend on CPU power is up to you but when the cost is the same the i7-620M is the better buy than the i7-720QM. -
Agreed, phin has a very valid point.
-
I will still go for the i7 820 , already set my sight on one .. just a matter of time. Never believed in benchmark anyways.
-
video card will bottle neck the system long before the processor does. These aren't ULV processors the i5-430M wont be much of a hindrance, if at all.
-
-
I know it's been confirmed already, but i just got this email from xoticpc.com.
-
At the starting price of $1123, the GX640 is one of the best deals for a gaming laptop, full stop.
However, I'm looking for something to take to university every day back in Australia (~1.5 hour bus ride), so I'm not sure that even at 15.4" and 6lbs the GX640 would be suitable for me, especially for battery life. -
NotEnoughMinerals Notebook Deity
Well I'm a uni student as well. I'm willing to go GX640 as it should get more battery life than the GX740 and the 740 is supposed to get 2+ hours. Perhapas with the smaller screen the GX640 can squeak out 2 1/2+ with low brightness and web browsing and turbo battery mode on
-
that'd be possible. i think it's very portable, especially if you have a decent backpack.
-
NotEnoughMinerals Notebook Deity
Do you think the cooling system could handle the 5850 with DDR5 if I stuck a 820qm in there with it?
-
we'd have to see it first. a lot of people think there will have to be some modifications to the cooling for it to be able to handle this stuff.
-
It's gonna be tough with only one fan.
My old 1651 had a hard time cooling both.
Chassis looks the same so I hope they did something to help with cooling. -
Nice to hear that it's confirmed to have GDDR5 memory. Looks like it will be between the GX640, refreshed (if it ever happens) MBP, and refreshed (one it happens) Studio XPS 16. I love how portable this machine compared to what's inside. Seems like a perfect fit for me. I've never owned an MSI, though, so I'm a bit concerned about build quality.
-
You have to remember GDDR5 runs hotter than GDDR3
-
i have no idea on the cooling, but if I was to stick with the base i5-430, will it handle the cooling for the 5850 w/ GDDR5 and the CPU? The i5 im guessing shouldnt run too hot?
-
All of the i5's and the i7's offered with the system currently should run fine unless you plan to do a lot of overclocking. Its the QMs that people have questions about.
