Also, the screens in all the laptops you mentioned are not the best. If you really want a nice screen, look at the sager np8690 and you can even get the 1680x 1050 res that you want. However, I think the res on the gx660 will be just fine for gaming and it will help your fps a lot like 8-10 fps. Although some don't like lower reses like that ( like me lol) but you will be able to play the newest games at higher details much longer than me (with my 1080p screen)

The E7405 screen has weak brightness but good colors...

Sound system is great, subwoofer included with 4 speakers.

    Thats why I got my GX640! :D

It also can play every game on high or very high settings without any overclocking! Just need to update your gpu driver from the msi website.

You should look at all the videos I uploaded on what the GX640 can do! Look for the new ones I made, because they were made after I updated my drivers!

Well, you can OC the GX660R to 840/1040 clocks perfectly stable and under 80C temps with turbo fan.

Performancewise, the GX660 has the edge, but in the end, both notebooks perform awesomely.

I'm not sure about the 840/1040. I've run into blackouts on my screen when using those clocks and playing for an extended period of time.

I might experiment with a mild overvolt to see if that stabilizes things.

Maybe you got a godly card, haha.

Thanks for your opinion. Thats why I'm thinking about this. I will also use the computer for work not only playing so i need a good screen, but yes 8-10 fps are too fps. Thats why I dont want a full hd 1080p.

However how is the sager np8690 (1680x 1050) compared to GX660/GX740? The GX740 has the same resolution. Thus I dont want the screen to be excessivily glossy/brighting because it hurts my eyes after a long period of work. Additionally I read on other post that the GX660 LED screen looks better than the GX740/GX720.

The best screen I've seen for my taste is the sony vario 17" (16:10 @ 1680x 1050) with low brightness but good clarity, colors and viewing angle. I'm really looking for that.

I've read that the msi GX660 has better construction quality than the GX740 and as a new model, they have fixed some problems. Also it has the 1-touch-button overlocking feature which is very nice.

BTW do you guys know a good cheap seller of these laptops en europe?

Nothing is cheap in Europe when compared to US :/

And it depends on country you are currently living in. And if you're looking for some customization, you can look at DevilTech - High Performance Systems - _Home#they sell clevo's and allow for customization.

Nah i think I'll buy it directly from the US.

Another question: How is the Asus G73 compared to these msi laptops? I've found it very cheap at HIDevolution. Can I trust this site?

    Thanks again guys!

Yup, buying US is the best purchase decision, even if s/h can be a little pricey. We have the same problem here in Canada, where businesses spike up the prices by 10-30% (even more sometimes).

A reliable reseller that I use is GenTechPC for international orders - you may want to check them out :)

Well, from personal experience, I would rate the customer service 10/10. As for shipping, my order was processed and shipped within 24 hours, which is spectacular. I'm not sure how the exempt works (I'm assuming you have a Native Indian card which makes you tax exempt?).

    Covina, California.

And I would rate their service 11/10. 10/10 implies that they do everything excellently, and only that. Ken goes that extra mile for his customers.

Hey guys, I've been flowing this thread for a few weeks now and I was wondering if you could help me out. :)

I just got my GX660 earlier today and did a clean install. Everything works marvelously, with the exception of the webcam. Which apparently has no specific driver and does not quite show up in device manager... well there was an unrecognized device, but I disabled it in hopes that it would try to install again. Now I have no unrecognized device or webcam @_o

    Anyone run into similar issues?

Yes, I have had the same difficulty. I found the drivers on the install CD, and also downloaded them for good measure, but nothing worked. I'd almost think it didn't come with a camera if it wasn't for the fact that I can see the little glass eye.

I'm not sure what the best solution would be. I'd hate to send it back over something this small, but I'm also hesitant to try cracking it open myself to see if the connectors are faulty.

    Hi folks.

Considering buying one of these as a desktop replacement for a currently ailing and very old box of dust.

Have read through the 18 or so pages of most enlightening tech speak but still have a couple of questions.. the in-depth discussions on resolutions has confused me somewhat so please forgive my lack of knowledge.

I would like to hook this up to a 24 inch monitor (DIV-D)for gaming - any issues here?

I would also like to hook it up to a full 1080p 60" plasma to watch movies occasionally - possibly from Itunes? considering purchasing an external drive as well for storage - any issues here?

Bearing in mind that this is replacing an ancient desktop with 2GB of ram and an old x1950 pro card (don't ask), I'm sure I'll be blown away by what I see... but just want to check that I'm not making assumptions on the capabilities of this machine based on newness and shiny-ness :D

    Thanks in advance!

Hi. Finally I've bought the laptop. Thank you guys for the feedback. The computer looks so good as the thread title says :D.

-Build quality is really good, one of the bests I've ever seen.

-Screen quality is just ok. I'm not talking about resolution which obviously affects, I'm talking about viewing angles, contrast, brightness.. It just looks ok, like most of the laptops you can find on the store. If any of you have seen the Asus G51, well its quite similar. I would like it to be like the macbook wich has the same size (15,6") and almost same resolution if I remember well.

-Sound quality is simply perfect. Even better than regular desktop speakers.

-Performance: I've played only Starcraft 2 and well, you can play it on ultra, max res, at playable fps (about 20 fps with the screen filled of units and buildings, and more than 40 during usual play). Its good, but personally I was expecting perfect playing on ultra, with +30 fps during battles. Even tough I must admit I didn't know the 5870 isn't really a 5870. It's a 5870m, which is performs like a 5850 desktop card, so thats why I didn't get impressed at first sight because I own a 4890 ati desktop card and I can play it on ultra all maxed without minor issues. So the fact is that a 5870 is better than a 4890, but 5870m is not, however they perform almost the same.

I still need to see more good benchmarks of the 5870m with Starcraft 2.

-Another minor issue I found is that the turbo overclock button doesnt really improve game performance. Maybe 2-3 fps if you can notice it. I've seen on cpu Z that the CPU jumps from 2.6 to 2.8 ghz, but I don't know if it also overclocks the graphics card.

If you wanna see a good review of the laptop maybe you want to take a look on this site. It's not in English but you can translate it with google translator.

Did you order your laptop in the US? I just ordered mine from J&R and also bought a mouse for $18. Looking at the review you posted, does the GX660-053US already come with a mouse?

Hi Gr33nMonst3r. Yes I ordered it from the US on ebay (techtreasure, or multiwavevideo, they are the same seller) and the laptop didnt come with a mouse. I saw on some reviews that it comes with a mouse and a carry bag, but i think that's only with the gx660r, not ours.

    Greetings!

Well after reading a post of TalonUIUC on the GX660R thread, I want to tell you guys that Windows rates our GX660 memory with the same score (5.9).

My desktop PC with 4 gb DDR2 is rated with a 6.3 lol!!!!

any help here guys? I've read on some forums that sellers are tricking people packing PCs with DDR3 1333 while only quad core i7 can support that frecuency, so any dual core i5/i7 will handle 1333 as 1066.

You can see that with cpuz reporting ram speed as 533 mhz (533*2=1066)

All you need is one of these. The Toslink side goes into your headset, the 3.5mm side goes into your headphone out. Done and done.

EDIT: Hold on, wrong advice. Sorry, that headset also has a microphone, it's throwing me off

Yeah, I just checked the instruction manual and you're right. The mic uses a separate USB connection. So I gave the right info originally.

Our GX660 provides digital output via the headphone jack, so the cable I linked above is all you'll need. Plug the 3.5mm mini plug end into your notebook's headphone jack, and the Toslink side into the SCU (sec. 7 of the instruction manual). You won't need an external sound card or anything like that. Just make sure that you're selecting the Realtek Digital Output as your source under Playback Devices.

I have the logitech zx series speakers, and they are also 5.1, with (3) 3.5mm connections. You just plug them into the 3.5 Jacks on the side, and using the installed software, tell it that you have 5.1 speakers, and BAMN, it works like a charm. So yes this soundcard is 5.1 capable.

My gx660 053US arrived. Im really happy with it. The sound is awesome. Just one thing that really sucks is the touchpad. It is NOT sensitive and you really need to push it to engage it. Other than that its really good. I havent tried any games on it, but I dont own any pc games cause I used to have a mac. Gonna buy Arma 2.

Hey I had the same problem, just play around with the touchpad settings. Right now I have PalmCheck at 2 notches from minimum, Touch Sensitivty at full Light Touch (slider all the way to the left), and EdgeMotion Speed set to Fixed (you can also turn it off). It almost feels like a normal touchpad now.
