No problem. But now I have another problem, I installed the windows again, and the icon that shows up at the lower right cornor during volume and brightness change disappears. Does anyone know how to get it back? The hotkeys still work, but without the icon bothers me. :(

I am starting to see more and more problems with the GX740. Guys give me some advice please, shall I buy it? I'm spending all my graduation money on it with some help, I want it to last for 4-5 years atleast. (I live in Hungary, and this laptop costs a lot compared to the average salary there (around 3x of it)).

I suggest you buy it, it's worth the money. For my problem, it is not the machine's fault, because I used a retail windows dvd to install. Now I fixed it by intalling the system control manager.

Can anyone tell me where to find the control options for the touchpad? I usually have a mouse plugged in but when I do have to use the touchpad, it takes 6 passes just to go from screen side to screen side. Want to increase the sensitivity but all I can find are mouse controls.

The optical drive doesn't use battery when it's not in use, so there's no point in doing that. But yeah, you can disable it.

woohoo finnaly I change laptop.. Just bought this laptop today. The i5 Version
    What important software to install?

First impression the red trim didnt really nice looks like cheap stuff when I touch it.
And the keyboard layout. backspace, enter button too small.

In windows 7 can we change the taskbar just like in windows xp? which they show the name of the program too

my windows didnt see that i have webcam do i need to install some driver for it?

i open cpuz and at the graphic it shows like this http://img830.imageshack.us/img830/6125/85004407.png
is it correct that the code name\revision\shaders\type\bus width is blank?

I installed ATI Catalyst 10.6(ati overdrive) and MSI afterburner will it void my warranty if I use it? I never use it before
I try to unlock the overdrive and I can't lock it anymore I didn't read the warning =.=
What if I reinstall the windows will it be lock?

Also If I'm not wrong 1 or 2 month ago I read for the GX640 there is some voltage or something that need to be avoided, kinda forget.

For the webcam I already solve it I just need to press the button =.=

for someone who's fairly newbish - is flashing the VBIOS completley needed when I get my gx740?.. what are the advantages exactly?

I mean I'm expecting to uninstall bloatware, but that's about it, after i've done that I expect to start installing proggrames etc..

What's completely necessary for me to do when I get my new system, that doesn't involve me maybe Bricking it lol.

If you are newbish and havn't flashed before I wouldnt recommend it, as it is risky and may cause your pc to not work and I did the flash and didn't gain anything really.

I had never flashed my VBIOS either but found the procedures to do it earlier in this thread pretty simple. I get around 12 C lower temps when net browsing or other non-gaming activities so seems worth it to me.

hmm my idle gpu temp is around 64c I just played zeno clash maxed out 6XAA and 16xAF and the temps were @90-94ish.. but the fan stayed @ 30% according to the ati gadget thing I have... why would the fans only be at 30% given such a temp? - Ps i got the lappy today

I'd appreciate some feedback on this, I'm worried the lappy might me faulty, I know laptops run hot but idling at 65c seems very hot, and 90 whilst gaming is also?

Though if the fans are staying at 30% it makes me think the laptop obviously doesn't have a problem with such temps, I dunno. Some knowledge would be great to put my mind at rest

It depends alot on the weather/climate. At a very warm day my will idle at about the same temps, 63-67c even while at this moment its at 57-61c but its night.
Long story short, 65c is most likely normal, depending on your weather.

(Mine is also overclocked at 835/1090mhz.)

Does anyone have the OLD vbios available for the GX740? If someone is wiling to pull it off their card and post it I'd appreciate it. I know MSI posted a new one for you guys but I'm specifically looking for the older one.

According to GPU-Z, the vBIOS of my 5870 is:
    012.020.000.004.036532

Interested? Here is the default version (200/1000@0,9V | 700/1000@1,15V). BTW, this is the barebone vBIOS, not the retail GX740.

Could anyone tell me why I'm getting 22FPS in World of Warcraft? I can't seem to figure it out. Updated all my drivers, etc. Am I missing something?

This is turning out to be the worst computer experience I've ever had and I regret going MSI.

    - Screen is next to worthless since 50% of my tasks are Media-Music software. It looks like It's on power save mode all the time, even though it's on max brightness and I've toyed with the other screen settings.

    - Games are at 15-25 FPS. Everything is unplayable, even though I updated the drivers. I called tech support several times and no one seems to want to help or know what's going on.

    - Tech Support is only 5 days a week and when I did call them, I get disrespectful kids who aren't knowledgable at all and try to end the call as fast as possible. I'd prefer Dell's Indians over MSI's reps anyday of the week.

    - Customer Service is LONG DISTANCE (international) - that's right, no toll free numbers, as per tech support.

    - When I first had the unit, I had to do a system restore b/c nothing would install.

    - Warranty is trash. Sure it's 3 years, but the customer has to pay for the shipping, which is 50$, meaning if you get a broken keyboard or touchpad (something around 50$), you have to pay for it.

Just utter garbage and disappointment. A gaming laptop that can't game, nor can it handle media applications due to its screen that looks as bad as a 10 year old dinosaur monitor. I think I may just grab the G73 b/c its problems after problems.

No wonder MSI is a 'small' company in Canada/US. All other companies that I've tried such as HP/Dell/Asus have top notch warranties and solid technical support (in my experience).

-wow that sucks its not indestructible

Ill give ya $78 for it, it that helps.

LOL Dell sucks even worse now that theres no call centre in Edm, try calling India latley?

I have no idea about your World of Warcraft performance, but the fact that other games are only 15-25 fps surprises me. If that occurs with more than 4 or 5 badly optimized games on the market today, I'd like to know what kind of uber games you're actually playing.

My unit has worked and installed perfectly since day 1. Also, the only thing odd thing about MSI that I've found is that they already had the hard drive split into two drives (which was easy to fix with a couple clicks). My screen has also impressed me... maybe we have different standards?

Perhaps the FPS issues is due to the driver problem the poster above you mentioned. But it's just unreal when it comes to gaming in terms of awful FPS.

As for the screen, my previous Asus and Dell screens were top notch and very bright. I really never thought I'd have to look for specific screens b/c every laptop me or my family has ever owned came with a great screen so I assumed it was a 'standard' in the market (should of known better :p).

It's just difficult to compose music/edit videos/edit music (any media software, really) unless I'm at school in a LAB where there's 50 different lights on the ceiling. Previous models I had I could compose music and edit in a dark room with 0 problems.

I just wonder why LED/HD (Backlit) isn't a standard in the market. I'm sure any and every consume would be willing to pay 50-100$ more on their gaming systems for it. The GX740 is 1349$ +tax+ship, so it's not cheap but not pricey. I'd consider it the perfect laptop with a real screen and working drivers (apparently it's ATI's fault on the driver part).

If only MSI had a gallery here in Canada close by me, I could of seen it first hand before buying it from California.

    And @ Ghola
    LOL
Fun & games aside, with 24/7 support it's just peace of mind. If my laptop breaks down on a Friday night, I want the warranty/tech fix set up ASAP because I go to school 10 months/year, so I can't really afford to be computerless for a long amount of time, like most students. Plus, what happens if my keyboard were to fall off 1 month later? 50$ out of my pocket b/c it's either 1) buy the keyboard for 50$ or 2) pay UPS 50$, wait 2 weeks. ...50$ for a student is groceries for the week, which other companies cover both ways service (dell/asus/hp).

@Voodooi: Shall the brightness issue really be a problem you can still plug-in an external monitor on your computer when doing your music editing!
But I am pretty sure you will get used to the brightness very quickly... In some sense I much prefer it compared to too bright panel who kill my eyes after working for more than 30 minutes :) I do agree that for games it could have been brighter though ;-)

    1. Personaly I have no problem with the screen brightness but I guess it could be slightly brighter, but being a VERY cheap gaming laptop I guess you cant expect too much.

    2. Your FPS issues could be one of two problems, either its the drivers as the 10.7 are known to have issues for some, so that's kind of on ati/amd. The other problem could be you expecting it to be able to max out all setting, it is a laptop afterall and it does not go well with all settings maxed out, especially if you are trying to run like Crysis on Ultra high with full AA etc, Normaly you can atleast run on the second highest graphics in the most demanding games. A tip from me to increase FPS alot but not change the experience too much is turn off AA and Vsync. About WoWs bad FPS, even if it runs on a very old engine its still VERY demanding on the PC so FPS in the lower 20's isnt uncommon in places such as Dalaran or a 25man raid, a way to easily increase FPS ALOT here too is to trun off shadows completly (you wont miss it after a few mins of playing) and it effectively doubles your FPS, also earlier mentioned AA/Vsync can contribute alot more FPS.

    3. Cant comment on that, all I got to say is that Dell's customer care is ALOT worse normaly.

4-6. Same here, haven't had any problems (yet, Knock on wood) so can't comment really on such things, but you probably are right there, appart from earlier mentioned Dell support as Dell's support IS REALLY bad. Though I might be biased as I've worked with HP support so conflict of interest I guess.

Conclusion: It is a gaming laptop and calling it such doesn't mean it'll be able to handle maxed out graphics in all new games with crisp perfect screen quality, as it is afterall a gaming "Laptop", and a very cheap one at that. I agree the screen could have a brighter mode though.

(Sorry for the wall of text)

EDIT: About brightness, I remember like 7 years back I'd use this program called "powerstrip", perhaps it would work to increase the brightness to the screen? Also, sorry for my poor english, it isnt my naitive language.
