Thanks for the answer! Meanwhile I also found Alternate :)
I called them, but they said they have no clue when will they have to GX 740 in stock. It can be up to 2 months :(

Anyway I think I will order from them, I am not in a hurry anyway, I just wanted to spend my holiday allowance money...

    Thanks anyway!

    Another question to everybody:
I read it on AMD/Ati's website that I should update the driver from MSI. Is that true? I mean every time they update the driver MSI will be behind them.

Also I saw it in an unboxing video and there is a driver cd inside the box. You had to use that one, or the notebook was ok at the start?

you can get the drivers from MSI and the ATi drivers from AMD, if you want the neweset drivers

    any and all will work

    -

I gave up long ago of getting a GX740 and I'm very glad I did

I have questions about the temps of the GX740, not the barebones. What temps do you guys have? cpu of mine idles at around 60, about 70-76 in game, and gpu idles 60-62, usually 80-85 max in game, some games can beup to 90. Are these temps normal or too high?

But I could buy mine and I couldn't buy the GX740, plus I got it much cheaper with the parts I wanted when I wantedCPU,HD,WIFI.

Unfortunately, I haven't bought these heatsinks online, just in a random computer shop somewhere in Poland :). The fins used to be straight, I used a knife to bend them, so they would fit in my laptop's chassis.

    Sorry for the late reply.

My older temps were around 85C with the same settings. That means that these small heatsinks reduced temps of my Radeon by a whopping 15C :).

Hey guys, I placed my order today for the MSI E7405 (GX740) with i5-430M and 500GB 7200rpm HDD from jr.com in the States. I read through the company's policies and practices on displaying "Back Order" and "Out of Stock" tags on their website items, and the item had no such tags at the time of my order, nor does it afterwards.

Also, I've been searching this thread, but have been mostly unable to find a good comprehensive listing of game benchmarks for the GX740. If there are, could anyone point me to them? Maybe this is something worthy of a new thread?

Correction both have HM55, but i bet that's allready been said. I don't have patiance to go through all the 100 pages.

    Since the HM55 chipset :
Does that mean the Gx740 supports switchable graphics ?

I'm curious to know, because in so far this laptop would be the only one with such a powerfull GPU and switchable graphics.

Huh, these heatsinks do look weird, especially after you bended them ;) I purchased these, which are more classical... : Cooltek VGA-RAM Cooler - Kupfer - beste Kühlung! bei eBay.de: Modding (endet 03.07.10 21:17:47 MESZ)
Recieved them this morning, so I guess I'll try out tonight. I hope they can somewhat meet the same performance as yours (although I haven't modded my backplate yet, except from removing the metal mesh :( )

errr.. I used my fingers and my arms and ripped it off ? :D

About 2-3°C difference I think. Although ambient air is really warm these days in my appartment (definitely above 30°C) and I would need to try in a normal environment to see true results :)

Ok, here's what I've juste done with my newly acquired copper heatsinks :

I have 3 heatsinks left now. Waiting for some advice, I'm hesitating. I can't place them on the cpu heatpipe since there's not enough room for them there. I could place some on the cpu heatsink directly, but I'm not sure if it would make good contact since there's a sort of gap there.

I could also place some on the gpu heatpipe, but I'm not sure this is good idea either. If everyone advises me to just keep it this way, then I will... :)

Pretty happy already, just from idling I'm about 5-6°C cooler.

is it possible, could all that copper just store more heat?
    more bad than good?

i wonder if theres a really low profile fan out somewhere to wedge in the laptop?

Hmm, that machine seems to be running too hot.

Actual users, through undervolting, have gained huge temp drops,

some even up to about 70~80'c during load in furmark.

Look around, I think Marecki posted his temp readings somewhere...

Thank you first, but I am unable to see your pictures. What I really worry about is my idle temps, which are usually around 60 for both cpu and gpu. What did you have?

According to GPU-Z, my GPU load is zero and my temp. is 65. The only thing running is a Gears of War installation.

On a side note, I'm finding that my laptop stays fairly cool, as the only heat I feel is being blown from the vent, and isn't really heating the chassis too much. I find this surprising, although I can really only say from experience of 30 min. gaming intervals

My GPU idles around 45C. Tops in Furmark extreme burning mode is 70C. Room temperature between 23C and 25C. But all that is after some serious modding.

OMG! Can't believe that. I never do the Furmark test, but in usual games, my temps can be 77-85C. I wish I could do some modding, but I'm afraid that I will do some damage to the lap. Do you guys know if there is anywhere do this for you?

There aren't OH issues as far as i can see,

Idle temps look to be cooler yeah,

Max clocks, unless the voltage has been changed won't be any cooler i dont think.

It's "almost" the same vBIOS as posted here!
    But will check it.

    MSI has slow testers :)

OK OK, there is slightly difference! The vBIOS-info and the UVD clocks.
Lowering to 400/600 is better than 500/1000.

    Edit:
    Uh, early monday :)
It's not the UVD, which is different. It's the high load 2D setting (clockinfo 02)
    Sry

Arctic Cooling Thermal Adhesive. You can purchase it on ebay, just like I did. It works wonders, just make sure the layer is really thin. Apply some pressure while heating up with a hair dryer (for approx. 3-4mins).
