BR36532.018 is my current vbios. Should I flash immediately? Def like the rig so far... Oh what's a good program for keeping track of the temperature of each part... gpu/cpu etc.

    Thanks

HWMonitor for everything. If you want an on screen display get MSI afteburner.

I never installed any of MSI's software, that might explain it.

Holy crap. Got it up and running with new bios/vbios/AMD drivers and I just quickly loaded up borderlands from steam (which I bought on black friday deal for like 2.50) my old POS thinkpad was running it at like 600x480. Needless to say it was an upgrade haha.

Love the screen too, not sure why everyone was giving it hate. Maybe I just haven't been spoiled by a super high quality LED and therefore can stick around with the LCD world for a bit. Going to try and give Metro 2033 as much of an attempt as I can, Maybe I'll be able to max it out on Medium.

    Pumped, and for 899 I can't complain.

That's probably true. I came from an LED MacBook Pro and use an LED iMac and work, and the screen on the GX740 absolutely pales in comparison. Tweaking the color settings in the driver control panel helps a bit, but it's still an inferior panel.

I wouldn't either, especially considering the system from which you've upgraded.

    Just received mine today.

I ordered the Matte screen 1440x900 version (the glossy 1680x1050 is tricky to find in Europe).

All looks good so far. Build quality is better than i expected.

Screen is poor to average but it'll do the job. I'll try get some pics of it in case anyone was thinking of going for the WSXGA screen too.

I haven't tried it more than a bit of tweaking on the desktop but it seems nice and quiet so far.

So here's my temps after running 3D mark 06.

This is stock, no vbios change or anything, laptop an hour old.

    This seem ok?

    (got 13k in 3dmark06 btw).

edit: people were suggesting that the vbios undervolted the gpu to 1.05 from 1.15 but mine seems to go to 1.05 max. Is that strange considering i haven't re-flashed the vbios.

Some 260US versions come with vbios preflashed. Also temps during 3dmark isnt a good indication of ur real life gaming situations. U will probably be hitting the mid to high 80's mark.

13k in 3dmark 06? That is crazy for stock.

NVM your resolution was probably 720p since you have 1440x900 version.

    Hello

I´m having serious problems with bsod on my MSI:

I have run Memtest86 20+ cycles without finding any errors. I have also done like 4 formats and tried varoius drivers etc. Nothing helps. The bluescreens appear very randomly, often while downloading something from internet or down to another computer (I always use WiFi).
Could someone please help me read the .dmp file windows creates so i get an idea of what´s causing the blue screens? I have uploaded a zip file. I´m thinking about contacting the reseller, but thought i might try here first.

    Thx!

The minidump indicates you've got a driver problem. Update all your drivers to the latest revision and hopefully that should take care of it. If it doesn't try dropping back to a previous revision.

Thank You for the quick answer. Ok, so it doesn´t seem to be hardware related. Good or bad, i don´t know...would have maybe been easier if it was hardware related-just contact reseller and let them fix it.

Is there any possibility to narrow down to what driver is causing it? As i mentioned, i mostly experience it while downloading or streaming data through WiFi. Could it possibly be the WiFi drivers? When i formatted i dl:ed all the latest drivers from MSI, including WiFi. Did not help. I got the Intel version in mine, so the driver on MSI homepage is dated back to 2010-01-26.

You could probably narrow it down to the specific driver if you use the Microsoft debugger and run an in-depth analysis. If you're using an Intel card go to intel.com and download the latest drivers, the one on the MSI page is terribly out of date, this is true of all the drivers on that page. You're better off going to the vendors for each of your pieces of hardware and downloading the drivers from their webpage so you get the latest version.

This might be a longshot, but search Google or the Microsoft knowledge base for hotfix KB977178-v2. It's a patch related sleep mode. I got a BSOD similar to the one you had, and installing the hotfix seems to have sorted it. You would have to request the file from Microsoft, but it's free and you should receive it within a few minutes of submitting your information.

After the last format i didn't install the WiFi drivers at all. Sofar i haven´t experienced any more bluescreens. And the WiFi seems to work just as well without proper drivers installed.

    GX740.

Best gaming resolution out of the three.

Unless you get the GX660 which has 1366x768,

I'd def recommend this rig if you can get it on the cheap. I only paid 899 including taxes shipping and what not after a MIR and Amazon Credit (which I bought gifts with immediately so it was basically cash). Check for end of year sales/after christmas.

I'm really impressed with it so far, screen doesn't seem dim or whatever the comments are earlier in this thread, I'm a resolution junkie and the screen has enough for me.

Just make sure to load up the new vbios and bios if you have to as it dramatically decreases temps.

    Good luck.

yes as long as it fits into the same MXM slot. But you're better of OC'ing than replacing the card altogether... Dunno why you would want to replace the 5870 anyways.

can anyone answer me this as a sure fact:
does msi gx740/gx660r has a reverse mxm slot like asus(that makes it upgradable by asus gpu only) or does it have mxm slot and is upgradable like a sager or alieware??

is there any msi model that can use sli/crossfire??

MXM in MSI laptops is not reversed. It is a proprietary MXM.
I've never heard of any SLI/CF laptops from MSI.

You can assume this, however there are other factors to consider when upgrading an MXM video card, such as vBIOS and BIOS compatibility, the amount of power that the laptop's motherboard can deliver through the MXM port, etc. It's not only about the connector.

So i'm about to purchase the MSI GX740 from neweggs, does anyone have any problem with their GX740? I used to have a Asus G71gx but i got tired of asus's bull driver and bsod/incompatibilities bullcrap. Originially I was thinking asus g73jh but after the 71gx i was like nahhhh... I read some of the threads and i think the overall consensus is that there isn't much problem with the MSI Gx740 such as heating/driver/bad performance. I'm using for desktop replacement. Another reason is because the one i'm getting has a 2 year warranty unlike most high end gaming laptops thats only 1 year bull warranty.

GX740 has a 3 year warranty, and it's a good choice. I was going to get the G73 as well but then I found that to be potentialy problematic. Went for the GX740 and it's been perfect so far

Bear in mind that every laptop from any place has a chance of failing out of the box even if it's new. This is because not every computer can be assembled exactly the same even with the same components. But as for my MSI GX740 from newegg, my lappy's been stable. Just don't forget to check the version of the vbios if you do buy it and update it if it's not up-to-date.

Hi guys, I bought the GX740 with I7 3 months ago and everything was working fine till today when I decided to upgrade my display driver from the MSI website. The problem is the ati 5870 driver won't install and I get the FAIL message for the display driver in the install log. Prior to this, I used driver sweeper and removed all ATI related files for a clean install for the new version from MSI. I tried getting the display driver from the ATI website but I get the same fail message. I did a system restore at the moment but you guys have any ideas? I've also flashed my vbios to the newest version. I've been looking around and trying to find solutions online and offline to no avail... Also for some odd reason, my CCC won't open prior to all this.

I just bought 2 4 gig sticks of ram to get this beast up to 8 total.... but what's the most efficient way to open her up? Google has been really bad on this case, as I'm getting tons of searchs on basically just how to buy an open box or that it has 4 gigs of ram naturally. Gahh... is there somewhere on MSI's website?

I swear to god I just wasted 15 mins looking, where I could've just started unscrewing and went at it.
