I'm just trying 2.99GHz and it seems to have fixed the issue.

Although I think one adverse effect is that there's a slight mouse freeze sometimes if there's high GPU load (less than 1 second).

What happened to your CPU heatpipe? Looks like it caved in.

It did indeed, while I was manipulating it during my experiments with 920XM QS. Too much power in my fingers, too much Kung Fu in my life ;). Performance stays the same though, so nothing to worry about.

Chipset heatsink. I am willing to change it to a 100% copper one (and maybe a bit bigger), I need to find one that will fit first.

Yes, however it has been modified as well:

I am planning to drill some more holes, especially along the GPU heatsink heatpipe, as I added a few heatsinks on top of it.

Plus, CoolerMaster Notepal W2 (3-fan), I will change it to Zalman ZM-NC3000U though.

    PS.
About the finger: I am not a big guy, MSI makes soft heatpipes, I was surprised myself how soft it was.

Yeah I had one MSI heatsink that I also did that too (while trying to mod).

Funny thing is, while I was heating up the heatpipe (to try to solder some copper to it), the heatpipe poped back into shape (and then puffed up even more than usual). I guess since there is soemthing in there (gas/water I don't even know), you would expect it to happen. Though I don't recommend heating it to a really high temp because parts start falling off the heatpipe (As I was soldering parts on, others were falling off lol).

@Marecki_clf you could try to make a big aluminium/copper heatpipe from the cpu to the chipset. This could lower the chipset temperature when the computer is in idle (less fan noise) and then the computer is calculatating the chipset would get more heat (so the fan would accelerate).

This only works if the fan's power is determined by the chipset (it's the case in the gx640 )

Theoretically I could use a heatpipe from my previous MSI laptop, MS-1722 (GX720), which covers both the CPU and the chipset, and adjust it to my current MS-1727. In my opinion, however, it's all too much hassle and not worth the effort. I think it will be much easier and more efficient to find a (copper) heatsink from some broken desktop motherboard, adjust it to fit my laptop's chassis and attach it on top of the chipset. Something like this:

This laptop indeed has 4+1 speakers, however they work in stereo mode. Surround can be software simulated using the SRS Premium Sound application (its' properties merge with Realtek audio).

Hey, I installed the latest ALPS Pointing Device drivers to my GX740 and now the touchpad is really hard to use, pretty much impossible to click a link and use properly.

So, I now read that the laptop has Synaptics instead of ALPS, should I uninstall the touchpad drivers totally and install the newest Synaptics driver?

When I had this laptop, I did not install SRS or the audio drivers, and used the driver from Microsoft only.

This allowed me to run the laptop in Quadrophonic configuration, with all 4 speakers functioning distinctly.

Just a heads-up for those who want to run these speakers in Quad mode.

FYI, an uninstall of the drivers does not grant you these, I believe only the clean install and never even touching the MSI audio drivers was the only way to let the speakers run in Quad mode.

    Hope this helps some people.

only thing I hate about MSI is they're too lazy to update their driver database.

btw, I want to upgrade my memory, can I buy it from another manufacturer because I can't find any product of the Taiwanese's for sale in US

I don't think You need any audio adapter for Z-5500 speakers.

I do use external speakers set (Logitech X-230). It's a 2.1 set, my speaker configuration is stereo. However, even when I use laptop without external speakers, I leave the sound settings as they are.

You reallt dont need to OC this to get more performance out of games. Yeah by all means OC it to see what you can OC it to but dont do it to get more performance. You dont need it, it runs Crysis in the highest settings with 8xAA. Seriously, what other machine can do that. Dont OC it for performance sake

Hey guys, I've got the greyish plastic piece, that's in the SD cardplace when purchased the laptop, stuck. I was wondering, what would be the best way to get it out without damaging the laptop? When I push it, it moves backwards but that's basically all it does...

When you push it in, it should click. When it does that, release it, and it should pop out enough to pull it from the system. If it sticks, gentle wiggling of the plastic piece should free it.

Yeah, but when I push it it goes back, but doesn't "click". It just moves back, but that doesn't free it from the SD cardplace. I've got the express card above it, works fine, I push it and it click but the SD doesn't do like that. It used to do that, but now it's plain stuck and just moves a little bit back and front.

Once when I liften the PC, I somehow accidentally got it out of the SD place. But I decided to put it carefully and correctly back in to see if it gets stuck again. Oh well, it got stuck again.

    740 doesn't have turbo mode.

But mine is manually OC'ed anyway, TDE is useless except for those who are afraid to OC it themselves.

Which laptop coolers do You guys use to cool down Your GX740s? Would the Zalman ZM-NC3000U be a good one, especially with my modded bottom cover? What other coolers would You recommend? Could You post Your temps at full load with/without a cooler that You use?

    I have NC 2000.
With back cover it gets about 80C
With back cover off, around 75C. All around 26C ambient. Measured in-game with MSI afterburner, with games that get 99% GPU usage.

Sometimes with a low ambient (20C) it's pretty low, not even breaking 70 at times.

Thanks for the info. I'd assume that the NC3000U would produce a higher airflow due to the massive fan. I will consider buying one, but I'll wait for other opinions first. +rep :)

The NC2000 isn't really a good fit, because upper parts of the cooler don't have the vent holes. So the airflow to the GPU isn't that great because only a small part of the GPU gets exposed to the part with the vent holes.

All You need is a small Philips screwdriver and some good thermal compound. With GX740, changing a CPU is not more difficult than with a desktop PC. Even all the screws are of the same size, so no need to worry about messing them up.

I take off the bottom cover and disassemble the fan (8 screws all together). It takes 3mins and both heatsinks are accessible from both sides. I use compressed air to blow any dust away.

    hi there!

    I have this e7405 since 6 months(france) and i love it !
i have a cooler which is certainly usefull.
i was reading many posts tonight here to think about upgrading vbios or bios..
on msi i just find a bios file , which contain a "e1727ims.10e" file..
-is that a bios or vbios or both?
-where can i find a vbios?
my vbios version was initially , and is :BR357575.027
    drivers version is actually 8.821-110126a-112965C-ATI

i will look for upgrading my cpu, for sure..
-where do you prefer to sell yours ?i never did this and don't especially know when should i do it, in the beginning of a hardware product life or at the end when everything is so cheaper.?
as far as i have read tonight..i'll be able to goes up to I7 920 xm or something similar but not anything newest like I7 2000 something..
    what about xeon?

Does anyone knows from wich reseller can we have the correct ram (1066) ?
    how can i upgrade from 4 g to 8 ( i sometimes read 6, sometimes 8.)
i thing the method is to sell the 2*2 and to buy ..2*4? 2*3 exists?

after reading all those cools subjects you talked about,i have to tell that i went there to ask something particular i didn't find anywhere..

how can i manage to find xp64 drivers (especially for my network card) ?
i hardly manage to have a decent dual boot because of the seven which use too much ram for my work, but i can't manage to find anything which could goes on my xp64 .
the first time i installed it , the networks did work, not any "!" sign on the harware but then..i don't know what happened.

thanks for any answer that could be "usefull."
