So the new vbios lowers overclocking, but does it improve performance at stock clocks perhaps? I haven't overclocked this machine since it plays all the new games at max settings, 1680x1050, 2xAA, 45fps. No need to OC and rist damaging the machine really...

EDIT: Cept for The Fu*king Witcher 2!

Why all of you is so mad about 920xm? 840qm is almost the same in terms of speed and costs twice as low, and generate less heat. ??????

I got mine from a German wholesaler for 250€ (about 350$). You need a massive cooling modification and Throttlestop to do such an OC. And an Laptop cooling stand is also a good idea ;)

I see. The 840QM is useless I think. It's 1.86Ghz. I can already reach 1.76Ghz on mine and that one is unlikely to go more than 2.00Ghz since it has a locked multiplier. Sad day.
I guess I'm just gonna start saving for a Sandy Bridge.

can you provide some pics? Better CPU cooling?
(Kannst ja auch mal im NBJ Forum im X7811 Thread vorbeischauen. Kommst doch aus D, oder? ;))

I put my clocks back down to 880/1090.

less than 1 framerate difference (54 to 55) is really not worth the extra 6 degrees.

I don't know why, but with this new VBios my 740 keeps crashing after 10 minutes of playing any game (say, in this case witcher 2, at default 700/1000). I am rolling back to 1727_027 , the new one seems really bad. Old one works fine at OC of 820/1035.

I had to OC my 450m to 3.2GHz just to get 35fps in this game. I was getting 25fps in the prologue, but Ch1 and after run betweek 30-45fps fine.

Make sure you're running the 11.5 catalyst drivers and that you disable Catalyst AI.

Turns out that if you use the GoG version of the game, the problem is gone. if you bought your game at Steam or D2D, all you have to do is get the GoG .exe file and paul.dll file and overwrite your old ones and you'll get an instant 10-20fps boost.

    Just backup your saves first.

I´m about to upgrade my RAM to Kingston HyperX 1600MHz CL9 2x4GB.
Will these work @ 1066MHz CL6 as stated in their PnP profile? Anyone got any experience to share about these babies?

    I have the stock i5 430M...

Why do you want the Hyper-X?
You get no noticeable performance benefits, will be bottlenecked by other components anyway, and 4GB is enough for normal users unless you're using virtual machines or manipulating huge photos.

Well I would prefer having 8GB of RAM instead of 4GB because I do some heavy stuff that requires that amount of memory + having a RAM-drive is pretty handy :)

Should I go for Crucial of Corsair instead of the HyperX?

HyperX is specifically designed for Sandy Bridge chipsets that can take advantage of 1600MHz.
There are cheaper options for 2X4GB RAM that can be had for around $70.

Ok cool thanks. I was just thinking about the 1066MHz CL6 on the HyperX.
Most 2x4GB kits runs @ CL7 or above.

I can get the HyperX for 85$ from a store, only tested...

Up next is the CPU upgrade, 840qm or 920xm? :)

840qm sh...t the bed when he saw the true ultimate performance of 920/940XM :D
920xm is the way to go, i bought one as well (167 USD OEM version) and will be installing it next week. Since it has unlocked multipliers and you can change them in TS, it becomes even faster than some Q core sandy bridges :D

I also have 430M now,and i'm not going to complain, it's fine OC'd to 3.15GHz but i really want to test 920XM, and to have max from my gx740, like you ^^

about ram... well...i bought hyperX before, same ones that you were thinking of and i will say - DO NOT BUY THEM, becouse they will not allow you to change your bus speed via setFSB,on stock memory (asinTech - lol from where that company comes from ?? )in gx740 goes to 166 fsb like a dream, hyperx immediatley freezed my system after i went to fsb 134 (2mhz more- hating life !!) -shame on you hyperx (maybe i got poor batch? but on stock clck's worked just fine)

But the ones with blue radiator seems to be just fine considering almost 90% users have them in gxXXX series -wierd isn't it ?
here they are - part number is KHX1600C9S3K2/8G
    hope that helps

    cheers m8 :)

Ummm and... yes...what thermal paste did you used ? did you accidently pick your mum's nivea hand lotion by mistake ? :D
Just jokeing. :) User named Archewander (940XM) reported temps like 85"C with standard cooling and no OC

i will have my 920XM on saturday (so excited!!!) and i will report my temps as well...i use IC Diamond 7ct

I have the same one :D (zalman NC3000) and you can expect 3-6 'C drop on CPU

I am planning to do a mod just like this one

    http://s1228.photobucket.com/albums/ee445/CacheFlow123/

Becouse mobility is most important for me, and even after cooling mod i want to be able to move my laptop without thinking about that somethink inside may fell off and cause a damage....

This mod is very effective but i fear i dont want to modify the heatpipe like he did...sooo risky...you work on it to much...and a small tiny hole in there will ruin your day...till the end of the year :p

Will get some small heatsinks to put on cpu+gpu later today.

hmm... it is safe to hit up to max 90 just to be sure it will never overheat. So 2.4GHz should be just fine i think.

What i would like to know is your benchmark results

CPU Score in 3dMark Vantage- performance (2.2 or 2.4GHz@4)
    with cinebench r10 or 11.5

I'd love to see your heatsinks attached on the photo :D

Running some benchmarks right now. Will post the results later :)

Trying 2.5GHz 4-core and GPU @ 900MHz = reboot. Think it´s the PSU. Can you recommend a good psu? 180W?

    EDIT: [IMG]

Thats just running CPU @ 140x15 and GPU @ 900MHz

I dod not get the heatsinks today, they will arrive tomorrow it seems...

I don't see the appeal of the 920XM or 940XM. The 5870 is easily the bottleneck of this machine for gaming.
I would just save up the money and buy an M18X with Sandy Bridge instead.

Btw do you know how to use setfsb to autostart @ 140bclk? I will run 140x17 for 4-core load. Trying to find a nice multiplier for 2-core and 1-core now :)

    EDIT: Found it "Setfsb.exe -w1 -s140"

I´m trying both multiplier+bclk. 140bclk @ multi x17 (2380MHz) seems to be ok. Temps around 78-80c all cores loaded 100%

    1-core @ 140blck x26 (3640MHz) is around 72-74c
