at 1.15v no problems at 860mhz, but at stock 1.05, i cant go more than 800 becouse i am getting 3 sec black screens in games time to time, propably becouse of my card, witch is more V hungry :)

Next week i will flash the bios to 1.1v and test 860 or 900mhz

by the way, 920xm roxzzz in games ! 430m looks like a cheap comparing to this cpu

The 1.0F BIOS works fine for me as well. My system would freeze for ~20s at boot, when I had Logitech Rumble Pad 2 (+ its wireless controller) connected to USB. Now it boots fine and without any freezing.

No, it doesn't, however You can put an additional HDD in an optical bay HDD caddy. You will loose the optical drive though... Who uses them today anyway? ;)

Is it possible to make the 5870M use other then 3d clocks when browsing in firefox? Dont want to disable hardware acceleration, but 800MHz seems a bit heavy for just browsing...

If you have PowerPlay enabled it will go to idle automatically, unless you have other graphic apps open.

500/1000 is the standard UVD clock. That's normal.

I am looking for some temp data from people with similar settings. Basically, my problem is that under Eco-Off (power plan = balanced), My i7-720QM hits 1.7 GHz constantly across all cores. (remember 1.6 is that normal clock). My Temps keep ramping up until hits 94C in about 3 minutes and then it clocks down to 0.6 GHz and repeats the cycle.

Now, Eco = Gaming mode seems to work fine. Temps stabilize at 61C. Clocks dynamically changing frequently and rapidly from 2.2 GHz to 2.7 GHz at all times.

So I am looking for some numbers from ppl with no overclocks, i7-720QM, Eco Engine Off, balanced power plan. Just give me the max temp or the trend or if possible monitor clocks and tell me what happens there plz.

    Thanks

Tomorrow i will pick up GX740 with i5, not overclocked, for around 500 euro with warranty. I need to get quick informations how to cool down this lappy without warranty void. I don't plan to overclock this and i purchased small memory heatsinks (to place them on gpu heatsink). i just want to play Diablo 3 / BF 3 with low-medium on native resolution.

    hi all,
I'm new to this forum; my language is not english, so excuse me in case of grammar mistakes. I have a gxt740 (the version with the i5), and I'm having some trouble in updating my vga drivers. Finally I succeeded in installing the drivers n. 8.690.0.0000, but I'm worried cause these drivers were released 1 yr ago. There aren't new vga drivers for our laptops? I dont think so, well, I hope. Catalyst Install Manager cant find new ones...do you guys confirm that?

thank you, and sorry for my bad english!

You need to find a direct download if the notebook driver installer refuses to recognise your machine as valid.

What kind of memory timings is correct for this laptop?

I have the stock PC3-10666 memory, but the timings show 7-7-7-20 in CPU-Z. I'm planning to upgrade to 2x4GB PC3-10666 and those timings are usually 9-9-9-25... I've done some searches and it appears that only PC3-8500 have 7-7-7-20 timings...

I know this won't help but that's exactly what I was wondering last week. No solution yet. HWINFo64 will show you alternate timings in memory details. (CPUZ shows it too i think for different clocks).

Mine is usually 8-8-8-24. Also CPUZ says Max bandwitdh is PC3-10700G (667 MHz). Ive never heard of that standard but I'll do some searching.

Have you noticed any performance increase after changing the RAM memory from the stock 2x2GB 1066MHz to 2x4GB 1333MHz?

    Yep, that's a pity.
Though you can OC the GX740 a little, i managed to do a stable 145FSB :) Had to drill some holes in the bottom of the laptop to keep it under 90*C.

I've upgraded my CPU from the stock i5 450m to an i7 840QM and 3dmark Vantage now shows a nice P10200 with the cpu running on 145FSB and the GPU cloked at 860/1060MHz

Just curious, is it possible to upgrade the graphics of the GX740, I saw it uses the MXM 3.0 GPU's.

Hi there everyone, Im new to the forum, I have the I5 version of the msi gx740 and for months have been wondering what the best settings in general are to run the newest games with stable frame rates?

Such as settings in the catalyst control centre and things like that? Also what the best options are to keep it from getting above 90 degrees?

I have installed the latest vbios but it always seems to go above 90 when playing games such as bf3 on auto settings which are set to high, but I never seem to get stable frame rates on games other than counterstrike and older games is that down to the hardware or am I doing something wrong?

My frame rates on bf3 go anywhere from 14 to 50 fps at best I really want to be having 60 - 80 frames in an online shooter as frame loss can cause major issues.

Also can anyone recommend any cooling solutions for the laptop?

    Thanks for your help guys.

If your laptop is getting to above 90c, you need to reapply thermal paste or just make sure you keep it on hard surfaces (no blankets, sheets, placemats, etc).

My GX740 CPU or GPU doesn't ever get above 90C.

Make sure you are running the latest GPU graphics. Thats about it.

Yes it's possible to OC the GPU, use CCC or MSI Afterburner or Sapphire Trixx

As for applying paste. You have to remove the fans first, then unscrew the heatsinks and then clean out the old paste and put in the new paste.

Use a cooler and keep the fans dusted. Use the MSI afterburner's on screen display to see temps in-game.

Yes it is. I had a Zalman NC2000 cooler before which was considered pretty good but the U3 drops my temps 10C better than the Zalman. Much cheaper too, $20 compared to $50.

Hello everyone, I am an owner of the E7405-080US for quite some time now (GX740 in Europe). However, I just recently updated my VBIOS to the 0.31 version and I started getting problems with overheating. I disabled all the overclocks and everyhing, but the card easily hits 95-100~ degrees and drops its usage down to 0% to save itself. (which obviously kills FPS)

I opened it up and cleaned the vent and the sinks and there was SOME improvement, but it still is overheating. So I think I can do some modding on the whole thing as the warranty expired anyway. Could you suggest anything already tested ? (that does not involve changing the back cover).

Moreover, having in mind the above, I have been always wondering how did you guys actually manage to overclock the i5-430m? There are absolutely no options in the BIOS menu for me :/

Thanks in advance for all the replies.

Im not an expert but I'd think that you should reflash the old bios and see if the problem goes away.

As for warranty, I think it should be still fine. Cleaning or flashing BIOS shouldn't void it. And I don't think they can tell you overclocked if you revert it back but idk for sure.

Don't use the new vBIOS, the 0.27 or w/e it is is much more stable.

As for OC'ing the i5-430m. Let me dig up a guide I made earlier.
    Here:

The clock generator for setFSB is ICS9LPRS113AKLF

I tried reading through the thread, but its like looking for a needle in a haystack :)

    Thanks a lot.

One more thing, do you have a working link towards the 0.27 VBIOS version? ( there was even an edited version with a lower voltage back in the thread, however the link was broken)

    EDIT:

Also can you share your CPU OC settings? I'm especially interested in ur Throttlestop's TDP settings and if you have enabled HPET or not?

I got to 100 in SetFSB, but upon running prime, the CPU drops from x19 multiplier to x17 ?:|

Does anyone have an older and more stable vbios backup that they wouldn't mind uploading? I can't seem to find any sites that have older GX740 bios. Anyways, I recently flashed to the latest revision, and now my computer is having occasional stuttering and freezing problems in some games (so far it has mostly happened in HL: EP1-2 and Fallout NV) and it did not have these problems on my previous vbios.

Hey Bearclaw I was wondering if you could send me a link to your Vbios and CPU settings.

I've known about CPU overclocking for a while and I found I can get to about 3.1Ghz without crashing but on certain intense games it will crash at 3.1Ghz I found 3Ghz to be stable on all games I've played.

    Cheers!
