    MSI GX740, i7-740, HD5870, 4gb

The temperature in the rest ~ 60 degrees.
The temperature when I am playing is approaching ~ 96 degrees, which sometimes results in closing the application and exit to the system.
I read a lot but I was not able to find clear answers to my questions.

    1. What is the minimum voltage while maintaining gpu800/ram1000 the "clock info 00"?
    2. What are the minimum (safe) value of gpu/ram/volt for the "clock info 05"?
(I read that making any changes in value in the "clock info 5" is not recommended. But my msi is using this profile for all of the time excluding gaming and it is just too hot. )

The general idea is to reduce the voltage while maintaining clocked without losing stability. I had already modified the bios, but only the frequency not the voltage.
I would be grateful for any help. :)

I have 1.125V with 915/1080 and it gets to about 82C on the memory (GPU Temp #2). It's a bit lower in the winter and a bit higher in the summer :p.

You wrote the maximum values for the stable use. I would like to keep the 800/1000 and reduce the voltage(VDDC) as much as possible but with stable work of my hd5870. Let say for example:
    -what is the max(stable) value of gpu/ram if i set voltage @ 0.9 or @ 0.65 ?

My idea for overheating is to reduce voltage but with keeping the freq of gpu/ram.
Just like i wrote before i had done already some changes with the freq but not with voltage. For this moment i got only one notebook, so it is better for me to find out more about it before i do something wrong. I think i have seen some tablets on this forum with range of "working" freq gpu/ram for specified voltage but i can't find it now. :/

My msi has very poor cooling system and i7-740 1gen so when I play it heats up to the level of boiling water ... : |

Do you mean flashing (like white flashes) or flickering?

well, it looks like the whole screen shake up and down in a tiny distance but very quickly
this happens when gpu switch its frequency between different powerplay profiles, if i play 3d games which means the gpu stays at 700/1000 then i have no such problem

I have a few suggestions for you.

Recently, I had flickering issues when running monitor + laptop LCD together.
Just like you describe, the flickering was not present when running at 3D clocks.

    What eventually fixed it was:
    1) uninstalling ALL video drivers (using add/remove),
    2) uninstall MSI afterburner or other OC software
    3) restart and
    4) reinstalling the newest video driver and CCC.

Other possible solutions (I know the vids are old but the fix might work)
    1) Fix flickering on 2 screen setups overclocking 5870/5850/5770/5750 - YouTube

    2) Screen Flicker With ATI Cards Problem Fix! - Used on XFX 5870 Crossfire - YouTube

    i'll check those videos later
    thx anyway

I had similar problems in two cases:

    1. Graphics card memory clock set below 1000 MHz
    I checked 900/800/600/under 500 is even worse

    2. Voltage in gaming mode at 1.125

In second case notebook shutdown and what is funny PSU also, diode on the psu stop flashing. After reconnected to the power it start to flashing again.

Hi all! First post so go easy on me, lol

I have owned a GX740 (i5 ver) for about 18 months and generally a very solid machine. However recently I have noticed some issues with overheating and running certain apps so I thought I would update the graphics drivers. However installing any ATI drivers newer than the ones shipped with the laptop result in the loss of the 1680 x 1050 resolution on the WSXGA monitor... has anyone else experienced this?? How can I update drivers and retain this resolution?

    Any help very much appreciated.

Does anybody know if the connector under the GPU heatpipe supports mSATA? I tried asking from the MSI support, but they don't know anything.

I've had my GX740 for 2 years and just today the S-Bar (touch sensitive buttons) stopped working. No lights and no reaction to being pressed. Has anyone else had this issue?

I sold my GX740 on Sunday, and I have to say, good riddance MSI. I've said it before - their RMA department is awful. How I got the GX740 is a long story.

Ares is still out there, though - he went to the new owner with an empty optical bay caddy (owner bought the Vertex 2 I put in for another PC), an upgrade to 8gb DDR3-1333 (G.Skill), and a Dell DW1520 (Broadcom, 2x2) wireless card. And some damage in the bottom left corner of the screen's back panel... sigh, MSI. You break more than you fix.

For all my complaining, though, I enjoyed the GX740 while I had it. Stable, fast. Would have been OCable but for the horrible cooling - RMA fixed that, somewhat. Oh, and, the "the V2 won't be detected on some reboots, because it's too slow to start". I never figured out whether MSI, Intel, or OCZ were to blame for that.

Anyone tried 12.8 Drivers on their 5870? It's now saying the card is a FirePro card... Probably a device ID naming fail on their part but does it have any effect on the performance?

No it wont, it will be mini PCI-E.

You see, that's a perfect excuse for a couple of 3dmark runs.

Does anybody know, if GX740 supports 8GB DDR3 SO-DIMMS? I know that the IMC in 1st gen. i7s does, i just want to make sure before I proceed with the upgrade.

To answer my own question: GX740 with 1st gen. i7 works with 8GB SO-SIMMs. Mine is running 2x8GB now.

You could try re-installing the chipset drivers.

I have a Bios question, has anyone updated them and what are the fixes? I'm still on BIOS Version E1727IG6.106 from 2009. Should I change them to 1727_10f from MSI's website for the GX740?

Just started testing some bitcoin and litecoin mining with my MS-1727, anyone else doing this and what are your Hashs like?

When I bitcoin, I'm able to play games but not with litecoin.

I've really enjoyed the GX740 the last couple of years but I fear it may be nearing the end of it's life for me, LCD front bezel is cracked and I can't close the dang thing without risking it cracking more, so it's essentially a desktop now. As far as I can tell, most places don't carry parts for it and MSI's parts department sent me a list of parts essentially saying they had nothing in stock for it anymore. May be time to retire it soon which is too bad!
