Hey everyone. I was wondering if there was a detailed guide to reapplying the thermal paste for the gx740 cpu/gpu, preferably with a disassembly guide?

I just ordered arctic silver 5 off newegg but since I've never done it before I was hoping for a guide with pictures and such. Scrolling back 30ish pages only landed me a few posts saying to remove some screws and scraping off the old paste.

    Thanks in advance!

I see that's the only difference but when I try to flash at 920 core 1080 memory my Pc will freeze when playing a hardcore game like dota 2 or crysis 2 and ill have to hard restart. I was using the 0.31 bios though so ill try with this.

yeah don't use the 0.31, that vBIOS is really terrible, I can't even OC like 100 MHz with that.

Thanks ! Got it running on 115 FSB and 35 TPD (just as you I believe). Seems stable, however I also ordered the notepal u3 just in case as my current cooler isn't doing very well.

    Moreover, thanks for the Vbios.

Is it possible however to keep the FSB constant at 115 through restarts? It keeps resetting to default on reboot.

nope it's not possible without some advanced tweaking.

You can use some launch parameters for setfsb and use task scheduler to run it upon reboot.

eg: setfsb.exe -blah. I tried to do this before but it was too much hassle and I was getting freezes, but it's probably possible.

It only resets through a cold boot (shut down completely and then reboot), if you restart from Windows it will be fine.

p.s. the notepal U3 works really well for me. I never move my laptop because I use my netbook for mobile stuff so I keep the back cover off. With that method the U3 cooler drops my temps by 15C.

Thanks. I am actually thinking of 'creating' a new back cover from scratch. Something aluminium probably to increase the airflow, as having no back cover at all seems a bit dangerous to me.

If you move it around you would need a backcover. If you're like me and the laptop stays in the same place and only moves when I move to school or to co-op jobs then back cover is not necessary, since the cooler will be sort of the back cover.

I was in the same position as you when I got my IC Diamond. Use can find disassembly guides here. Disassembly guides | MSI HQ User-to-User FAQ

There is no GX740 guide so try to use GX720. I think that looks similar to GX740 internals. (I used GT740 at the time because I didn't have the GX720 guide but it was still pretty similar).

As for the repaste, I don't know if I found a guide but I searched online a lot.

Basically, take the heatsinks off like the guide shows. Expose the processor and gpu chip as shown (DON'T take the CPU/GPU off the socket. It is not necessary. Just the copper heatsinks.)
Use rubbing alcohol (90% or higher Isopropyl alcohol). Put droplets of alcohol on clean coffee filter pieces. Use this "wet" coffee filter to wipe off the old grey thermal paste.
Don't leave residue of old paste on any surfaces.
Apply the paste on the chip (not the heatsink). The amount and style (line method or dot method) to apply will depend on your paste. In this case you have arctic silver and you will have to search what amount other people are using. I suggest line method for the CPU because it is very rectangular.
Put the heatsink on and press it firmly (the motherboard will flex a little bit but not too much).
Once the surfaces make contact, do not detach them or you will need to clean and repaste. So slide the vents near the fans in place first.
Tighten your screws well and follow assembly guide.

Hint: Clean the heatsink first. Then do the chip. A clean chip will shine like a mirror.
Hint: There is no need to paste both the GPU and CPU at the same time. I suggest only repaste the CPU assemble it and check your temps.
Hint: The GPU will be more complex to repaste because it will have the Core + the memory controller chips to be cleaned and repasted. Make sure you have enough paste to do all surfaces by looking at the pics, because once you detach the heatsink from a CPU/GPU you can never just put it back together without repasting (it will leave air bubbles). I think you will need about 2 to 3 times as much paste as used on the CPU.
You will find that there a "thermal pads" on the memory controller. It is debateable whether you can reuse them. Some suggest to not take the risk and buy new ones. I replaced the old pads with my thermal paste and was happy with my results.

Sry if my instructions are a little difficult. I am running out of time but post here if you need more help.

Ok this is interesting. My GPU clocks are stuck at 700 MHz core, 1000 mem. I found this today and I haven't made any video driver updates, overclocking etc for a long time.

The clocks are supposed to go down at about 100 MHz Core, 150 Mhz memory when idle/no graphically intensive tasks.

    Any ideas?

    Already did. No changes.

So far the only thing I found that will bring clocks back down is to enable AMD overdrive but set at default clocks.

Already uninstalled MSI afterburner although I never actually used it for overclocking.

Hey Bearclaw, my notepal arrived today. I did just like you did and removed the back cover. I put 1 of the fan directly on the gpu, one on cpu and one around the ram~.
GPU is Clocked to 860/1040 (how do u unlock it to 920 anyhow?). When I Run Furmark (pretty much everything on, making it a beast of a test) temps go up to 90 (from the sensors that furmark is reading at least). How does furmark work out for you? I'm concerned that my problem might be more related to thermal paste depreciation rather than active cooling.

    EDIT:

BTW under full load for over 10minutes both CPU cores stay at 73-74~ - so at least this is al right :)

I think mine goes up to around 90 as well, probably in the 85-90 range, I can't really remember. I'll test it more when I get home. I do know though, when I play games it never goes over 80C.

I have MX-4 paste in mine, repasted about 4 months ago.

Use SapphireTrixx to OC to 860+, or use MSI Afterburner and unlock the unofficial overclocking mode.

Right now I actually have mine at 915/1085.

Also be sure to blow out your fans.

Okay I just checked FurMark, it's about 78C max reported by FurMark. But the temp I usually go by is the MemIO temp which is usually 6-8 C higher, so I get about 86C max.

Okay about my stuck clocks problem...

What's the best (quickest and most idiot-proof) way of flashing the vBios? And what's the best version to use?

If I remember correctly, Bearclaw, you said earlier the latest one was actually worse?

Anyone know of any places that still sell the gx740s or any variants? I'd like to pick one up somewhere and slap a 6990 in it. I just can't get used to the 16:9 ratio of the newer laptops.

027 VBIOS allows for higher overclocking with lower voltage, when compared to 031 VBIOS (in case of my setup).

Thank you for the excellent info! The cpu repasting went pretty good and I'm noticing about 5 degree difference.

Didn't bother with the gpu repaste as it sounded a little more complicated than the cpu and my gpu temps are pretty low already.

So I haven't got a chance to reflash the bios yet. So my clocks are still stuck on high performance.

However, something interesting I found in GPU-Z.
Bus Interface is stuck in PCIe 1.1 x16... even in while running AMD's Mecha Demo which puts 99% load on the GPU.

I am supposed to see PCIe 2.1 right?

I think Im gonna have to do an RMA.

What is the best WUXGA screen to replace the original WSXGA+ panel. In an old thread there were recommendations for LTN170CT03, LQ170M1LW2A and LP171WU1-TL A2 is there any new panels that are better?

I prefer matte screen and a nice addition would be that I could get one from europe, not a must.

edit: is there any 8 or 10-bit IPS panels that fit?

I honestly doubt that there are any "new" panels out there, since all notebook manufacturers shifted from 16:10 screens to 16:9 ones. I have no idea about IPS panels that would fit GX740. If You find any, please share the knowledge :).

    Hi guys,

I've just tried to replace the i7-720qm in my x7811 (1727 barebone) with a i3-380m. Don't ask why. :p I get no screen and sometimes it shuts down imidiately. Could there be a general problem? I don't think so.
I've got it at a low price from eBay but declared as possible with no function or defect.
Currently the unlocked GX740 BIOS is flashed.
    I know there was a X7811 available with a i3-330m.
    Any hints? thx

    Hey guys,

I'm new and sorry if I'm ignorant or don't word this correctly but I'm in the process of wanting to flash my vbios with version 23 to correct the overheating issue that everyone and their dog has. What I was wondering was if the current 12.3 ati driver was compatible with that version of vbios or if there is a better combination?

For the record, it seems that I fixed it now.

When I tried to install AMD catalyst CCC display driver 12.4 it would still show me 12.3. So I uninstalled all AMD drivers and installed 12.4 which in turn also made my clocks behave normal now.
