Has anyone looked into trying an ivy bridge CPU yet? -
~~ Taken from Ivy Bridge Wiki ~~
Ivy Bridge is the codename for Intel's 22 nm die shrink of the Sandy Bridge microarchitecture based on tri-gate ("3D") transistors. Ivy Bridge processors will be backwards-compatible with the Sandy Bridge platform, but might require a firmware update (vendor specific). Intel has released new 7-series Panther Point chipsets with integrated USB 3.0 to complement Ivy Bridge.
I contacted ExoticPC today and chatted with them. Here is the log:
Chat Content:
Derek S.: Thanks for Choosing Xotic PC, It's great to have you John Outcalt! Before we begin, have you had any previous contact with anybody at Xotic PC before? And may I have your email address to send you a log of our conversation?
John Outcalt: Hi. I have a Force 16F2. I was wondering if the BIOS is capable of supporting Ivy-Bridge processors out of the box or if it needs a "Firmware Upgrade." If it needs a firmware upgrade, would you guys be able to provide that for me?
I was contacted by email after my purchase and asked to do a review. My email address is [email protected]
Derek S.: Thank you for that
John Outcalt: np
Derek S.: From what we've been told by reps is that the bios on the 16F2 won't support the newer cards
John Outcalt: All Ivy-bridge processors are backwards compatible with Sandy-Bridge motherboards.
Intel says you may need a Firmware upgrade for the BIOS.
Derek S.: as far as we know that doesn't exist on the laptop bios
If it's supported, that'd be something that MSI would provide. We don't develop new firmware for the bios
John Outcalt: MSI does not post the BIOS for the 16F2... Their site for the 16F2-012 always comes up with 404 error... Page not found. Can you contact MSI and tell them to fix the support site for the 16F2-012 please?
Derek S.: I have no way of contacting them to make that change
From what we are told, the 16F2 is not capable of supporting Ivy Bridge
John Outcalt: Can someone at ExoticPC contact MSI since they are suppliers of their products and tell them to fix the support site because ATM there is no way of getting an upgraded BIOS from MSI for this board.
I mean I paid almost 1800 dollars for this laptop it would be nice to have BIOS upgrades..... You know what I mean?
Derek S.: I understand, but we simply buy the MSI product. Other than that relationship, we have no affiliation with them. They may have it somewhere else on their site. You should be able to contact their support and ask if one exists
it's possible one doesn't
John Outcalt: Trying to contact MSI is like trying to talk to a wall... It just doesn't respond, ever... I would figure as a supplier of their products you should have some way of being in direct contact, no? What are my options for getting an upgraded bios from them?
Derek S.: I can not say, we do not take any part of that. I apologize that their support is lackluster, but when it comes to a model they've told us doesn't support Ivy Bridge and then to contact them and ask for a firmware update to do so, we'd be talking to the same wall
John Outcalt: Ok... I see this is going nowhere. So 1800 dollars and impossible to get a firmware upgrade?
Derek S.: The official word from MSI to us is that the 16F2 does not support it. I apologize that it's the case, but we are not firmware developers, we build the machines. If they don't offer the firmware, we can't either. It's not as easy as flipping a switch, it actually is pretty indepth to make that happen.
John Outcalt: That is not the problem. They have the upgraded bios link on their site but when you click the link you get a "404, Page Not Found." So they do have an upgraded BIOS from the one that shipped on my board, but the link is dead... Do you get my drift? The BIOS is available but the link is dead. Is there any way that ExoticPC can procure the bios and send it to my email?
Derek S.: If you have the current bios version I can go on google and take a look for it see if I can find a download link, but we have no way to contact MSI and have them fix their site. That'd be something that their service would have to get taken care of
John Outcalt: It is the only board out of all the 16F2s that has broken links for the bios files... I just don't get it....
the 16f2-012...
Trust me I've googled a million times...
Derek S.: I just talked to our service department, the guys that handle this kind of request, and they have not heard of a bios upgrade to enable IB compatibility
John Outcalt: I just want availibility to an upgraded bios... It doesn't matter if it has Ivy Bridge support... I just want availibility to upgraded BIOS because BIOS upgrades tend to fix major issues .... Right... lol...
Derek S.: We are unable to contact MSI to have them fix that. If you provide me the bios version, I can look into finding it, but we can't make their link work. You have to contact their service to have that happen
John Outcalt: ok hold on
ok so the link for the 16f2-012 sends you to the 683dx page but you get a 404 not found... So can I use a 683DX bios with this board?
Derek S.: I can't guarantee that. That's something you'll want to contact them for. I convinced our service guy to send an email to their service team, but that's the best that we can do. Other than that, you'll want to contact their service directly
John Outcalt: it sends you here → http://www.msi.com/product/nb/GT683DX.html#/?div=Driver&os=All
notice the GT683DX in the link
Derek S.: I understand. I have clicked it. I can't fix their site though
we are making them aware of the issue for you, but we can't guarantee it will fix anything
MSI corporate has been emailed
John Outcalt: Ok... thank you.
Derek S.: You're welcome
John Outcalt: Have a nice day. -
If you use the GT683/GT683DX/GT685 BIOS, your right-side USB port probably won't work.
The broken link was intended to lead to the GT683DX's page: MSI Global Notebook - GT683DX(GT683DXR). -
hacktrix2006 Hold My Vodka, I going to kill my GPU
Hi all, Ivy Bridge Firmware for MS-16F2 i don't think will be coming out i am still waiting on MSI to reply to my last e-mail but got nothing as it stands.
See its not only the Bios that needs a Update its also the ME Firmware as well.
Just checked my Support Ticket from MSI. Got this
"Dear customer,
We don't have plan to support Ivy Bridge processor and 600 series GPU for this model.
"
Now we know that the 600 series will work without issues but sadly IB is a no go. -

I always thought it would be up to the community to piece something together.

Can anyone afford to buy an Ivy Bridge processor and put it in one of these things to see if it works without a bios upgrade... It just might... I was told by HP once that my laptop only supported two processors but it supported every single Core 2 Duo I tried in it... Even the Core 2 Extreme.... Just saying.... It even supported Intel-VT, which they said wouldn't work....
Check this article out → http://vr-zone.com/articles/ivy-bridge-should-work-in-h67-and-p67-motherboards/11077.html
It says that Ivy Bridge processors will work in H67 Mobos.... How much different is the HM67? I'm pretty sure with some microcode updates we can get this board to support Ivy Bridge processors. Seeing as how the on-board video is completely disabled on this board there shouldn't be too many problems. The CPU fits in the socket, we know that much.
Here is a good thread on backward compatibility with Ivy Bridge. Meaker, you know about this thread → http://forum.notebookreview.com/hardware-components-aftermarket-upgrades/636978-ivy-bridge-mobile-3920xm-tested.html
There was a thread by a Chinese guy that actually tried to put one of these Ivy Bridge processors in a HM67 board and he said that the chip fit but the board would not boot. Flashing LEDs....
According to reliable sources, the performance increase offered by Ivy Bridge processors is not good enough to justify the price or the hassle to get one of these chips to work on our boards. The CPU performance increase over Sandy Bridge is negligible. It would only be desirable if you were running integrated graphics only, as it offers a 25 - 68 percent increase over previous integrated graphics solutions. Basically, it would be pointless for us to try to upgrade to Ivy Bridge... not worth the effort or money...
I have read several places that the Ivy Bridge CPU's use the same LGA1155 socket as the Sandy Bridge mobos... Supposedly, the H61, H67, P67 and Z68 chipsets will work... I haven't found much out on the HM67... Man, there's lots of misleading information out there... I guess it's up to someone to actually try it... I just read on a forum that no mobile or low wattage versions of Sandy Bridge Chipsets will support Ivy Bridge CPUs. -
i clearly understand ur not responsible ..
i already tried the ctrl+fn+home .. nothing happens
when i start the laptop the fan sound is loud .. leds are working .. so its the bios ... help? -

If you are trying to get a bios/firmware update for a "barebone" notebook model DO NOT go to the MSI website. The bios/firmware is different between the "branded" and "barebone" notebooks. If you purchased a "barebone" notebook model your reseller must supply any available bios and firmware updates. If your reseller refuses to supply the "barebone" bios/firmware updates email me with the contact info below and your exact notebook model number. I understand you wrote "16F2-012 always comes up with 404 error" but this is not the correct bios/firmware for the barebone (whitebook) notebook models. There is no offical download site for MSI barebone notebook bios/firmware updates as they are to be supplied by your notebook reseller. For the barebone notebook drivers/utilities they can be downloaded from the MSI website. Some will not be compatible with the barebone model as they are "advanced" features only supported on the MSI branded notebook models.
The previous generation to ivy bridge MS-16F2-012 w/GTX570M, MS-16F2-004 w/GTX560M, MS-16F2-019 w/GTX580M, so far will not support ivy bridge CPU's per MSI or offically support GTX 6xxM VGA cards. This is not to say that you cannot unoffically get the GTX 6xxM VGA to function. It may be possible but is not supported by the manufacture. -

Do not download the bios and firmware from there. If you need the latest bios and firmware email me at the link below in my signature and i can send you the latest. -
hacktrix2006 Hold My Vodka, I going to kill my GPU
If so give me a PM and i will lend a hand.
Was it only the bios you've updated or both the bios and EC.
They way i did it myself was to have two files on the USB Flash drive that was formated in FAT32.
one called AMIBOOT.ROM and the other called E16F2IG6.ROM.
Now with the CMOS Battery Disconnect and the normal battery disconnected i placed the USB stick into the laptop then press the Power button to fully drain any power from the system.
Then after that i placed in the power brick and then spammed CTRL+ Num 7 i kept trying and trying that combo then mine came back.
Make sure batterys are disconnected.
Other then that contact your reseller and see if they can help. -
Hi Hacktrix,
Just wondering, Im thinking about flashing my 16f2 with 30R, I downloaded it from the 1st page link (thanks btw) and I notice the Original file is only 64k size while AHCI and other are 4096k size. Is that alright?
Also, which bat file should I use? Is it related to the disk mode in BIOS? RAID, AHCI etc. This BIOS option is set to AHCI at the moment.
Thanks! -
Kingpinzero ROUND ONE,FIGHT! You Win!
Hi guys, sorry to bring up an old thread.
Im able to flash and reflash any bios, and i dont have a problem with it (thanks to all involved!)
Based on what i read around, im using 3.05 which seems to be more stable.
But since everyone says to update EC bios as well, im stuck with "TARGET BOARD IS DIFFERENT!" whenever i try to flash the .422 version by using ECALL.BAT.
My laptop is a medion erazer X6813, which should be 100% an MSI 16F2 (im using an unlocked bios after all, even under bios says it is) so i still dont understand why the hell im not able to flash the EC.
Im stuck with a very old EC, namely the 4.05, and i think it somewhat gives me problems.
I already dumped my own EC btw, before attempting to flash.
Any thoughts? I see that ENEF support /E switch to force flash. Is EC important at the point to not make laptop bootable, if something goes wrong?
Heres the ec version details:
EC-Version: 16F2EM71 Ver4.05
The EC im trying to flash is the same one included in 3.05/3.0P and 3.0R which is:
EC-Version: 16F2EG61 Ver4.22
What gives? Could somebody help me out? ThanksHyperX likes this. -
Kingpinzero ROUND ONE,FIGHT! You Win!
Well I'm going to reply to myself.
By forcing flashing with /e /b4c switches I was able to upgrade EC as well.
No problems so far from what it saw, probably EC doesn't do anything big in the end at all.HyperX likes this. -
hacktrix2006 Hold My Vodka, I going to kill my GPU
Sorry for late replies got issues at home, Handry if you PM i might be able to help ya sort it all out as i am running the latest firmware and ec now which is .423 and 3.0R which according to MSI is the last bios update the MS-16F2 is getting.
Kingpinzero you should be careful when forcing flashes more so with EC you force flash that and it goes down south your naffed.
Your lucky this time though.HyperX likes this. -
Kingpinzero ROUND ONE,FIGHT! You Win!
I didnt had replies so i had to take the risk, since my previous 4.05 was corrupted.
Where we can get the 4.23? Why MSI said to not flash the last EC, they said theres a risky to brick it?HyperX likes this. -
hacktrix2006 Hold My Vodka, I going to kill my GPU
King, the EC firmware is for MSI MS-16F2 only. I have the .423 some where on my hard disk/ e-mail system so i dig it out for everyone.
I will also re-upload the MSI Bios as well that is unlocked once i have found the bios files.
with EC Firmware it is normally Brand specific i.e MSI to MSI MS-16F2 Medion to there laptop's etc. Sometimes flashing the wrong one can brick your laptop to the stage where i will not boot at all and it then can't be recovered like a standard bios update.
This is why on the MSI GT683DXR website it has do not flash these firmware(s) on to Whitebooks (which is what the MS-16F2 is).
As i stated sorry for late reply i have been busy with issues at home with a terminally ill family member.HyperX likes this. -
Kingpinzero ROUND ONE,FIGHT! You Win!
Mine is a medion x6813, but in bios it reads as 16F2.
Do you think that flashing the 4.23 gives me problems? The stock EC was 4.05, but it fails hash checksum, its corrupted.
The one i flashed anyway, 4.22, it says checksum ok, and it works. Thats why im asking
Thank youHyperX likes this. -
hacktrix2006 Hold My Vodka, I going to kill my GPU
If you managed to flash 4.22 i would stick with 4.22 as 4.23 that i am running has no difference at all in cooling or performance.
Infact its worse as it stops UEFI booting correctly when using shellX64.efi on a FAT32 pendrive via bios.HyperX likes this. -
hello
!!
I have a Medion x6813 (MD97831) like you Kingpinzero but with the "R" release of the unlocked bios: 1 usb port do not work and the subwoofer too, do you have the same problems?
Have you see any good change with the Ec flash? I have not do it at this time ^^ !!
Ps: Sorry for my english !!HyperX likes this. -
Kingpinzero ROUND ONE,FIGHT! You Win!
Yo
Oh well my USB are working but I'm not sure about sub woofer
Also I'm running 30r unlocked and 4.22 flashed EC.
It messes up the light button, because now it enables and disables the webcam, but if you keep it on and reboot it works fine.
Also this EC makes me able to set fans and thermal limits in bios whereas I wasn't able before.HyperX likes this. -
After reading the entire thread and seeing that EC 4.23 for gt683dx was faulty and not to flashed, is there any info about the latest EC 4.24? Should I flash it or not? (using an msi gt683dx with bios 1.0z, that's how I bought it)

I have been having a problem with my 16f2. About a week ago my laptop shut off for no reason. It would not turn back on unless I removed the battery and pressed the power button several times to drain the reserve power from the computer. This happened several times in a row. It hasn't happened since but it has me worried because I did not purchase a warranty with the computer. Does anyone have any idea why this might have been caused? It is the first time that it has happened since I owned the computer and had me pretty scared. The entire computer and the heatsink was cleaned about a month ago and the computer or the power supply were not hot. At the time I was running on battery power but had more than 50 percent remaining. I know that it wasn't a problem with the battery because since this problem it has worked fine and I am still getting 2:30 hr of battery time. Any ideas anyone? It wasn't acpi shutdown it just shut down and I had to run chkdsk /x to correct disk problems. Like I said, the first and only time this has happened. I was not gaming at the time.

Hi, is there any BIOS work for MS-16F3.
-
hacktrix2006 Hold My Vodka, I going to kill my GPU
pabloa2 what bios you running mate also what was you doing before this happened.
I have the laptop myself and do not have this problem. You say you have cleaned the HSF and CPU/GPU which compound are you using now MX4 seems to be the best.
Its sounding like your hitting a high temp to trigger it. Either that or you have a faulty laptop. Personally i would contact your reseller. -
Hi. Im searching but yet couldnt find any unlocked bios for msi 16f3. Anybody post link if it ever exist.

I was using the modded one... 30p I think. I went back to the stock 16f2 bios and haven't had any problems.

Hello all... Got bored and decided to make some modified bioses for the MSI GTX580M. Inluded in the attachment are 18 bioses with various clock and shader speeds. All the modified bioses have the same clock speeds for P3 and P2. The voltage has not been altered (.80v 2d, .87v 3d). I would not recommend upping your voltage as there has been many reports of people frying their cards by doing this. Read the readme for instructions. Enjoy.
NOTE: Make sure to visit this page before you modify your clock speeds → http://forum.notebookreview.com/msi/645070-force-fans-go-faster.html

You don´t need a Biosupdate to upgrade your CPU from i5 to i7.
But here is the unlocked original bios for the Medion Erazer Serie with MS-16F2 Barebone: https://mega.co.nz/#!goV0nJQJ!Bod8hniuuNlMUZlTcPB_NjZVtSUcourgUNZA-23tX9Y
