I'm sure millions of people have been wondering, "What kind of backpack works with this computer?"
This system fits very nicely into an Everki Glide backpack:
The specs on the backpack say it's for "up to 17.3 inch" laptops. The EVOC-16L-G-1080 is 15.6 inch, but as you can see from the photo, the bag is not overkill, especially when you allow for the 330W PSU with this computer.
My Glide bag holds the EVOC computer, 330W PSU and cord, a 1080p USB-powered portable LCD monitor, my USB HDD for backups, mouse, gamepad, and miscellaneous thumb drives and cables. There's an outside pocket that works well for reading glasses and headphones. This bag is not expensive compared to the other Everki bags, but it seems very durably built. I'm happy with it so far, and it's certainly a good fit for this computer in my typical travel load-out.Aroc and leftsenseless like this. -
Though I do think the general opinion is that LGA crushes BGA every day of the week. It comes at a price of form-factor/portability. But the creds go out to enthusiasts for being able to still recommend BGA setups to new guys. Kinda like an audiophile recommending a pair of Beats headphones cause he knows the person buying them will enjoy them.
About the temps I will monitor them closely. I never did that before. But I have learned alot on this forum and one of those things are temp-monitoring.
Which brings me to a quote from Donald :
"We undervolt our EVOC 16S-1060 (MSI GS63VR) without losing any performance.
Our CPU temps under heavy stress may creep into the low 80’s, but you should never see high 80’s or 90C at all. "
I especially like the part of heavy stress into low 80's. Make me believe FPS limiting overwatch might be doable sub-70.
My only fear atm is that MSI ships a completely new cooling solution in 3 weeks with a 1060ti completely trashing my setup.

As an audiophile... No... Just no....
1080 Ti you mean? No way that's coming to a 15" machine or laptops at all. -
Not even 17+
-
No I meant the 1060ti. Have heard that MSI was shipping their GS63/73Vr with 1070's. Then that they were holding it off.
At the same time Aorus delays their X7/X5 v7 models further.
my own personal deduction says that Nvidia are releasing a new middlecard between 1060 and 1070. So either 1065 or 1060ti.
But that is just purely my own speculation. -
Hm... Haven't heard any rumors about that so I doubt it. Plus desktop would get it first. There also isn't that large of a price difference or performance difference between 1060 and 1070. I would be surprised if they made a middleground. Though I can't disprove you completely.

This is the one I got:
It is very durable, the handles are sturdy despite the heavy weight of the laptop with the charger, it doesn't feel like the handles are going to break if you hold it from only one of them. I have walked in light rain as well while having the backpack on and the laptop wasn't wet so that's another plus point.
Speaking of storage, you can store your entire room in there (not literally) but you have so many pockets / sections it's super roomy and convenient.
PS: It costs an arm and a leg but hey, it's the best out there and this beast deserves nothing but the best.Aroc, bloodhawk, syscrusher and 1 other person like this. -

I seriously considered that model, but I am a backpackrat, which is to say the amount of s***, errr, stuff, that I carry will expand to fill the available space. ALL of the space. If I had a bag that large, not only would it not fit under an airline seat, but I would need to charter a separate cargo plane just to carry my laptop bag. I think the Antonov AN-225 would suffice.

Current settings:
- 1 core 4.8 GHz
- 2 core 4.7 GHz
- 3 core 4.7 GHz
- 4 core 4.6 GHz
- Voltage offset -75 mV
I've observed that the temp difference between 2 and 3 active cores was very small, so I am experimenting with no difference in clock between those two levels. My system spends a lot of time at 3 and 4 cores active, so getting an extra 100 MHz at 3 cores is nice for things like today's crypto batch runs.
I'm slowly creeping my voltage back down. It was unstable at -85 mV with clock on 1 core set to 5.0 GHz, but I may have been a little too cautious in backing off all the way to -60 mV.
I'm pretty happy with my clocks where they are, but I would like to undervolt to -80 mV if I can, to keep temperatures just a little lower. Time will tell.leftsenseless, Spartan@HIDevolution, Papusan and 1 other person like this. -

A bit offtopic but this came out on the german notebookcheck today
http://www.notebookcheck.com/Laptop...GeForce-und-Radeon-Grafikkarten.207784.0.html
"Nach unseren Quellen plant Nvidia als Nächstes Stromsparversionen der GTX 1060, GTX 1070 und GTX 1080 für Laptops. Diese " Max-Q" genannten GPUs werden weniger Strom brauchen, aber auch etwas weniger Leistung aufweisen als die derzeit verfügbaren Modelle. Gedacht sind die Modelle für dünne und flache Notebooks; wir hoffen, dass sie nicht mit demselben Namen wie bisher verkauft werden"
Basically says that according to their sources Nvidia plans to roll out powersaving versions of 1060, 1070, 1080 for laptops. They will use reduced power but also give reduced performance.
Basically it looks like the "middle ground" but if it holds what i believe is the purpose of it (thermals, noise) etc. We might see 1070m in MSIs next gen of GS series.
Unless my german is completely off the charts that is.
Disclaimer: this was published the day after my own speculations. Illuminati? -

It truly is! No doubts about that. Moreover I am really impressed with the laptop. I found the build quality really good (as i was scared since i saw iunlock videos). The overall finish is premium and not at all plasticky and cheap. To be honest i did try out new AW17R4 at Virgin Megastore nearby and found that alienware does not feel that premium the way its described. Noticed that you can easily flex the alienware screen too if you can flex msi screen.

What I want to know is how does everyone like the fact that Notebookreview mods merged all of your threads into this new thread.
I am finding it difficult to see any continuity between the discussions of different models, coming in from all of the independent threads, that have been merged here.

I think it is very difficult to track an individual's purchase experience and after purchase results, impressions, benchmarks, etc.
IMO, the best thing to do is to make a separate Resellers Sub-forum like it is the case in the Clevo forum, everything is neat there and easy to tracksyscrusher and 213NSX like this. -
Well I can understand the need to clean up. But its not like the MSI forum section is beeing spammed or anything?
Besides merging the purchase of one system from one supplier into one thread I can live with. But imo it requires some moderation from for example @Phoenix who has the first post. Which I believe is unfair to him. In that case the moderators need to create an entire subforum that they moderate.
BUT for the love of barebones. Why merge completely different systems? My thread was not about praise to HIDEvolution or anything. It was factual information about price/configuration of a completely different system. A system that is already NOT represented on the forum.
In other words. A retailer thread is ok. If its about the retailer. But if its about the systems ordered from said retailer they should be in the "I ordered a GT73"-thread.hmscott and Spartan@HIDevolution like this. -

I'm not happy about it, tbh. I had tried pretty hard to focus my order thread on things unique to my requirements, as an aid to others who do the same kind of work as me who might be considering this machine. {sigh}
When I first discovered the change, it was by seeing "likes" on one of my posts but not to the thread I intended. I was about to post an apology for accidentally posting to the wrong thread, then found that the right thread was gone. Going forward, threads about order experiences from a vendor will be merged into a single thread in the MSI forum (one per vendor). This may initially cause some confusion with the chronological merge order of posts, but the information is all there, and existing links to posts in any of those threads will continue to work fine.
We aren't going to add a vendor feedback subforum until the MSI forum gets busier (less than 24 hours before a thread gets pushed off the main page, consistently). When that eventually happens, we'll add the subforum. For now, this is how it's going to work.

Charles, can you make each of the vendor threads stickies then?
Also, when the thread is about a particular model, as opposed to a 'reseller feedback' style thread, can you leave it to stand alone? The threads by @Phoenix @syscrusher @RalfTech and @Maverick389 are good examples of threads about the model, with their special uses, not so much about their experience with HIDevolution as a vendor.
.Maverick389, 213NSX, syscrusher and 2 others like this. -
Threads about specific models should go to the owners thread. No need to create multiple threads about the same models. While there are variations for each model, most share a common model/motherboard. If said model does not have an owners thread, it can be created.
-
Woho i shall get to create an owners lounge!

This seemed to be pretty stable last night. I was up really late working in Unity, and I tried pushing the undervolt to -80 mV to see if I could shave the temperature a little. That ran okay during my work, but when I tried to suspend the machine later it watchdog-reset. So I'm back to -75 mV today, and I think that's going to be the setpoint on this specific machine.
The three-core clock is still up for debate between 4.7 and 4.6 GHz. During one period of really heavy work yesterday, I did manage to get the CPU to hit 91C and thermal throttle. It was just for a few seconds, and the fans were in automatic mode. Rather than backing off clock to prevent that, since I'm the only one using the machine I'm really more inclined to leave the clock where it is and be vigilant about my fans. The nice thing about my workload is that this is not a server, so I can predict when I'm going to push the machine hard for an extended duration. One button press on the keyboard to rev up the fans is not a large burden.leftsenseless likes this. -

Well, I found a great CPU test for my machine! I've got a project build running in Unity of my largest project to date. It's had all four cores, and both threads on each core, pinned at nearly 100%, for over an hour.
Obviously, I've switched on the max fan mode. Right now, it's sitting at 4.5 GHz on 4 cores, 8 threads, and is maintaining about 88 C package temp, 86 C core temp. Voltage is at -75 mV.
Consider the value of your time. I am a CompE with 30+ years of experience, but I bought from HIDevolution because they already have the tuning and overclocking experience in house. I needed a "gaming" machine in specs, but for use as an engineering mobile workstation. I didn't have time nor inclination to delid and repaste my own CPU and GPU. (No disrespect to the awesome folks here who do those things -- different situation from mine.)
Build your own boxes, you're spending expensive engineering resources to configure, test, and support them. Unless you pay your engineers minimum wage, you may be better off to go with HIDevolution or one of the other companies that have the labs and people already set up to build laptops efficiently.Last edited by a moderator: Mar 25, 2017 -

The temps I cited earlier, upper 80s Celsius, were just a couple of minutes after I backed my clock down from 4.6 GHz. Now that it's been at 4.5 GHz for a longer time, my temps have settled down in the range of 83 to 85 C. Nice.
And yes, I'm quite happy with the performance of this system. I have an architectural walkthrough project that ran at 15~55 FPS on my Retina Macbook Pro. The same project runs at about 80 to 200 FPS on my EVOC, at 4K resolution. (The panel can only do about 60 FPS, but my software is not set to limit at panel speed, for testing.) -
I now officially have the latest Windows 10 Redstone 2 on my MSI GT73VR-425 7RF

Unity game engine for the rendering part, with a combination of Blender, 3DS, Substance Designer, and other tools upstream. I also use some modeling tools that run inside Unity, for prototyping and for geometry like sidewalks that does not require fine detail. The in-engine tooling is also great for adding low-poly collision meshes around visible high-poly geometry.Donald@Paladin44 and 213NSX like this. -
