Same great score with lower temps possibly, which processor? Thanks for posting.
What are the clocks on the cpu and how many bins are unlocked?
Do you have a comparable haswell cpu in the shop to show the difference from the same room possibly run at the same time?
Again, very much appreciate you sharing.
-
I believe that is the i7 5700HQ and not the higher variant right?
-
Sorry forgot to mention it was tested with i7-5700HQ. I only had little time to test it today but will do more testing tomorrow.
-
I suppose this is good news for me right
-
Thanks a lot for your effort
The temps seem really good. Still check out this thread frequently and once we have a lot of reviews choose the CPU that you feel suits your need best.

What about the new gaming dock, that looks much more better than the one launched during CES earlier this year. Any news on that one?

-
These new G-Sync models are awesome , when can we expect them to order?
-
Agreed. Retailers like GentechPC and Newegg already have them for sale. From what I gather, this Monday or Tuesday is when a lot of the others join in.

Where are you seeing mention of this? Anyway I like the old one, plenty of space to do your own thing inside of it. -
So the current GT72 might only need a BIOS update, to support G-Sync? Its screen has the same exact hardware ID....

This may be entirely dependent on whether msi and nvidia feel like existing gt72 owners should have this feature. Remember, gsync requires a signature from nvidia to allow to work, much like every other nvidia feature so the decision may very likely depend on nvidia. -
I highly doubt MSI will provide this Gsync feature to existing/older GT72 and GT80 model laptops. My guess is that MSI has to license this feature from Nvidia and they're certainly not going to dip into their own pockets to add features to already sold inventory.
GSync feature is huge for the newer models and helps make it their new Flagship laptops versus the old Haswell ones.
My reasoning lies with the fact that MSI could have easily provided the SteelSeries program to older GT60/70 laptops with the keyboards but didn't. Only after a BIOS flash and GPU upgrade did the program begin to work yet people said they were different keyboards. -
I concur and have read the same.
-
I wonder though if a bios update would allow this to work? They are the same laptop minus the newer CPU?
I wonder if the bios can be modified or updated in some way to allow for Gsync to work. If all that changed is the CPU, I would be highly annoyed of MSI didn't allow those very expensive laptops to take advantage of Gsync, nightingale likes this. -
I honestly feel that's the correct track to be on but the license keeps coming into discussion so it makes me wonder how the validation happens or if it even plays into the license. I feel there is something going on which we will find out about through reverse engineering.
-
I believe being equipped with eDP panels means that all the necessary hardware is technically there for Haswell GT72s (minus licensing) with respect to G-Sync. That being said, not all last-gen GT72s shipped with the same panel. The quote here that the panels are the same is only for those GT72s with an IPS panel, which was only officially available on more expensive GT72 configurations (e.g. 445).
There's also USB 3.1 with these Broadwell GT72s, which isn't insignificant, so there's likely more going on internally. -

I believe all the gt72's that shipped with the 4980hq originally, shipped with IPS panels, and then much later on the gt72's that shipped with the 4720hq got the IPS treatment as well.
From my knowledge all gt72 owners with a 4710hq cpu will have the tn panel and will be unable for the foreseeable future get g-sync on their laptops.
^makes me a very sad
having bought the 4710hq and 980m as the 4980hq in new zealand was absurdly expensive.
-
You can always retrofit the right panel. Shouldn't be too difficult.
-
nightingale Notebook Evangelist
Hmm this is true, i wonder how much the cost would be to change a panel from msi themself when the tn panel breaks or something. Maybe you could even upgrade the motherboard itself to something better when it breaks from msi unless the cost is absurd which it probably shouldnt be.
On a further thought, i wonder how much it would be to basically turn a gt72 2qd (4710hq and 970m) into a top end 4980/top end broadwell and ips panel. -
WhatsThePoint Notebook Virtuoso
The upgrading cost to the owner of the GT72 2QD would probably be greater in time and money than the cost of buying a new GT72 with the desired specs and selling the GT72 QD2

Skylake is not so far away and MSI will probably release new notebooks right at the start (like they always did at new CPU releases as far as I remember).Last edited: Jun 8, 2015 -

Nice scores and temps) Does those G-Sync panels run at 75hz like in Sager?
-
The panel is running at 60Hz.
-
if it's indeed 60Hz, i dont see why even TN panels cant work with G-SYNC. Early adopters here are mostly having 4710HQ with TN 60Hz panelnightingale likes this.

So has anyone taken delivery on a new GT80 SLI-263 yet?
-
hmmm.... I wonder why such a large difference in processor power consumption between 980m and 970m. Nice scores Kevin!
-
Awesome! Is the 980 here the 1438 or 1423 configuration? Thanks.
-
That is a bummer about only being 60hz, and not 75hz, but not a deal breaker I guess.
I see MSI is marketing away with what it calls "True Color Technology" which it never did on previous wide-viewing angle displays. Is this something new in terms of technology on the panel itself (seems unlikely as they appear the same) or are they just sort of adding a gimmick here allowing multiple profile presets (gaming, movie, sRGB, etc)?Last edited: Jun 9, 2015 -

It appears to just be a driver download from their webpage, my tn panel equipped gt72 2qe could get the update and i must say it does make a difference to the screen, although if accurate or not i cannot say as i dont have a calibration tool to test. -
Could the 60hz limitation be due to Optimus?
-
GT72 has no optimus tech. it's manual GPU switching requiring a restart
-
You are right. For some reason I thought this was regarding the GS series, but indeed the GT72 has a manual GPU switch like my GT80.

That's a very good CPU score. Broadwell definitely enhances the CPU performance
I bet it is most likely that it runs to the same TDP ceiling, but at higher clocks. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Higher performance per clock at around the same clocks rather than higher clocks for the TDP really.

I just received my GS60 Ghost 607 yesterday, which has a 965m and an i7 5700HQ. I know most here will probably opt for the 970m model. So far I've done basic setups and checked out the Nahamic enhancement software, which does make a very noticeable difference through the speakers (I haven't tried earbuds/headphones yet). Sounds are louder, fuller, and less tinny. It's not spectacular sound, but this is quite good for laptop speakers.
On a side note, I had to use an extension on Chrome to force YouTube to use the flash player instead of html5. YouTube would buffer, rarely play videos, and crash Chrome (happened the very first time I loaded YouTube) until I used the extension.
CCleaner found a TON of temp files and registry fixes on its first run.
And I used Windows to TRIM the SSD.
So far, I'm really enjoying the laptop. What an elegant design and gorgeous screen! Even though I'll be doing a lot of audio recording and editing on it, I'll have to try a couple games.z0mgn0es likes this. -

Congrats on the new laptop
If and when you try to game can you comment on the fan noise and CPU/GPU temps?
Been looking at the GS60 for a while but the fan profile/ always on fan really was not for me.
Hopefully they reworked the fan profiles so they are not as loud under load as the older models.GenTechPC likes this. -
I just bought the same notebook. I would've opted for the 970M version as well, but the price difference here in Canada is super hard for me to swallow. How're you finding the temperatures by chance? What games have you tried so far?
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
The 965M is not bad at all either to be fair, still a massive step up over the 960M.
-
I don't doubt that at all!! Once I get my notebook, I'll report back with a mini-review.

Thanks! This thing is blazing fast, especially compared to my old desktop. So far, I haven't done anything super intensive on it, but the fans have only ramped up a couple times. The noise was rather low. Once I play a game, that will really test that out. During normal use like posting on this forum, I don't hear any noise coming from the laptop at all.
I bought this version because I do most of my gaming on a PS4, but would still like to play the occasional PC game. The third part of Starcraft 2 has to come out sometime. Plus, paying $1499 was a lot easier to do than $1699 in the US. While watching videos or web surfing, the temperatures stay low enough that I can keep the laptop on my lap without an issue. I haven't tried any games yet. I don't really have any newer PC games at the moment. Is there a free/freemium game I could test out? Otherwise, I have a few games on Steam like Team Fortress 2. What should I try?
I'm glad to hear that! Hopefully, I can find a game to try on it this weekend. -
So does anyone know where I can buy the 5th Gen GS60 shown on the website?
They have them in Red Or Gold. http://www.msi.com/product/notebook/GS60-2QE-Ghost-Pro.html#hero-overview -
for those concerned about noise, MSI released a fan control app that can help reduce the fan noise of your system. it's callled silent option and can be downloaded here
