Yes, the 040US is the better machine.

Basically the difference between them is the CPU (single core vs dual core) and hard drive size (250GB vs 320GB).

IMHO for $50 price difference, there is no doubt the 040US is the way to go.

I'm planning to buy a laptop with an HDMI port and just saw the model MSI U230-040US. They have this model on stock for 489 C$ (NCIX), is this a good deal? I'm planning to use it for some light Autocad work, office documents and web surfing. Is is easy to upgrade the ram (DIY)? Can anyone recommend a good brand as an upgrade RAM?

That seems to be the going price but IMO its still a little overpriced right now. I think $500 is a bit steep for a 12 inch.

This is Canada we're talking about. At $489 it's a good deal, and the best price available that i know of.

$CAD and $USD are approx same right now, and U230-040US is $489 US. I haven't found it much cheaper from any reputable sources either. I'd say it's a decent deal.

Owners or previous owners of the U230, have you noticed the webcam pointing lower than it should? According to this fairly detailed review, his review model's webcam was pointing way too low. Perhaps it was a fluke on his model?

    Thanks

Hello everyone. I have been reading up on this laptop and like what I hear. I just wanted to ask about the hdmi output on this. I use my current laptop hooked up to my 32in sharp tv right now doing 1080p. I look on MSI website and its says 1080i compliance. I just wanted to make this this will do full 1080p.

    thanks in advance.

Has anyone checked to see if the 3G SIM slot under battery is functional in the 040us . It has the buttons and the software comes standard installed.

Just got off the phone with MSI - they have no plans to release the Wind12 with X2 L335 processor in the UK. Looking around the net, it seems like UK is the only country where theyve decided to do this. He couldnt tell me why.

Got my U230 a few days ago but haven't had a chance to mess with it much. Been very busy and out of town. However I did turn it on quickly to set it up. I was sad to discover there are 2 pixels mis-firing on the display. NewEgg has a min of 8 bad pixels and when I contacted MSI, they have a min of 5 bad pixels before they will replace it. Really?! in 2010 we are still fighting with bad pixels? Amazing. Not happy about that at all. I hope I can figure out a way to get it to work right. Even if I wanted to sell it now, who would want it with bad pixels? I know I wouldn't.

It's also got the K325 Neo Athlon II which is the die shrink to 45nm.

    http://www.fudzilla.com/content/view/16103/35/

The specs also lists 512Mb of non-shared Video Memory, hinting at it having a discrete GPU....which granted I think is probably an error but at the very least the new Neos are reported to have a DX10.1 capable IGP, and that means it's at least got an HD4200.

Given how stupidly long MSI takes after announcing a notebook to actually start shipping products to retailers I'd guess you might be able to buy a U250 around August or September.

I would really like to hear more opinions on this netbook (if you can call it that!)

Right now I have an ASUS 1000HE, and it's been great. However, it lacks a lot in the CPU and especially the GPU areas. This and the ASUS 1201n seem to be pretty good candidates to replace my current netbook.

I'll wait a couple of weeks then bite on one or the other. Let's hear those opinions.

This info came from this site. Before I go ahead and try it, would like to make sure it will even work.

Finally got my U230  arrived Tuesday morning. I'd be happy to answer any specific questions from anyone about it, as I know I was searching all over myself before I got mine. Initial impressions are very high, and I'm about to clean install windows 7 ultimate (32bit), althugh it didnt come with as much bloatware as I'd expected, I still like a fresh install personally. So i'll be able to give a better overall review (maybe of some gaming) once ive done that.

Im trying to think of any bad points (because I know thats what you all want to hear :p ), theres 2 that kind of stand out, the screen doesnt tilt back very far (roughly 100 degrees max), its far enough though for 95% of the normal use, and the webcam does point kind of low, not ridiculously low, but if you too close it will miss your top of head.

Good points that stood out were lack of flex on the keyboard, which I always personally take as a good barometer of general laptop build quality (only sign of flex is on the "G" key, but only if you really press it hard), the amazing HD screen, the tight build quality (like how sturdily the USB's plug in, very snug), the seemingly complete lack of heat from the bottom, the screen doesnt seem to lose anything from even extreme side angles, the speed, the impressive stats, I like how the battery makes a nice typing angle, I havent heard the fan spin up in about an hour, touchpad has a nice finish to it (NOT a sticky glossy touchpad!)

    The U230 also has a 12inch screen...

mine just arrived yesterday..liking it so far..almost complete...except for 3G Connectivity...it does have Bluetooth which is really amazing given the already current spec sheet...(MSI website said its optional)...and yeah...the screen doesnt tilt that far...i missed my HP DV2740SE's screen coz of that..lolz..

one prominent issue i have though is the hard drive on this thing...apparently mine shipped with a western digital drive..and its kinda noisy...i can hear disk activity most of the time...could it be an issue? i dont sense any slowdown though...and ive checked with CrystalDiskInfo if there were any SMART failure on the drive...but the app gave it a Good rating...

    so there....

Am looking at the U230 or Toshiba 115 or Acer 1410 for mostly web, MS Office, and light gaming, but also for video playback, including via the HDMI.

Any recommendations? Also, it appears only the Toshiba has the eSata port. Is that a big plus?

Thanks for the info. May need to look into a higher cap battery.

Just noticed MSi posted a new BIOS on their site. However, the description is very vague as to what it "fixes". "Disable WLAN ASPM L0s/L1" doesn't tell me much.

Any thoughts as to what that's about?

    Thanks

Has anyone successfully re-used their MSi OEM Win7 (Home) key for an x64 install of Win7 (Home). When I try to activate it, it says it's invalid and gives me a automated phone system option to activate.

Right now I've pulled the original HDD and slapped in a 20gb just to test x64. Make sure I can find all the x64 drivers and see how my software would work. All seems fine. So if I were to do the activation over the phone now with this 20gb drive, would I be able to install x64 on the original drive and re-active it again?

    Thanks a ton!

ok I have 2 questions, read through the whole of this thread, and no1 has answered how to overclock the MV-40. I really want to, unless anyone knows another solution to my 2nd problem. When i watch videos on megavideo, there good and run perfect, but when I full screen them, they stutter abit, and arnt really watchable. This is really annoying, does anyone have a solution???

    Thanks.

ps. if anyone wants another confirmation: The argos verison, has bluetooth, is single core, and has the 3200 even though its listed as the X1xxx (cnt remember exact model)

ASPM stand for Active State Power Management. From reading the wiki, it sounds like this power management can be done either by the OS or the BIOS. Updating the BIOS so that this is disabled I'm assuming gives the honor to the OS?

Not real sure if this is a worthwhile "upgrade" or not.

My search is most likely down to the U230 or Toshiba 115 (though I do like the keyboard better on a Lenovo), so can anyone comment on reliability and build quality of this v. the Toshiba, which certainly has been around a while and has a good reputation?

What about keyboard and keypad feel of this v Toshiba?

    Customer support?

Haven't figured out a way to OC the CPU yet, but got the GPU humming along @ 650Mhz (150 over stock). Underclocking and undervolting are both fairly straight forward using AMD OverDrive. Nice little system compared to my 1201N, but wishing for ION in my u230 also.

Using AMD GPU Overclock tool, don't adjust the memory speed. When you apply the clock speed you want, it won't reflect in the core speed window. Use AMD Overdrive to verify. Just check GPU status window, it will show a current setting. Don't do this in any power saving modes, and keep an eye on your chipset temps. I would recommend keeping max temp 70*C or below for a 780G.
