The MSI Italy price list linked earlier describes the 7RG as:
1. N1
7 Graphic:
GTX 1070 * 1
2. Ne
w slim design
17.7mm
3. VR Ready
4. 4K UHD Panel
5. Intel 7th CPU 7700HQ
Emphasis mine. That's the same thickness as their current GTX 1060 body.
Very excited for this one because of it's relatively portable nature for a GTX 1070 15 incher but we'll have to wait and see how it cools.
Price is also quite high in Euros? -
ThePerfectStorm Notebook Deity
Considering the fact that it has a 1070 and a 4K panel, I would expect the price to be high.
Sent from my SM-G935F using TapatalkCedricFP likes this. -
I'm not going to believe these are really coming with 1070s, until someone has one of them in hand.
-
Is there any reason to think that so many spec sheets / price sheets / pre-orders / official product pages that were once up and since removed / Donald from HIDEvolution confirming their existence will be all incorrect?
I mean it wouldn't hugely bother me if the laptop didn't exist, but aren't we too far down the line to doubt they ever come to market?
(I'm genuinely asking, not rhetorically or sarcastically asking.) -
ThePerfectStorm Notebook Deity
Yes, we are too far down the line, and yes, they will come to market.

Looks like I will sell mine in my country and get the new one in US in a travel... Basically because of the panel (I have the crappy one from bestbuy), the Nvme ssd, speakers and of course a powerful 1070.... So I am eager to start seeing the first reviews

I think it will be so.
I really think they have only delayed their launch a little -
ThePerfectStorm Notebook Deity
Unfortunately, I don't think that the GS63VR/GS73VR will get G-Sync panels. 1080p maybe, but G-Sync is unlikely.

A little different but apparently there exists at least a GE62 with 1080p panel and 1070:

Yes, there is, actually it's already in stores (at least in my country). I'm considering it as well, but I really don't like looks of the new GE62vr... I hate those "Look, I've a freaking gaming notebook!!" vents ( https://www.czc.cz/msi-ge62mvr-7rg-008cz-apache-pro-cerna/204344/produkt ), also that chaotic placement of ports on the left side (USB, HDMI, DP, oh yea - another USB...).

Looks expensive. I think US pricing may be closer to US$ 2,399.99 - US$2,499.99 since 2,700 is GT73VR 1080 range, and I don't think it will be that expensive.
I might well be wrong, though.

Yes, I agree with @ThePerfectStorm , it shouldn't be that expensive (at least I hope they don't go crazy with the prices).CedricFP and ThePerfectStorm like this.

Yeah, I hope so too. If it is above 2.4k-2.5k, I will have a hard time justifying buying it. And even if it is 2.4k, I'm still waiting on thermals.
Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalk -
Exactly... If it is that expensive (2,7-2,8k), I might reconsider the GE62vr with the 1070, even if it breaks my heart.
Thermal management will be the most interesting thing, looking forward to that.

Pricing on unannounced products is more ouija board material than opinion
It sounds way too expensive. I'd guess someone is taking pre-orders... on unannounced product, so why not ask for whatever the market will bear?

Thanks for the opinion. I agree, since for 2.75k-2.85k you can get a GT73VR (1080) and have a bit of spare cash for SSDs/RAM.

Another listing I found. Both were 512GB+2TB for EUR 2599, I have a hope that the base variants (256GB+2TB) will cost less. Maybe something like 2.4k USD? But as @hmscott said, trying to predict prices before release is not the most sensible but anyway
. But anyway, the more important thing is thermals. I really hope they nail them, since this laptop has such potential as a portable work+play laptop (with the exception of battery life).

Great, I really, really hope that the 1080p version reaches the US. At 2.3k it would be really good (thermals permitting). However @Donald@HIDevolution said that only the 4K version would get the 1070. But your link appears to disprove this. I'm a bit confused. Can anyone clarify? @hmscott could you please tag the resellers?
Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalk -
I am very much hoping the same, 1080p just makes things much easier for me as I still use a lot of old-ish applications for work that are not scaling enabled, and yet that W10 cannot properly scale. I have a 4k monitor at home and it is an absolute pain having to switch to 1080p to use these applications.
I would also like to know if HIDEvolution will be offering an EVOC branded 1070 GS63VR because if so that will almost certainly be my buy.hmscott, tobi777 and ThePerfectStorm like this. -
ThePerfectStorm Notebook Deity
And also 1080p gives better battery life, although the GS63VR is never going to be an endurance champion anyway

A EVOC GS63VR w/ 1070 and 1080p screen will be my buy, I need something that is less gaudy than the MSI dragon logo.hmscott, CedricFP and ThePerfectStorm like this.
-
ThePerfectStorm Notebook Deity
For me, I can handle the Dragon Logo, but 1080p is what I'll be scouring the resellers for. If I can't find a 1080p version, then if the thermals are good, I'll probably end up buying a 4K one.

Hm, it seems like thickness and cooling system stays the same as the 1060 model (GS73vr), maybe they're using better cooling paste or they make the fans spin faster.

Of course there are no reviews yet for the GS73/GS63 1070 model, but I was watching a review for the GS63 7RF 1060, and it's details area had a link for the 1070 model coming in for review, but it looks like MSI pulled it from their site:
1070 GTX version that's coming: https://www.msi.com/Laptop/GS63VR-7RG-Stealth-Pro.html#hero-overview
This reviewers unit had freezing issues, so it was returned...

Update: Returned, due to freezing issues, see the pinned comment! Unboxing & first look at the new 2017 MSI Stealth Pro GS63VR 7RF, the revised Kaby Lake 7th Gen CPU Intel Core i7 7700HQ with Nvidia 1060 GTX GPU. There is also a 1070 GTX version coming soon (I'd be worried about fan noise and temps on that one!)

MSI should really look into those micro stutters, it's annoying to buy a premium machine and then suffer from constant freezing (even if it's partly solvable through forcing the dGPU)...hmscott and ThePerfectStorm like this.

Or maybe it will be what hoped it wouldn't be but feared it would be - an overheating mess.
I hope they tune the fans to keep temperatures under control. Please MSI, don't cock this up.

TBH, they should just dump Optimus and go with Clevo's solution of a toggle between dGPU + G-Sync or iGPU only. The GS63VR has terrible battery life anyway, and it's not like losing Optimus would have a huge effect.
Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalk -
It's not just Clevo, MSI also has a dGPU/iGPU MUX with a GPU button to select the other GPU and a reboot switches you over.
The GT73VR has the MUX dGPU/iGPU switch, not sure if the GT83VR has it - the GT80's all did.CedricFP, tobi777 and ThePerfectStorm like this. -

I don't think there is a single prospective customer who is not worried about fan noise and temps, especially with the temperatures the 1060 variants of the GS63VR and GS73VR.

That makes it almost unforgivable to troll users of a 1.8k+ laptop with microstutters.
Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalkhmscott likes this. -
Yeah, it's a big jump up in thermal output between the 1060 and 1070 - 30w-50w, so these 1070 thin laptops are gonna be flame throwers
The noise will mostly be a factor if you run them unlimited FPS - without V-sync or RTSS Frame limiter of some kind.
The owner will be the main control of the result. He/She will need to undervolt, set up each app so it gets the best performance - but doesn't run FPS faster than the refresh rate - so as to waste thermal output.
A nice laptop cooler will likely help, at least lifting up the rear for convection cooling effect, and making sure the host exhaust vents into open air instead of bouncing back from the wall toward the intake vents and sucking in hot air.
Hopefully there will be enough to work with to tune it well, custom fan curves will help too.Last edited: Jan 24, 2017CedricFP and ThePerfectStorm like this. -
There are lots of reports of people solving this by setting global dGPU, disabling Xboost features in Dragon Gaming Center, and making sure to set up G-sync / V-sync correctly - all reported causes for the "micro freezes".
There are so many moving parts in tuning Windows 10 - detuning it's crap running reports in the background at all hours - same for W10 scheduled crap - same for anti-virus, media indexing, Windows indexing, disable Hibernation and pagefile, and all the other background stuff that pops up - even before the G-sync/V-sync and Optimus glitches there have been plenty of interference in gaming sessions in the past.
Just tune it as the owner, don't blame it on MSI - it's the Intel / Windows 10 / Nvdia + others crap that causes these problems.tobi777 likes this. -

That's why I try to steer people away from Optimus, it's just so disappointing and aggravating as you get to know it's problems.
I wish MSI and others would make the MUX switch standard on all their laptops, from the lowest cost to the top models.ThePerfectStorm likes this. -
True, I've the MUX button on my GT72, the only annoyance is that if you want to switch graphics, you have to restart your PC, but still better than dealing with freezing all the time...hmscott likes this.
