Yeah, it is fairly informative about the changes (or lack of them) between the 1060 and 1070 versions. @tobi777 had posted it earlier in the thread. Thanks for posting it again anyway.

Agreed completely. Give me control over which GPU I use. While Optimus may get it right 85% of the time, I get it right 100% of the time.

A reboot is a very small price to pay. I basically haven't cared about rebooting since I got my first ever SSD, an OCZ Vertex 1 60g.

Today's SSDs blow it out of the water. I'd happily trade more reboots for the MUX switch ability. Why can't we have total control over our systems?

    Just try to explain
why 5400 rpm HDD instead of 7200?

Because slow is slow, 7200 vs 5400 is nothing compared to HDD vs SSD :)

Cheap, it's a cheap packin that doesn't raise the cost / price much, but gives the new owner some large storage space to tide themselves over until they can replace it with an SSD.

7200 might convince some that it's "high performance" storage, and not encourage them to upgrade to an SSD, 5400 says "dude, this is definitely slow - upgrade it ASAP to SSD -> fast" ;)

Probably since it saves MSI a small amount of money and the fact that most people only store data on the HDD, while games and programs are stored on the SSD. I will admit that these are not good enough reasons though.

    Ah yeah that makes sense.
I really am looking for a laptop which would be portable and quite powerfull. In that area competitors are Aorus or that slim Asus both with gtx1070 , so I wonder how do they perform head to head. Pricewise MSI and Asus are better options. And I always liked how MSI GS looked. Also Aorus is not avaliable in my place.
Recent Alienware could be also considered but those are chunkier, and failed big time with thermals lately.

    EDIT:
Oh both models of MSI GS 1070 rock 60Hz panels - such a pain.

You left out an important technical detail: they are also both 4k panels, running at 60hz.

    @GenTechPC => can you please verify G-sync for either the GS73VR / GS63VR 1070 modesl? The GS73VR 1070 page says G-sync, but not the GS63VR 1070 product page.

Yes but whats the use of 60hz panel if it cannot show properly the FPS that this latop is capable of.

The 4k resolution increases the load on the GPU reducing the FPS the GPU can render, and the CPU can actually lose some load due to the reduced FPS.

Look at games performance results @ 1080p and @ 4k, you will see a big drop in FPS on 4k - many games running at 30 FPS with a 1070 at Ultra settings, some up to and around 60 FPS, but few if any run faster than 60 FPS / HZ.

Many games won't be able to run much past 60 fps / 60 hz (G-sync/V-sync) or unlimited on a 1070 anyway, so any more hz, say 120hz @ 4k would never be attainable by a 1070.

The sweet spot for 1070 performance is generally 1440p (2k), not 2160p (4k), with 1080p @ 120hz also being an ok fit.

The 4k @ 60hz panel will be IPS / IPS-like, better color coverage and better off-angle viewing.

The faster FPS / HZ screens that are fast enough to respond to 120hz are all TN panels, not as nice as IPS / IPS-like viewing.

Read up a bit more, and you will understand why there isn't enough performance in a 1070 to justify even 4k @ 60hz, let alone higher FPS @ 4k :)

    @hmscott
I do not have to play every game @ 4k just because I have 4k screen.
Why not to go down to 1080p resolution on my 4k screen on some more demanding titles and try to enjoy battery smooth 90 fps? Oh wait I cant as it goes only 60hz.

Just trying to prove the point.

Also as you say if there is not enough guts for 4k display in this latop then why to have it in first place. Just let me have 120hz and 1080p on 15inch laptop it will be more than enough.

Yeah, 4k on Windows isn't 100% for all software, the menu and font scaling isn't good on many applications as reported by everyone that gets a 4k display.

The 60hz limit on the display is likely at all resolutions, but you don't know until you get it an try some Custom resolutions.

4k panel owners report dropping down to 1080p is fuzzy, with 1440p being a bit better - good enough to use and game on, so that's a thought. Still likely at 60hz too.

There was mention of a 4k 120hz panel coming sometime this year but nothing solid yet. IDK what would be able to drive 4k at 120 FPS, but I'd love to see it :)

You are still missing the part where MSI are talking about 1080p as the resolution, not 4k. 120hz vs 60hz @ 1080p - both are doable with current GPU hardware.

Today's GPU's, even a single 1080 GPU won't drive most games faster than 60 FPS at 4k resolution, so a faster than 60hz 4k screen doesn't make any sense yet.

When the 120hz 4k screen comes out, you are going to need a next generation GPU - maybe even faster than Volta.

You could try to run a 4k 120hz screen at 1080p / 1440p @ 120hz but the image would be fuzzier on those resolutions than 4k, so what's the point?

My point is that it would be enough to have 1080p @ 120Hz dispaly instead of 4k @ 60Hz in that Laptop, especially in 15inch variant. At least as an option.
Thats all I am saying, and I would be more than happy to buy it then. Now it leaves me with a doubt.

    I'm not sure a 60hz 4k screen was a good idea for these 1070 models, I'd also prefer a 1080p 60hz IPS model, and like you said you'd like a 120hz 1080p as well.

Perhaps with time there will be additional models offered across our regions too :)

Those prices look very very reasonable. Nice one posting this, you made me quite happy. :)

Edit: But at the same time I'm quite annoyed, because we don't have any resellers like GentechPC is in my country that can sell "user-modified" machines... :D

Well we do know it's coming with a 180w adapter when most 1070 laptops ship with a 230w, don't they?

I'm sort of feeling that even if the performance is between the 1060 and 1070, like a 1065 or a 1070GTO or something, to mix manufacturer metaphors, I'll still be interested, but a little disappointed, though not entirely surprised.

The question is, where along the line between the 1060 and 1070 does performance lie if it's TDP throttled, because it's quite a large difference between the two.

"The power consumption of the GTX 1070 is rumored to be slightly above the old GeForce GTX 980M and therefore around 120 Watt (including memory). Therefore, the 1070 can only be found in big and clunky gaming laptops. A low power (90 W) variant with less power consumption is rumored to be released early 2017 (with reduced performance)." - http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-1070-Laptop.169549.0.html

Ok, this could be info we're looking for... So indeed, it seems like it will be something like "1065" that @CedricFP mentioned.

Damn, so no full power 1070. But it is still better than the 1060. But can the GS63VR cool it? It was having enough trouble with cooling the 1060. It would be quite sad if this ends up throttling.

And a negative point to nVidia for not releasing it separately as the 1065 - now I bet all sorts of manufacturers will use this and claim "1070 performance" when it will be quite a bit lower.

The 1060 had a TDP of 80w: "The power consumption should be around 80 Watt"

    http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile...060-Laptop-Benchmarks-and-Specs.169547.0.html

So assuming the 90w "1065" is true, does anybody have an educated guess as to whether the cooling system will have been "revamped" to accommodate the extra 10w, or will fans just run louder and faster?

Also, can we assume linear scaling? If the standard 1070 TDP is 120w and it's been chopped to 90w, that's, what, 25% decrease in TDP? Would that mean necessarily a 25% decrease in performance?

Because, er, that is roughly the lead the 1070 has on the 1060? Like, how ridiculous would it be if this 1070 performed like a 1060? lol

    Agreed on that one...

Well, sort of we can, I'd assume, since they are all based on pascal architecture (only a ROUGH comparison). But now we can only guess... Still I'm really looking forward to how it will turn out to be.

Edit: Also there's quite useful website - www.userbenchmark.com - comparisons of CPUs, GPUs,... based on collected tests done by real users. For example comparison between 1060 and 1070 (I looked at PC versions, because I don't know the TDP for laptops):
    http://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-GTX-1070-vs-Nvidia-GTX-1060-6GB/3609vs3639

Based on that (only data, no science) - 1070 is 30-40% faster (TDP 120W vs 150W) than 1060, but there can be variations due to different clock speeds, memory clock speeds,......

Yeah I actually have no idea on how we can assume performance scaling based off of TDP numbers which is why I was asking. I'm sure somebody more knowledgable will chime in soon.

I'm also very curious on how it'll turn out, as well as thermal performance.

Anyone know if they'll come with 120hz screens? Not a big fan of 4k but 120hz would be nice on a 1070 (I know there's a 120hz on 1060 model right now floating around but 120 for 1060 seems questionable)

It would probably depend on the regional variation of what MSI is offering, and where you are buying it from. Plus, specs can change before the release date, so to really find out it probably will be a little bit before it could be confirmed.

iBuyPower had to cancel my order because the 1070 version was not being shipped out from MSI.

I had called iBuyPower twice to make sure this wasn't going to happen and they had twice assured me they had the chassis in stock... well, apparently that wasn't the case afterall... they said MSI was having issues and that they wouldn't be able to deliver the cassis until mid-late March...

I ended up going with the GE62vr Apache Pro instead... basically the same laptop just a bit thicker.

Oh well, I had a feeling it was too good to be true.

Here it is a little cheaper:
    https://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod...5341&cm_re=GE62MVR-_-9SIAAPK57T5341-_-Product

It looks the same thickness as the GT72, so maybe the GS63VR / GS73VR 1070 models will also be thicker?

I guess some fine tooth comparison between the final published specs will be needed, along with verification from owners on the weight / dimensions measured from the delivered product - they are all likely to be very much the same.

If so, then what's the point? Just get a GT72VR with 1070 or GT73VR with 1070 - the pricing is so high on these GE62/GE72 models so as to be in the same pricing range for all 1070 models, all thicker as well.

What are the differences between the GE/GS/GT 1070 models?

These GE62 1070 models are pretty darned expensive:

GE62mvr should be a little thinner than GT series... ~30mm vs 40mm (but we know how it is - thinnest point on the laptop is 30mm and at the vents 5000mm...). It's actually almost on par (dimensions wise) with the Asus GL502VS (also 1070 inside).
The funny part is, that in my country - the GE62mvr (1070) and GS63vr (1060) cost completely the same money and GT series notebooks are s-t-u-p-i-d-l-y expensive.

    Size comparison of GS63vr, GE62vr, GT62vr:

It's possible the new 1070's will become a bit "fatter" to compensate for the larger cooling, so I'd wait till the final specs are out, and maybe even for a review or field report to confirm the weight and dimensions.
