Just placed my order with XoticPC for the X460DX-216. Glad to finally be a part of the Owner's Lounge!
-
Finally i'm really disappointed about my x460dx.
Battery was 7% wear level, I got 1 dead pixel and last but not least my screen just crashed.
-
question, is there any way to completely disable the 540m? I tried setting it to integrated graphics in the nvidia settings but my battery consumption seems to be about the same when watching videos.

4 hrs left. Is that about right?
edit: it fluctuates, now it's at 96% and 4 hrs 40 mins left. -
I'm considering getting an MSI x460DX, and I've come across one that apparently has a 2GB GT650m in it. Anybody know anything about it?

If theres really a version with a 635M , which is equivelant to the 555m, i would be all over it in a heartbeat. Cant wait to hear more about it.
On a side note, can anyone comment about the maximum volume of this machine? No comments say the audio is good, but some people say it sucks and I have also found comments that it is better than an average laptop.
Can anyone compare it to something?
I'm coming from a 13 inch studio xps 1340 and the speakers were 2watt each and they sucked big time volume wise, the ones int he x460dx are 1.5watt each i'm just hoping they somehow output more volume.
If an owner make a video with the volume cranked up, it'd go a long ways in deciding to buy this. THanks -
I normally use earbuds so I don't bother other people, but from what I remember, the speakers are decent. They aren't bad at all.
-
I'm thinking about getting this laptop, to be specific the X460DX-073AU (Australia) , i5 2430M, GT 540M, 640GB HDD and would like some opinions on it? Would you recommend this laptop?
My main concerns are: does it overheat quickly? and I really haven't heard much about MSI, so has anyone had major problems and if so how was the MSI support?
Its either this laptop/Acer 3830/4830TG/Lenovo E420 that I will probably be getting so just trying to decide!
Thanks! -
The speakers to be honest are a little sub par. It's perfectly enough if you're just watching a movie in a quiet room, but if you're trying to play music in a somewhat noisy room it's a little underwhelming. My friend's couple years old lenovo's speakers are 100x louder.
Heatwise, the bottom gets quite hot when the dedicated gpu is in use, a little too hot to have in your lap, but normally it's fine. -
-
Hey guys, I'm also in the market for a laptop for uni. After getting a laptop, I'd probably most likely end up neglecting my desktop, so hence I want something with a decent grunt, which eventually led me to the MSI X460DX.
I have a question:
How is the quality of the laptop? Will it last me 2-3 years of daily use?
I've heard MSI's quality aren't the best, which got me thinking. I'll probably either get this laptop, or a 13inch Macbook Pro. -
-
whyamihere asked about the X460DX in the 4830TG thread... I saw that the X460DX-008US is available at Walmart.com for $718 w/ free shipping to store and FedEx Office® locations. Link: http://www.walmart.com/ip/MSI-14-500-GB-X460DX-008US/19394109
Coupled with the current $80 rebate valid until Jan 31, 2011, it seems like a decent price -- http://alimcomputer.com/images/jan_2012_msi_rebates.pdf
Here's my question though... for those that have the X460DX-216US, I'm assuming it's a GT540M and NOT a GT650M, correct? The GT650M designation looks like a typo, and only 3 sellers advertise it -- Provantage, Compsource and thenerds.net. The rest list the GT540M, which I'm assuming is the correct designation. -
How do you x460dx owners find the quality of the laptop? I'm from Australia, so its a little hard to check it out physically. -
I just beat Skyrim on my x460dx. I played it on medium settings with textures on high and I stayed at around 30 fps. The laptop never got too hot either. I love this computer!
The quality of the laptop is great. I find it to be better than most typical consumer notebooks, but I also wouldn't expect Thinkpad quality. My only gripe regarding quality is that it attracts fingerprints and gets dirty quickly.
If you're a neat freak, you probably shouldn't get this computer. -
Do you ever find the laptop to be sluggish, seeing it is only a dual core i5? -
I am stuck between deciding on the x460dx or the x460. Does anyone have the x460? I see no mention of the x460 i7 on the forums at all. I am not much of a gamer and am looking at getting a notebook mainly for photoshop, video editing, and multi tasking, but would also like the ability to run an occasional game or two. Quad core or dedicated graphics? Its a hard decision.
I have been looking at notebooks for weeks and originally decided on the Samsung Series 7 Chronos but after reading all the forums and considering the limited amount of stock on them I am now about 95% positive on the MSI X series.
One more question, what all can be upgraded on this laptop? Wireless card, ram, hdd, optical drive, cpu?
Thanks for any help on my decision in advance. -
-
Has anyone upgraded the cpu in this laptop? Is it easy to get to?
If it is possible I will get the i3 version of the x460dx for about $700 and put the 2630qm in it for another $200. -
1. Take off the bottom panel(possibly voiding your warranty).
2. Remove the heat sink.
3. Clean the old thermal paste of the heat sink and processor.
4. Apply thermal paste to the processor(I use Arctic MX-4)
5. Re-assemble.
I'll be posting a re-paste guide for my HP 8460p in the next few days. Basically the same process, I'll have plenty of pictures.
I actually sold my X460DX and replaced it with a cheaper laptop.I'm sure another X460 owner will be along soon who would be more than happy to make a adio test video.
-
Okay then, I am definitely getting the cheapest i3 version I can find, and putting in the 2630qm or 2740qm depending on the pricepoint. Adding 4 more gb ram, maybe upgrading the wireless card and staying under my $1000 budget.
Does upgrading the cpu allow faster or more RAM? Or is that limited by the motherboard.
Later I plan on upgrading the optical drive to a bluray burner and SSD drive. Its nice to find a laptop thats easy to customize that is also compact.

For the person asking about upgrading the cpu it is quite easy. I put a dual-core i7 2620m in mine(After buying it on ebay and selling the i5 it cost me like 50 bucks). I'm not too sure how well it'd deal with the extra heat of a quad though. -
I figured since there already is a quad i7 model the x460 it would be okay on the heat. Of course it doesn't have the dedicated graphics. If nothing else ill keep the nvidia off unless I have it on a cooling pad.

You could run Prime95 and HWMonitor and post a screen shot of the temps. -
Regarding upgrading to an i7 CPU, I would wait until the Ivy bridge chips are released, they will be pin for pin compatible with the motherboard (which uses Sandy bridge) but will have a smaller transistor size which will mean the same fast speeds at less power consumption and heat dissipation.
Also, I read that the new x460DX will be equipped with the GT630M which is the GT540M rebadged, the specs are basically the same though clocks may be a hit higher... -
2. The 630M is already out in X460's. -
-
I'm not sure whether to get this, or the base model MBP 13 inch. -
Plus, if you need Windows you're going to have to pay an extra $150 for it. -
My last notebook was a GT780DXR and sadly it had to go. I need another notebook but preferably a thin notebook (under 1") but with a dvd drive. My other 2 options are the Samsung Series 7 (1a) and the HP ENVY 15 (2). This would be option 1b.
Ive been reading the owners board of those two laptops and its real negative. I read through this board and the majority seem to like this notebook. Right now im typing on a DELL Inspiron 600m (lol) and I dont seem to mind the low resolution of 1024x768. So my question is:
Hows this notebook for movie watching? And when I mean movie watching, I mean full 1080p movies. I know it will scale down and stuff but is the experience lacking?
My dark horse choice is a 13.3" MBP. Don't ask me why. -
Just orderd a X460DX-096 from NCIX. Should be here in a couple of days, definitely excited about getting a new laptop, it has been too many years.

Has anyone actually received a rebate from msi ? if so how long did it take? I noticed they're offering a 50 dollar rebate currently on this model.

This Msi doesn't have any heating problems? I coulda swore that I've read that somewhere

I'll try to take notice and post what I find once I get my laptop. -

I'm looking for a notebook for college that can be used for gaming as well. I've narrowed my choices down to this and the Lenovo IdeaPad Y470.
I'm leaning a little towards this one because of the battery life, but I can get an i7 in the Y470 for the same price (with the $50 mail-in rebate).
What would be some overall advantages over the Y470 and do you think this notebook could stand up to the day-to-day life of a college student? -

Screen: Above average, but not spectacular.
Volume: Kinda tinny, but not horrible.
