Finally i'm really disappointed about my x460dx.
Battery was 7% wear level, I got 1 dead pixel and last but not least my screen just crashed.

question, is there any way to completely disable the 540m? I tried setting it to integrated graphics in the nvidia settings but my battery consumption seems to be about the same when watching videos.

If you go into the Nvidia control panel you can tell it to use the intergrated graphics , Nvidia only, or auto select.

Send your notebook to ERC ASAP(as soon as possible). You won`t regret and probably msi will change your LCD Panel.

How long is your battery life? Right now, while typing this, I have 75% charge and an estimated 5:23 left. I have 7% wear too.

98%, movie paused in vlc and chrome with 10 tabs open, running on integrated card.

4 hrs left. Is that about right?

edit: it fluctuates, now it's at 96% and 4 hrs 40 mins left.

If theres really a version with a 635M , which is equivelant to the 555m, i would be all over it in a heartbeat. Cant wait to hear more about it.

On a side note, can anyone comment about the maximum volume of this machine? No comments say the audio is good, but some people say it sucks and I have also found comments that it is better than an average laptop.

Can anyone compare it to something?

I'm coming from a 13 inch studio xps 1340 and the speakers were 2watt each and they sucked big time volume wise, the ones int he x460dx are 1.5watt each i'm just hoping they somehow output more volume.

If an owner make a video with the volume cranked up, it'd go a long ways in deciding to buy this. THanks

If I was by mine I'd post a video :) I normally use earbuds so I don't bother other people, but from what I remember, the speakers are decent. They aren't bad at all.

I'm thinking about getting this laptop, to be specific the X460DX-073AU (Australia) , i5 2430M, GT 540M, 640GB HDD and would like some opinions on it? Would you recommend this laptop?

My main concerns are: does it overheat quickly? and I really haven't heard much about MSI, so has anyone had major problems and if so how was the MSI support?

Its either this laptop/Acer 3830/4830TG/Lenovo E420 that I will probably be getting so just trying to decide!

    Thanks!

The speakers to be honest are a little sub par. It's perfectly enough if you're just watching a movie in a quiet room, but if you're trying to play music in a somewhat noisy room it's a little underwhelming. My friend's couple years old lenovo's speakers are 100x louder.

Heatwise, the bottom gets quite hot when the dedicated gpu is in use, a little too hot to have in your lap, but normally it's fine.

It doesn't overheat at all. I've overclocked the gpu and it didn't go higher than 74C. I did have to send mine in for a new motherboard, the Nvidia gnu disappeared. It took 3 weeks.

Hey guys, I'm also in the market for a laptop for uni. After getting a laptop, I'd probably most likely end up neglecting my desktop, so hence I want something with a decent grunt, which eventually led me to the MSI X460DX.

    I have a question:

How is the quality of the laptop? Will it last me 2-3 years of daily use?

I've heard MSI's quality aren't the best, which got me thinking. I'll probably either get this laptop, or a 13inch Macbook Pro.

I dont think the 13 inch MBP has enough "grunt" to replace ur desktop. I think the x460dx barely would depending on the age of your desktop

whyamihere asked about the X460DX in the 4830TG thread... I saw that the X460DX-008US is available at Walmart.com for $718 w/ free shipping to store and FedEx Office® locations. Link: http://www.walmart.com/ip/MSI-14-500-GB-X460DX-008US/19394109

Coupled with the current $80 rebate valid until Jan 31, 2011, it seems like a decent price -- http://alimcomputer.com/images/jan_2012_msi_rebates.pdf

There is if it's being used as a portable machine for CUDA research. =) I have a desktop w/ a Tesla 6GB I run simulations on, but knowing this laptop was available with 2GB VRAM this before I sprung for a 4830TG would have been useful. Oh well, haha.

Not quite yet. Almost. Buy.com has the X460DX-216US for $820.99 w/ Free Shipping. They have the X460DX-008US for $725.99 w/ Free Shipping as well. Here's the surprise... apparently they have a 45 day Return Policy, even if the laptop is opened -- I just called and asked about this. Seems like a good deal for anyone that's on the fence about getting one. Oh, and of course the rebate mentioned above! $50 on the 216US, $80 on the 008US.

Actually, there are 9.5mm Blu-ray burners available currently. For anyone who wants to upgrade the optical drive, look for UJ-232A or UJ-242A on eBay. If you're lucky, you might find a US seller, but I got mine from China -- a Lenovo branded UJ-242A that worked just fine. =) Mine cost $150 shipped via EMS; took about 11 days over the holiday season to get to me. I'm convinced there are no Blu-ray combo drives available for sale or they went the way of the dodo.

Here's my question though... for those that have the X460DX-216US, I'm assuming it's a GT540M and NOT a GT650M, correct? The GT650M designation looks like a typo, and only 3 sellers advertise it -- Provantage, Compsource and thenerds.net. The rest list the GT540M, which I'm assuming is the correct designation.

Yeah, after some researching I've realized this.

How do you x460dx owners find the quality of the laptop? I'm from Australia, so its a little hard to check it out physically.

I just beat Skyrim on my x460dx. I played it on medium settings with textures on high and I stayed at around 30 fps. The laptop never got too hot either. I love this computer! :D

The quality of the laptop is great. I find it to be better than most typical consumer notebooks, but I also wouldn't expect Thinkpad quality. My only gripe regarding quality is that it attracts fingerprints and gets dirty quickly.

If you're a neat freak, you probably shouldn't get this computer.

Alright, thanks for the input. Considering buying the laptop now.

Do you ever find the laptop to be sluggish, seeing it is only a dual core i5?

I am stuck between deciding on the x460dx or the x460. Does anyone have the x460? I see no mention of the x460 i7 on the forums at all. I am not much of a gamer and am looking at getting a notebook mainly for photoshop, video editing, and multi tasking, but would also like the ability to run an occasional game or two. Quad core or dedicated graphics? Its a hard decision.

I have been looking at notebooks for weeks and originally decided on the Samsung Series 7 Chronos but after reading all the forums and considering the limited amount of stock on them I am now about 95% positive on the MSI X series.

One more question, what all can be upgraded on this laptop? Wireless card, ram, hdd, optical drive, cpu?

Thanks for any help on my decision in advance.

Has anyone upgraded the cpu in this laptop? Is it easy to get to?

If it is possible I will get the i3 version of the x460dx for about $700 and put the 2630qm in it for another $200.

You have access to everything from the bottom panel:

Yes, all you have to do is:

    1. Take off the bottom panel(possibly voiding your warranty).
    2. Remove the heat sink.
    3. Clean the old thermal paste of the heat sink and processor.
    4. Apply thermal paste to the processor(I use Arctic MX-4)
    5. Re-assemble.

I'll be posting a re-paste guide for my HP 8460p in the next few days. Basically the same process, I'll have plenty of pictures.

I actually sold my X460DX and replaced it with a cheaper laptop. :) I'm sure another X460 owner will be along soon who would be more than happy to make a adio test video.

Okay then, I am definitely getting the cheapest i3 version I can find, and putting in the 2630qm or 2740qm depending on the pricepoint. Adding 4 more gb ram, maybe upgrading the wireless card and staying under my $1000 budget.

Does upgrading the cpu allow faster or more RAM? Or is that limited by the motherboard.

Later I plan on upgrading the optical drive to a bluray burner and SSD drive. Its nice to find a laptop thats easy to customize that is also compact.

The X460 has the HM65 chipset, and according to the link below, it supports up to 1866MHz memory. I would get 1333MHz memory unless it costs the same or close to 1600MHz memory. You won't notice a difference. You can go up to 16GB's.

I'd be willing to bet that it's nothing more than a rebranded 540m. Nvidia does this stuff all the time, especially when there is a long delay between GPU generations like there is now.

For the person asking about upgrading the cpu it is quite easy. I put a dual-core i7 2620m in mine(After buying it on ebay and selling the i5 it cost me like 50 bucks). I'm not too sure how well it'd deal with the extra heat of a quad though.

I figured since there already is a quad i7 model the x460 it would be okay on the heat. Of course it doesn't have the dedicated graphics. If nothing else ill keep the nvidia off unless I have it on a cooling pad.

It runs very cool with the i5, so i7 shouldn't be more then 10C higher. The i5 in my X460DX never went higher than 76C, so the quad shouldn't go over 90C.

You could run Prime95 and HWMonitor and post a screen shot of the temps. :)

Regarding upgrading to an i7 CPU, I would wait until the Ivy bridge chips are released, they will be pin for pin compatible with the motherboard (which uses Sandy bridge) but will have a smaller transistor size which will mean the same fast speeds at less power consumption and heat dissipation.

Also, I read that the new x460DX will be equipped with the GT630M which is the GT540M rebadged, the specs are basically the same though clocks may be a hit higher...

    1. We aren't sure they will be compatible with the system bios. They might fit, but they also might not work in SB systems.

    2. The 630M is already out in X460's.

If you plan on gaming at all, don't get the Macbook. It has an Intel HD 3000 video card, which is nice, but not fast enough for even CoD BO.

Plus, if you need Windows you're going to have to pay an extra $150 for it.

My last notebook was a GT780DXR and sadly it had to go. I need another notebook but preferably a thin notebook (under 1") but with a dvd drive. My other 2 options are the Samsung Series 7 (1a) and the HP ENVY 15 (2). This would be option 1b.

Ive been reading the owners board of those two laptops and its real negative. I read through this board and the majority seem to like this notebook. Right now im typing on a DELL Inspiron 600m (lol) and I dont seem to mind the low resolution of 1024x768. So my question is:

Hows this notebook for movie watching? And when I mean movie watching, I mean full 1080p movies. I know it will scale down and stuff but is the experience lacking?

My dark horse choice is a 13.3" MBP. Don't ask me why.

I am very happy with the price. It was between the Lenovo U400 with the Core i5 and the MSI. In the end I went for the MSI because it has the SD Card reader built in, and that a lot of the reviews I read said the U400 had a mediocre trackpad that reacted to being brushed when typing.

From the reviews I've read about half of them say it got quite warm and the other half said it didn't. I imagine it gets a bit too warm on the lap when used with the discrete graphics.

I'll try to take notice and post what I find once I get my laptop.

I'm looking for a notebook for college that can be used for gaming as well. I've narrowed my choices down to this and the Lenovo IdeaPad Y470.

I'm leaning a little towards this one because of the battery life, but I can get an i7 in the Y470 for the same price (with the $50 mail-in rebate).

What would be some overall advantages over the Y470 and do you think this notebook could stand up to the day-to-day life of a college student?

Nope, it runs very cool. It even runs cool when overclocked:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/msi/622834-msi-x460-540m-gpu-overclocking.html

    Battery Life: 6-7 hours.
Screen: Above average, but not spectacular.
Volume: Kinda tinny, but not horrible.

Definitely the X460. the y470 only gets 3.5 hours of battery life. Build quality is decent, it definitely doesn't feel like it's going to fall apart.

Not to burst anyone's bubble, but you're only gonna get over 6 hours if your screen is dimmed all the way and browsing the web or typing something up. Watching movies/videos my battery life is around 4.5 hours. Playing games... maybe 2.
