I was positive with getting the x460dx and putting a i7 in it, but after looking at the y470 again I am unsure. The Lenovo can be purchased cheaper with a i7 already, and upgraded with msata for about what I would pay for the msi. The only thing holding me back on the Lenovo is the shorter battery life and additional weight. I found a refurbished y470 with an i7 and 1yr warranty for $700!

If the warranty falls through on my 11.6" acer 1810TZ, I'll be needing a new laptop soon. And this has been the best candidate with a discrete GPU (besides LG P330).

How portable would you guys rate x460dx?

I also purchased a X460DX-096US from NCIX. Got it for $766.13 ($109 off) during their Boxing Day sale. You definitely won't be disappointed ;D

Very portable. It's less than an inch thick and very light.

Loving the x460dx so far, minus the glossy plastic and screen. D:

Was wondering though, has anyone found or purchased a tpu keyboard cover? The only ones I was able to find were for the X400 and 410.

finally got mine from xoticPC. Not that they were slow, I was just so excited!

This thing is awesome. I'm on battery life with the Turbobattery+ , and the battery life indicator is showing 8hr29 minutes @ 92 percent.

It did get a bit warm last night when I had been gaming for about 7 hours on Star Wars: The Old Republic. Runs the game great though: high settings, full resolution.

So far my only complaint is keeping the fingerprints off of this thing, but I knew that going in.

My x460DX showed up yesterday. My initial impressions from a couple hours setting up the laptop are overall good.

The laptop is deceptively light for its size.

The screen seems marginally better than the Lenovo Y410 it is replacing.
    The keyboard feels really responsive.
The touchpad coating has more resistance than I am used to, so that will just take getting used to. Also the two finger scrolling could take some getting used to. Is it possible to configure the touchpad to have the right hand small section be used for scrolling like older touchpads?

Overall responsiveness of the laptop is good. There was minimal bloat to uninstall, took me less than 20 minutes to uninstall all the bloatware.

The button under the touchpad does show finger smudges all the time, as does the plastic on the sides of the keyboard. They are something I was aware of, and don't really care about, but it is worth mentioning.

In the next couple days, as I use it more, I should be able to post some impressions on the battery life and temperature.

    Yes, completely.

Make sure you have the actual drivers installed for the touchpad, and go through every tab.

I found almost all of the behavioural peculiarities were because of weird default driver settings. Turning off the funky esoteric stuff fixed almost everything, and tuning settings made it perform pretty well.

I also turned on a couple disabled things (including the vertical and horizontal scrolling, like you're looking for) and I use it a lot at higher sensitivity for really rapid scrolling.

I think you'll probably get used to the textured pad quickly enough. It is a bit different coming from a smooth texture, but I like it. However, for heavy, rapid movement, sometimes I feel like I'm lighting a match!

    Enjoy!

Thanks, that did work out with the updated drivers.

I came across an issue that others might be interested in. After a couple of hours of use the Wifi would not work, or was really, as in slower than dialup, slow.

I did a factory restore and it exhibited the same problems. Eventually I found an Intel driver setting through the Device Manager properties dialog for the Wifi card and forced the card to only use 802.11g. This fixed the problem. As a note my wireless router is only a 802.11 b/g router, so I think the Intel driver was getting messed up by not having a wireless n network available.

I'm using these drivers for my touchpad.
ElanTech Touchpad Driver v 8.0.7.0 - TechSpot Drivers
Nice improvement over stock. Overall I think our touchpad is pretty solid. 2 finger scrolling is actually pretty smooth and responsive unlike some of the synaptics laptops I've used.

    Notebook keeps vibrating.

Ok so most likely it's just the HDD, but even after a shutdown it still continues to vibrate. If I leave the computer unplugged, it stops.

Is it normal for the HDD to still be active even when the computer has been shutdown?

Again It only vibrates when the charger is plugged in.

    Charger:
    Input 100-240v
    Output 19v

The X460DX model that comes with an i7 quad only has Intel graphics. MSI removed the Nvidia chip.

    Hey guys,

I recently bought the MSI x460dx Can model (last week to be exact). Everything was working fine, maybe a bit hot while gaming but other than that everything was smooth, fast, and clean.

Few hours ago, i was playing a game i usually run on it and all of sudden the laptop crashes. The screen flickered for a second with many colors and then shut off. I haven't been able to turn it on since. When i try, the light for power lights up and the fan spins, other than that, it does nothing. I`m extremely frustrated as you would imagine and especially because i bought this laptop specifically because my last one would overheat and shut down.

If anyone has any idea what has happened or heard of this issue and knows how to fix it that would be awesome. I`m going to call MSI tomorrow and give' em hell. I really hope this is an issue with only my model as the aesthetic as well as the general feel of the laptop is superb.

sounds like what happened to my first x460dx. Couple of days after purchasing i tried to turn it on and got the exact same response as you describe. Luckily they replaced it with a new one under their dead-on-arrival protocol (counts as a DOA as long as any defects occur within a couple of days of purchase). I even got a small component upgrade. No problems with my new one, it runs like a champ.

is the power light blue or orange by the way?

also, have you tried the trick of trying to power up with the battery removed?

sounds like a problem with the gpu. happened to my old hp laptop where it would turn on and lights would work but no screen. had to do a reflow thing for it. best bet would be to turn it in to get it fixed. still waiting for mines to come in. it's been almost 2 weeks in phase 2 >.<

I just got my x460dx. When it says that the thing about switchable graphics, does that mean that there is a button or config thing I need to hit or does it switch automatically somehow?

It has Nvidia Optimus, so it switches automatically. Blue light if intel hd 3000 is in use and orange when nvidia gt 540m is in use.

Does anyone have an i3 version of this laptop? I'm concerned about CPU temperatures, because it could theoretically throttle at as low as 85C. Do the temperatures ever get that hot and are there any problem with throttling with i3? I'm looking for something at 14" with decent discrete GPU and under $700. However, it can't be Y470, so my options are very limited.

I have the i3 version and i've been gaming on it since September for hours everyday and there are no throttling or overheating issues. gpu temps stay between 78-81 @ full load using HWinfo32 sensors.

    Hey guys,

I was wondering if anyone has upgraded the stock wifi card w/ an Intel 6230? I upgraded mine yesterday, but I can't seem to get the bluetooth fn key to toggle off the bluetooth. Wifi works, toggling wifi works, bluetooth works, but toggling bluetooth doesn't. I swapped back the stock 1030, to see if I had broken something, and toggling bluetooth via 1030 works! :(
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Thought I'd post my experience with a caddy- I managed to take the face plate off the stock ODD by pushing on a tab on the side ( pictured).. Unfortunately, the tabs didn't match up with the caddy I got, so I had to break off two of them. It's not very secure, but it'll work until I can think of a better solution--and it looks a LOT better than the faceplate that came with the caddy. (sorry for awful cameraphone pics)

looks great! just signed up to participate in this thread as I've ordered an X460DX here in australia and just want to know, what problems should I look out for as soon as I get this laptop in my hands? dead pixels obviously, but is there anything else such as faulty hinges or squealing noises that I should be looking for while in my DOA period?

and secondly, is it worth the upgrade to 8GB of RAM?

what geforce drivers are you all using? i see that a lot of people got a 5.8 on their WEI but i downloaded the latest ones and got a 5.6. I'm currently using the 285.62 WHQL from the nvidia site. I had a 6.7 when I received the computer from exotic pc but i think that might have been off.

Hey everyone, I bought an x460dx a couple of months ago thanks to the advice on this forum. I love it so much I decided to stop lurking and sign up for an account.

I'm just having one problem - the first week I got my x460dx I plugged some headphones into the audio output and the little plastic bit around the audio output broke right off. It still works ok, it's just missing the plastic ring and any headphone jack I plug into it now wiggles around a bit.

I've tried to sort it out through warranty but MSI aren't being very helpful - they say it's not a warranty issue. It seems like such a small thing, I feel that I could probably fix it myself. But I don't know where to get the part, or even what it's called. Can anyone help me out?

I'm having problems with the wifi at my school. It's really slow for me it basically caps at about 40kb/s and I can't stream YouTube videos without multiple pauses in between. Sometimes I can't even check my e-mail My friends have no problems with their non-x460dx laptops. Any ideas?

Can you please explain how to do this? I tried looking around the settings in the network settings but I couldn't find it. I also did several google searches and all I could come up with was instructions for changing the settings on a router.

    Here you go:
    control panel\network and sharing center

change adapter settings (menu on left)

right click on wireless network connection - properties

    configure

    click on card advanced
than click on property wireless mode and change value to "g" or "g/n"

this is how it looks like with my intel 5100 agn card

    hope it helps

I was also experiencing a very slow connection that almost caused me to RMA the laptop. After running multiple ping tests I discovered that I would get 30% packet loss and a very high transmit time. I decided to try a usb network card and found it alleviated any problems and restored data. I then thought that it was the built-in network card that was defective. Well, I thought wrong. It ended up being the advanced power settings for the card. When unplugged the computer defaults to "medium performance" mode. Changing this setting to "maximum performance" (I think that is the setting) restored speeds. Hope this helps.

    Hi,
I've got a broken display bezel and was wondering if anyone knew where I could get a spare part. Does MSI offer shipping of spare parts or are there any online retailers who could offer the specific spare parts and international shipping?
Highly preferably form the EU due to shipping costs..

    Thank you.

    edit:
I've added a picture showing the broken places.(2 parts need to be replaced.)

    edit2:
Maybe someone knows the serial number of the broken parts? Someone said theres a label with the number on the inside of the bezel, but I don't want to dissemble it now only to get the number. That would make finding the correct part easier.

had my laptop back for only a week and it looks like im going to have to file my 3rd RMA request

i made my purchase 5 months ago and im on my second laptop and now 3rd rma. its been in repairs almost as long as it has been with me

Im a university student and i cant afford for this to happen. Financially and academically

dont think im ever going to buy an MSI laptop again.
