Yup, the app is called 'MSI Burn Recovery' and it'll burn the factory image to multiple DVDs as you stated. I haven't done it either, but may need to if I plan to use the stock HDD in another system.
Also, by pressing the F3 key repeatedly during bootup, 'F3 Recovery' will run, which restores Windows and all of the bloatware exactly like the factory image. It restores from the 11GB hidden partition. You can see this 'Recovery Partition' under Disk Management.
So before any owners do a fresh install like I talked about in my previous post, it'll be a good idea to burn the factory image to DVD using 'MSI Burn Recovery.'

Got my new GE60 today. The computer is making a soft clicking noise every couple of seconds. Any idea about it what it could be? I've spun up the fan using the fan boost thing and the noise doesnt increase or decrease so i'm assuming its the hard drive.
-
Sounds like the HDD. Is the soft clicking coming from the front left of the notebook?
-
It looks like a clean install on the stock HDD will break F3 Recovery.
Check out this link:

Prior to a clean install, you can use MSI Burn Recovery to burn the factory image to DVD or just save it as an ISO file. -
-
Edit: The clicking sound seems to be happening less often now. I'm not sure if its just me not paying attention to it or the sound is getting less frequent. Any way to test the hdd for errors or any ideas about what might be causing the sound
Edit2: The sound is now only occurring with startup and appears to stop after that. Could this sound have anything to do with intel rapid storage technology? -
Hey!
I''ve already asked in the -GT 650M Benchmark- thread but didn't got any respond yet. So I also got the GE60 i5 650m 4gb some days ago and couldn't manage to run any 30x.xx drivers properly. Is there already an official solution for the optimus notebooks not being supported?
How do you guys handle this so far? -
It is incredibly frustrating that there are no official drivers for this, what is the point on releasing it without official drivers, it could potentially perform far greater with them, you would think it is a priority.
Also, what kind of glasses are needed for 3D viewing on the laptop, active shutter or not? -
Gold Runner, You can run CrystalDiskInfo to check the HDD's health:
Crystal Dew World
WangaTanga, there are no WHQL certified drivers from nVidia yet. Optimus works fine for me with the stock MSI 296.31 drivers.
PharmD, doesn't 3D require a 120Hz LCD?
Re: GPU Drivers, both ATI & nVidia are always late to release working drivers for new GPUs. Anybody remember the fiasco in 2006/7 after Vista and DX10 were released? We are all just beta testers these days. -
-
-
Gold Runner, if it's the HDD softly clicking, then this is normal.
If it bothers you, then download this app:
https://sites.google.com/site/quiethdd/
Please make sure you read the entire webpage.
PharmD, I've never used 3D, and I believe that the stock drivers don't support 3D. You'd see an additional section in the nVidia Control Panel for the 3D Driver. Maybe you can download the 3D driver from the nVidia website. You'll need the nVidia glasses and a 120Hz LCD connected over HDMI I believe. Your framerate with be halved when running 3D games since 2 frames are displayed at once for 3D. I don't know if it'll work on this laptop. Why don't you try and let us know. -
Alright I finally got my GE60, here some unboxing pics:
If you notice some french it seems to be a US-international version which I dont see anything noticeable other than a Euro hotkey next the the US dollar so no difference at all. I do have a question though, what exactly is the MSI program "Supercharger"? -
-
Has anyone played Skyrim on this and if so, what settings work best? -
Thanks for the clean windows install advice and links. I ended up downloading the iso and put it on a usb.
As for the HDD -> SSD swap, it was fairly simple. No wires involved. The only think I messed up on, was plugging the SSD in when I forgot to put the bracket on it from the HDD. I rushed it! The SSD was kind of stuck in there, but I managed to get it out to put the bracket on. -
Nice to meet you guys, I'm new here.
I'm in trouble with "nvidia driver has stopped working and has recovered" . It occurs constantly after I overclocked my GT650M by using MSI AFTERBURNER. Nevertheless, for the first day I overclocked, I was able to play all the games continuously without such problem. I have no idea why the problem appears just now; is this a bad signal or something? Although If I stop overclocking, it would run like a charm. Anyway, +135/+1000 overclocking satisfies me enough and I have seen many people can do it without any problem. Could you please give me some suggestions?
Driver version: 296.31 since 304 made my Optimus technology inactive. -
That means you are overclocking too much. Just because it works for your friends doesn't mean it will work for laptop of the same model.
The supported and expected frequencies are the stock ones -- if you can get more from overclocking that's great but you can't be sure of it for every system.
If you really care you could repaste it, try elevate the laptop so the vents below aren't blocked, try a cooler or big fan, turn the Air conditioning on -
I got this laptop several days ago, sorry I haven't said much yet.
Maybe I'll type up a mini review soon, my opinions are solidifying a bit.
I did a clean install, and modified the ini file to get the 304.48 beta driver working (I can post instructions if anyone cares)
I got 2959 3dmark11, which is below krandor, darn you (probably my high ambient temps here)
Might get to get an SSD next week and wipe everything again, LOL...
Maybe I should just wait until I get windows 8, which should be only $15 with the ongoing promo.
I'll do Windows 8 if I can get the start menu back and kill metro (blasphemy I know, sorry)
Free xbox in a combo deal came with it, selling it effectively lowered the price of the laptop $140 for me.
Wow episode 2 of walking dead was awesome, just played it -
so i just got my ge60 today too.. haven't tested any games yet because my dad is raping the internet. but in general i find the keyboard satisfying. my previous laptop was the 2011 Macbook pro which has a backlit keyboard. and i haven't experienced any differences in terms of typing efficiency.

SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
Threw money at Ken, so I'm expecting my GE60 on Thursday. (I asked him to delay my shipment a bit since I'm out of town, which he graciously did).
I'm going to have so much fun making this thing scream. -
hi.. i have MSI ge60 I5 with GTX 660M GPU. Im testing my laptop game performance for a couple of days now and it seems my GPU doesn't maximize its potential. I only got an average of 30 fps in dirt3 at high settings which is not good when it is compared with MSI GE60 game performance review.
To MSI GE60 users can you share me your fps obtained in Dirt3? I need to compare. Thanks -
feverZerO: this whole thread discusses it, the main problem is that there are no official drivers released yet for the 660m so we are essentially using drivers for the 550m. None of us believe things will be maximized until they are released. Head over to the Nvidia forums and put in a driver request for the new beta drivers, we all did it.
Also guys, I did crystalmark on the SSD and my performance numbers are below, any idea why they are so slow? Isn't this SATA 3? I have it in the regular hard drive bay, it is a Patriot Pyro SE and should be maxed at 550 both ways.Attached Files:

thanks Pharmd. so the low fps is normal on some demanding games. thanks for the info...
-
Sequential reads are the least important for an SSD anyhow, it's going to be overwhelmingly random in practice -
Just got my hands on my GE70, and ordered a GE60 for reference purposes + i'm going to give it away at a local raffle here
So far despite the driver concerns with nvidia, I'm loving every bit of this laptop - it's far from perfect but it's still a great lightweight option.
Battery wise - wish they'd let us put in like a 9-cell but can't win them all. -
I'm sorry if you have already tried this. -
So 660m performance is indeed compromised. Thanks for explicitly mentioning it. Please post here when the new drivers are released and if that makes the 660m perform as it should. Then I will buy the GE60.

Okay so I used a thermaltake laptop cooler (10" fan) and ran Furmark again but max temp was still 93C max on the 1080p benchmark. The fan on the thermaltake doesn't spin all that fast but I was still hoping it would help a tad.
-
For now, if your other games runs inefficiently too, I suggest that maybe you should check your nvidia setting; did you optimize it? if so set it to default - I bet you tried this but just to be sure.

Please do not blame me if I do something wrong; this's my first time.
The games which I have tested on :
Resident Evil5, Alone in the dark, The Sims3, Shogun 2 total war, Crysis 2, The Witcher 2 and others MMO-RPG.
Every game in the list run fluently for me except for The Witcher 2 which I have low fps on boxing scene;
I play all these game on max setting unless I want to play with 60fps, I have to play on lower settings.
System Model: MSI GE60
CPU : I5 3210M
VGA : 650M 2GB GDDR5@970 Overclocked
- Furmark 1.10.1
full fan speed
OC GPU 970/3000
Max Temperature : 72C
Run time: 17 miniute
- Resident Evil 5
This game has best performance compared to its graphic, it normally runs at 60fps
Graphic Setting
- Shogun 2 Fall of the samurai
Most demanding game for me usually run at 15 - 30 fps; depending on how much units there are. However, It runs fine for me
Graphic Setting
I have asked my friend to lend me his Dirt3 game; probably tomorrow I will post its benchmark.
If anyone want me to test other games, feel free to tell me the name. -
it's really a publicity to promote anti-piracy of mine
In any case, the GE70, again not perfect, seems to get the job done. Wish they'd fix the driver issues though. -
-
Is it wise to buy a GE60 now (especially with a gimped GPU, which most attribute to drivers)? Or are there any worthy competitors releasing a similar laptop in less than 2 months?
-
-
Have we proven this is gimped yet? Or is it still an assumption based off one persons benchmarks?
-
My RE5 Benchmark Result (GTX 660M)
Hopehelp's RE5 Benchmark Result (GT 650M)
-
Sorry, I was reckless so the picture do not include all the 4 section of benchmark.
Graphic setting is the same as before
I wonder that can 660M overclock? If it is able to do so it would be more powerful. -
hopehelp is that performance overclock?. i don't overclock because im noob at overclocking.. what program are you using?. sorry for the noob question. can it damage or overheat ur gpu?
-
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
I'm really interested in Hopehelp's furmark benchmark. 72C for twenty minutes (though I don't know the exact settings; could you tell us your exact settings?)
Since the 660m is just a 650m with higher clocks, and Hopehelp was using a GE60 chassis, that looks veeery interesting. -
-
Has anybody tried playing Battlefield 3 on the GE60 and if yes, what is your fps.
-
My system is overclocked by using MSI Afterburner; it is simple to overclock using this software, in addition 650m does not ask to add more voltage for high overclocking so I think it would be more safe from being damaged and overheated. Anyway, you can always check your gpu temperature thus you would be aware before anything bad happens.
Hi, Forge do you mean my surrounding? Temperature around my room is 25-26
I did not use cooling pad but full-speed fan button is on. I'm sorry if I misunderstand the meaning; I'm Asian
- Dirt showdown
Graphic Setting - all high, advanced light is off and Msaax4

Benchmark Result
This is not dirt 3 but I think there should not be much different in comparison. However, I will share dirt 3 benchmark soon. -
I have been following this thread for some time now and I am considering buying the MSI GE60 for college. The biggest concern to be is that the CPU and the GPU are reaching 90C+
Did anyone bought their Msi GE60 with thermal paste or applied it them self? If you did can you post some temp benchmark? Did it affect the temp significantly? And if you order our Msi GE60 from gentech of xoticpc with thermal paste does 2 year warranty still remain? -
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
(Inside family joke; we're various brands of Asian, too).
Anyway, I was wondering what Furmark settings you were using (extreme burn mode, post processing, etcetera). Also, try doing it without using the turbo fan. -
System Model: MSI GE60
CPU : I5 3210M
VGA : 650M 2GB GDDR5@970 Overclocked
FurMark 1.0.1 Benchmark - 1280*720

Finally, as I promise.
Dirt 3
Gameplay Benchmark
Graphic settings - All high,Vsync is on and MSAAX4
The game runs at 60fps almost entirely the time. I think this is one of the best game performace I have tested.
Benchmark Result
Graphic settings - All high,Vsync is off and MSAAX4
* Before I updated to 1.2 patch, I think I got 66 average fps though I'm unsure.
To feverZerO, If you get average fps much below 60, I think there might be something wrong with your game. Have you already try benchmark?
