Oh. I'm pretty new to this so what do you suggest I do and does changing the thermal compound void the warranty? Thanks.

If you read through some of the thread you will see we talked about this for about 10 pages not so far back. Yes it is normal and I also answered the question about the laptop cooler, it didn't do anything, maybe decreased it by a degree. But the Furmark 1080 test gets me to 93-94 C as well after a the entire thing completes. I also posted temps and pictures of various 3d mark tests that I ran with both stock and new drivers and Vantage and 11.

First, get a GPU monitoring tool (GPU-Z, MSI Afterburner, etcetera) and run it while your system is idle. Check what clocks your 660m is at.

Concerning paste, no, it doesn't void your warranty, unless your repasting directly breaks something.

So the GE60 definitely has mSATA? I'm trying to decide whether to ditch the HDD for a 256GB faster SSD or install a smaller mSATA and keep the HDD. Newegg doesn't have much options for SSD, and the better Mushkin drives are out of stock.

    Yes, it definitely supports mSATA.

Try browsing around MyDigitalDiscount and check their mSATA SSD section. I got a MyDigitalSSD Bulletproof 3 256GB.

    And it is SATA 3?

The GE60 was so cheap that I guess I don't mind dropping $300 on an mSATA drive. Keeping the 750GB HDD that it comes with would be nice as I wouldn't need to use an external as much.

Jesus God, for the last time any model of the GE60 and GE70 does come with mSATA capability. WTP already said it, but this is for emphasis.

Anyone tried playing Spec Ops: The Line with the GE60? What do you have your video settings at? I am guessing that the game is defaulting to the Onboard 4000 graphics. I can not go above 1366x768 with medium settings with frame rates being acceptable.

Crysis, Battlefield, COD, etc... All of those run at 1080, however, Spec Ops is either a huge resource hog or it is not switching over to the nVidia card.

    Anyone else tried it?

Ah, It seemed that it didn't downclock properly. Optimus ain't switching over to IGP. The strange thing for me is when I have MSI AB running, Optimus does what I want properly. When I close my MSI AB, it just stick to being on full-3D mode.

I played it and I had it in 1080 and if I remember it's either medium or maxed setting. Quite smooth and yes, the stupid Optimus didn't switched to GTX660M for me and I had to get it to work by using the Program Settings.

Count on it. I promised to make optimization guides for my old Asus G51vx and my current GX660R, but I never got around to them.

I'll be sure to make a optimization, modding, and support thread.

Ah, great, so that was indeed the problem.

The thing is I don't know how to go about fixing it. Everything I'm hearing is that the drivers are FUBAR.

Thinking about picking up the MSI GE60 0ND-042US from Xotic and paying for the IC Diamond paste upgrade. My experience with stock paste is that it normally sucks, though it sounds like MSI allows you to replace place and not void warranty?

Anyway, to people who have bought from Xotic or put the IC Diamond paste on the laptop, what are you temps compared to stock? (I've seen this question in here a few times but haven't seen a answer in the last 10 pages or so)

MSI uses MX-2 thermal compound in it's gaming notebooks that's a high quality paste.

Most factory applications of TC is not done with the best of care and they tend to apply too much.

IC Diamond is a high quality TC and very good when properly applied after the original paste has been thoroughly removed but a bit over hyped with magical cooling power.

As an addendum to what WTP said, it's more in the application than in the paste itself.

I'd much rather have crap stock paste that's well applied rather than some alleged über-paste that's slopped on.

    Hrm...

I see what everyone meant when this thing doesn't downclock. When tricked into downclocking by activating AfterBurner, the 660m idles in the mid 40s. However, when AfterBurner is not on, the core goes to 835.

This is gonna take a lot of work, folks.

As I've also mentioned a few pages back, running GPU-z will do the same thing. That is, "trick" the gpu into downclocking. For now, I just keep it running in the background when doing mundane tasks such as browsing the internet.

Hello all. Apologies, I tried using the search but it keeps throwing me a invalid search query error. I just want to ask about installing a SSD and my own Windows 7.

I bought the GE70 from here and I was wondering if anybody knows how easy it is to do a full clean install by replacing the HDD with an SSD. And if there's a noob guide out there somewhere? I installed a SSD into my friends MSI GT780 (it was RAID'ed originally) and that turned to be a bit of a pain with the BIOS. Don't want too much hassle with this one!

Should I clone the HDD onto the SSD first? Are the drivers easy to find? How much bloatware is on the laptop?

    Thanks!

That's strange... You have to have the nvidia gpu selected at the dropdown. Choosing IntelHD in the dropdown, reverts the nvidia gpu to 3d clocks.

Yeah, for me both GPU-Z and AB works. But decided to use AB since minimizing AB in OSD is more than enough to trick the GPU.

Also, anyone having success with extracting the 660m vBIOS?

I installed an SSD in my GE60 and it was pretty seamless. I burned the Windows 7 iso (link provided by a member somewhere on this thread) on to a USB. Plugged in the USB to my laptop and just did a fresh install. After that, I popped in the MSI recovery CD and installed the drivers.

Just wanted to add that MX-2 is one of the best TIM's on the market. I use it for all my desktop builds and it gives me lower temps than any of the 10+ TIM's I have tried. The only other TIM which even comes close is AS5 but it is probably best to not use it in a laptop.

The "Turbo" on the turbo button is just (allegedly) an indicator of whether or not you're using the GPU. The button itself is a hotkey, as you can see. Hit it and you can quick launch a program.

My 660m downclocks when running GPU-Z on AC. (From 835 to 405 MHz).
When running only HWiNFO64 or HWMonitor ( and not running GPU-Z), the 660m isn't listed.
How do I check the 660m clocks without turning on the 660m?
    Running the stock drivers (296.31); ambient temp is 88 F (31 C).

Some programs can't find the NVIDIA optimus GPU when it is turned off, so for those programs you need to run some other program to turn it on first.

Why do you need to check the clocks of the turned off GPU? :)

    Thanks lh6kean. :p

Muxless switchable graphics have never worked 100%. Common issue with Optimus. Enduro is worse, performance takes a hit when running dedicated GPU. Manual switching (via mux) is inconvenient and more expensive to manufacture, but better IMO.

I use this widget to monitor the GPU clocks. It can read the clocks of the 660m even when not being used. It's how I first noticed the clocks weren't going down unless I had GPUz running.

Thanks imanol. Is there a standalone version-I've uninstalled Windows Sidebar.

Are we sure that these free monitoring tools are accurately reporting the correct clocks at all times?

Remember that earlier versions of GPU-Z reported incorrect clocks.

Just checked-nVidia System Tools still doesn't support the 600-series. I installed it and it reports the incorrect clocks too.

You can always compare it to the clocks of GPUz. The only thing I noticed is that it reports the mem clocks as double of what it is. So, 1250 becomes 2499. I'm not sure why, but I've gotten used to it.

Well... got this puppy 2 days ago... playing Skyrim/Starcraft 2 right now... for 1200$ this thing is a beast... a little loud during gaming but... meh... nobody is perfect.

Now if Nvidia could release better drivers...

Also is it normal that the "Turbo" get stuck after playing minecraft?

Any way to force it back to the IGP without having to reboot?
