What do you mean exactly by throttling, meaning its stuck at 40 5 mhz

I mean that instead of staying on full 3D clocks it sometimes lowers the clocks to 2D / idle for some reason. Usually this is a sign of overheating, but could also be for other reasons.

Imagine your GPU idle clock is 405MHz, and let's say it's 900MHz for 3D clock. If during the game the clocks fall to 405MHz for some time and then go back up to 900MHz then you have a throttling problem.

Just keep your monitoring applications open during a gaming session, and after the first lag / slowness experience (let it go back to smooth gaming for a few seconds) alt tab and check your graphs / logs for throttling issues.

Ok, i had MSI AFterburner open during a session of cod4. When the random freezing occured it dropped from around 34% GPU usage to 0% and then back to normal. Temps were in the mid 50's and the clock stayed at 745 MHz.

    What would be causing this?

    Doesn't look like throttling then.

Is Windows' power plan set to "Maximum Performance"?

Try opening NVidia Control Panel also, and manually setting the game to use the NVidia card and set these:

Power management mode = Prefer maximum performance.

Multi-display acceleration = Single display mode

Tried what you suggested and its still happening.

I'm thinking of just doing a clean install, there might be some hidden bloatware thats causing issues. Which drivers offer the best performance with the least throttling?

As I said, I'm not the best expert on MSI laptops and their problems, although I think your problem is more likely related to NVidia drivers and not the specific MSI model.

I have a Sony Vaio SVS15 with a OCed 640M LE and, though I don't use it that much for gaming, I have the latest drivers (320.18 or something) and I don't recall having any hiccups. Then again, I have Windows 8 freshly installed so...

I suppose your stutter happens with all games and not with COD4 only.

Wish I had an MSI to help you better, but all I can give is general advice it seems.

Before making a clean install I'd advise you to backup your system partition, or at least make recovery discs. It might come in handy.

    No problem.

Oh, one last thing. Did you monitor your CPU frequency as well? If you didn't, try doing it (CPU-Z or other software from here should work). Those GPU usage drops may be related with CPU bottlenecks caused by frequency drops.

I hope someone with more actual MSI experience steps up with more insight than I have. If none of this works, the only thing I can think of is searching the internet for "nvidia gpu stutter", "gpu usage drop stutter" and stuff like that.

@chros, you can disable Turbo by Throttlestop - that's it.

    @James: Thanks, I'm so sad :(
Can we enable this change (CPU voltage) with custom bios? If no, why do they disable this????

By the way, you don't need throttlestop to do this just create a power profile to do this go to control panel/Power options/click on balanced and change plan settings/Change Advance power settings a little window will pop out expand processor power management and set maximum processor state to 99% hit apply and close the window now you can switch between power plans to enable-disable turbo.

Sorry to barge in but is there any thread for the 2013 MSI ge60 and ge70? I can't seem to find any. I am looking for some first hand information on these models before making a buying decision.

    Welcome to NBR!

There isn't a designated thread for those as of yet I don't think. They'll have different model designators (2OE) to show it's the new models as well as referencing 4th Gen Intel (Haswell) or the 765m GPU. If you had questions on the new models specifically, just ask them on the main forum and specify the model you're looking at. We'll be able to answer them for you, or feel free to contact me directly with your questions.

Hey guys, I'm looking for a laptop for college this fall and have stumbled upon the GE60 and GE70 with the new haswell processors.

I was wondering if there are any reviews out about the 2013 laptops and if you guys would recommend anything else for me to check out. I will be using it for school work, streaming videos, and some gaming. Max budget is 1500

    Hey guys,

Due to too much time, I now do free request wallpapers. Something like my MSI wallpaper I did earlier (browse a few posts back and you'll see). Give me a list of what colours, images, texts etc you want on it and I'll see what I can do.

Hi. I'm thinking of buying the new GE60 2OE (4th gen Intel) but I have a few questions (apply to both the new model and the 3rd gen one).
How are the temps (idle and gaming)?
How is the computer in overall?

Convince me to get this one over the Lenovo Y510P!

    Thanks.

Can someone tell me if installing an msata voids your warranty? Because im getting the new GE60 2OE when it comes available here and on all pictures of the back the laptop I see this sticker above one of the screws which I suppose is one of those "voids warranty when broken" stickers.

I emailed MSI support about this and they said it was OK to break the sticker and that wouldn't void your warranty unless you broke your computer doing something you had to break the sticker to do. I'd email them yourself just so you can get the confirmation in writing in case anything goes wrong.

Wow, lots of people wanting information on the new GE70s!!! Add me to the list! Guess I'll subscribe and see how it goes for folks. I was out in LA a few weeks ago and wanted to go to Genetech's office in Covina. Good thing I called them beforehand since I discovered they don't have a showroom! Anyway, really interested in the MSI line. I think a GE70 is going to meet my needs but I've also been trying to find out stuff on the GS70 that was demoed at Computex. Seems like that's either a concept right now or it's still a ways away. I'll probably want to purchase something in the next few months.

Help where do I find the Nvidia driver for the new Windows 8.1 developer preview that came out today.

Getting crashes in nvumdshim.dll with the old one

    Edit fixed with this cab:
    http://download.windowsupdate.com/m..._792ddff8b0c5a472bb5115fc9fdc1d97ba9d37c1.cab

i expanded it with 7zip extractor, device manager, update this device, browsed to the expanded folder and it all works.

Dunno why the 8.1 installer did give me it to begin with maybe i did something dumb

Quick question: I'll have my SSD arriving tomorrow and I'm thinking about upgrading to Win8 since I'll have to reinstall the OS anyway, however I'm running a modded BIOS, which is for the Win7 version of the laptop. If I install Win8, will that work with this BIOS or will I have to change to a Win8 one (BIOS is GE60_E16GAIMS.10F)?

Hey question to you guys who have owned the 2012 version of the GE60: What sort of fixes have you guys done for the ODD? I find the fact that it's so loose really annoying and I'm disappointed they didn't fix it in the 2013 version. Also, have you found a way to make the fan any quieter? The computer I've got is a little bit whiny. Also, do you have the flex in the keyboard too? Found any fixes for it (stuff something under there :p)?

About the keyboard. I put 3-4 little sheets of paper under the keyboard to remove that flex. Who uses ODD nowadays? I put HDD caddy instead.

Is the problem with the rickety ODD an issue with the actual drive MSI supplied with the computer or is it the hole cut into the side of the computer? If it's the drive, I would definitely consider getting a 2.5" one and a 2.5" SSD instead of an mSATA one, but I would like to fix the problem with it being so shakey and not fitting in the case.

That looks like a loose screw problem. If it is, you should look into it rather sooner than later.

    NO!!!!
You're forbidden to do this!!!! You can brick your laptop if you change the BIOS this way!

But you can flash the W8 EC version (if some hotkeys are not working, and flash back the W7 version if you want).

    So, in summarize:
    - BIOS change: no
    - EC change: yes

I don't know as I don't own a GE60, but there should be screws holding the top and bottom chassis together, and others holding the hinges to the chassis. If the hinges' forces are separating the chassis then you most likely have a problem in either (or both) screws I mentioned.

    Has anyone seen MSI's website for GE70-2OE / GE70-2OC ?

    Everywhere you look, "Specifications":

    CPU: The latest 4th generation Intel® Core™ i7 Processor

Right, because that's what I care about, that is has the "latest" new Intel iSomethingMeaningless. I guess MSI hired a new marketing team or has got their heads up their behinds. Makes me wanna think twice before buying their products again.

(I know this not the place to give MSI feedback, but just wanted to know what others thought of this)

Edit: I guess MSIMobile site at least says 4700MQ but interestingly, they chose to present Single Core Turbo speeds instead of the 2.4 GHz all core spec.

    MSI Ðоссия GE70 2OE
    MSI Ðоссия GE70 2OC

What you say is made in the worst traditions of Sony and company of thinking that people are dumb. It is like saying that GPU has 2256video memory while it means shared memory and it has only 1GB onboard vRAM.
Russian site show everything. Lets hope that global one will do the same soon and all is about completing full model list.

idk MSI is starting to get to me.

5 month old laptop and once a week gaming. Idle CPU temps already starting to be at 50C with constant fan running at medium speed. Above 95C during gaming. :(

My options will be to pay $20 to ship it to MSI repair center or fix it myself even though I have warranty.

    Hello,

I've contacted my local reseller recently about the warranty seal on the bottem, and he said it can be broken when you want to put extra RAM in, or chance graphics card (I know right?)

My question to you guys is, can I replace the GPU and CPU in this laptop? If yes, with what can I replace it? (would be a bummer to order stuff that doesnt fit, lmao)

    Oh, I'm talking about the GE70 0ND GTX 660m i7-3630QM etc.

I found some older posts form ppl who say that GE70 / 60 doesn't use MXM cards. GPU is soldered on to the Mobo. So I don't think you can upgrade GPU.

Yes, the only MSI machines to use MXM slots are the GT series and the direct barebones of those (along with their all in one PC).

Hey I only recently bought an MSI GE70 within the last week or so and I've updated the drivers and whatnot. I'm also using the nVidia GeForce xperience to determine what graphics settings I should have while playing games but for a game like TERA it seems to put it extremely low compared to what I've played on older computers and when I increase it there seems to be a huge drop in FPS. Sorry I'm not all that tech savvy but I know a little. Just seems like the computer can't handle graphics that I think it should and I want to know if I'm wrong or if there is a way to increase the gpus performance

Depends on what those other computers were equipped with.

It's not going to stand up well compared to a desktop with triple titans in SLI after all.

    Hey Guys,

great forum so far. I just got my new GE70 with i5 3230 and the GTX660M.

It comes in FreeDos mode and I am planing to install a SSD right away and put win8 pro on it. Any recommendations on which settings to play BF3 Multi.

I heard that the latest nvidia game ready drivers are supposed to be a blast so I will get those, but after that.... Reviews say it runs the game in High on native resolution just fine, but could I increase that with the afterburner app?

Is there a good balance between overclocking and additional heat on the GTX660M for BF3 or should I just leave it the way it is? I don't want the fans to go on while browsing or smt. like that.

    Many thanks in advance,
    Matt

@Eclipse2k4, at first why would you install Windows 8? Do you have free license which you need to use or you have already worked on it and you liked it? Because if neither of these then I suggest you to install Windows 7. Most of people believe it is way better and user friendly while all those performance tweaks in Win8 are either negligible or questionable (I won't use hybersleep for example).

Second. You play what you want on stock. If you decide that gaming power isn't enough while temperature is OK then overclock it with software. If you want more then flash unlocked BIOS.

    Hi,

I'm having trouble with the (I think) screen or graphics card of my MSI GE70 laptop. When I turn it on, I can hear windows starts normally, but the screen is white with some weird image.

Not sure what to to yet, but if the graphics card is defect, can I remove it and insert and install a new graphics card? (I read somewhere that the graphics card on this laptop is discrete. Is that right?)

It's not the graphics card. I connected an external screen, and it works, so I guess the problem is the screen is defect. Does anyone here know of a replacement screen I can buy that fits, and how I install it?

    Hey,

i have a free Win8 key lying around and I have to admit I love it. Been using it for i duno a year or something and in comparison with Vista or Win7 it's a blast. Everything was fast and logical. With the 8.1 Version the start button will be reintroduced so I guess then everybody is fine.

Do you have some numbers for the afterburner so I can check them out if I like them?

    Greetings
