Hi guys,
I have an MSI GE70-0ND. While I was carrying it in my case the handle broke down and it fell to the floor, resulting in the bases of the screws that attach the display to the case breaking down, and the display somewhat loose.
As of course that marked the end of my warranty, so I opened it and the damage seems to be in the lower case assembly frame (I think it is called that way in the official MSI dissasembly guide page 12, in other words, "the big plastic piece in the back around what everything is built" ). The display frame seems to be OK, but I need a new lower case in order to be able to secure the hinges back into the case.
Do any of you know the exact part name of this piece, and where to buy it, preferably in Europe?
Thanks!

Hi,
I spoke with support but don't have answer yet.
My backlight stop working after 30 minutes. Strange is that restart doesn't help but after night when I power it on, backlight works again but only for about 30 min.
Software shows indicator for different keyboard backlight modes I can change modes in software and switch power on and off on numpad. Software works normal but keyboard stays black.
I'm not sure but it looks like keyboard and screen goes black because inactivity but only screen wake up when I move mouse. Keyboard works but no backlight.
I'm not sure if it always same.
After restart keyboard stays black. Powering off for 15 minutes doesn't helps.
I bought it week ago without system with bios dated 16 or 14 April 2014, I didn't update it yet.
It's GE70 2PC.
I have installed windows 8.1 with all newest drivers and utilities from msi website. Without BIOS and battery firmware updates.
I'm not sure it's broken or it's some software related issue.
I think it have to be hardware if after restart keyboard doesn't have blacklight but it suddenly appears again after 8 hours of power off.
I'm very sorry for bad English
Do you have any ideas? Should I try windows 7 before RMA?
Is any way to test keyboard light in DOS or BIOS?
Appreciate for any tip. -

Do you see any part number printed on the part itself?
Try the BIOS and EC updates because they can matter in this situation, sometimes an issue requires an unique combination to happen. -
Hi.
I wanted to ask a Quick Question. Can i Change the GTX660m of my Laptop to a high performing one? like a 670m or a 680m maybe?
I have a GE70 0ND ..
-
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
You can't, the GPU is soldered on the motherboard. -
After come back home from 10 days long vacations I switched laptop on.
Keyboard was working like a charm for 10 minutes.
I have updated EC. Nothing
I have updated Bios. Nothing
I have instaled fresh win 7 64 and first thing I made was installing sse. Nothing
In all cases sse in tray has green border which mean keyboard is detected properly.
I hate that. I need to RMA new laptop.
Do you any tips how to avoid situation in which my laptop will come back from RMA with some scratches?
I'm going to remove both drives. I checked with msi that I can send it without drives. (SSD and default 1tb) -
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
1. Try EC reset by disconnecting both AC and battery for one minute, then reconnect them after.
2. You can send the system without drives, but if you encounter the same issues after receiving the notebook back then it's the software issue located on the system drive. -
I disconnected both for more than 10 seconds again and booted on battery only.
It works! I have restarted twice and waited for screen to auto switch off. Keyboard has blacklight all the time.
One hour more and I will do same test with charger.
Thank you. -
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
No problem, let us know if you have any questions. -
It works with charger too.
You really made my life easier
Kisses for you from my twins!Kevin@GenTechPC likes this. -
I still have problem.
If i use battery only keyboard works.
If I use notebook with charger it stops backlight after a while.
To make it works I have to switch it off and remove battery and charger for few seconds. It always helps. Just switching off or restart never helps.
I spoke with MSI and will send email with 3 questions before RMA
1 do they have similar issues reported?
2 do they know problem and I should wait for EC update
3 is it definitely hardware issue?
What do you think? -
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
1. Go to BIOS by pressing DEL key, go to System Information, post the version numbers of your BIOS and EC firmware.
2. This is not a known issue, but if they all worked initially perhaps this has something to do with software. Try removing and reinstalling the Keyboard LED manager.
3. If #2 doesn't resolve the issue, then backup your data and perform factory reset, but if problem persists then proceed with RMA service. -
I have reinstalled SteelSeries Engine many times.
I hate that I feel its some software issue and I will need to remove all data from drives to send it RMA.
They will say that keyboard is ok and that its my windows installation problem.. -
Sorry for double post but this is important.
Setting High Performance instead Balanced power profile makes keyboard working now for 2 hours! -
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
BIOS & EC are up-to-date, so the issue is software-related.
You can perform a factory reset if problem persists, see below for instructions.
Reset my PC -
I sent it via rma.
Yesterday i have installed win 7 and backlight stopped working after 3 and half hour.
Its different software.
I reseted EC many times because it was the fastest way to bring backlight back.
I removed charger and battery for 10 minutes and many times for one minute.
My drives were formated completely twice.
I will replay service answer but imo It cant be software because I did make everything correctly five times. -

I see, then let MSI Spain handles it, and hopefully it will be taken care of properly. -
I'm from Poland.
Thx for your tips and time I will replay what msi will say. -
MSI replaced keyboard.
-
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
Great, so the issue is resolved? -
I hope so.
I got information by phone. They will return laptop in next 2 days. -
Now I'm waiting for decision about replacing my laptop with new one.
After RMA and keyboard replacement backlight still stop working in random situations. Everyday in heavy load during game or when idle on windows desktop.
I'm on win 7 64 so it's not win 8.1 thread anymore.
I don't want to send it for mainboard replacement it's 3 weeks old and I alerted MSI support about this issue when laptop has 2 days.
I wait for their decision about replacing with new one without drives, I want to avoid installing system and data again. -
Hey there,
I decided to make an account to give someone a heads up if their fan starts doing that crazy buzzing sound, because I just fixed mine without drilling a hole through the middle or taking the fan apart (if that's possible).
Anyway, yesterday the fan evolved from the slight purr it started to have, to the sudden and scary loud buzzing. I had fixed this problem before on other laptop fans, but they were easily disassembled and oil could be applied directly on the shaft no problem.
Not the case with the Ge70. I separated the halves by bending the metal "fingers" with pliers, but couldn't get the shaft out of the bearing, and didn't have a drill on hand as the Russians suggested so I looked up other solutions, such as oil seeping, which is only possible if the cap isn't glued on. Well this is what worked for me.
I removed the stickers, and cleaned out the groove of all the adhesive around the black cap at the center of the fan with a needle, and applied a drop of sewing machine oil at the center, making sure the oil had contact with the groove. Came back 10 minutes later and applied another drop, making sure the oil that wasn't on the black dot or groove got cleaned up with a tissue.
I came back 20 minutes later and the oil was not to be seen, so this is what must have happened, the oil seeped through the groove and into the bearing/shaft center.
Spun the fan around manually to get the oil mixed up, put the other half of the case back on, plugged it in, ran the turbo mode, and no buzzing occurred even after shaking around the fan (which usually started the loud buzzing).
TL;DR Don't drill, just apply the finest oil you can find on the black cap at the center (after removing the stickers) after cleaning the groove, and wait until it's gone. Repeat a couple times and your fan should be back to normal. Mine doesn't purr anymore, and no more buzzing even if I suddenly tilt or swing my laptop. Good as new.
Hope this saves you some cash and time. -
All,
I have a 15-16 month old MSI GE70-20E laptop (out of warranty) that is beginning to exhibit strange behavior with the power (on/off) button. I lost the back-lighting on the keyboard a long time ago and just didn't really care much about that since everything else is good, but this power button issue could result in a brick someday soon. Since purchase I have added a pair of SSDs and upgraded the radio to an AC compatible one, no work has been done (opening the case even) in many months, maybe 10.
If the unit is off I have a very hard time starting it. I press the button and the light turns on (amber) and the system begins powering up but then shuts off before hitting the BIOS. After that happens I cannot get any response from the power button and I have to either remove the battery or the AC source and try again. Sometimes this process can take 30 or more tries before it comes on. So I have been leaving it running.
I can close the lid and the machine sleeps, when I open the lid it comes alive, as long as it did not hibernate (which I have disabled) so this is a workable short-term solution. Reboots are also fine since it is never in a fully powered off state.
The bit about removing the power makes me wonder if it is actually the switch that is going bad, other than that it seems like the internal connectors for the power button may be loose. It acts almost like I'm holding the button down too long causing a start up and in 5 seconds (or less) shut down.
Any ideas? Can I buy a new switch and install it myself (I have the mechanical skill, just wondering if it is even possible to buy parts like that), where would I go to find one? Maybe it is a bad solder join on the power cable or something like that. -

Looks like the touch board might be going out, but it could be main board too.
You can check with MSI on this, but most likely they will want you to send the system in for service because of the possibilities. -
Thanks for that info! I'd rather try to do the repair myself than to pay both shipping and repairs and be out of commission for weeks. This "touch board" unit....is that what contains the switch itself? I've been considering getting a new keyboard since my LEDs are out.

Hello forum
My keyboard past away and I had to get a new one
I could not get a ge 70 blue backlit Nordic so I get a
gt70 full coulered keyboard it is working like a ge70
but the backlit are white
are there any chance for flashing it to an apache? -
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
There's a different EC firmware that allows you to change color on the LEDs, but you have to ask around to see if someone can provide it. -
Thank you
hope someone had a ec update for my keyboard
I use the latest bios and ec on msi website
my ge 70 is an 2oe -
Hej forum
What if I us the GE70 2QD apache bios and ec
the are 1759 where mine is 1757? -

You stand a good chance of bricking the machine by doing that, while they are the same generation CPU there are differences in the GPU which could cause it to become a paper weight.

Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
There were PCB changes, spec changes so it's best to stick around with similar stuff or newer. -
Thank you for your time
I think I will keep my white backlit -
Hello All,
Can someone please tell me some good msata ssd drives to install in my MSI GE70 2OE?
I'm looking at this one right now but can't find much info online in regards to compatibility:
Crucial MX200 250GB mSATA Internal Solid State Drive - CT250MX200SSD3

Thanks for your time.... sorry if I'm posting this is the wrong place.

Do you see a SSD slot in your unit? The accepted SSD interface is mSATA.
However, the length for the MX200 might be half in length so it may be too short to become secured due to the mounting holes are located farther away. -
ok, thanks for your help Kevin. I just ordered a Samsung 850 EVO 250 GB mSATA 2-Inch SSD (MZ-M5E250BW) which I believe is compatible with my system. On sale at Amazon now for $99.
thx again for taking the time to reply. -
Hello guys. Does anyone know where can i find the lower case of the computer. Just the removable part though. The one that has "void if tampered" sign on its corner.
-
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
That's called a "D panel", try contacting your local MSI office if you can, then search on eBay since sometimes people are parting out from defective systems. -
Msi service charged 50 dollars and plus some tax so i am not buying it from then. It is disgusting to ask 50 dollars for some plastic. And sadly nothing comes up when i google msi ge70 2oe D panel

Yup, it is a bit high since they are probably the only one that sells it.
Other manufacturers such as Alien, and ASUS cost similarly, perhaps the main reason is that they are the only source of supply and limited supply, see below.
