Two sets would suffice. If you have extra, try throwing them on the CPU side. It will probably be a very tight fit on the CPU side and you may need to sand it down a bit.

    Happy New Year 2011! :)

    Happy new year everyone.

The CPU would be a little different wouldn't it? Considering the top of that plate is plastic

It looks to be cast iron on my whitebook. You might want to check that again.

    Hey guys,

Maybe it has been posted already but do you know what the new vbios brings in term of perf improvement? Is it worth flashing it?

    Thanks in advance

No performance improvement whatsoever. The only difference I see via RBE is populating the Frequency/Voltage table. The only other change is bumping the Core Voltage to 1.05 from 1.00V.

    How do I enable overdrive?

EDIT: I'm an idiot. That key didn't look like a button at all.

So...here's a question. Is the audio output on this thing supposed to be so dang quiet? Even with speakers or headphones plugged in? I have it cranked to max within applications and through Realtek/Windows and its barely tolerable.

I am trying to watch a movie right now on Netflix and even though the Netflix player is at full (so is the System Volume can't turn it louder with the function keys either) its occasionally too quiet. I tried uninstalling the Realtek drivers, and the sound was the same so I reinstalled the latest which also didn't change anything. Is there some hidden setting I am missing in this new world of Windows 7? The little green bar that indicates output on the volume information never even gets past the first third of the bar with everything at max.

Of course I tried messing with Speaker Properties and all the SRS/Power Management "features" are off and the levels set at max.

earbuds on max make me ill ..quick..super loud....make sure u using green port for headphones ,one of the ports is line out the other mic. line maybe ok (blue?) but green should be loudest for headphones assuming they wired the realtek ports correctly

new bios does not give higher performance out the box necessarily, but it does help in alot of small ways, maybe big ways depending which version u upgrading from....i had the old default shipped with 1656 with super spartan clock table

as noted the clock table is now populated for alot entries instead of previously 2 on my 1656. previous it all ran at 1v either at 625/1k or 100/1k . new clocks include 100/150 at .9v for idle states and some middle of ground clocks as well. with top speed bump to core 1.05v
new microcode is versioned up on the bios so could be some under the covers stuff we can't see or mod updated as well
10.12 drivers work well and support the clock ranges with power play
this vbios fixed my soundcard/headphone noise issue (had intermittent zinging sound)
fixed my wake from sleep issue where it would hard lock
battery life seems improved a tad
allows higher overclock for core by 50-100mhz for me

It's quite loud for me too. Just make sure you connect all wires correctly (especially if using 5.1/7.1 setup)

    Hi all,
    I put i7-720qm into my GX640 today ;)
(actually I want to sell this and get sandy..)

I surprised about it's high temp on idle(60C)
At the first it was 72C - a nightmare.
    I re-filled MX-3 carefully again and get idle 60C now still too high(ambient 28C)

And I can feel that it's much slower than i5-430m for normal jobs..(I overclocked my 430m @2.8Ghz)
    Of course it's 1.6Ghz so that's reasonable.
Now I'm going to OC, but I'm still curious about it.
My question is, can I OC all 4 cores to constant 2.8Ghz ?

I know 720qm has locked multiplier and turbo-boost only works on non-4 cores are working. So that means we cant OC like that. right?
But I remember a user in this thread said that he OCed to constant 2.8G.
    I can't find that reply ....

I used SetFSBTray to OC fsb to 143 and it's easy.
and I can use ThrottleStop to increase multiplier by 1(from 12 to 13)
But I wanna constant all-same clock..

    please give me any advice.

Alright, after messing around with my GX640 for 5 months, I finally found the secret to low temps: a good laptop cooler and the removal of the back panel. Now my GPU idles at 43C and tops out at 73C, and my CPU idles at 45C and tops out at 75C.
    but...
now comes the problem of overclocking. I OCed my GPU to 700mhz and now the edge of my screen flashes everytime my background changes. this is a pretty stable clock imo, what am I doing wrong. my voltage is 1.05V btw

May I ask you how you OC'ed your 430M to 2.8 GHz? Did you test it out with benchmarks to see if it was actually better performance?

In my GX740 I can OC my 430 to 3GHz and it's stable but I've tested Mafia 2, Far Cry 2, BC2 and they all give worse performance with OC even at 2.7GHz.

Only game that seems to give better performance is need for speed hot pursuit.

    by using SetFSBTray and ThrottleStop.
For 430m, you can increase multiplier to 19 in ThrottleStop.
I used 150Mhz fsb and 19x multiplier. It was very stable.

In gaming, of course it gives better performance but in case of some games such as Mafia II, you will feel that the Vito runs faster(time goes faster).

I also OCed to 3.2Ghz using 166 fsb but it was not stable because I didn't tweaked any voltage. I unlocked the TDP in ThrottleStop but I assume that the memory timing was the problem. when I use 166 fsb, memory speed increases up to 667Mhz which is just fit to my 1333Mhz ram. But default ram timing is 7-7-7 so this could be a problem since 9-9-9 is default for 667Mhz.
You can use CPU Tweaker to tweak ram timing but I found that I can't change CAS-to-RAS timing. It was fixed to 7.

Is SetFSBTray the same as SetFSB? If not, where can I get SetFSBTray?

And how do you get the multiplier to x19 in Throttlestop? It's set at x18 and can't get any higher. Also, how did you change the TDP in throttlestop? I went to the options and changed the TDP value to like 1000 but I don't really think it does anything.

SetFSBTray uses SetFSB actually. you can download. try google.
and x19 multiplier is a weird result but when u set x18 u get x19 if your cpu is 430m.

I never used EIST and C-state for 430m.
So I didn't used turbo boost.
I just OCed BCLK and fixed multipler.

I'm not sure about your question and now I don't have 430m,
but you can check it by yourself easily.

Do prime95 or other program to burst all cores and check the speed.

I fixed the multiplier issue by increasing the TDP.

But the performance issues are still there... BC2 for example runs worse even though everything is stable and there's no throttling.

i run my 5850 @ 750/1000 on 1.00v have not been an issue yet. also idle clocks have been lowered to 50/85 on 0,85v that seems stable to. have done this for almost a month now, so i think i'm good

here is a simple guide you guys should see

GX640 automatic downclocking/undervolting using CCC profiles

also, do you guys find your screen horrible? try adjusting the colors in CCC to gamma: 0,65. brightness: 12. and contrast: 130. seems better to me at least

Guys, please use AMD GPUClockTool for overclocking. It gives much more consistent results. Sometimes, with CCC, clocks get stuck at an intermediate value and it really messes up your experience. Unplugging AC power sometimes locks clocks to 400/1000. So be aware of that.

The problem is I don't know how people are able to take of the bottom panel of their laptops. I have two warranty stickers over mine.

    1. Set Voltage to 1.05V
    2. Set Clocks to 800/1000 (Core/Memory). Type in the numbers.
That is it! Very easy to use.

    You can remove those stickers.
Cannot upgrade ram/hd/clean the cooling system? -without voiding warranty?
If you ever need to take it in for RMA, just tell them you were going to upgrade your RAM or something which you have the right to do.

don't worry about those stickers, you can take them off. MSI stated in their warranty policy that professional paste change will not void your warranty. and inorder to do that you will need to remove your back panel.

I just had my motherboard replaced due to some problems with charging, and now I realise that the audio isn't working. Is there any way to check if it's a hardware issue, i.e the replaced motherboard's audio is faulty or something?

Right now my playback devices only show a Realtek HDMI Output which is not plugged in :\

Thanks in advance for any help!

    Hey, peeps.

I just received my GX640 the other day, and frankly.. I'm a little dissapointed. I just finished updating the bios and vbios earlier, and that helped a bit, but.. When I play Crysis (example), I can't even open a load. It just freezes the whole laptop, and I have to shut it down by holding the pwbutton.

The temps of the GPU and CPU don't exceed the 80-90 (I already drilled holes in the backpanel and such), so that's not the problem. I'm not at home right now, but when checking HWMonitor, the first unit it monitors (can't remember what its name is), gets pretty hot too. About 70-80oC from about 50oC.

Is it meant to do that?
If yes, then what could the problem be? :)

EDIT: I also get BSoDs a lot, especially when having a lot running at once.

Did you reset the EC by pulling out the battery pack? MSI suggest that you do this every time you flash the System BIOS. Also, when you flash the VBIOS, you may have to reinstall the GPU drivers.

    The memory dump says:

STOP: 0x00000021 (parameter parameter parameter 0x07E27136)

I haven't really been able to figure out what this one is.. Could it be the RAM even though a memory test doesn't show any errors?
