radeon bios editor, then flash with atiwinflash, works fine. undervolting is good for the idle and lower clocks but for the high performance clocks you want to overvolt otherwise you just get artifacts.

temps after gaming (straight after) 72*c

also purchase some more heat sinks, gonna see what I can do with them.

moved up from 850/1000 to 860/1050, played some bc2 and all seemed good, temps still good, no artifacts.

    reached 860/1100.

lowered back to 850/[email protected], some games had weird stuttering.

why would you want to try that card? it's slower than the stock card and has DDR3 memory.

in that case I think the 260m will work, but I don't know if there will be bios issues?

BIOS will be fine with a 260m, you can just flash to the GT640 BIOS

Upgraded from an i3/i5 ES 330M/430M to an i5 580M(QS) that was purchaced on ebay for $150. No problems so far. I'm waiting for Uncle Webb to confirm that I did not get scammed. Full load Turbo multi shows up as 23.xx which may or may not be a 580M (I think the turbo multi is 24). But otherwise, everything seems fine in the short span I've had it.

Yes, the HD4870 should work if the connectors are the same. Any of those cards should work.

The only cards that really don't fit are *correction* cards that run too hot, or cards that physically don't fit with the heatsink like the gtx 460m.

Be sure to watch your temps, look through this thread and learn how to modify your fan control.

4870 should be good, 6970m will be too hot.

6970 might work if you undervolted and underclocked it, but at that point the 5870 would offer lot better value.

I think the 6870m gddr5 would be a good match for this laptop.

Its still a lot better than the 5870 and only 75w TDP.

There is nothing that doesn't function with this laptop as far as BIOS support. This laptop will support ES cards, and really anything you throw at it.
    Clevo laptops will not FYI.

Its not too difficult to modify the heatsink for Nvidia 400m and 500m cards. The problem is, you can't just cut the copper, because if you bend this heatsink it wont be able to cool the vRAM at all.

I thought I had a working 470m which the gx640 was not compatible with, but the 470m was broken. So I will make a correction here in bold.
Nvidia gtx 460m, 470m, 560m, 570m, etc will work on the MSI gx640 if you file down part of the heatsink and modify fan control.

Also, don't forget the new and old quadro cards, fx 2800m, fx 3800m, Quadro 3000m, 4000m, etc. (only the newer ones will require heatsink modification)

Could You elaborate on this? AFAIK the only difference between the two is HDMI 1.3 vs HDMI 1.4 and 6870M runs at a lower default GPU clock, so it is, in fact, slower...

    Hi guys,

I'm having some weird problems playing call of juarez: the cartel and dead island. In both games I don't have any text displayed in the menus, although I can navigate through it by clicking where the text should be or using the keyboard. When starting a game, I cant look around with the mouse anymore, however clicking is still possible. Since this problem is occuring on both games (which dont have the same developer btw), I'm wondering if my hardware is causing these problems. Has anyone experienced a similar problem or has anyone some tips for me? My other games (like Mirrors Edge, BFBC2) are working normally.

i just realized that both dead island and COJ: the cartel are using chrome engine 5. Since both games have the same bugs for me, this might be interesting. Any hints/opinions about that? Thanks in advance!

Panta, sounds more like a driver issue than anything else. Have you tried different drivers?

Also, is your vBIOS updated? There have been multiple updates released.

I'm using 11.8 ATI drivers and have tried 11.7, same issues. My vBIOS version is BR35701.030 on stock clocks. I'm running on the latest DirectX and visual runtimes drivers. Did I forget anything?

edit: I've updated my vBIOS to BR35701.031, my BIOS is E1656IMS.10E which I think is the latest version.

    Hey guys,

I have had a couple of problems concerning my hard drive (I finally replaced it with a hybrid seagate). I installed windows, and flashed both my vbios and bios (and EC firmware).
The problem is that I seem to have the same problems as I used to have before flashing my vbios for the first time (like one year ago) : 1) my computer freezes when I plug in the electric cable while my computer is opened; 2) my computer freezes when it goes into hybernation.

My BIOS version is E1656IMS.10E, but I don't remember how to obtain my vBIOS version... Is it with CPU-Z? Ok WOW: I just tried to copy the "video computer version" and my computer restarted... : the code is 012.020.000.039.035701.

Maybe all these bugs have something related with the fact that my eco-engine doesn't work (I'm downloading MSI control manager).

EDIT : oh, and yeah, I forgot to say that my non-wifi internet connection doesn't work...

Hey, guys. My lappy is really under preforming, sometimes getting 0 fps in Starcraft 2 (on low)for instance. It's also incredibly hot, about 77 degrees when I boot, and it'll often get to 99 degrees! Also, MSI afterburner (as well as Techpowerup GPU-z) reports the GPU usage to be at 0%, with a few spikes. I've never seen it go over 16%. I'd like to say that I replaced the thermal paste a week ago.

    Here are some screenies.

Maybe it has something to do with directX?

You need to repaste your cooling system. There are lots of guides everywhere.

    Hi Guys,
I was just thinking about getting an upgrade on CPU for my gx640.
I currently have an i5 450M, and I see that some of you guys already upgrading to i7 820QM/840QM, how much improvement do they have when gaming?
I also saw a few i7 920XM/940XM on ebay, how would those do in the gx640 in your opinions? Thanks

Hi guys. I'm sorry if the answer is here and I've missed it, but there are a lot of pages of info to go through. I have a MSI GX640-260US. Everything I've found said that its optical drive is a Super Multi DVD Drive. I'm not clear as to whether or not that means it can write dual layer DVDs. Does anyone know? I didn't upgrade the optical drive, that is whatever is standard on this system.

    Thanks.

right now the idle temperature of my lappie seems to be aorund 67-70 degrees celcius and when I on minecraft it heads up to 85-90 degrees and when I let it continue, after 10 minutes it would hit around 100+ degrees and then automatically shut down. Has anyone encountered this heat problem before?? The fan seems to be blowing alot. thanks! :D

it sounds like you need a repaste of the gpu. You should also try opening up you laptop and cleaning out the vents.

Also, what type surface is your laptop on when you get these temperatures?

hello guys, I have a problem with my gx640. The problem is whenever I start or on my laptop it does not show any display at all. though the buttons like power button, wifi, and "moon" is lit.

I know this problem had been asked about a lot in the other threads or forums but different solutions have been proposed that is why it just led me to confusion especially I am not that great with technical stuff(bios, vbios, underclock, etc.) in computers. So can anyone please help me with this problem and guide me through different steps. A reply will be very appreciated. Thanks in Advance!

    Cheers

P.S. I have recently installed kasperky anti-virus 2011 when this problem seem to have occured frequently which i just ignored (though it also happened about 4-6 times in the past 8 months). Now it seems my laptop won't even start and I've been trying to make it start for the whole day.

update: i have removed the battery and the power supply and waited for about 1 hour then I connected the power supply again fortunately my laptop started.

I'm using this ty ceraminque compound I got from radioshack. I'm pretty sure I did it correctly, is it that hard?

Edit: Like Ayle, I have dropped my laptop. It was long enough ago that I cant remember if my overheating problems started when I dropped it, but could the cooling system have been damaged by the fall?

That's a bit trickier because of the different types of thermal paste need to be applied differently. The more popular and effective pastes are MX-4 and ICD7. Take a look at their respective product pages and look at application tutorials. As for disassembly itself for the GX640, you can hunt down a youtube video from frostycomputers where they upgrade the CPU in a GX640, the guy in the video is a bit reckless but it'll at least give you an idea of what to do.

    Yes

    MSI heatpipes are gravity driven.

    Kind of sucks

I experienced this first on the gx630, and I even found that tilting it to one side made the temps drop for a second, and then get higher.
