I think my post back on page 348 is as close as you're going to get to what should get applied where. On how to open it as mentioned before search on youtube for the MSI GX640 CPU upgrade video by frostycomputers.

Is it possible that my fan speed is too low? It seems to be hottest directly under the fan.

It might be a driver problem. I have used my same drivers that came with the laptop for the past 1 or 2 years and I just recently wanted to play Rage and it didn't work. So I installed catalyst driver 11.9 and my computer wont start anymore coming out from sleep. When I push the button to wake it, everything seems to turn on, my mouse led flashes but then shuts of and the screen wont come on. The only way I can start my computer is when I do a shut down each time. I might have to revert back to my old drivers, because that's going to be a pain.

Does anyone know where I can download the new bios for this computer? I've tried the msi website but they don't have one that's for 64bit. I tried the one they had but it wasn't compatible.

Ok never mind, I spoke too soon. I fixed this problem by updating my bios and vbios. Then I updated to catalyst 11.10 and got rid of 11.9 (mainly for Rage and BF3) and everything works so smoothly. It's like night and day with the new bios's, the computer wakes up from sleep the second I push the on button. Before the update it took a few seconds. I don't know why they would even release such a crappy bios just to make an update a month later. So anyone having this problem with their computer not waking up from hibernate and sleep, just update vbios.

I don't know the version I used but I just went to the msi site and got them there. MSI Global ? Notebook - GX640. I just clicked on the downloads tab and got the bios and vbios there. Well my computer was running great before I updated to a newer Ati catalyst driver. After that my computer wouldn't start sometimes and all I got was a black screen and I would have to use the computer in safe mode. Also it wouldn't wake up from sleep and hibernate and playing rage was awful. So basically the new bios's fixed these problems for me and my computer went back to normal. The only difference I did see that was better from the update is the computer wakes instantly from sleep. Before, it took 3 or so seconds for windows to come back up. But if your computer is already working fine I couldn't tell you what differences you'd see.

Can anyone comment, given propper cooling solution would it be possible for
MSI gx640 to run amd 6970?
In other words, is there anything else that you will need to do if you want to swap graphics card? Say updating BIOS, or make modifications other than cooling system.
Would MXM 3B from MSI supply enough power.?

You'll need a bigger power supply for sure, at least 180W

And you might need to make modifications to your heatsink depending on how good the contact is

So my gx640 was stolen out of my house last week. Along with all my other belongings... I am such a sad panda. Hopefully Insurance gives me a decent replacement cost still waiting for them to get back to me. Any recommendations? The 780 is looking smexy.

performance loss is given by the decline of the VGA clock, usually by reducing heating or power failure. Your source can not provide energy or even your graphics card is dying. My HD5850m died so

    Download and test :

    how do i use that?
ive tried rolling back drivers too also dont work
and i dont understand how unable to provide energy or graphic card dying still give me full performance for the first 3 mins everytime i start the game

Did anyone's bluetooth stop working suddenly? Mine wasn't detected by some bluetooth stack software, and now it doesn't work at all.

Then again, I probably screwed it up when I did the repaste with mx-4 (idlin
at 54 celcius! without ramsinks nor holes!)

    But I don't see HOW.

    Any ideas?

Wow, someone tried to help you and you are being a **** about it.

Many times the same symptom can have several possible causes.

Artifacts/crashing during a game can be easily caused by:

    1) Failing graphics card.
    2) Driver issues.
    3) Poor heatsink contact.
    4) Overclocking too far.
    5) Poor power supply.

The power supply is one of the most over looked issues out there and to suggest it was not silly.

When you had shutdown issues we could say zzzzzzzz you never thought to check your temperatures?

btw, when did i ever mention anything about artifacts, crashing and shutdown issues? bet u didnt read properly at all before saying me trying to be a ****

Hi, I have MSI GT640 and planning to upgrade GPU. Wondering, would the stock heat sink could do the job, because now GTS250M goes max to 72 degrees. Can somebody list supported (tested) nvidia cards?

After opening and taking out to clean heatsink temperature a little bit rised up for cpu so what cooling coumpound would you reccomend?

    Thanks for answers! :)

    hi to everyone
i am not from USA so pardon my English
so i have a problem when i am using amd overdrive can only chose 625/MHz when i do that it stays at 625/1000. but if i want to change it and make it something like 500/1000 or ... it automatically goes to 100/150 and it look crazy because when i try to move around something or scroll on a webpage or on office word i get flickering. i don't know what to do because when i put it on 625/1000 it gets hot and also the battery doesn't last too long. now i know it says "clock settings are applied only when the gpu is running in high-performance mode" but i also don't want it to be so low that i cant even scroll on a page
and maybe the biggest problem is when it is on i cant even watch a movie because it stays at 100/150 and the screen stars flickering like it turned crazy
so please help me i really like this laptop but i don't know what to do

I'm having a problem with my current wifi, it seems to make me lag on heavy load (such as during gaming.)

I've got a new wifi card the ultimate n 6300 agn, and when installed i get the "device doesn't start code 10" issue. 'searched around and I'm not sure if it's a fake or not or that it's a different issue.
I found a thread where another dude installed one in his gx640 and it runs.
    other thread here

I just can't seem to send PM's for some reason...
anyways wondering what people have come up with and if there is any fixes
    Bios wise or driver wise.

    for the curious,
    I have the msi gx640-260us
    i5-450m
    8 gigs of ram
    5850 1gb ddr5

How did you get that card to work with the heatsink in the gx640? I noticed that the gpu die is rotated slightly so it won't fit in the slot on the heatsink. Let us know if it works when you game.

And that's the difference between enthusiasts and regular users. Why not strap rocket engines to your car to make it go faster if you think it is too slow :D .

On another note .What was the tutorial to overclock the get rid of stuttering with the overclocked i5?
