Just in case anyone is still interested in changing their fan speed I created another tool for the purpose. This tool is designed to toggle between two fan profiles when you press the P1 button on the GX640's touch panel. I created it so I could just press P1 when I went into a game to set the fan to Max, and press it again when I was done to return the fan to normal; however it could be used to set the fan between default and quiet mode or whatever you like.

Still having a DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL issue with my laptop. The other blue screen stopped after reinstalling avast, but this has suck around. Any ideas what I cash do?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using Tapatalk -
Well you could try reinstalling Windows but that's a hassle so it's probably best to leave it as a last resort; although in the long run it may be easier than trying to find the exact cause...
Other things you could possibly try are reinstalling your graphics drivers/updating to the latest (12.1 I think).
I'm not that experienced in troubleshooting BSOD's but you could also try looking at this tool:
Blue screen of death (STOP error) information in dump files.
which may be able to tell you which driver is causing the crash, if you want post a screenshot or something =) -
Thank you very much! I searched exactly for something like that
But i have one problem with windows. When pressing P1 the Win7 UAC ask for permission because rw.exe will change system settings. I don't want to disable UAC. Do you know a workaround?? -
-
I have UAC turned off personally since it annoys the hell out of me, however I just looked into workarounds and I found this: How to Create Shortcuts For Trusted Programs To Bypass Windows 7 UAC Check | VikiTech.com
To test it I temporarily turned UAC back on and it seems to work, just direct System Control Manager to the short-cut that you make.
I personally named my Task "ToggleFan" which made the short-cut path:
C:\Windows\System32\schtasks.exe /run /tn ToggleFan"
Hope it works out for you.
Well according to Google it seems to be blaming your network drivers, so you could try updating your network drivers via Realtek and Intel's websites (Although Realtek's website is really confusing to navigate).
Another option is to run "sfc /scannow" from command prompt to check if there is any corruption in system files.
I have no idea if these options will work however backing up all my files annoys the hell out of me so the above options are worth a try! -
I'll give those a shot when I get home today. Thanks for the help

hey, does anyone by chance know where i can get a spare back panel?
I want to drill some holes in it for intake, and see if that helps with temps
edit: does it void warranty if I drill on my current back panel? -
Only place I know of which sells back covers is RKComputers, and I assume drilling out your current back panel would void your warranty.

im from singapore and drilling back panel did not void my warranty. for mine doesnt help with the idle temps but gaming temps did drop afew degrees

Big problem with my laptop today. I tried to start it and all I got was a tiny blue light on the power button and the hard drive light. They both disappeared in less than a second, and nothing happened. I checked power connections and checked the Memory, both seem to be fine. I have no idea what else it could be but the mother board... Any insight?

Your GX640 seems to like tormenting you...anyway a while ago my GX640 had a problem where it would turn on however nothing appeared on screen yet it would still turn on in the background and that turned out to be a GPU problem. While troubleshooting that problem I ran into the issue you're having now. I can't remember exactly what caused it but I believe it happened when I had the CPU out or the memory improperly seated.
You can try your memory in different configurations to see if it helps or try and borrow a friends memory I guess. Worst case it could be your motherboard and if that's the case good luck with your RMA! -
My machine is out if warranty. I tried reseating the memory a couple times and couldn't get it to work. I haven't tried new sticks though. I'll have to borrow my girl friends. And yes it hates me.

Quick update, figured out that it's the motherboard. Called tech support and it's still under warranty. Do now I just need to ship it to them and wait a few Weeks

Hello, all. I made an account here to ask a question about my GX640's performance in 3D games. It seems to be really terrible. I try to run all my games in native resolution with low settings, but even then it seems to run much more poorly than it should. For example:
Tribes: Ascend = 15-25 FPS @ 1680x1050, Low Graphic settings
Skyrim = 10-25 FPS @ 1680x105, Low Settings
Battlefield 3 = 20-30 @ 1440x900, Low Settings
Resolutions don't always seem to make that much of a difference. The 5850 idles about 60c, maybe 80c when pushed.
I've got the latest drivers for the 5850 (stock speed) from ATI, have 6GB of RAM, and the i5 is at stock speed (2.40 GHz).
Am I just expecting too much from my 5850? I feel like running semi-intensive 3D games at native resolution with all LOW graphic settings should be something the gx640 should be able to handle.
Any tips? Thanks! -
NotEnoughMinerals Notebook Deity
I'm not sure about Tribes, but your poor performance in in Skyrim and Battlefield may be because of your CPU. Skyrim and Battlefield are both super intensive on CPU.
-
I don't think its because of the i5 that he's getting bad fps, I think it's another issue, op try uninstalling the ati drivers then run drive sweeper in safe mode and then back in windows install the ati drives again. See if this helps
-
Mod BEst of HD 6990M ..
85º play battlefield 3 max temp..
I removed the lid down and sunk a cooler of 120 cm
-
I went ahead and did this. No improvement, but it was probably good to clear out old stuff since I hadn't done it in a while
I went ahead and ordered a cheap cooling mat to at least keep the temperatures in check
-
op maybe your 5850 is down clocking use gpu-z to have a look to see if ur temps are to high and it's down clocking?
@elisons that's very nice, I've been waiting for an update of your mod
do you have the bottom cover on or off?
-
Funny you should mention this! I was just about to check in and say that my computer shut itself down twice today due to overheating. It's never done that before now.
GPU-Z showed temperatures ranging 95-105 while gaming, and 65-85 while web-browsing. I didn't leave it on long enough for it to shut itself down again, or to see it downclock. Should I look into replacing thermal paste? Thanks! -
First thing I think you should do is to clean the fan and vent for dust and see if that helps, if not then yes you should re-paste
-
Anyone know how I can find out how much this laptop is worth used? I bought mine back in summer '10 and am going to buy a desktop soon + Macbook Air this summer.
My 640 is an i5-450, 5850.
Thanks!
Edit: Sorry, just remembered about the marketplace price check forum. -
btw, if changing thermal paste doesnt help much and if ur under warranty go and ask them to change the heatsink.
It happened to me too. After they changed the heatsink im getting very good temps =) -
While repasting, You could also remove thermal pads from GDDR and substitute them with thermal paste. In my case, it has lowered my temps by 10-15C (although I have a GX740).
-
Thanks for the input, everyone. I re-pasted and cleaned my fan. Slightly better temps. I think the problem might be in the card going from 405-650 during the game sometimes. I was going to use CCC to lock it as 650 but now CCC won't work after I've uninstalled and reinstalled it a few times (and drive sweeping). I may just ask for a new heatsink when I won't be needing the laptop for a while.
-
hi to everyone
i have a streange problem
i cannot update my ati driver
i think it has something to do with CCC
i have installed windows 7 new and installed the driver from cd it was ok.
then i tried to update the driver but it said that the driver is wrong or something... i tried uninstall and install, install the driver from the msi homepage and then update.
no sucess...
i still have the old driver :S -
Quick update on my RMA.
Sent it in on Tuesday the 21st, and it arrived at the manufacturers on Thursday the 23rd. the claimed it as arrived this past Monday and has been "processing" all week. Hoping they finish up and get it back to me by the end of next week as I am out of town the week of the 12th... so far everything seems to be going ok. -
Try uninstalling all ATI driver software from Control Panel and then restart. Then download and install this if you have 64 bit Windows:
ATI Catalyst? Mobility Display Driver
or this if you have 32 bit windows:
ATI Catalyst? Mobility Display Driver -
So i got my laptop back today, first thing I notice is a MASSIVE increase in idle temps from when i sent it out. they replaced the graphics card, but now HWMonitor is reporting GPU temps at 71 degrees on idle. I know there should be an increase from reapplying thermal paste, but should it be this high?
-
NotEnoughMinerals Notebook Deity
It shouldn't. I think they might not have fully cleaned off the old stuff, and then applied too much of the new stuff which gave a finished result of bad.
You should probably look to repasting it yourself and perhaps replacing the thermal pads. -
I was hoping that wasn't the case. oh well... time to redo paste then.
-
Well, its going back to Msi... I don't want to risked voiding the year of warranty I have left. So its gone for another two Weeks...

Has anyone tried the 560m in the GX640? The lousy amd linux drivers are getting on my nerves.
-
Finally have my laptop back for good, and they did a lot more stuff to it. Replaced the MoBo and the keyboard. I didn't notice anything wrong with the keyboard when I sent it in, but maybe they broke it. Everything seems mostly normal, temperatures are still a bit high, but I'll pass it off as paste setting for now.
EDIT: temperatures are still screwed up. It kept jumping from 72 to 79 and back while watching a netflix. Furmark brought it to over a hundred in a matter of seconds. Fairly angry with MSI right now... -
dude, just ask them to change the heatsink.
i had this problem too so the first time i went they kinda lazy to do anything so they just repaste yea temperatures dropped alittle but after afew days same thing so i went back. After they changed the heatsink its been like 2-3months now and my gaming temps still never go above 80degress C and idle at around 50 without cooling pad.
Its the heatsink fault! -
Its actually my fault. I did a clean install of windows, dropping temps back to normal. Not exactly sure what happened, but whatever it was seems to be fixed.

You mean it was software related?
Wow. -
apparently. I don't understand it either...

Having finally decided to remove my back cover when gaming, I now have some room left for overclocking. An hour of BF3 results in 84°C max on the GPU at 700/1000mhz. What are your experiences with higher than stock 5870 rates?
My system: msi640gx, i7-840qm, 8gb ram, hd5850@700/1000. -
Sorry guys I dont know if this has been covered earlier but I was wondering if anyone knows if a i7 820qm is compatible with the gx640. I just want to confirm this before I go ahead and purchase it.
-
NotEnoughMinerals Notebook Deity
Yes it is, when I owned a GX640 I had an 820qm in it and it ran just fine. -
Thanks for the reply. Would you say it was worth the upgrade from an i5? I know it will be very useful for my stress analysis simulations, but for gaming I was wondering if I would see a decent performance boost.
-
NotEnoughMinerals Notebook Deity
In terms of simulations is should help a lot. In term's of gaming, it'll help in CPU intensive games so it depends what you play.
It was worth the upgrade for me. -
Awesome. Thanks for the help. I found a QS 840qm thats pretty cheap so I will go for that one.

niffcreature ex computer dyke
The 460m works fine but the heatsink does not fit it. A great alternative is the Quadro 3000m or 4000m with the different board layout similar to a 480m, 580m etc. -
Does the modded bios unlock any features for overclocking? What can it do? I posted a request to svet but he hasn't replied
.
-
You can't directly overclock the CPU by changing the BCLK frequency in the modded BIOS however there are some things you can tweak.
I forced my RAM to downclock to 800 Mhz from 1333 Mhz which allowed me to do a higher and more stable overclock using SetFSB and Throttlestop in Windows.
Other options you have is to enabled AAM (or something like that) on your HDD which allows it to operate slightly more quietly in theory although I haven't noticed a difference. You also have the option to enable/disable hyperthreading and enable/disable Virtualization support. If you have an extreme CPU extra overclocking options are unlocked however I haven't tested them as I do not have an extreme edition CPU.
Those are the main things which seemed useful to tweak. -
Got it today, It's pretty nice. And what cpu/overclock are you running for that much of a ram downclock?
-
With the Original 4GB RAM that came with the notebook I could set the BCLK to around 170 and have it be perfectly stable. However, after I upgraded my RAM to 8GB I can only set the BCLK to around 160 (translates to around 3.0Ghz) or else it crashes.
