haha... thats a good one. but in singapore the price are way to expansive to be an enthusiast. btw how to overclock the processor? messing around with setfsb gives me blue screen all the time
-
I've just realized that my i7-840qm only shows up with 4 cores in the taskmanager and throttlestop. the device-manager shows 8 cores though. has anyone got an idea how to fix this?
edit: found out that the msconfig-restriction is not that profitable after all.. back to 8 cores

I've tried everything .. was to change vga which worked ... burned the board, I saw how burned ....

You probably went to high to quickly. Mine will go up to about 3GHz before BSOD'ing.

i get bsod when reaching 2.73ghz

Hey guys, I've been reading this thread but I can't seem to find an answer to my question.
I have a GX640 with an i5 2.4 GHz, and an ATI 5850m. So far I've been able to play most games at pretty decent settings without any slowdowns or stutter, this includes running Crysis, BF:BC2 on high-medium settings. However I recently bought GTA 4 and its expansion packs but for some odd reason, the computer can't handle the games, no matter what settings I put them on. I tried to overclock the GPU to 725/1050 but the game still has slow downs.
I used the benchmark within the game and with everything on high setting and anisotropic 2x, I was only managing an average of 20 FPS.
What can I do to up the performance? thanks -
Buy a 940xm. GTA is very cpu demand.
-
I did some modding on my laptop MSI GX640 here are the results!
From stock clocks on the 5850 625/1000 i went to 800/1050 and my temperature in game at stock was 80 degrees at max, with my new OC and after the fan modding my new max ingame temp is 65 degrees
My 3dmark Vantage has gone from 8000 to 9520 as well
Anyway is there a way to OC the Core I7 Q740 CPU? -
What kind of?
-
Mounted 2 80mm fans to the back of my laptop and removing the back case so that GPU and CPU is in open air, i also added new thermal paste to CPU and GPU
Now it runs stable 780/1100 for long time gaming hits maximum 65 degrres but mostly stays at 62 when gaming
If i take it up to 800/1100 it crashes in ARMA 2 after a few min. -
Oh, I thought it is something more radical than take the bottom panel off.
-
你好,兄弟.请问你的5850M显存可以降频吗?2D频率和3D频率不一致时会闪烁吗?我的就是闪烁。另外不知道兄弟你是否能找到1656BIOS解锁的BIOS,可以有更多的高级选项?
Hello, brother. Ask your 5850M memory can reduce frequency? 2D frequency and the frequency of 3D inconsistency will blink? I was flashing. Also don't know brother if you can find the 1656BIOS unlock BIOS, can have the more advanced options? -
New 3dmark Vantage record
5850 GDDR5 800/1100
stock I7 Q740
8GB 1333 ram
3DMark Score9642 3DMarks
Graphics Score9254
CPU Score11027
Temp never hit above 70 degrees -
Hey guys, my GX640 died this morning. I think the GPU died because artifacts appeared and then the screen went black. Burnt smell came from the PC and it shut off. When turning it on again it keeps a black screen. I've owned the laptop for 1 year and 4 months. It comes with a 3 year limited warranty. Does anyone have experience with MSI's warranty? I have done some work on the laptop, but only changing thermal paste and removing some of the plastic covers on the back panel. Is my warranty void?
Thanks ahead
Leyth -
I think you should be OK,
give MSI or the dealer a call as nothing you did is the cause of the problem -
WOW u too, all the msi gx640 gpu's are dieying, lol, even mine lasted 1 year and 6 months.
btw, other then the black screen, does it also show white screen sometimes and sometimes colour flashing. -
Did u guys overclock?
-
I haven't let it stay on longer than necessary because it seems like there is a electric issue somewhere. The laptop shocks you sometimes when you touch it.
Did you get yours RMA'ed? -
lol u can say i underclocked, not overclocked.
on idle it was clocked 300/400.
while playing i made a special profile for games, heavy games had 500/650 clocks while less heavy games like fifa 11/12 had 400/500.
i only played max of 20 hours with the top heavy games as crysis 2, bf3 since buying.
though i played fifa 11/12 almost daily but no more then 1hr per day.
my idle temp was 50-55'c.
my heavy game temp was 70-80'c.
my less heavy(fifa) game temp was 60-70'c.
i didnt have any termal paste though. -
no,my warranty is void.
-
Use grounded plug!!
-
wow i run it at 800/1100, and have no problems. My temp always stays under 70C under heavy gaming and idles on 45-50
-
Well i've had this laptop for 2 years now running stock clocks, stock thermal paste and gaming almost every day 8 hours a day. I have yet to experience any gpu problems*knock on wood*, but I must say I am happy with this laptop and think it's one of the better made ones out there. I should also say if I use this computer on any soft surfaces i've alway's used a cooling pad.
-
Hello everybody !!!
I have a little question, I think some of you know more than me about this...
I am planning to buy some thermal pads (not paste) for the CPU and GPU, but I don't know which I should buy.
So do you know how thick they should be and how much thermal conductibility should they have ? (I saw an expensive one with 12W/m.k but the average is 6W/m.k)
Thank you for you answers ! -
Worst idea so far...
-
Thermal paste is good, but i have to put some every 2-3 months.
Now my GPU is almost @ 60c° in Idle, so it was better even with the bad msi pads.
Maybe with good pads it will even be better than paste
(I doubt about that, but we never know
)

Hey guys, quick question regarding a BT issue I'm having:
I have a moto H555 headset, and and nnow there's nothing wrong with it. It connects both to my Droid 3 and also my PS3 and works fine.
It will connect and pair to my GX640, but only the earpiece audio seems to work. The mic doesn't. It does show up under recording devices as BT Audio but the mic isn't picking up any sound. After removing it, repairing, it, ect sometimes it will randomly produce static through the input. Disabling and enabling will then cause it to not work at all again.
I've tried removing all the BT drivers and reinstalling them from MSI's site, but it didn't do anything. Tried searching the thread and forum but turned up nothing but general issues. My MS mouse, phone and even Kenwood car CD deck all can pair to the laptop no problem.
Anyone have any idea? You think it's the BT stack in the laptop, A windows issue, or just something weird between the H555 and the laptop? I'd just pick up a new headset, but don't want to waste money if it's the laptop that's actually the problem. -
Here's the weird thing, removed all the MSI drivers and went with the windows generic ones. Now here's the issue.
Windows will find it, ask for the code and pair it. Both the ear piece and mic work, but the mic gives off huge distortion and static. You need to manually set it to about 5 / 100 volume in the input settings for it to work properly.
If you turn off the H555, then turn it back on while the BT radio remains on it will not work at all. You'll need to turn off the headset, remove the device in windows, then re-pair and make the adjustments above to work.
If you hit the BT radio hotkey/light off, then turn off the headset, then turn the headset on, then hit the BT hotkey on, it will work... but it appears the volume normalizes to the new 5/100 level and is back to static/distortion.
If you set the volume to 100/100 before every time you turn it off in the steps above, and go in and reset it to 5/100 every time you reconnect it every time, it works.... (oh so helpful)
So yeah, something is serious wrong. Seem more like the BT in the laptop than the headset though, right? Because the headset works flawlessly with anything else I can pair it with.
Is the crappy Motorola stack in the laptop the problem? Or is this a windows 7 64 issue? -
Hey guys, I think I ed up badly. Hopefully its the best case scenario.
I was changing my paste for the 2nd time. I thougjt that perhaps my bluetooth issue (seems like on this computer, its a no go) and noticed a small cable was under the bracket for the cpu/gpu fan. I tried moving it but no go. So I pull it harder and yank it. Tried to find the plug but its nowhere to be found. So I think perhaps the cable serves no purpose...
Close it up and press the power button.led lights up and then off. So it probably is the cable. Its the one with a plug by the cpu, which goes around a card and apparently has the other end by the hdd bay. It goes under that piece of plastic. Help please.

How do i overvolt this laptop?
-
After i overvolted to 1.1 i now run stable clocks on 900/1100 on my 5850
Vantage score is 10250 -
So i've been having some BSODS. I've had 4 in the past 2 days, 3 of which are an dRIVER IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL, And this always happen on login. Then I got one SYSTEM SERVICE EXCEPTION while closing out of a game. any idea what this could be? I did some searching on google and got mixed results.
-
Are you overclocking any of your components, particularly the CPU? When I overclocked my CPU too far it became unstable and I began getting those BSOD's. Otherwise have you updated any drivers recently or installed any new programs that launch on startup?
How are your temps under load? When I tried overvolting that far all I got for my troubles was crashing from overheating... Also are you using Overdrive in AMD CCC to overvolt, or another method such as modifying your VBIOS?
Does the laptop POST and can you get into the BIOS? Or does nothing come up on the screen at all? -
My temps stays between 70-75 on GPU while gaming at 900/1100 It depends on room temp and the game. I overvolted in Ati Tray Tools and also did my overclocking there. Made like 5 different profiles with different voltings and clocks depending on my task.
For keeping the temp down i use GC Extreme thermal paste, which is the best you can get. I also use a laptop cooler with 2 fans on it. -
Nice temps, might have to look into getting a cooler and repasting again...GPU regularly gets to 90 for me at the moment.
-
Should have mentioned this stuff above, sorry. No overclocking at all, no driver installs within the past couple weeks, and the only programs I've installed are Origin and one game, which I have specifically set to not launch on startup.
-
Well I doubt your memory has suddenly gone bad but just in case you might want to try running memtest86+ to see if it finds anything.
Another thing you could try is to attempt a system restore to before the BSOD's started happening. -
how did u OC ur cpu?
-
SetFSB works wonders =)
Here's a link to a tutorial I wrote a while ago: http://forum.notebookreview.com/msi/473766-official-msi-gx640-owners-thread-339.html#post7733541
I also recently got a modded bios from Svet on the MSI forums, it adds options to the bios which allowed me to downclock my memory which let me overclock slightly further.
Well, good news is that system restore made the bsod go away, bad news is that everything else is gone too.I log in and all I see is black screen and mouse...
-
Try starting in safe mode (Spam F8 when your computer is starting up and select Safe Mode)
-
I remembered that I did install a new update to my antivirus software. Safe mode start up worked, any advice in you're to proceed?
EDIT: Reverting back to before the update brought back the usage of my computer. I am going to uninstall and reinstall avast. -
Nice nice, hope it works out for you. If it breaks again you might want to try temporarily switching to an alternative such as MSE.
-
I just realized how convoluted that last post was. That's what I get for posting from a phone.
Seems to be running fine, and yes, if this had not worked the MSE was my next option.
