well i was playing battlefield and i got a temp spike of 103 C  . ive stopped playing any games until i get the arctic silver on Wednesday in the mail. anyone have any guides for applying the thermal paste. also i shouldn't have to do anything with the thermal pads correct?

i don't recommend arctic silver. Highly conductive stuff... don't want them floating around in my lappy.

thermal pads?.. I dunno what you are referring to by them, but if you mean the stock stuff that is pasted on the heatsinks now, yes. You have to get rid of them to apply your new thermal paste.

I suggest using arcticlean, which I bought to clean my stuff up before applying MX3.

Good luck to ur temps and gaming life!

If your using AS5 the install instructions can be found here:

    http://www.arcticsilver.com/instructions.htm

Use the AS5 ONLY on the CPU & GPU, DO NOT use the the AS5 in place of the thicker thermal pads. The compound will not fill the thicker air gap that the thermal pads will.

I got rid of all my pads and use mx-3 to fill in the gaps. Works great ;)

i still don't get what you refer to as the thermal pads....

do you mean the copper heatsinks?

or the stuff the company used before shipping as your thermal material?

If it is the first, it's gonna be fine because MX-3, when applied correctly, will fill up small dents and scratches. :D

If it is the latter, the arcticlean will just remove the thermal pads anyways, so no worries to that either.

    Ah.

    That's the thermal pad.

Nah, you don't have to fill those gaps in.

    Yep working now ;)

Don't worry about the scratches , the blue one aren't that important.
You can use thermal paste where the rectangular pads are if they are dirty or damaged.

Replace the melted one with paste as well and ur good to go.

    it's the northbridge.

Are you using it without paste ?

you mean the one with damaged one? if so at the moment there is not paste on it. so take the damaged pad off and put paste instead or put the paste on top of the damaged one?

also does anyone know what the component is within the star?

Take the damaged pads off , clean it up and apply the paste. Always apply to the components on the mobo , then put the heatsink on.

That thing is called the northbridge (memory controller).

What version is the HDMI on the 1651? I can't seem to set resolution above 1920x1200. Is it because it is 1.0~1.2a?

Are the new MSI NBs coming out with HDMI 1.3 or 1.4?

    No problem.

You can use arcticlean for cleaning the residues of the thermal compounds, regardless of what you will use as the replacement thermal compound.

Good luck! MX-3 dropped about 4-5'c on my lappy.

Well the procedure itself is simple, and pretty clear cut.

Use articlean 1 to liquidify the thermal stuff that is on there already.

Wipe it off, then use articlean 2 to polish the surfaces and remove the miniscule residue on the heatsinks.

After wiping articlean 2 off, apply MX-3 to the cores( I suggest a dot method, as the heatsink pushed on and screwed on will squish the dots to fit your gaps between the heatsink and the CPU.

You can also use rubbing alcohol (the higher the alcohol volume the better) as an alternative, more accessible way to clean off your thermal compound residue.

That will leave airpockets in the compound. Your better off with a single bead and then install the heatsink.

Any experience setting up the built in camera using webcamXP ( webcamXP - Webcam and Network Camera Surveillance Software) with this laptop? I got my spouse's Wind set up properly, but on the 1651 I'm having trouble. It somehow gives a message that the camera is in use or unavailable even if its not.
