Take one of your RAM pieces out and boot. If it doesn't, swap pieces of memory and boot. If it still doesn't test both pieces of memory in the other slot.

If you cannot isolate either one piece of memory or one memory slot that is making it hang...call your technical support.

What exactly are you talking about?
What happened to your laptop? a little more info. would be helpful.
All I have to say is that my MSI 1651 ID2 has run fairly cool and strong.
Temps do climb when using Turbo mode, but nothing to worry about.

So anyone try undervolting yet? I read over the undervolting guide and it doesn't seem that annoying to attempt. Then again BSODing my shiny new laptop is something I'd like to avoid...

If you have a processor without half-multipliers it's easy and completely safe. If you have half-multipliers it gets more complicated, but is still safe.

Ok thanks, when I have some time I'll tinker around with it. If any GT628/barebones owners attempt this please report back for the settings you used.

Someone did an unboxing although I'm not sure where they posted the pics. If you follow the swapping guide you should be able to reverse Fn and Ctrl.

I was talking about in-BIOS ability for swapping as MSI GT628, not like removing keys, changing places, using OS hosted software or something. And about the review of the unboxing model - I was looking for it but with out success, anyway will make one more round to find it.

Anyone get one with a QX9300?( any QUAD?)
Was wondering what the CPU and GPU temps would be.

I wonder whether the 160M would be a temporary stop for the 1651 before the 40nm yields from Nvidia makes its way into the market by September.

Try the CPU-Z program or this web site: http://processorfinder.intel.com/Default.aspx to get detailed processor information.

I have one with half-multipliers, the P8700 and i set it up and all... then windows 7 and crystal cpuid (I couldn't get cpu-z to work reliably because it doesn't detect half multipliers) decided to make it more difficult than it needs to be, plus when i'm on battery i use turbo-battery mode, which cuts the processor speed (and uses the lowest multiplier, hence no savings by undervolting)....

long story short i tried it, somewhat succeeded, then realized it wouldn't make much of a difference since my rig cools incredibly well (max 80c on full mode turbo, "too hot" is in the 90s, "on fire" is 105c according to intel) so i abandoned it

So far the 160M GTS handles every new game I have got easily.
Just got WOLFENSTEIN( just came out today :D ) and STREET FIGHTER 4 both run beautifully with max settings (NO OCing).
Very impressed with this card so no need to wait.

    That's great!
When it comes in you have to give us some benchmarks(3DMARK06 would be great for comparison) and some temps for the Q9200 and GPU when gaming.
That would help to see how well it handles temps and if it's worth upgrading to a QUAD down the road but so far my T9900 is incredible.
When are you getting your system?

yeah after I turned my battery settings from battery saver to performance play I really saw how good the laptop was. can max cod4, run crysis on high, fallout3 on high, max farcry2, all with no lag. it is really nice. haven't done turbo button yet but i'm sure it would be good to do for even more performance.

    Yes it does! :D
But so far no game I have tried really needed it.
I am tempted to slap CRYSIS in it and see how it handles it with and without TURBO mode.
    BUT....I really don't like the game :p

Its easy, flip the laptop over and you will see the big cover and then a small comer, take the small cover off and then you will see the hard drive bracket unscrew that and slide the hard drive out, its very easy to do..

Depends on what you mean by "any type" of DDR3. It will have to be a SODIMM, not a DIMM (that is for desktops), but virtually any BRAND will work.

Yes, you can put a 2GB piece in your empty slot even though you have 1GB in the other one.

thanks. what about the processor? I searched ebay and there's these ES or QS processors that seem cheap I'm just wondering if theyll work with this laptop otherwise I'll probably get a 2.8Ghz dual core or a Q9000 depending on my budget.

They are Enginering Samples and yes they will work in the 1651 ID2 as long as its the refresh 1651 ID2. I had one in my GT725 and now its in my AW and works just fine..

I discovered there is a higher cpu load and latency for deferred procedure calls (DPCs) when dolby digital live is enabled via the Realtek sound manager from this laptop. With dolby digital live enabled, the DPCs alone consistently have a CPU % load between 7-10% and DPC latency checker shows a higher latency (by a factor of 10x on average). This so far occurs for both versions 2.09 (from the MSI DVD) and 2.29 of the Realtek HD audio driver for me on WinXP SP3. I'll just have to settle for remembering to disable dolby digital live when I'm not driving my HDTV with my laptop (esp. when the laptop is using the battery only).

I'm wondering if anybody else is having this problem?

ES stands for Engineering Sample. These ES processors are given out to OEMs for testing and it is illegal to sell them to the public, although many do.

The problems with them are they have often been tested to death, or near death, and you don't know which early version they are, they do not have all of the features of the final release versions, and they have NO Intel warranty.

You are better off spending a little extra to get commercially released, genuine Intel processors that carry the Intel warranty.

    What keyboard flex? ;)
This is my first MSI laptop and it is well built.
The only keyboard flex I have noticed is only when you really mash the keys, and if you type as hard as I was pressing you have some anger issues.

Can you possibly run a 3DMARK06 test with HWmonitor to see what temps you get?Turbo Mode and with no Turbo Mode used.
That would be greatly appreciated to see the comparison between my T9900 Dual core and to compare whether a upgrade to a QUAD core cpu is worth it.
Looking forward to the results :D

Just noticed i posted my last message in the wrong owner's lounge... so I figure I'll try here!

Has anyone been able to successfully overclock this laptop with setFSB? If so, what OS are you running and what PLL/Clock Generator did you use? I haven't been able to figure out the correct one, although there are a couple that just hang the system.

Thanks to all that can help!

I do not think anyone had found the correct PLL (correct me if I am wrong) for this model. The best solution may be to give up your FN & Ctrl swap firmware and use the 1.0S firmware. With that you will retain the option to change the overclock to either 15% or 20%. The 20% overclock option will bring the CPU to it's stability limit and I have seen 20% even crash with some CPU's (Pretty sure this is why it was removed as an option in later firmware). This will be much more stable than using setFSB.

You were not in the wrong lounge, the other thread is all about the MS-1651 ID2.

Ok, so i've been messing with mine since yesterday.

    My CPU is a q9200

    my temps are great.

after running 3dmark06 here are my hwmon results
(this is with turbo mode on)

    core 0 max 89
    core 1 max 86
    core 2 max 85
    core 3 max 87

    GPU max 87

    HDD max 39

now that may not seem all that amazing, but its pretty warm here, ambient temperature is about 95 degrees Fahrenheit, or 35 Celsius, so the temps are still pretty good.

it also may be important to keep in mind that i've only had this baby together for a day and a half, so my as5 has yet to cure

The thing that worries me is my 3dmark06 score

without the turbo mode on, my cpu score is in line with the other benchmarks i've seen.

The xotic PC benchmarks with a qx9300 scores around 3582 in the cpu category without turbo mode, I scored 3490 at stock speeds.
This difference is exactly what i would expect, no problem here.

Its the GPU scores that alarm me.
most every GPU score that i have seen averages around 4700 for the SM2 score and around 4500 for the SM3/HDR score, with a few exceptions higher or lower.

My scores are quite a bit lower, scoring 3965 in the SM2 category, and a mere 3490 in the SM3 category.

I'd say even a difference of about 300 from the average would be acceptable, but my scores are almost 1000 in each category.

    I'm using the 186.03 drivers.

does anybody have any idea why i'm scoring lower than i should be?
Sure i'm still scoring right around 10000 3dmark even without turbo mode, but my scores don't seem to line up, and I'd like to know what is going on.

    Thanks for the help

Actually I was able to get the best of both worlds! I ended up hex comparing the GT627 EC and the Fn and Ctrl modded one, and it turned out the turbo button was already enabled for the Fn and Ctrl swap modded one! Just an FYI to anyone else in the same situation.

Flashed 1.0S and the 20% overclock seems to be stable on my p9700 (not so sure about the temps at load though - 75C-ish).

Thanks for pushing me to try harder to figure it out :p

What resolution are you running the 3DMark06tests in? I believe those scored posted at xoticpc are done under 1280x800.
