One test I would love to see is a MSI GT72 vs ASUS G750 in cooling and fan noise, I bet it's pretty close now.

Perhaps, but I still give the edge overall to the GT72. You are not trying to goad me into a comparison, are you? I think the differences are obvious, so do your own comparisons, Dang you! :D

I am sure a G750 video review will be available soon.

As i know, the G750 is more heavy but less usb port and audio output jack than GT72. The speakers of Gt72 absolutely crush the G750. I'll choose Gt72.

I already had to do a GT70 vs. GT72 comparison list, and now I sense you guys are tempting me to do a GT72 vs. G750 list. NO, DANG IT! Quit teasing..... not gonna do it..... nope, not gonna do it..... NOPE! LOL! :D

(Oh GAWD, the Alienhead 17 has just entered into the mix.....)

I guess Asus wins this one hands down. Stealth Fighter inspired is a lot less retarded than dragons and aliens.

Edit: Just re-read the original post.

Althouogh Nvidia GPU can perform power-saving mode in battery, but Optimus helps to save lots of electricity usage.

Dang It! I was hoping this G750 chatter would go away, but I guess not, and now I feel compelled to do another list. See what you folks have made me do. :D

    MSI GT72 Pros:

    1. Presently $100 less.
    2. More jacks & ports, ergo more options, and 6 USB 3.0.
    3. The redesigned Steelseries keyboard, with brighter, color customizable backlighting.
    4. The i7-4710HQ
    5. An MXM standard nVidia GeForce GTX 880M with 8GB GDDR5. Asus is using proprietary non-MXM standard graphics.
    6. A x4 M.2 SSD RAID set, potentially offering twice the primary storage capacity.
    7. Killer DoubleShot Pro, combining Killer Gaming E2200 Gigabit Ethernet and Killer Wireless-AC N1525. Both can be used simultaneously for increased bandwidth.
    8. Dedicated GPU switching between IGP and NVidia GPU, ending problematic Optimus switching.
    9. A 1080p webcam
    10. A 2-year North American warranty, 1 year Global warranty, and 1 year Accidental Damage Protection.
    11. The awesome Dynaudio speaker system.

    Did I miss anything?

    Enjoy!

    :)

Do the gaming mouse and mouse pad come in the same box as the laptop? Or is it a promotional giveaway?

I assume a promo..... I didn't receive this, but I see the resellers are now offering this. Also, if you look at the thread's lead post, the 'MSI Downloads' section, I just posted a 'Gaming Mouse Driver' link.

Anyhow, I really don't care about the mouse, because I use the Steelseries Sensei Wireless Laser Mouse.

    But seriously.
Has anyone ever upgraded their GPU?
What did you do with your old card and did you utilize your new card to its max potential without getting bottle necked by the CPU/Old architecture ?

Even the lowliest i7 will be fine and not bottleneck any GPU these days, most people either hang on to there old GPU in case anything goes wrong and you have to send it in for warranty or the just sell it.

This. I used to change GPUs several gens ago, when I couldn't afford the powerful GPUs. Same for CPUs. So usually I upgraded one (GPU or CPU) then the other, to maximize performance. In some cases, the CPU alone was the bottleneck though. But these core i7, even first gen, still give great performance :D

Nowadays I just save enough to buy the big bad :D

A lot of folks have swapped GPU's, some successfully, some unsuccessfully, but most do not want a proprietary, non-MXM graphics card. Rather you plan to swap or not, it's always nice to have options...... or at least the belief you have options. At this point, I ascribe to the ryzeki philosophy, LOL!

hi -=$tR|k3r=-. I noticed that the one thing that you would ding this model on is perhaps the display. I am contemplating buying the newest lower based model GT72.. which is the 47 i believe. Would it be worth it to upgrade the display to a glossy 90% color gamut? Would that help the issue or is the matte screen not worth that much of a gripe over?

    Thanks for the time!

    HA !!!
That's what I wanted to be spilled out. Us humans just like having options even if we wont choose them some where down the road.
I'll try waiting, but I wont wait for NVIDIA, they might come up with another excuse blaming the manufacturers.
If things get out of hand I might just go with the G750.
May God give me the patience to bear with this :p

One of my notebooks has the 90% color gamut upgrade, and it's a very vivid screen, BUT...... the matte screen I had beforehand was great too, and with all the added gloss reflections, I actually regretted spending the extra money. The original matte screen was the Chi Mei Optoelectronics (CMO) | ID: CMO1720 | Model: N173HGE-L11, which is very nice, but make sure you get the revision that MSI is using. Any of the resellers should be able to assist you with this. I would however, suggest you try the GT72 screen (CMN1735) first..... overall it's not bad, and you may be able to live with the viewing angles.

    :)

I can`t find any benefits with the Asus G750 over GT72. Zero.
However I can find several with GT72 over G750.

    - Standard MXM modules. You can upgrade the GPU later down the line without replacing the whole notebook. Asus use these weird MXM modules that nobody sells which put an end to upgrades.
    - MUCH easier to clean inside of the chassis, and to get to parts like SSDs and RAM. G750 is horrible with this.
    - MUX switching. Turn the graphic card on and of with a button. Always works. If it doesnt its your own fault
    - Steelseries keyboard. Semi mechanical for awesome feedback
    - Dedicated amplifier for each speaker including headphone jack. Superior speakers (Dynaudio).

    GT70 Dominator-1866 (Dragon Edition) - $1449

    GT70 Dominator-895 - $1399

Both with i7-48xxMQ processors! Otherwise, it looks like you have a wait, because for the money, I am not seeing any better in a G750 either.

I guess as we get more busy, it's easier to just save up rather than messing with upgrades hahahah :D

Personally, I work with whatever comes with the laptop. The reason why, is that I tend to use external monitors when I do serious work or gaming. So even if the display is just OK, I am fine with that :D Nowadays, most laptops come with decent displays, but 4-5 years ago, even the powerful notebooks often came with awful displays! It was a bit of a pain.

Advice: Buy the better screen only if you think you will get annoyed/ or if you don't plan on using an external display.

Asus G750 is a great laptop, but I personally would wait, or save money a month or two more, to get all the extra benefits you get with GT72 :D

Patience! Tho to be honest, I imagine anything you buy right now is gonna be a huge upgrade to what you have?

I owned the GT70-0NC at one point.. honestly i thought the screen was perfectly fine. I imagine this screen will be at least equal to that or better. I ignorantly don't remember what type it was but i did love that laptop and never had any gripes about the display quality.

True. I have a 4 year old laptop. I planned to get a new gaming laptop this year, first the NVIDIA guys made me wait about 4-6 months, then I had made up my mind to get the 895 until the GT72 showed up out of nowhere. This was not such a good year for upgrading the arsenal :p

You may want to consider increasing your budget a bit. While you are waiting for a lesser priced SKU, what if the next-gen tech is released in the GT72...... More waiting? Just a thought.......

    :)

The screen you most likely had was the CMO1720, and yes, this was a great screen in MSI models, however, the current screen in the GT72 is the CMN1735..... which is not bad, but falls a little short regarding viewing angles...... but again, you may be fine with this screen.

Quite the contrary! You are at the verge of the best moment to upgrade. New design, new gpus on the horizon with actual architectural upgrade! If you bought older laptops right now, you would be using year old tech or older, and you would see both price drops and big performance increases in a couple of months. Maybe even get some remorse down the road :p

Guys you have any idea how the GS70 is?
I mean from personal or close experience. In the forums people whine about the high temps; which is a given in such low form factor laptops but still, any idea how long such laptops could last? actually I'm not that intense gamer and would just enjoy playing new games even if it means compromising a little on the settings, doesn't have to be ultra all the time (but mostly).
I really would love to have an ultra portable gaming laptop which could also be used as my work/entertainment center.
Would love to know from Xotic or Gentech guys the max temps with IC Diamond repaste they achieved.

GS70 is a great alternative if you don't want something too big or optical drive.

The temps are around 89C on GPU with stock thermal paste and 85C with IC Diamond.

By 'pick temp', I assume you mean ideal temp. This can vary according to ambient room temps, from notebook to notebook, according to how configured, and different games and benchmarks will stress components at varying intervals...... and as such, I look at both 'peak' and 'average' temps. Generally speaking, high-load or peak temps below 82c is considered good, beyond this things are getting a bit too toasty, and above 88c things are getting uncomfortably hot. Ideally, we want to know the fan and cooling solution can adequately manage temps, and that it can do so without excessive fan noise. As equipped, the GT72 is a powerhouse of high-watt components, making it an engineering challenge for temperature and noise management. All things considered, the GT72 meets this challenge, and if you read HERE, this should provide the information you need.

(Hmmmmmm, looks like it's time to give this thread a little bump...... )

    Hi guys,

Soon I'll have to take another road-trip, so this evening, I decided to grab the GT783 from the travel bag, and give it some much needed updates. In the process, I became keenly aware just how quiet the GT72 really is..... it is amazingly quiet by comparison. During light task, the GT783's fan is as loud (if not louder), as when the GT72 is ripping through benchmarks. On the other hand, when using the GT72 for light task, you hardly hear it at all, and you actually have to listen closely for fan noise. With poor fan profile and consistent fan cycling, I found myself getting annoyed with the GT783..... and this has never happened before. THE GT72 HAS SPOILED ME! :D

Later, I'll fire up the GT70-2OD for comparison......

Anyhow, just thought I'd share the epiphany.

    :)

Thanks for sharing! Im really getting hyped for this new design. I guess the single fan desing while effective, made us used to high decibels hahaha. My gt60 is silent when working and a turbo jet when gaming :D

This is really good news! I new it was relatively silent compared to the older models but it's also one reason I want to upgrade, can't wait for true next gen GPU's to order a GT72.
Ryzeki I know exactly what your talking about ;)

Still waiting a notebookcheck review to see DB values.

I think there is no DB test video between G750JZ and MSI GT72?

    This is all your fault....

Mine is sitting in a box in my family room waiting for when I get home from work. I upgraded from an old XPS 15 (L502x) that worked fine for games when the detail was zoomed way down. I am definitely lookng forward to cracking this open tonight....
