This is just purely opinion, but here's why I opted to go for the 15 inch vs the 17 inch. I've had both 17's and 15's before. I personally find that on the 15 inch, because the screen is physically smaller, I don't need to always turn on AA. Whereas on the 17 inch, even though it's still 1920x1080, because the image is just that much bigger physically, I need to turn on AA more often.
I guess what I am trying to say is for me personally, having the 15 inch version allows me to play games without the need for AA all of the time, thus allowing for better performance in some cases, and the image still looks great.
To me, if I turn off AA on a 17 inch screen, the jaggies are a lot more noticeable vs when I turn AA off on a 15 inch screen.
Like I said though, just my personal opinion.![]()

As mentioned above, I went for portability although I really wanted the Steelseries keyboard. Also I think those of is going for 15 might sacrifice a bit of cooling power, as common sense tells me a bigger chasis will cool a bit better. We'll have to wait for the tests to know for sure though. Other than portability, screen size, and keyboard, I don't see much difference between the two laptops and it will be purely up to your personal preference.

Well I wanted the dxr version, but it was just a little too far out of budget. I take it this system is a significant upgrade from an acer 5552g (n660, and 6650m). The Gt683r will be here on Monday.

Someone on Newegg giving this model 5 starts, but he's complaining about the fan: " ....... It's perfect for all but one flaw.
Cons: THE DARN FAN TO KEEP IT COOL IS LOUDER THAN MY DESKTOP!!!!"
Owners, What do you think? -
really like this lap top max i got the cpu temp and gpu is 64 c also i havent put thermal paste on it yet. heres a video of irt playing BC2 on max sorry for the video quality its from my phone MSI GT683DXR 570M - YouTube

Also i couldn't tell if you had AA on, I know you said MAX settings but I thought I'd ask anyway. I don't ever use AA or even count it as a max setting since I prefer sharper image vs less jaggies but blurry. So if you had any AA on and I turn it off it could run that much better. -
Yah all settings maxed AA and the other one. I had the fan on full blast its really not that loud and cools really well.

Maybe a video of it booted up and pan the camera around so I can see how the lighting looks in each mode.
A Borderlands video would be great too if you have that game.
Do you have another laptop to help compare the relative size? I searched and searched for a 15" vs 17" comparison when I was trying to decide which one to go with. I've seen some 15's the same size as some 17's depending on the case design etc. -
ill put up mafia 2 counter strike and the camera and other stuff tomorrow or tonight i am downloading stuff as of now on steam.
-
i got 62 c on gpu and 58 on cpu when playing bc2 not bad at all. 70 c when fan was fully on.

heres some short quick shots with the camera i would make them longer but i havent figured that out yet

i hooked this up to my tv last night for watching movies i didnt have to press anything to put video up on screen. It instantly put it on the tv, personally this is one of the best laptops i ve used. usually theres always something i dont like and i havent found one problem yet. The speakers are amazing to say the least. the laptop looks way better in person than in the pictures. I thought i was going to hate the lights on it but actually they look really cool. Battery has lasted very long dont know exact length but 2 hours or mode play bc2 with turbo and fan on. screen quality and camera is down right amazing. i will be posting my laptop vs my desktop booting times. My desktop has i72600k, 580gtx, vertex 3, all liquid cooled so desktop will win but it should be close.

thanks thats how my computer looks to me shes sexy. But now iam wondering about upgrading the thermal paste. But the huge problem is that they have a warranty void sticker on one of the screws so you cant take off the back plate to upgrade or apply thermal paste. Also i have to figure out what installed last night. i was playing games got done let the computer sit there over night. woke up this morning and all my games are lagging a lot also the turbo mode doesnt work anymore. the program is up but the enable and disable is greyed out. I am thinking this is stupid drviers and windows fault ill keep you guys informed.
-
so sorry it started malfunctioning
But, how do you know it caused by the windows drivers? could it be hardware issue? -
Well that stinks, I hope you can figure it out! Is it fully plugged in and windows says it's on AC power? Also did you do any tweaking that could have shut down the program that runs those functions? I've heard some people didn't want it running and lost some functions. I plan to just leave it running and not mess with it.
Can you slowly but patiently peel the sticker off using a razor blade and keep it in one piece? Then you can put it on wax paper and save it for any warranty work. You stick it back on and send it in.
Personally I really hope NOT to do a repaste. I've fiddled with that over the years and never really got the awesome results some have. I just want the system to work stock without overheating. I will manage how much overclock I can do by watching the temps, rather than the opposite (minimizing temps so you can overclock as much as possible). -
-
Well, you don't have to do repaste, unless it's really needed.Msi stock thermal paste is mx2,which is very good performer.I have changed mine on gpu from stock to ICD and noticed 1C difference. That's really not the reason for voiding your warranty.
-
-
I fixed it some how nvidia drivers were screwed up and disabled everything. I ve never seen that before. the turbo button works again now and games are back to normal. thats a good idea with the sticker ill try need to it. This computer is great for what it does it doesnt need to be overclocked i just like applying paste so i can drop the temps that much more even though this doesnt need it. On a straight hour of playing BC2 max everything with laptop on my lap the video card got up to 72 c with fan max and cpu was at 65 c so that not bad at all on my lap.i still give this laptop 2 thumbs up accept for the warranty void sticker which shouldnt be there since the computer can easily be upgraded by taking off 5 screws. I feel like its a tease its sort of dumb on their part.

Here's a kinda dumb question for anyone who has opened thiers up.
Which memory slot is open (if you had a 12GB model) so I don't have to guess and open the wrong side up? I really do not need more memory, but since it's only $20 I would like to make it a nice clean number (4,8,16 etc).
Also what brand and speed memory does it usually come with? I think it's 1333mhz memory but have no idea what brand they typically come with and if possible I will try to get a macthing one.
Just getting excited and doing some reasearch until it arrives on Wednesday.
Also if anyone happens to have a 17" notebook that they can take and post a side by side pic I would appreciate itI've had just about everything other than a 15" (from 4" ultraportables to 14's) and the last half dozen have been 17's. I know the dimensions but it's hard to visualize what it will look like.

The slot that is open is under the bottom panel, the memory is most likely elixir 1333mHz. -
Thanks for all the replies. I think I am convinced and will buy the 683 instead of the 780. I cannot get any specific info from anyone regarding the problems with the backlit keyboard. Hardly a surprise, what retailer is going to destroy a sale by telling me the bigger more expensive computer he wants to sell me to help him achieve his target this month has an unsolved manufacturers problem
The backlit keyboard was no deal breaker for me anyway. Its just sometimes I play at night in the dark and hate having to tilt the screen when I am typing. I assume with the 683 that the LED's down the side help with the illumination and the most significant keys have lights on them anyway. -
Burtman88, when doing normal computing (browsing + streaming + MS office) for an hour or so, do you hear the fans? Are they noticeable?
Thanks in advance -

I am confused between the the Asus and MSI? Does anyone of you guys own or owned both? Please i need your help guys to make the right decesion
Thanks -
Which Asus? I didn't think they made a 15" with a 570m that was comparable to this MSI.

I am curious about the stock screen with the 683R/DXR, how does it measure up in your opinion?
-
My machine came with the LG screen, which from what I hear seems to be the norm with the 683 series. That being said, this is one of the nicest screens I have ever seen on a 15" notebook. It's not too often that I say one of the things I love most about a notebook is the screen, but in this case that would apply.
For example, both of the G53's that I had (JW & SW) had absolutely horrible screens. They both had a terrible viewing angles, and a non-existant contrast ratio. The screen on this model blows it away. Blacks are black, and the colors are vivid. -

Sorry guys, I think my question was not clear
I meant ASUS G74SX-A2 or (MSI GT783 DXR or MSI GT683DXR)? the size is not a problem for me. I know that the MSI has beter video card, e-sata port and HD camera.
I am leaning toward the MSI, but still afraid to throw my money for it because of the reported issues I read in the forum. On the other hand, people are saying Asus laptops are more solid pretty quiet.
Again, the video card, e-sata and HD webcam of the MSI are not a a deal-breaker for me.
I am more concerned about a laptop that lasts many years without issues
Thanks in advance for everyone! -
Anyone received theirs yet?

@soysauce: ill have mine tomorrow, did you get yours already? how was it?
