Thank you.. Are you sure 1.1 is glossy and 1.2 is matte?

Try the BIOS and EC updates first to see if the noise can be resolved or not.
Here's the download page for GE40 2OC, which has BIOS, EC firmware, and latest drivers.
    GE40 2OC

To update BIOS, unzip the package, double-click on FLASHWIN.BAT to update within Windows.
To update EC firmware, unzip the package, double-click on AUTOFLASH.EXE to update within Windows.
For drivers, download and install them one by one to the newest versions.

I did my upgrade in December - it was revolutionary. As Mirar said, this laptop went from being so-so to my best.

I used the 1.1 - it was matte.

I sourced my screen from ebay using this vendor - Laptop LCD Screen for AU Optronics B140HAN01 1 14 0" Full HD | eBay

It took 2 weeks for the screen to arrive where I live in a remote part of Australia. It was very well packed.

Good luck if you go through with the upgrade - you definitely won't regret it!

Thank you, I asked him and he said that " 1.2 is matte and 1.1 matte too, they are same " :) Is it original right?

Came here to report success with the screen mod!

I purchased this sceen here last week.

It arrived, and I installed, it today. Can't argue with the results; the screen looks fantastic, sharp with bright colors and almost unlimited viewing angles.

Just a general comment for anyone attempting this, you really have to bend the bezel at some pretty extreme angles to turn the two screws that hold the screen in place. The screen is held in place unlike anything I've seen in the screen replacement demonstrations I saw on youtube, and you have to somewhat flex the back to slide the panel downwards to move it in and out of place. Overall well worth it if you're comfortable working with computers.

I was looking at picking the MSI GE40 2OC-245US up this month and I've noticed that most resellers have removed it from their stores... Does anyone know if they're just waiting on shipments? I've poked around on MSI's sites and it doesn't look like it's discontinued. If so, any ideas on dates? I've spent a solid month researching 14" laptops that can serve what I need: linux development environment first, light (windows) gaming a distant second. This GE40 seems like it's clearly the king of the hill in this market.

All of that said, it does look like there are still HD+ models out there, is it possible to upgrade the screen on one of the HD+ models to a FHD screen? Thanks in advance!

Yes, the screen can be updated, but you need to do it yourself. See other posts from this thread for instructions, including where to buy the screen. The AU Optronics B140HAN01.1 14 0" Full HD screen is the one that I and others used.

It is a huge improvement in terms of colours and viewing angles on the stock screen.

Good luck if you decide to buy - it is a great laptop :)

The VBIOS is enclosed in the main BIOS so the only time you will see a VBIOS update is when MSI releases a new BIOS.
However, it's less likely to see a VBIOS release since it rarely gets updated.

Yup, I've noticed. That's indeed a separate VGA BIOS update, thank you for your correction.
Description: enable GPIO12(let DC mode can not running under P0),
    It is a DOS package.

Any idea if that would work on a barebones laptop Kevin? Also if it isn't too much trouble any chance you could supply a link to the latest BIOS/FW (10O/508) for barebones again if you have it yet. Thanks.

10N the previous version improved support for 8.1 iirc, and the current version 10O fixes sound not working after resuming from standby. I was having some Bluetooth and WiFi issues which were fixed by upgrading to the previous firmware, 507.

I'm looking for the latest BIOS compatible with the barebones as well. I got mine from PCSPECIALIST - Custom PCs, Custom Computers, Custom PC, Desktop PC, Custom Built Computers, Gaming PC, my BIOS screen is the PC Specialist logo, so they've definitely put their own BIOS in and I don't want to risk flashing another BIOS unless I know its 100% compatible.

Also, are there any custom BIOSes available, or any place where they can be requested? I'm specifically looking for the feature to be able to stop charging at a pre-defined charge level to preserve the battery life-span...I've just begun learning assembly coding and if anybody knows where to begin with BIOS modding, I'd be very interested in learning more...

EDIT: my current BIOS version is E1492IMT.10H. I can't seem to find the EC version in System Information..

EDIT2: I was using windows 7, after dual booting windows 8.1, i can now see the EC version as 255.255...
I'm having problems with windows 8.1 - SCM and Soundblaster EQ keep crashing.

So I've been looking around and trying to find a place to buy an additional battery for the ge40 that sells a legit MSI battery (or at least something that isn't likely to be counterfeit) and found that is hard to do. Does anyone have any suggestions on places to order from that ships to the US?

I'd been looking around before, in case I'd ever need one.. There's lots of shops selling what they claim are original batteries for the ge40...Whether they're really genuine or some sort of scam is anybody's guess, but here's a few places to check out:

MSI BTY-M46 Battery | Laptop Battery Online Store
    MSI 65Wh Li-ion Battery BTY-M46 Black
    BTY-M46 11.1V 67Wh battery for MSI laptop : Laptop parts shop, laptop batteries,laptop adapters,Hard Drive,Keyboard,Parts ...
    MSI BTY-M46 Laptop Battery

A link from amazon.com came up in the search, but it seems its just an image of a product that was removed from their store...Too bad, most of these sites seem a little shady, if only amazon were still selling it..

Thanks for the reply. Those are most of the sites I came up with. I tried the single highly rated shop but I'm 8 weeks into the order now without a battery. So I hesitate to try the others a lot of which look like they're out as well. I'm wondering if MSI just isn't shipping these right now.

I'll keep at it and update if I find someplace more trustworthy to order from.

    Hi,

Did you guys all replaced a 900p stock screen toward a 1080p screen?

I am slightly worried by the web site https://www.laptopscreen.com/English/model/MSI/GE40~DRAGON~EYES/
It says that 900p screens actually connects with 40pins while 1080p uses 30pins?

    Do you reckon this?

I just purchased a 900p version in France wishing to perform the screen upgrade to AUO B140HAN01.1, Do you believe the connectors will be compatible?

    Thanks for your help,

    ====================
The screen is AUO B140RTN03.0 no doubt it's an EDP30 pins.

You might want to use Monitor Asset Manager to determine what is your actual screen hardware.

Hi does anyone have the realtek RTL8723AE as their wifi adapter? It's been giving me problems as it keeps disconnecting from the network after a random period of time. Wifi is slow too sometimes. I have tried using different drivers but I'm not able to solve the problem yet. Does anyone have any suggestions/solutions? And is it possible to change the wifi adapter myself?

I had same problem. I managed to fix it by updating firmware and bios to latest version and reverting WIFI back to stock drivers on Windows 8.1

On another note, I seem to be having this random error "VIDEO_DXGKRNL_FATAL_ERROR" after installing the intel chipset drivers. Can anyone shed some light on this? I was just running stock windows 8.1 drivers for this also but thought I might be able to squeeze a few more frames in my games by updating the chipset dirvers.

I got away with modding the new nvidia GPU firmware to 765M clockspeeds, just needed some IC Diamond on the GPU and CPU.

Also, does anyone know where I can find a replacement for the 30 pin cable that connects the LCD?

Alright guys, I have a very serious problem. I was playing Batman: Arkham Asylum today when my sister closed my laptop screen. In a fit of panic I opened it (it sounded like she had closed it a little hard, but not too much so) and there was a black line down the left side of the screen, near the center. I logged on and it was still there in my game (which had not minimized; it was still on the same scene during which it had been closed). In a fit of panic I closed the game (line still there) and then pushed the stand-by button. I opened it again and logged on, and now the part of the screen to the left side of the line had messed up colors. I found that if I lightly pressed my screen along the line, the colours would become almost normal again, but the line would remain. I restarted the computer and the colors only got worse. I restarted it two more times (these times shutting off and booting the laptop manually with the button), and now the part of my screen to the left of the line is almost entirely white. I can very faintly see my desktop icons on that part of the screen, and the bottom left and top left corners of the screen are black. Screenshots with the Prt Scr button look fine, as if there was nothing wrong (I didn't expect them to show any indication of error). I dropped 1.4k on this laptop and am not looking to get a new one anytime soon. This thing is my primary computing device. Is it a hardware problem? Software problem? Both? Will I have to get a new screen? Will my warranty cover this (it hasn't expired yet)? I need some help ASAP. :(

It looks hardware problem, I think you have broken your laptop display.
You can replace it by your self, watch videos or follow the disassemble guide
Good luck and don´t worry about warranty, you have already voided it.
You can also take it to a specialized computer shop, and ask for repair budget.
    Regards.

I have GE40 with HDD in optical drive bay and mSATA SSD adapter with just one SSD installed. I would like to upgrade it to 2xSSD RAID0 configuration. It was reported that it is possible, but I am concerned about details:
    1) Will Intel Rapid Start work with 2xSSD RAID0? I could find a document stating that it is not compatible, but it is two years old. I know that there are factory configurations with 2xSSD RAID0, can anyone confirm whether Intel Rapid Start works there?
    2) I have 'ACPI' version of BIOS for W8. Is it mandatory to upgrade it to 'RAID' version, and is it generally possible/safe?

Also I have two related questions:
    3) Is there any good reference regarding partitions structure? I have 5 partitions on SSD and 2 partitions on HDD, which looks like an overkill.
    4) Is there an easy way to migrate installed W8.1 from SSD to RAID0 without reinstalling it?

    Regards.

    Thanks for responding. But :

    1. Where do I buy the caddy, how much will it cost and do I need to hire expertise (probably with extra cost) to do the upgrade for me.

    2. On the MSI website it says that this laptop can support raid0, which combines two SSD together.

    And

    3. Will these upgrades void my warranty because to open the cover, there is a warranty sticker blocking one of the screws.

    4. Can I upgrade my screen to a touchscreen and how.

    Thanks in advance

    1. eBay sells it, look for "12.7mm SATA 2nd HDD HD Hard Driver Caddy for Universal CD DVD Optical Bay G9".
    2. Currently, they don't have the SKU with RAID yet, but you can still get an upgrade to perform RAID.
    MSI Notebook Official Website
    3. Upgrade won't void you warranty unless if it's damaged in the process
    4. No, you cannot since MSI did not design it to have a touchscreen capability.

Finally went through SSD RAID upgrade process, so here are answers to my own questions in case somebody wants to do the same.

Finally it worked out, but I had a lot of problems with it. I had different SSDs in RAID so that might the reason. Nevertheless, here is what has to be done:
    a) Rapid Start partition has to be located below 128Gb limit. I put it between EFI and MSR partitions and it is fine there.
    b) I had freezes for 30 seconds when I resumed from S4. It was solved by installing (not yet officially released) Intel Rapid Storage v13 driver.

Works fine with 10P, but I also tried to upgrade to 30P and it is safe.

First WinRE partitions seems to belong to Win 8, second WinRE - to Win 8.1. Dunno why it didn't merge them on upgrade. F3 recovery uses first WinRE, Windows itself uses second. As a result F3 recovery WinRE lacks some features.
I managed to move second WinRE content over first one, edit BCD and then remove second WinRE, so F3 recovery enters same recovery as Windows itself does (and it is fully functional).
BIOS_RVY has to be kept to ensure F3 recovery is launched, but it is not required to keep it's content. Actually, I renamed WinRE paritition to BIOS_RVY, removed original BIOS_RVY and got F3 recovery working fine. But I got problems with Windows Backup, so I had to restore the BIOS_RVY image as is.

    Windows backup does the job.

    Hi
I'm hoping somebody can help me out. I've owned this laptop for the last 12 months and I've had nothing but trouble with it! After 7 months , the hdd needed replacing and was done under warranty. 4 months later it was back with MSI for more repairs. I thought the issue was with the graphics gpu but clearly not when they replaced with new motherboard, cpu, fan and screen. Old gpu card and hdd were not replaced.

I've now had the laptop back just over a week and all was fine, in fact working great. Better than when it arrived brand new to me from Aria PC . I went mad and purchased some new games in the steam summer sale and went gaming on my gaming laptop.

Having turned it on yesterday, the power button kept flashing alternate blue/Orange for around a minute then stayed on blue and no signs of life on the screen but fan can be heard working on the inside.

I can no longer use the laptop again and will not even go to bios. It's as if its just given up the ghost and shut itself down! Lol!

I have so lost faith in it that I'm considering just asking for my money back if they will do that for me, guessing they won't though so can anybody help me out please

The light changes colour when switching between the intel graphics and dedicated graphics so seems like a GPU issue, pretty bad luck there :(

I had looked that up somewhere else so that does make sense.

When I rang the repair company for an update, I was told that they could not find an issue with the gpu and having spoken to a senior msi tech, agreed to replace the other items due to possible overheating in the unit.

I'm guessing my first instincts were correct then when I reported what I thought was a gpu card issue.

Is there anyway to rectify this myself? I am still under warranty so do not want to void this but once again its going to be a 28 day round trip if I sent it back to them.

Where do I stand on the sale of goods act as this clearly was never fit for purpose in the first instance!

    Hey guys,

got a few performance issues with my GE40 in the past 2 months. I bought the laptop in October 2013 and installed 4GB additional RAM in December (PNY, 1333MHz iirc). Everything worked fine (45-50FPS in Battlefield 4 on High settings, ~200FPS in League of Legends on Ultra, Win 8.1 64bit) but the performance gradually declined over the last few weeks. I can only play LoL on low settings with about 80FPS at the moment. At first I thought my system was messed up and installed Win 7 x64, but the perfomance didnt really increase. Can you guys help me out?

    Thanks in advance!

You can try different driver versions from Nvidia to see which give you the best performance.

Its very odd to see your performance drop by more then half. Make sure you're plugged into power and double check your power settings to make sure you're on high performance.

    Hey,

I'm always plugged in and my energy settings are on high performance. I think the performance drops due to the CPU overheating and throttling. I cleaned my fand and heatsinks yesterday and went from 85°C CPU to about 77°C under load. Would adding a cooling pad help me?

    Cheers
