Maybe my throttling is due to my bios on Win8 ?

I checked my bios version and it is "American Megatrends Inc E16F3IMS.50K, 9/18/2012"

Is this the latest bios for my system or do i need to update ?

The results are consistent. It was tested out of the box and everything is stock including drivers and thermal paste.

I did get "display drivers error but was recovered" message once. if you get low score with OC try reboot and run the test again see if it make difference.

There are newer BIOS version E16F3IMS.50T 2012-11-22 you can download here, maybe it will make difference:

I can't tell, is running Windows 8 and its appropriate BIOS versions allowing you to get these scores? I'm running Windows 7 and its latest BIOS versions and I can't get anywhere past 6000. The GT60 ONE220 Should technically be able to achieve the same 3Dmark scores right?

    No Turbo.JPG

If one were to update their Windows 7 system to Windows 8, and then Flash the Windows 8 BIOS, do you think 3Dmark11 scores would go up?

Spoke with Ken and he's express shipping me a new SSD as it looks like there's an issue with the OCZ Vertex 4 model I have. I took the laptop home and on 1st boot it freezes then it works on the second try. Fail boot then works, fail boot then works.

Not thrilled with this but I have to say Ken was really good to deal with.

allright i installed the new win8 bios, i reinstalled a new copy of windows, and with the turbo button on and fan on without msi afterburner, im getting P6070.

Is this a normal score ? Should i expect to hit 6800 if if Overclock ?

Also after i reinstalled my windows copy , i have less space now cause i have 2 copies of windows. One of them is colled "Windows.old". Is it ok to delete that one ?

Windows.old has your old files, take what you need from them (personal data) and delete it.

6070 is a very normal score.

    ------------------------------------------
So I flashed Saltius 1.037V VBIOS and only got NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-3610QM Processor,Micro-Star International Co., Ltd. MS-16F3 score: P6947 3DMarks

    Something is seriously not right.

    1032/2601: http://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/5301016

I'm getting coil whine, so this vbios is probably not something I want to keep.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-3630QM Processor,Micro-Star International Co., Ltd. MS-16F3 score: P6619 3DMarks

Without Turbo on and no overclocking I was able to get a score of 6270. When I turned on Turbo and overclocked with +135 core clock and +178 memory clock I was able to score a 6619. What I noticed is I had a really low score on the combined test. I am going to play with the settings later tonight and see if I can get over 6800. So IMO..I think that you should be getting a tad bit higher than 6000.

svl7 removed it and just put a new version.

According to him: - Version 80.04.33.00.24 (MSI)
    - tweaked for better performance at higher clocks
    - stock default clocks / voltage
    - adjustable clocks
    - higher software overclocking limits

    Get it here:
NVIDIA Kepler VBIOS mods - Overclocking Editions, modified clocks, voltage tweaks

PM me if you don't have an account there (I'll just send it to you)

I have achieved with this new vbios: +300/+500 W/TS NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-3610QM Processor,Micro-Star International Co., Ltd. MS-16F3 score: P7796 3DMarks

Personally, I use nvflash for windows. Use cmd to run it using nvflash.exe -6 [yourbios].rom and restart

Download NVFlash 5.118 for Windows | techPowerUp

It certainly less safer than dos flashing but I take my chances.

Here's a full DOS guide written by HTWingNut: http://forum.notebookreview.com/gam...flash-version-use-gtx-680m-2.html#post8795016

    Safe flashing :)

Like 8 hours left until I get it.

Anyone have any questions they want me to answer about the unboxing/laptop?

I'm also going to try to make a mini review, but no promises.

Let me know what you would like on the review.

Hats off to Ken at GenTechPC for figuring out what was wrong with my new laptop and express shipping a new Crucial M4 SSD drive to me. I took out the Vertex 4 drive, swapped in the new one and it works like it should.

I can tell you I'll think twice before getting anything from OCZ in the future.

Playing Diablo III with everything maxed out. It must not be a very taxing game as I'm getting 200+ FPS. So far I'm loving playing all the games I have on max settings.

With a +340/+500 I was able to achieve this:

P8005 with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680M(1x) and Intel Core i7-3630QM Processor
    Graphics Score 8496
    Physics Score 7269
    Combined Score 6248

It seems Nvidia gimps this card so much.

I saw this 220 watts on delta electronics inc. Same manufacturer with the original ac adapters for MSI GT 60/70 series...

    180watts
Welcome to Delta Electronics, Inc. - Power Management

    220 watts
Welcome to Delta Electronics, Inc. - Power Management

Question.. If i want to upgrade my mobile cpu to Extreme series.. Is the 220 watts sufficient? Because my gpu now is 680M. And is this adapter compatible with the NB? I can see same specs though .. Only there's a slight difference in Output rating.. 12v/15a (180watts) vs 12v/18.3a(220watts) plus the connector is atx for 220watts is there a converter for this one?

Sadly the GT60 I got came with a faulty keyboard, so I had to send it back(I think it's reasonable to return a laptop if it comes with a broken part!)

Ken and GentechPC have been great throughout the entire experience. Pre-preordering it, ordering it, getting it sent out to fit my tight time window while in the states, and sending it back. I strongly recommend them.

A few impressions I have of the gt60 from my few minutes with it:

The keyboard, other than the space bar, is pretty good.
The speakers are really good. Like really, really good.
The trackpad is quite rough, and for me was not that usable, but maybe it's related to the keyboard problem?

It's been great being a part of this thread, and I'll miss it. I'll try to keep on posting here from time to time, but yea, it's been fun guys. Goodluck to anyone else.

And again, Ken's been great. I really want to emphasize that. I mean, he responded to my refund request on christmas day! Not many stores do that.

BRIGHTNESS ISSUE FIXED. DOWNLOAD THE CORRECT BETA EC VERSION ACCORDING TO YOUR LAPTOP MODEL. 220US (WINDOWS 7 INITIALLY) = T16, 249US (WINDOWS 8 INITIALLY) = T17

Not getting full performance from your MSI GTx0 Laptop? [680M ONLY]

Here's a guide on how to unlock its full power:

[DO THIS ON YOUR OWN RISK, I DO NOT TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY DAMAGES THIS CAUSES]

    1) Install the beta EC that prevents throttling.
    -Download it from here BETA EC for GT60 (16F3) & GT70 (1762) [16F3EMS1_T16.rar= GT60-220US, 1762EMS1_T16.rar= GT70-220US] [16F3EMS1_T17.rar= GT60-249US, 1762EMS1_T17.rar= GT70-249US]
-Connect a USB Flash drive formatted to FAT32
-Download UNetbootin from here UNetbootin - Homepage and Downloads ,run it and choose Freedos from the distribution and make sure your Drive is chosen then click OK. Do not reboot after the process is completed!
-Extract the files in the beta EC folder to the root of your flash drive.
-Restart and press F11 and chose your flash drive to boot from.
    -Choose Default.
-Select DOS Safemode + Do not load any drivers
-Type c: and hit enter, then type dir and hit enter. If you see ecall.bat as a listed file, then you're fine, else test out A: , B: , D: until your find the files listed.
-Type ecall.bat and hit enter, the flashing should start... Wait until it finishes and remove the power cord and battery, wait for 30 seconds and boot.

    2) Flash svl7's unlocked MSI VBIOS
    - Download ' MSI 680m - 80.04.33.00.24_'OCedition'_revised_01.zip' from here NVIDIA Kepler VBIOS mods - Overclocking Editions, modified clocks, voltage tweaks
    - Download nvflash for windows from here: Download NVFlash 5.118 for Windows | techPowerUp
    - Extract it to a folder called nv on the desktop.
    - Place the '80.04.33.00.24_'OCedition'_revised_01.rom' inside the nv folder. [80.04.33.00.24_'OCedition'_revised_01.rom is in 80.04.33.00.24_'OCedition'_revised_01.zip]
    - Start the command prompt, type cd C:\Users\[YOURUSERNAME]\Desktop\nv and hit enter, where [YOURUSERNAME] is your username on your laptop.
    - Type nvflash.exe -6 80.04.33.00.24_'OCedition'_revised_01.rom and hit enter. Press Y if it prompts you to do so.

Has anyone tried anything to fix the missing keystroke issues on the keyboard or are people just dealing with it?

Would it be possible to swap the keyboard out with the 16F2/16F3 barebone keyboards?
I didn't have an issues with those when I owned those laptops, though you would lose the multicolor LED backlight.

I'm not understanding why the top end laptops like the GT60/GT70 and the NP9150 have these kinds of missed keystroke issues while $300 laptops type just fine.
My NP9150 keyboard was worse than this GT60 when I owned that laptop.

Also, does anyone's matte screen look yellowish compared to other displays?
My matte screen is very yellowish compared to my desktop and other 2 laptops.

eh guys.. Those of you who bought your MSI GT60/70 with the original gt680m, I would like to ask something..... Does your GPU got a back plate? can you post some pics on the heatsink of your gpu plus the back plate if there's any? I just recently upgraded my gpu to 680M from eurocom but I cant simply tame this beast temps(reaching to 90 degrees celcius and it stutters at this point) .. I followed everything from putting those thermal pads according to its layout design, cleaning the fan and repasting it.... Thanks...

This is because the integrated is working over the dedicated. Just force the dedicated to work by running MSI Afterburner.

No, it uses built in posts.

Check you are using high quality 0.5mm thermal pads, apply thermal paste correctly and the heatsink is secured tight.

Not all GPUs are created equally, if it starts to crash you may want to lower the clock to prevent damage to the GPU.

I considered downloading MSI afterburner but decided against it since I have no clue what I'm doing and really don't want to screw it up. I was searching for some screen grabs of safe OC settings you can use but I haven't found any. I'm guessing that is what turbo does or am I completely off on that assumption.

I'm really pleased at how this system is working so far. The only suggestion I would make for the keyboard is if you could change the individual colors for the keys and say only have the keys light up for each different game you use. Minor really but overall I really like the feel of this keyboard. It feels really solid.

Has anyone had their brightness functionality not work after flashing an EC? Especially the beta EC from MSI?

    @Meaker

Sorry for this noob question but what do you mean? So the original gt60-one doesnt have any gpu bracket at the back as well? Even if i use the stock vbios and official release of ec firmware, still the temps goes as high as 96degrees celcius (with turbo fan on and using AB) while playing dx11 games like BF3 at ultra settings. So the stock thermal pads that came with the gtx680m isn't sufficient enough to stabilize the temps? Please someone help me tame this GTX680M beasts and could someone posts some pics with the original MSI GT60-one with GTX680M plus the actual size layout of thermal pads? I hear my fan is spinning hard but i dont know how loud it is compared to other owners.

Now i reverted back to svl7 msi vbios cos the outcome of the temps is still the same.

I probably need to get another set of these thermal pads too...

Hmm i got that kind of temps once on my alienware machine until i found out the heatsink contact and the chip is not secured firmly. I think your issue is the card or chip not in full contact with the heatsink

but the screws are tight already... Could it be the thermal pads? But when i check it thoroughly on the sides the thermal pads are touching the heatsink. But wait, even if the heatsink isn't that secured, the heatsink is so hot at that time. And the gpu doesnt have any bracket at the back not like AW. I removed the gpu bracket as MSI GT series got mounting holes for the gpu itself...

If this is the case then I must totally remove again the mxm board and check the pads if it is properly touching the GPU heatsink?

    tnx

Open up the heatsink and check the thermal paste for contact if its not secured firmly the paste will be like pretty new. Don,t worry too much about the thermal pads the chip contact is more important. My temps are 85 max with turbo on n turbo fan off. If you can hit 96 with turbo fan very likely is the heatsink contact and the chip not the thermal pads and you do not need to use the bracket.

    Thanks imba,

Will try to remove the heatsink and the mxm board. Then I'll check if the chip is properly attached to the gpu heatsink. BTW.. what brand of thermal paste you using?

    Hi all,

I registered here because I want to buy the GT60 and have couple of Q here are the specs:
Display: 95% NTSC Color Gamut (1920x1080)
    Processor: i7-3630QM
    Thermal Compound: IC Diamond
    Ram: 16GB DDR3 1600MHz Kingston HyperX
    Hard Drive: 2X 250GB Samsung 840 (Raid 0)
Optical Drive: Combo Dual Layer SuperMulti DVDRW/CDRW Drive w/ Software (I heard the Blue ray make more noise and I don’t use it that much)
    Wireless Network: Bigfoot Networks Killer™ Wireless-N 1103

Note that I Checked at PowerNotebooks (cost 2580$), Gentech (2626$) & Xoticpc (2502$). Money is not really a problem with me as long I know that it’s worth it (my budget is 2500-3500).

Q1: is it worth it to calibrate the screen (I watch a lot movies, TV series and play heavy games on my pc like Shogun 2 and Dark Souls and others)
Q2: will the extra copper cooling will help cool my lap (they have this option in Xoticpc)
Q3: will it be worth it to upgrade the CPU performance wise (I read that you will only need i7-3630QM the others are not worth the upgrade also that they produce more heat which is a problem to me)

    1. No it is not worth getting the calibration as it comes calibrated and my 95% looked perfect when I got it from Gentech. Its a waste of money XoticPC charges to have it done.
    2. The extra copper is also a waste of money as it is only a tiny bit and does not need it. The temps are fine without it.
    3. The CPU upgrade is not worth the money, its not going to offer much of a difference at all in speed, spend the extra money on RAM, or bigger SSD's.

What does that +340/+500 refer to? Sorry for the noob question. Could you take a pic of your MSI afterburner settings? Is this something you did without flashing the BIOS?

This is the overclocking values, +340 is on the core clock, +500 is on the memory clock.

For me, +300/+500 is the most stable and here's a screenshot.

    UPDATE:

If you flashed the beta EC and lost brightness control, then you can now flash another version (T17) that fixes this issue.
    Version T16 is for GT60-220US
    Version T17 is for GT60-249US

I updated the instructions. Let me know if you have any questions!

Is it worth getting a normal GT60 over a barebones version? Does the overclock option really affect the performance?
