Thanks, but do you know which one of these 3 made our model compatible with 8.1? If you remember, 8.1 was not supported on the gt70 when it was first released. I guess I would feel more comfortable if their website stated which updates specifically allow 8.1 to run without issue.

Many months of good work... Now occasionally, my GT70 starts to behave as if I press and hold the "TAB" key (which makes impossible to do anything). It comes and goes.. And also "Z" key needs to be pressed hard to work...
Do you guys know if there are any procedures I can perform on the keyboard which may help? Did you have similar problems? -

Therefore it may be better to just contact MSI and have them replace it under warranty if it's still valid. -
Yeah, it seem to went away on itself magically..... I still vacuumed it after that and so far so good. Will see how it goes. No warranty on this one left. Did anyone replaced the keyboard by yourself? there is this video on youtube..

Be aware that using a vacuum cleaner generates a LARGE amount of static, make sure you remove any heatsinks/fans from the system before cleaning and make sure you and the heatsink are grounded before inserting it again. Do not directly vacuum electronics themselves.

I use a pancake type of air compressor instead of suction type of vaccum, which cleans up much better than the latter.

If you ever tried vacuuming up little polystyrene balls you can make them climb the walls.

Gentlemen, 980m is out... Do you think this piece (when it is available to buy separately) will work with GT70 for upgrade? Or too wide of a gap?
-

-
What about an 880?
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
The VRM layout of the 980m will mean that the heatsink will not fit any GK104 (680M, 780M, 880M etc) based card. The bar that makes contact with the capacitors between the inductors would mean it wont sit flat. The best bet is to grab a heatsink from a 970M or 980M (same layout, though the 970M heatsink may miss pads for the 980m) and give it a go that way.
There is a good chance it will work but remains untested at this time. -
So if I get an 880 and an 880 heatsink I should be ok?
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
You might run into bios issues, and to be honest you are better off tweaking your current 680M than spending money on a 780/880.

No just auto correct trying to sabotage me

I don't mind doing the vbios so an 880 will work?

hey guyz,
I am a GT70-0NE owner, it's an awesome laptop, but something have been bothering me with it, there seems to be no software that checks for drivers and tell you if they need update or not, the drivers seem to not work so well after windows 8.1 update, and the graphics card causse game to stutter if you update it to the latest version, games only work fine if u stick to the version that came with the laptop which is wierd....anybody familiar with what I am talking about? -

The later GT70 0NE:s were delivered with Win 8 - like mine. And I have noticed no special stutterings on any of the 37 (!) drivers on Win 8/8.1 I have tried since 306.14 except on Grid Autosport, which merely may depend on the used HD/SSD compo. But generally the newer drivers tend to give some enhancements and fixes to new titles. Mostly the stutters come from HDs that power down when not in active use.

Will stay tuned - would be great if all this heatsinkmagic works and upgrade 680m to 980m would be possible after all...

Ok I need a higher wattage power brick for my gt70 as when I overclock I get bad throttling due to power restriction.
Any suggestions on what power brick I can get? -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Try to keep the same question to a a single thread. As I said in the other one the 240w slim dell brick with the cable replaced works really well. A clevo 330w delta brick with the same mod also works but is a bit overkill.
-
You actually don't even need to replace the cable. Simply buy the adapter to fit the dell slim 240w brick. I have it already, however, since MSI decided to use this hybrid power crap on this system I am unable to take advantage of it fully. Though it does work perfectly fine, it won't draw more than 180w like the stock power brick.

-
Ordered one. Thanks.

The idea with replacing the cable is to keep it efficient at high power draws and not get a high amount of loss in a thin wire. -
Will my 180 wire not handle the extra 60w then?
-
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
-
Then I'm wasting my time with this am I?
-
-
Ok I will just use my original but if my laptop won't draw any more than 180w is there any point in me doing this? It is the white book model so it may not be restricted, I'm not sure.
-

-
Oh rite So I can take full advantage of it then.

All GT70 (1763 series) are pretty much identical in design, except GT72.
GT70 was designed to draw 180W and then utilize the battery pack.
GT72 is designed to use higher wattage than GT70s.
GT70's limitation (1763 series) is lifted when special EC firmware are used but it can cause more wear and tear to the power board, such EC is only available to MSI internal personnel but not general public.
Meaker, I've noticed that they still have the Power Boost utility under Windows 8 section for GT70 2OD.
GT70 2OD Win8 Utility download page
They can call it GT70 2O to 2P to 2Q but if it's modeled MS-1763 then there are no major difference except GPU change.
Unless MSI removes this feature in the new EC 516 otherwise any MS-1763 should shares the same feature set. -

New GT70 2QD owner here (spec below).
MSI GT70 2QD(Dominator)-2402UK, Intel® Core™ i7-4810MQ Quad Core Processor, 17.3" Full HD Screen, Microsoft Windows 8.1 64-bit, 16GB DDR3 RAM, 256GB SSD, 1000GB HDD, Blu-Ray, Dedicated GeForce GTX 970M Graphics, USB3 | HDMI | DisplayPort | Bluetooth, SteelSeries Backlit Keyboard.
I have a question to ask if it's possible to disable the intel graphics card that show's up in the laptop config?. How can I be sure I'm using the GeForce GTX 970M GPU? would it simply by selecting the GeForce in the Nvidia control panel? is it true that the power light changes colour if using Intel or GeForce?.
I was hoping to use my Oculus DK2 with the laptop but it seem's the HDMI is powered by the Intel card and not the GeForce..
Any BIOS tweaks? or latest versions folks can recommend? or any tweaks and tips in general to get the best performance?
Thanks for reading, and thanks in advance for any replies

I got a confirmation from MSI that all MS-1763 series still use Power Boost (aka Hybrid Power), and the only changes are MXM card, VBIOS, and EC firmware.
Additionally, GT72 (1781) also retained this feature. -
Just wondering can any of the suppliers on here sell me the best glossey screen you can buy for this laptop?
-

The panel you are thinking of is the 90% gamut AUO panel, I can tell you that much at least so you can find it
