Ok. I'm waiting for my GT60 to be delivered to MSI. I could replace the BIOS myself (no problem in soldering SMD chips here :p) but I got a new assignment at my job so less free time on my hands :/
When they ship it back to me I'm gonna go for a 980m. I'll try asking if they can throw in a 980m heatsink too (I'll pay for it ofcourse ;))

Oh and btw for those who bought from Nexoc here in EU, how did you guys pay? Wire transfer or Paypal?

    Hello,
I have a GT70 0NC(MS1762) and I would like to upgrade my card. Is there a list anywhere that confirms which machines this upgrade is compatible with?

edit: noticed the first post has a short list and skimming the last 70+ pages it seems its still an outstanding question.

Hey I just noticed something. If coming from a 675M, the GPU is actually a bigger chip than what's on the 970M. It looks longer and more rectangular. Now looking at the pic, compared to the one Talon posted at the beginning of the thread, are the screws near the GPU the 675M in a different place than the 970M? I realize it may just be an optical illusion, but without having both to compare, I'm wondering if I'm going to have a compatibility issue with the physical location of the screw holes and heat sink that may cause a problem.

    Here's a pic of a 675M at this link:

nvidia geforce 8800 gtx 768mb Picture - More Detailed Picture about NVIDIA GeForce GTX 675M MXM 3.0 DDR5 2GB video for alienware MSI upgrade monkey Picture in Graphics Cards from upgrademonkey | Aliexpress.com | Alibaba Group

    Thoughts?

    Thanks!

Ok! Thank you! Today I've succesfully installed dual boot linux+windows on my RAID configuration and now I'm trying to make SSE work!

And yes, MSI Technical Service changed me my previous 880m to a 980m. It was an outside warranty replacement.

1100 euro's?? That's a 400 euro's more than when you do it yourself with talon's help. But msi provided a 980m, that means the motherboard accepts these cards...( some of you said some things about powerissue's..)

MSI knows our GT60 board can take the 970/980m. Both the 780m and 880m use more power than the 970m and 980m.

They could easily offer the "MXM upgrade" that they are offering to GT72 users, but instead want people to buy their flagship giant laptops. Their fallback excuse is that the cooler isn't compatible. Well the same can be said about the old GT72. It's cooler also is not compatible. Which is why in the upgrade package they offer the updated cooler.

Its not even a question of not having a resigned cooler for the GT60 or GT70. Both the latest GT60/70s with 970m and 980m have this latest cooler and it is fully compatible with any GT60/70, GX60/70, and even old GX660/GT683/783 laptops.

But if you look at their YouTube video it's flooded with comments about how the GT72 is the only laptop available with this crazy upgradable GPU. They're certainly doing a great job creating a new generation of laptop sheep that believe anything their told.

This is true TribalOne. For the price of the 980m upgrade kit, you're spending too much money at that point IMO.

He has a GT70-2PE (one of the latest generation models). Older models can run up to a 970m for now. I don't know if anyone upgraded his Ivy-Bridge GT60/GT70 to a 980m.. the 970m is pretty strong too and comes close to 10% of the 980m once overclocked.
Yes a Clevo 980m can be had for 700€ here in europe. Considering the heatsinks, the card itself, the shipping both ways plus the installation fee, 1100-700=400 euros difference is a bit much (90-100 heatsinks + 30-40 shipping + 60 installation fee, the remaining 200€ is for the 980m price MSI charges for the kit).

Not only that but they even put a lower cost card to newer GT*0-2Q* SKUs (4GB vs 8GB of GT72's 980m).
Clevos have been upgradeable since the first mxm models came out and still are to this day (including CPU too).

And a really good specced one I'd add.

I too tried contacting MSI support Italy and the reply I got was negative. They won't do the upgrade. Now I'll negotiate if I can maybe get a heatsink along with my GT60 back..
Unfortunately I don't have the time right now to swap my BIOS chip and replace it so I did RMA it.
In the mean time I'll try getting the 980m :)

Yap, my calculus were more or less the same. If I had bought all new and replace it for myself, including the shipping I would wasted around 200€ less. But the risk for me of failing was higher.

    Hi guys,

I'm looking to buy a new gaming laptop which is as cheap as possible with upgradeable parts. And in my country I can't get any Clevos :S, Asus are all soldered, so remained the MSI. But I only found a GT70-2PE, which comes with the 880m. And the thing is it is quite a hot running card, and the GT70 has only one fan. I'm really afraid that I could damage the nb with that heat and I guess I'm gonna be locked for 2 years with that one. The question is, do you guys think that the GT70's gonna be compatible with newer cards than 980m in the future?

Regarding future upgrades, who knows. Depends on factors like BIOS/VBIOS compatibility, heatsink, mxm revision etc.
You could get that notebook, buy and install a 970m (with a spare non modified heatsink) and in case you need to send it in for warranty repair, put back the 880m with the spare heatsink.

The 970m and 980m will both work without any issues (I believe modified inf drivers are required but laptop video 2 go has that covered or you can do it yourself. The heatsink either needs to be modified or you can get one from the klatest series.

As long as you have the latest system BIOS, then you should have no problems at all with the upgrade, and will not require any vBIOS changes. You will also be able to install normal Nvidia drivers. You will of course have to modify that 870m heatsink as per the modification on the first page.

Edit: Please be very careful when or if you update your system BIOS. Follow MSI instructions to the T. My suggestion is to simply do the upgrade, then if necessary, update the system BIOS. If its not broke don't fix it!

Hi omega, I installed the premamod vbios and hoped it will help stock, but the firestrike score was lower than with the original clevo bios. Tried to change speeds with afterburner but this still keeps resetting to stock speeds....what now?

    Hi there

I´ve got some questions and this is a copy of the question in the GT72 thread. I´ve got the GT72 and the 970M from MSI with 6 GB:

    1) MSI Kombustor shows a blinking message " GPU Power Limit reached" what does that mean (i guess it´s up on the VBIOS which allows voltage max which is under that what the chip can handle?)

    2) how to overclock the 970/980M "stock BIOS" so MSI Afterburner did not take affect (or I´m too dumb for that) without vBIOS MOD

    3) Is there any VBIOS available for my 970M 6G which is unlocked (voltage & Clock) and will work (anyone tried yet)?

    4) I´m right if i think to flash something wrong (like VBIOS is not working for the card) it´s no problem cause i can use intel GPU to boot re-flash? (I´m very afraid of that cause my old device where i flashed the 5870M with MSI BIOS it run fine, but if that were went wrong i have no idea how to fix that back :) )

    Thx, aVa

    * *yes I´m aware of that overclocking a mobile device is not so good and yes it´s not yet required but the question is in general ... i want to try and find out max. with stock BIOS, also I think there´s space for some Mhz in focus of cooling solution

Hey guys!! What's the best way to remove the x bracket from a 980m RandJ tech card? and should i leave the thermal pads on the modules no the back of the card?

I very very gently took a small laptop screwdriver to put into the screw mounts from the front of the card. One at a time I gently push the xbracket off the back of the card this way. Be very very careful and take your time! A slip with a screwdriver could easily ruin your very expensive GPU.

It won't much pressure and you'll feel the glue holding the xbracket on releasing and loosing from the back of the card.
