Hi people. I have two questions for you:

    1) Anyone knows if NVIDIA will allow to overclock our mobile GPUs with the newer drivers? If not, is there a way to overclock the GPU with the most updated drivers?
    2) I have a GT70 upgraded with the 980m. Now, my laptop is recognized as a GT70-2QE. The problem is that it seems that SteelSeries Engine does not recognize my PC as one with SteelSeries backlit keyboard. So, I can only backlit my keyboard with the KLM software. I tried to find a mail or a via to contact with SteelSeries but did not found anything. Anyone has a e-mail direction to inform them of the issue?

Thank you very much :D :D

347.xx drivers seem not to overclock with a Maxwell chip - at least so far.

Here's another question ... I know DX12 doesn't come out until Windows 10 ships. Is there anything with DX11 that requires Windows 8.x to run? I'm currently running Windows 7 and if I'm going to need to wipe when I install the new card, I'd rather plan for that now.

    Thanks!

PS - anyone know how to change how many posts are displayed on a page?

    Hi all,
read all 48 pages... and very excited. I've been posting on the site for a while but not recently and I went to google yesterday because I was disenchanted with the video quality of my machine and what did I find.... something to spend money on. Thanks Talon! :)
I have opted for the 970M cause I like the idea of cooler temps and half the price.
    Here is my machine:
    GT60-one
    specifically 9S7-16F311-403
    with 3rd Generation Intel® Core™ i7-3820QM and Corsair Vengeance 16GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1866MHz
I'm running the last bios possible (51x).
I will mod existing heatsink and install next week.

    quick point of clarity.
    Looking at Omega's setup....
    System BIOS Version: E16F3IMS.51X (Unlock)
    EC Version: E16F3EMS1 VerT.19

Are either of these modded bios REQUIRED for me to update my very similar setup?
I assume the EC is not required but is the unlocked bios required?

After a long play at Far Cry 3 at highest settings and recording the log with MSI Afterburner I've got temps in GPU rounding 86ºC:
All of that with 344.75 drivers and +135MHz to core clock and +100MHz to memory clock.

Are them normal? Nothing to worry about? I don't know why, but I expected to be rounding 80ºC XD. Thank you guys!

Hi guys, I am not sure if this is the appropriate place to ask this. And I am a newbie in this GPU upgrading field.
    I have a iBUYPOWER CZ-17 / MSI GT70 MS-1762 with i7-3630QM, 16GB RAM, Geforce GTX 675M.
As many of you know, many 675M got messed up because of some driver-related issue, so did mine, just BSOD all the time.
I would like to know if this 970M/980M upgrade will work on my system.
    Thank you in advance.

    Hi SAM3109,
These cards will word in your Barebone. You have to use modded drivers, but that's simple and works perfect...(what a gain!!)

Thanks vseelen. So cool to hear that. But mine isn't really a barebone though coz I bought it from iBUYPOWER. I guess it should still be okay.
I forgot to mention that it is running Windows 7 Home Premium x64, does that make a difference?
If OS isn't a factor then following the instructions on post #1, I should be fine, right?

yeah, so then you really have the same as mine. Make shure you have the newest Bios and find the t17 EC in the MSI forum. Then you will have no problem....just follow the steps...

You'll need the 51X bios to handle the newer cards. However, it doesn't have to be unlocked. Unlocking just makes previously hidden options available. Many of these are engineering settings, but some there are some performance settings that can run tighter memory timings, allow for overclocking (if supported by your processor),etc.

If you want an unlocked BIOS, head over to the official MSI forums and make a post to Svet. He's an admin over there. He'll unlock your BIOS for a small donation. I gave him 10 euros but you're certainly free to give what you feel is appropriate. He's quick and responsive, plus provides all the instructions to make it as easy and safe as possible.

The EC firmware isn't required, but without it you may run into thermal throttling. Therefore it's advised you updated that as well.

    Good luck!

Ok guys! My laptop is confirmed working! I had a temp problem but repasted and it fixed it! My preliminary OC firestrike is 8458! http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/5723811 For the front page I have an MSI GT60 16F4 Barebones Windows 8.1 x64, BIOS Version E16F4IG6.70R, vBios version Clevo 84.04.22.00.10, and a Clevo 980m 8GB card from RJ Tech. Really love this card so far guys! Anyone have tips for the best way to overclock? What driver version and whatnot?

Galm17, did you use the stock or modified drivers?

Phase 1 of the upgrade is now done. The proc (3920XM) and the thermal paste came today, so I put those in. Everything's working great!

A couple things I noticed - and maybe someone can help me out.

In BIOS, it reports as a 3920XM @ 2.90 GHz, but has the clock speed at 2800MHz? Seems a little off ...

The other thing I noticed is that the XM supports VT-d, but it's not showing up in CPU-Z. Is is actually running, or can the 16F3 not handle VT-d? Svet's bios has an option for it.

970M shipped today, so I should have it on Monday or Tuesday. I'm excited!

It seems that svl7 vbios runs much cooler than prema. The default voltage of svl7 is 950mV vs 993 mV of Prema. But when it comes to Ocing the vbios to extreme, Premas vbios is more stable due to a slightly higher stock voltage setting

    Hello guys

I have noticed a difference between MSI vbios and Prema Mod Vbios for GTX 980m.

MSI vbios is ok and its score in 3dmark fire srike is 7340 and its max temperature is 78 c

Prema Vbios makes my GTX 980m temperature reach 90 c ... and i didn't overlock it. Its score in 3dmark fire stike is 8120. it is better but the temperature is high.

Also, I want someone to download vbios for GTX 980m from this website and then upload it http://forum.techinferno.com/genera...s-mods-900m-series-overclocking-versions.html I just want to try it

    Thanks in advance.

Could these be the 960m and 965m? Or are those device IDs already out there and known?

Also sorry been away for about a week. I am very busy with with work and training over the next week. As a consequence I haven't had much time lately between studying for training and work to update the thread with new systems/configurations that have been able to successfully upgrade. I will be updating it with this new information soon, and making it very clear to future 16F3 and 1762 based systems that they need to install the unreleased 51X BIOS.

    Hey Guys!

I just got my 980M and I am about to do the upgrade. Before I do, I wanted to update the Bios. I have the GT70 2PE (MSI GT70 DominatorPro-889) and MSI's website is a little confusing. My current Bios is E1763IMS.50r does this mean I would go to 50v and then 51x? Is there an unlocked Bios for my system?

I am also on a different model than the ones in the original post. GT70 2PE going from an 880M to the 980. Any concerns there? Has anyone done it? I am going to try regardless - just wanted to know since it isn't in the confirmed list.

    Thanks for your help!

Honestly I would just go ahead and do the upgrade first and see if you encounter any sort of issues. You should be good to go with your notebook being so new. I was able to use an old BIOS version and install the card using modded drivers.. Now with current BIOS I am able to use normal drivers.

I would go ahead and do the upgrade and use your existing BIOS. My guess is that it will work fine as is.

Then call or email MSI tech support for an answer to your question, because my people have bricked their laptops after flashing in the wrong order.

    EDIT:

What do you need an unlocked BIOS for? What options or features do you hope to gain? Again people have bricked their laptops by changing options they shouldn't have messed with in unlocked BIOS version.

http://www.3dmark.com/fs/3950336. does this appear to be appropriate for my system? sure is serious upgrade from my 670m. its not quite as impressive as Talons score but for now im stuck with 3610qm.

That FireStrike score is great and exactly what you should see.

My 4900mq makes the difference at stock.

My crazy high scores were from very aggressive overclocks and using hugher voltages from an unlocked vBios.

I game on a stock vBios now and use the +135/100 overclock usually.

what can cause you score to differ if using the same settings? I just ran again , but elevated the laptop in the back more and ended up with a 6277. temps for fire strike are 68c on CPU and 63 on GPU. but that is a short test. 3 hrs of bf4 was about 20c higher on both. are those temps typical? anyone else experiencing similar? or should i be concerned?

I installed the card - I have not installed drivers yet. What steps do I need to take if I don't want to run the modified driver? I just don't want to rely on doing that for the long haul =).

So should I update vBios first and try that or walk through the system Bios update process first?

Thanks guys! This thread is a lot of help.

Just install normal Nvidia drivers and you're good to go most likely. I doubt you'll need to install any modified drivers, but if you do we will get to that when its necessary.

Edit: TribalOne should be an expert at this point and can probably assist you. :D

Sorry about your sea chickens! As far as your nb. You could try installing modified bios as Talon explained in his first post. As far as the bios upgrade I would check with msi as talon suggested. Don't want too brick your nb if you need to follow a specific order for upgrading.unfortunately that has occurred with a few members. Let it's know how that goes.

Actually a Panthers fan, but wanted to see the Hawks get another. But what an ending!

Anyway, I can try the modded drivers but I would like to avoid it. I am not a beginner at updating bios or firmwares in general; however, on MSI stuff I am. It is really confusing - yet I would like to upgrade and see if it brings native support for ease later on. I can't find anything that says what to go to from E1763IMS.50V - and from this: http://www.msi.com/support/nb/GT70-2PE-Dominator-Pro.html#down-bios&Win8.1 64 the best I can think is the 50V next - yet is is a risk and I am a little skeered.

In the OP it also talks about upgrading the vBios - is that recommended? Sorry for the thousand questions. I just want to get it done right. I would gladly pay someone some beer money for an instant messenger session =). For moral support if nothing else, haha.

The modded drivers may not be that big of a deal to use - I just don't want to do that even in simple form every time a new driver drops if it can be prevented.

    Thanks!

Modified drivers not a big deal but can understand your desire for less hassles. Go with what makes you comfortable. VBios change is not necessary. Some are trying different things to See what results they are getting. I believe everyone started with the stock Cleo bios onthe card. I know some that tried others even went back to stock. I haven't tried anything other than that.

The modded drivers won't be necessary, we got him fixed up and he's using normal drivers.

Chalk the scoreboard again, another GT70 user upgraded to a 980m.

Unless you can get your hands on an official MSI GT60/70 970m heatsink, you will have to use a 700m or 800m series heatsink and dremel it as described in the first post.

As requested I've updated the original post with some additional system configs that are now rocking Maxwell GPUs.

I am also planning a test of the 970m on a GX660 (16F1) laptop in the near future. My brother still has this laptop with a 920XM CPU, and I am curious to see if it will work. I know it doesn't really apply to many users, but some people are still using this laptop and it would be great to see how the 920xm overclocked can hold up with a modern day Maxwell GPU.

Hi, I've been been reading this thread for a few weeks now, great work by everyone :)
I'm still running a GX660r, and have ordered a 970m from rjtech, though sadly it's taking ages to get through customs over here (uk). I'm hoping to have it this week :) Got a modified 780 heatsink ready to go as per your first post. My current setup is a 920xm & 7970.
    Can't wait :)
