Which games are you noticing it? I get it bad on Far Cry 4 and Wolfenstien. @ 60fps every thing is smooth but anything below that and it stutters like a crack head. I also had this problem with the 870m I replaced so i don't think it's the 970m or the bios not playing well. It's also only those games.

    Hello Gentlemen!

Where is the cheapest place to buy the 980m these days? The original post link is up to over 700 bucks - is that the best price?

    Thanks!

For now that's the cheapest you can get the 980m for. No other place that I know of. If you come along a place where it costs lower let us know :)

check first your original bios. see if it boots to windows together with your new mxm gpu. If it boots under windows, check in device manager if it shows two display videocards. 1 is the Intel gpu and the other is the 9xxm card that has an exclamation point. from there you need a modified .inf driver. see page 1 on this thread and everything will run smooth. Otherwise if it got a conflicting hardware device , then i think you need to update your bios.

That happened to me before.. Are you using an msi vbios? if yes switch to clevo vbios and install nvidia drivers with modified .inf. that solved my problem.. And please put your hardware signature so we can know what your specs and give suggestions if you've got problem with your nb :)

Just an FYI - there's a way to blind flash a bios in the case of a bad flash. I can't remember whether I saw it on MSI's forum with a Svet post or if it was at Tech Inferno.

I don't know if it'll recover the EUFI brick that was mentioned earlier in the thread, but it may be worth a look. Might save a few weeks sending it back to MSI. Not much to lose at this point.

just to be clear., if the card is detected, i just need a modified .inf driver you said..,

but if didn't., i will need to update my Bios, right??

    my BIOS version: 16F3IMS.50R
    EC Version: 16F3EMS1 Ver5.03

btw, what's EC version and vBios does???
i've read some posts with problems with those...

I really could honestly be a placebo and in my head. It just feels different or something. After I got 144hz screen seeing frames feels different and smoother. It almost feels like at times I'm back on a 60hz screen and playing CS GO competitively like that sucks.

Anyways flashed back to unlocked Prema vBios and overclocked a bit more.

Overclock Core +230mhz, and Mem +400 @ 1.025v (may be able to go lower on this, haven't tested it yet). Max GPU Temp 69C.

    4900MQ @ 3.8ghz x4 and undervolted -80mV. Max CPU Temps 79C.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-4900MQ,Micro-Star International Co., Ltd. MS-16F4

Just 600 points off a stock 980m standard score

Correction now just 500 points off 980m standard score. :)

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-4900MQ,Micro-Star International Co., Ltd. MS-16F4

    GPU @ +270core and +400mem @ 1.037v. Max GPU temp 70C

CPU Same as above, Max CPU temps 80C.

    Edit:

Instead of creating yet another post, I'll just keep a running post of progress cranking this Maxwell beast to her limits.

    GPU @300core and +400mem @ 1.050v. Max GPU temp 74C

    CPU @ 3.7ghz X4, Max CPU temps 77C

http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/5677655 7912 Overall and 9192 Graphics. That puts me within just 400 points graphics of a stock 980m.

I plan to break through the 8k barrier by tonight and just keep pushing her up. I'll see how much more I can get at 1.050v. I don't feel very comfortable yet going much if any beyond that voltage. I suppose though its only 57mV above the stock Clevo settings.

    Actual gaming performance.

I did a test in BF4 ultra @+250core and +200mem and the difference between that and stock was 14 FPS. Pretty amazing gain in performance, and it was fully stable in a full server without any issues for over an hour of gameplay.

    Thanks Meaker!

Just go through 8k, but required a larger increase in voltage. I think I'm hitting the point of diminishing returns for increases in voltage though. It would also be a lot easier if I didn't have to run the dang demo every time before a bench. Really annoying. This is the limit I'm setting for myself at this point. I'm not pushing her any further just yet. I'll wait to see what some other users do and see what their findings are. I definitely won't be gaming at these clocks. I'll back it down to around 1.025v for gaming.

GPU Overclocked +350 core and +450 mem @1.075v GPU Max Temp 78C
    CPU 3.7Ghz X4. CPU Max Temp 78C.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-4900MQ,Micro-Star International Co., Ltd. MS-16F4

    GPU 9371 --according to notebookcheck.net just 220points shy of a stock 980m.

    Overall Firestrike Score of 8038

Just to remind you, at that voltage setting my 680m died out so fast on my oc.. you're melting something inside the chip. And when it shows some signs, believe me it's a permanent one. But why you're 970m eats alot of voltage compared to mine? .... btw... what vbios you using with that setting?

Well every card is different and some are just better overclockers and run at higher clocks with lower voltage. No overclocking is ever guaranteed.

Can you post some firestrike runs and clocks, with your voltages and temps required to hit those clocks?

    I am running Prema vBios.

I suppose if I end up killing the card, then that will just accelerate my departure towards my desktop build. I've got it all parted out and ready to hit buy, just want to make sure its the final build I want.

What is the default voltage of a 680m? The default voltage on the 970m is 0.993v on the stock Clevo vBios, so its not a crazy high voltage at 1.050v.

For normal gaming I am sticking with 1.012v with a +250 core overclock. Temps are good and this small change in voltage shouldn't hurt anything.

I've manage to run my 970m using prema vbios at it's default voltage ate .993v. it finished firestrike at 250 coreclock, 300mem clock. svl7 vbios voltage is much lower than this one just like with a stock clevo vbios.

I know the stock vbios of 680m is 1.00volts. then I've switched to 1.025v for a long time. To my eagerness I've tried the vbios with 1.050 volts. then after 2 weeks it passed away lol

I'm running my cards at 1.1v but the power circuitry on the two is different. Also I have taken care with the VRM cooling on my cards making sure the pads are making perfect contact.

Hey guys how do I install the drivers? My system detects the new card but Nvidia won't do the install so I've been trying to manual install, but I'm having trouble. So right now the card is in with no drivers. (980m MSI GT60 barebones 16f4)

It says it doesn't detect any valid hard ware to install the drivers for. My device manager only shows microsoft basic display adapter. However other software detects the 980m. So I need to somehow force it to allow me to install the drivers, idk I don't know what to do for this step.

Hey guys sorry I haven´t been on much lately ;-) So far my GTX980M is working great no overclocking done so far. Had only one problem that which happened cause of AV software messed up my drivers and HD graphics stopped switching to nVidia no matter how did you set up nVidia control panel. Done a clean install and everything went good!

So my recommendation for most of other guys willing to upgrade is to leave stock Clevo bios, disable driver signature and try to install normal drivers or modified ones from Talons first post if unmodified won´t work. If there are any problems do a clean install which should help in most cases.

Now to some public announcement :-D I got my hands on 9 pieces of Samsung 850 Pro 1TB SSD hard drives. They are under Samsung warranty for 10 years or 150TB written (that should be like 44GB per day for 10 year period). Warranty is applyed upon serial no. If anyone is interested I can post you link to ebay where I got them for 340GBP + postage 18GBP. I don´t know if it´s allowed to promote personal selling here on forum so can add it later or in PM. If anyone is interested just contact me ;-)

does anybody have a 980m firestrike score (no ooverclock)? I'm a bit addicted now and think a 980 would help more in games than a new processor.

Here's another Nvidia 346.87 driver for those nb's that uses modified .inf

Two new Notebook Drivers spotted .... - Guru3D.com Forums

and here's the modified .inf driver modified by myself.

    http://www.filedropper.com/nvam

    or

    http://s000.tinyupload.com/?file_id=61867516853049591046

just copy paste this modified .inf in this sample directory

    C:\346.87\Display.Driver

    And here's my firestrike result

    200x400.jpg

Afterburner is running fine here too!!! @ default voltag
    afterburner@200x400.jpg

The highest temp I got when running firestrike is 79C according to GPU'z. Is this temp good?

Although I don't know if DSR IS enabled. How to check it out?

Tell me people if you having trouble downloading the modified .inf. I'll send you one and give me your email add.

I finally sold my ultrabook, so I'm going to order the 970m today. I'm going to try to get a 3920XM paired with it as well since I'll have it apart.

What are you guys recommending for thermal paste? It's been awhile since I did a build, and Arctic Silver products were the rage then. :D

    Cool. I'll look into that.

Just ordered the vid card, and won an auction for a 3920XM. Hopefully I'll have everything I need to make the swap next weekend.

can anyone that has done the mod let me know if their Optimus is working. Mine is apparently only using 970 when it used to switch. red light always on.
