My bad. I believe everyone has been using NVFlash Utility. I've not done that. Perhaps someone else can help you.

Interesting in modding to a 980M and would love to see temps for gaming/under load with NO max fans please.
What thermal paste is the best that you guys use to keep temps lower?

I upgraded the proc in my NB so far from a 3630QM to a 3920XM and put Gelid Extreme on it. It seems to be doing quite well - especially considering I'm exceeding the TDP my laptop was rated for (45W and the 3920XM is 55W). I'm idling around27-28C and load got up into the low 40s. Haven't pushed it with gaming yet.

I'll also be putting it on the GPU when I get it fixed. Gelid's gotten really good reviews. A 4g tube will run you about $12.

Use HWInfo to check temps. For benchmarking. Everyone is using 3Dmark11 and firestrike.

I switched to the earlier NVidia driver 344.80 and have been able to stably overclock the 970M to the maximum allowed core overclock of +135 mhz.
On the memory side It was getting glitchy / funky at +700mhz so I took it back to +650Mhz on memory and it's totally stable.
New Firestrike score of 6800 without any voltage mod or anything else.
I was wondering about everyone's temps?
My idle temps are very low but in game or 3d mark mid 50's C and if I use the "Kombustor" MSI burn test I can easily get into the 80's C.
    How about everyone else?

    Good Luck Superguy!

I'm running with 344.80 drivers, and because the 970m runs so much cooler than my old 7970m Ive been leaving the fan to spin itself under load instead of me using the fan boost.

Ive just been playing Evil Within and the 970m (all stock) peaked at 72C and cpu (overclocked) 84C
The cpu temp is a few degrees lower than before, and the 970m is 10C lower than the ATI gpu.

I did try a quick over clock yesterday, +135 core and just +100 on the memory (I think). And scored 6474 in firestrike.

So far I'm extremely happy with the GTX970m :)

Alright guys, looks like I'm in business. I haven't run any benches on stock or anything, and I'm still running my original Windows 7 load. I may wipe the system later and see how it goes.

I'm using the 345.05 driver with modified INF.

I'll run some benchies in a bit. Gotta get the kids down.

    Here are a couple screenies:

Thanks guys. I ran Firestrike and I'm posting the result (can't upload a screenshot at the moment for some reason). This is all stock clocks on both proc and vid card. Am I where I should be?

Temps seem to be ok. CPU maxes at 72C, GPU maxes at 77C. Not bad considering the heatsink was a lot different than I expected it to be.

Interesting thing: HWInfo and 3DMark both report my vid card being MSI branded. I bought the Clevo one from RJ Tech ...

    3DMark Score 6169
    Graphics Score 7182
    Physics Score 9532
    Combined Score 2385

Superguy25 really glad you got your card fixed and working, when I read what happened I thought it was game over! Great to hear it's all sorted.

I'm not sure why I had such a nightmare getting the drivers installed on win 7 though! And unlike you guys my card reported by gpu-z is a Nvidia card, even though it's a Clevo bought from rjtech.

So which MSI Bios do I use for a 980M GTX?
The one for the GT72? GT60?
Don't want to mess with modded Bios and would prefer it stock from MSI since at most I would only have a slight OC on the GPU.Just want a simple plug and play without resorting to modded GPU drivers.
Do I update the Bios first and then install the GPU? Does it matter?
What thermal pads are best and what thickness do I get when replacing?
Is Mx-4 a good paste for the CPU and GPU? Gelid extreme? Any recommendations that's better then ICD7/24?
No collaborative liquid ultra since it seems like a pain to put on and take off. Trying to keep it simple. ;)
I figure if I'm going in might as well redo everything and get it out of the way.
    Thanks for this thread Talon!
I've been looking to get a new laptop with a 8GB GTX 980M for a while but nothing really jumped out at me without resorting to spending about 2 grand, little did I know it was right under my nose the whole time.
My GT60 with GTX 780M/i7-4800MQ combo is still running great but I'm getting the urge for a performance upgrade more so for the GPU then CPU . The 4800MQ is more than enough for my needs since most of the time I just game on it.
Sorry for all the questions but I just want to get it right will keeping it fairly simple.
    Thanks! :)

You cannot use Biosses of other type of laptops. Just the one for yours. (GT60) check your current BIOS and tell wich you have. If i remember right, a 4000 i7 mothberboard accepts a MSI VBIOS for the 980m and 970m. (i don't know if there is a 980M vbios anywere)

Correct me if i'm wrong guys...

Well I thought because the GT72 uses a 8GB GPU that's the one I might use... sorry clueless about these things.
Can someone tell me which BIOS do I use for a GTX 980M and where exactly do I download it?
    Directly from MSI?
    I noticed they use a 4GB GPU...would it matter?
Again sorry for all the dumb questions but I just want to get it right

No, haven't messed with the bios yet.

I noticed your score was significantly higher than mine. Any suggestions on tweaking?

I noticed there's some software that wasn't particularly happy after I swapped the cards - namely the .Net 4.x software. I may have to reload Windows (debating between keeping 7 and using 8.1 with the classic shell mods). I'll work on it over the next few days to see what I can get out of it.

Originally my nb is a GT60-ONC. So it means we both have a clevo vcard from rjtech. Funny it's reading MSI card too on my nb but when I update it to an original msi vbios and installed with an NVidia driver but it won't work. That's why I reverted to clevo vbios... anyway the vcard is working fine

Yeah, something like that. I'm getting weird bios info and stuff from my HWINFO64 though. It was reporting the Intel vBios info instead of 970's. I'm chalking that up to the system not being terribly happy with how the driver is working at the moment.

I screwed up a bit by not uninstalling the original driver at first. On first boot up, it freaked out once I got into Windows. I ended up booting into safe mode and uninstalling the driver. Tried the "normal" driver, and it wouldn't install. So I downloaded the modded NVAM.inf file, replaced that in the extracted folder and ran it again. It worked fine after that.

Some software hasn't been happy with the change, like the .NET framework and the KLM software. I'm thinking I'm going to reload Windows on it to clean everything up. There may still be some crap from the previous driver in there.

The reason why it is reporting intel vbios instead of 970m is because the primary graphics of our nb is intel hd4000 which is optimus based. Just click down the gpu and you'll see that the 970m is just on the dropdown list of the hwinfo gpu..

Regarding the ".net framework", you need at least framework version 4 and up. find and install it.

Yeah, it was installed. It's something I've always installed as part of my load. It started having problems after I uninstalled the Nvidia driver. So I'm guessing it didn't uninstall as cleanly as I thought.

google "Display Driver Uninstaller". I've been trying different versions of NVidia drivers, and when I find a good one I post it here together with the modified .inf file for ivy bridge and older models. Although I don't know if people here are downloading the link I posted together with the modified ".inf".

Anyways use "Display Driver Uninstaller" so you you'll have a fresh install of your NVidia drivers and can try old and new versions alike.

Maybe you could tell us more about the premamod vbios and what other settings besides core / memory overclock that you did?
Did you change other settings as well in the 71X bios?

Also, I noticed Omega was in Prema's thread and tried the Premamod bios.
Maybe he could weigh in on this?

Do we need yet another modified inf file to install?

Just another question ... was anyone able to get the SSE working on the older GT60/GT70s (i.e. Ivy Bridge generation)?

I believe mine only works because they sell a GT60/970m combo. I'm not sure they sell a GT70 980m combo.

When the software it runs some sort of check to see what laptop you have, if your laptop model is on the list then it passes the check and allows the software to work.

After I installed my 970m my GT60 still reported as a 2OD model. I updated my BIOS and now it reported as a GT60 2QD, and I figured this might make SSE work. I tried and yes it worked but lacked functionality. I did the update to the latest EC version, and viola SSE working as it should. Hope this helps.

I just ordered a MSI GT70 2PC-1468US Nb. It has the gtx 870m. I won't ask if this mod will work since I scanned every comment for the last hour and I assume all will be well. When I finish this mod, will I need to add additional ram to the existing 8gb's? Once I purchase the gtx 970m, how fast do you believe my 870m will sell?

It's a supply and demand thing and a little luck, nobody can tell you how fast your 870M will sell.
Put it on the NBR marketplace and go from there.
Can anyone point me to which BIOS to update too from MSI if I want to add a 980M?
There are just too many models and its a bit confusing.
    Thanks

Judging from your specs you have the GT60 2OD.

    http://www.msi.com/support/nb/GT60_2OD.html#down-bios&Win8.1 64

If you haven't updated your system BIOS in awhile, then the safest route/required route is to update to version 50v first. Obviously download the RAID or NON RAID version depending on if you're running RAID or not.

Then download and update to the latest version 51x, again raid or non raid.

Follow MSI PDF on that page to the T. If you don't follow instructions you could easily brick your system and it would require you to send it in for RMA.

After you update to this version, your laptop will support the 980m out of box and will not require any sort of modded drivers.

Mine worked. I'll post a pic of my heatsink. It's from a 675m.

Still needed to be dremeled in the same spot.
