I am stuck on if I want to do this upgrade or get a new updated notebook. I have the skill and know-how so what do you suggest? I would likely get a newer release with a 970M/980M if I do upgrade, though I was wanting the GS30 but I still do a lot of gaming on the couch.

I spoke with Svet, he says that both bios versions of .51X and .71X are aavailable for either 16F3 system or 1762 but only to a retail one, since my system is barebone of 1762 - applying this bios version to it would be "cross flashing", and should I opt to do that then I am doing it at my own risk.

Would any of you happen to know anyone that have flashed either .51X or .71X on a barebone 1762 system?

As i said, fin area and airflow. Pressure can have an impact yes, though airflow in is always the same as airflow out, you are not destroying or creating air with a fan ;)

Well, the air pressure thing is more relevant to multi fan(s) situations, mostly in desktop computers, for example: if you have 5 intake fans (fans that bring air to the pc's case) and only 2 outtake fans (that remove air from the case) and they are (for this examples purpose) of similar module and thus are of the same size and move the same amount of air, then you are creating a positive (which is not good) air pressure inside the case, if the situation was reversed (2 intake, 5 outtake, similar specs) you would be creating negative pressure, which isn't good either, optimal situation is exactly the same volume of air is trying to get in and exactly the same volume is trying to get out.
having one fan that is both the intake and outtake is the ultimate way of doing this.

    and on that topic:
Does anyone know if the fan of our systems is the same as the GT72's fans? Have anyone ever seen the official specifications for our fans? (current, volt, ampere, cfm, air pressure, min-max rpm, dBa ratings)?

Perhaps MSI improved the fan's design and kept the exact physical dimensions and thus swapping our fan with the one found in a GT72 could result in superior cooling? (not that there is anything wrong with the way things are at the moment =p)

The gt72 fan is single outlet though the gt80 fans are similar but I don't think they are hugely different

    1) Do you know what is the difference between .70X to .71X?
    2) :> What Firestrike(3dmark13's) score do you get out of your system? (also which CPU do you have?)
    3) Where did you get that bios from?

Thanks, looked him up, he's exact words were:
While I don't actually know what the "/x" parameter for flashing is (never saw such a thing in msi's flashing tool) .. it does sound like everything works =)

Ok guys for now I have this to share :D
I'll post all the steps I took to install the card along with pics. Just need some free time from work :p
    For @Talon:

    GT60-2OD (GT60-2QE now ;))
    BIOS: E16F6IMS.717
    EC: 16F4EMS1.516
VBIOS: like that on the pic, Clevo one (no need to mod drivers)

@felix3650 Awesome news man! Glad it works fine, and you were able to complete the mod without issues. Looking forward to any additional details/photos you can provide for other modders.

@omega939 Still rocking 344.75 as they allow me to overclock and have had zero issues with any games. When Nvidia releases their new drivers that again enable overclocking I figure I'll update then.

SSE working for me too and you were correct, backlight brightness has increased. I'd say it's 30% brighter than with KLM and more uniform. Some darker spots I had before are now evenly illuminated!

I'll try doing it in the free time I (hope) to have this week. Work's been taking almost 70% of my time. The rest is dedicated to sleeping and eating (ofcourse :p)..

Hey guys. I just bought a MSI 970m. With a 780dxr ( 1761 ) if i understand this well, my card won't boot on windows because it's not a haswell cpu. Am i right ?
But does it still boot on a usb drive ( i mean bios and everything before windows ) so i at least can flash my card with a clevo vbios in dos mode ? Or do i have to do this as a blind flash ?
Little lost in this matter. Ty in advance.

As Meaker said, Nvidia Inspector is definitely the best for overclocking with the unlocked vBios. I usually overclock with NI, but I also use Afterburner running in the background as it supports my On Screen Display. I'm a bit obsessive and always have my clocks and temperatures displayed in all games I play. I always need to know what is going on with the system and like being able to make sure everything is AOK.

I keep and ear and an eye out for mine, if it makes strange noises or performs unexpectedly then I pull up the monitoring, otherwise it would distract me from the experience.

If any of them fits to an older system, it would be interesting to see different messuremants, perhaps there is some gain to be made there.
If its not the same exact fan it really can go either way, with either the newer system seeing an improvement from the old system's fan or the old system seeing an improvement from the new system's fan (which is the more likely outcome)

If anyone here have connections to someone within MSI, than please ask for the detailed specifications of their fans (CFM rated air flow, air pressure, volt/amper requirements and anything else that they can provide)

Is there a good how to for Nvidia Bios flashing? Any recommended bioses? Like the Prema or something? This is an area I don't know a whole lot about. Anytime I mucked with a video bios, it was always on an ATI card.

Svet has made his tool perfect to be used to flash VBIOS because he contributed a lot of time testing/verifying so it is actually highly recommended to use his tool other than manufacture's tool.

Put these files under "Display.Drivers" to your extracted nvidia driver and replace the old files and you are ready to install it.. http://s000.tinyupload.com/index.php?file_id=57030659014350032720
Just explore the inf files and you can fiddle so many things :D

But hmm, that still doesn't answer the "why?" part (well, other than being cool =p), does it enables anything that wasn't previusly posible with the 970m? Any sort of advantage?

Did a quick run of Dying Light. This is after installing the 980m and using ICD7 and Phobya XT pads on both CPU and GPU. And no turbofan :)
With the previous 780m it would get up to 92° same settings (all maxed out btw) and 88° for the CPU. I don't have pics for that but whoever does have (or had) the card knows what I'm talking about ;)
Regarding FireStrike scores, I'm downloading 3DMark now so I should have it ready in the coming days. Unfortunately I didn't run it on the 780m but you can compare scores with other people who did benchmark. I'm more of a game tweaking guy than a benchmarker :p

He tricked the drivers into detecting a 980 instead of a 970m so as to enable OC. Modding the infs at card description sections does the trick (associating the 970m HWID to a 980) ;)
Just as Meaker told you, Nvidia did step back on it's decision and decided to re-enable OC on their next driver update.

Well the 970m is tested on a barebone with the correct BIOS, 51x I think it was. The 980m I don't know, it could work seeing that the 900m series has a high compatibility so far :)

New question: When plugging in an HDMI I get a weird problem. At a random interval (sometimes 5 min, sometimes over an hour) the Gaming Center will read my GPU temp as 255c and ramp the fan all the way up. Other monitoring programs will still read the correct temp and performance is not affected, but the only way to reset the fan is to unplug the HDMI cord and close what ever program was using the Nvidia GPU. A quick internet search shows I am not the only one with this problem, but no one seems to have a solution. I have all the latest drivers/bios/EC firmware. Anyone have any ideas? This happened with both my 870m and my new 970m.

Just found out that we can all enable DSR (Dynamic Super Resolution: 4K-Quality Graphics On Any HD Monitor)
via this tool that is found here:
    http://gamenab.net/2015/02/26/big-news-dsr-patch-available/

I am sure that the above is just an automated way of doing it ... and that there's a manual way of achieving the same thing, that however is outside of my scope of knowledge...

Can anyone with 980M or 970M try this thing out and provide feedback about the quality of life of this thing? (like, does it butcher your frame rate super bad? does it even look any better than stock?)

    * Isn't that website the same one that claimed that gsync is a software based solution and then later got shutdown by nvidia's layers?

EDIT: Note that as the link in that post leads (hard link) to an exe file .. it might trigger your AV (did trigger my avast) but post download (had to disable the av) I scanned the file both with avast and malwarebytes and .. seems to be fine.
However testing DSR on 680m is .. a little silly :| not like I'm swimming in excessive frames as is (in new titles..)

    Hello!

I have the same issue. What operation system you have W8 or W7? I have W7.
For connecting external monitor and normal work with 970M - connect to D-SUB (VGA). In my case it resolve issue.

Hopefully this advice may help someone who plans to upgrade to the 9xxm series. I apologize in advance if this were previously talked about on the 65 pages of comments on this thread prior to this comment and if so, please just let me reiterate...The 970m that I ordered from RJtech arrived fitted with an x clamp on the bottom side of the pcb and underneath the gpu chip. This clamp has a very strong adhesive attaching it to the board. I carefully used a plastic spudger around the edges and gently pushed the clamp up through each screw hole, one at a time, making space between the clamp and the board, prying with the spudger until finally the glue released. Once I freed the board, I used 91% isopropyl alcohol to clean up the leftover glue. I hope this helps someone. It truly was the most painstaking part of the mod. All else is a cake walk.

DSR is not working in Win 8.1. I know DSR only works with Win 10 though... When installing that app, It made my 970m warmer by more than 10 to 15 degrees celcius on idle.

I'm on Windows 8.1. The trouble is I would like to hook up my laptop to my television in order to play games like I'm on a console, it's just way easier with HDMI.

85C is built into the vbios I believe, however if you are having an issue with the fan you can see if Svet's editor goes back that far if you want to change the profile, or you could use the community fan software to set it each boot.

Just to reply to this. I put a 970m with MSI GT72 Vbios inside my 780dxr ( sandy bridge ) and it works fine. No need to mod drivers or anything. It's all plug and play.
So i guess omega is right for IB, but for SB no problems.

Max temp after 30mn of furmark : 74c.
