I have a GT72s that came with a 970m, I upgraded it with a 980m pulled from a GT72 and it works fine.
BUT even at stock clocks it will not run at full boost clocks for very long, checking with GPU-Z the reason is "PerfCap 16" witch means it doesn't have enough power, can anyone elaborate on why this would happen is it some kind of BIOS limitation?
(note I didn't see any power limitations when it ran in the GT72, both have the 230w PSU). -

@majoho - Possibly the vBIOS is the common denominator. Your brick isn't exhibiting any unusual behavior, is it?

^ I already donated to Svet and had him do the BIOS for the 970m, honesty it didn't work well for me my card couldn't overclock much more than without the unlock, basically it would lock up the computer.
Also it's not that the card is throttling, it just can't stay at max boost - it's not really a big deal but I just found it odd that it would happen without even oc'ing. -

try updating the vbios of your 980 to premas vbios. Have you done this? THis is his website www.premamod.com
-
^ they aren't for MSI so I don't feel like doing that aside from that there doesn't seem to be a 4GB version.
I didn't request a vbios for the 980m it's on the stock vbios.
Again it's no big deal, maybe there is a lock in the laptop bios that limits the power delivery to the GPU or something.
This is my Firestrike result I think it's ok http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/11247727? -

Thanks for the input. -
I have a GT780dxr-095us with the 570m. I think the GPU is on its way out. i get random reboots and i have little green dots on the screen, that go away when im booting up but as soon as the GPU kicks on theres like 7 green dots in a row all over the screen about an inch away from each other. I would love to upgrade to a 970m or 980m. Is that possible for this laptop? Ive looked all over but i keep reading conflicting info. seems like it wasnt possible at first but now is?? Thanks for the help

Hi
Can anyone help me?
I've currently got an MSI GT70 2QD which currently has a Nvidia GTX970M card inside, the question is can I install a Nvidia GeForce GTX 980M 8GB DDR5 card inside of my machine without doing any mods to the driver?
If so is it just as simple as swapping out the card and installing all necessary drivers or are there any drivermods I need to be aware of?
If someone could get back to me to let me know that would be great..... -

This is VBIOS and driver database issue. So the VBIOS in that card (if not from MSI) needs to be flashed to MSI-version in order for the Nvidia driver to load. -
Hi There
Thanks for getting back to me, do you happen to have a step by step process as to how to flash the 980M card?,I've never done it before but I assume it's easy - apologies as this is all new to me.... -
Maybe I found a sollution to your problem, I was working in a way to don't need modded drivers in our systems.
Unfortunatelly It didn't work.
But, from this sad result I got something interesting...
In my system I got the Optimus working again.
Before this I had the very same problem that you have reported some pages before.
My FAN used to get 100% rotation even if the temps were below 60ºC, and my power LED was always orange...
This hapended to me since I replaced my 670M by the 980M.
With the help of @omega939 I could test that both cards (970M and 980M) would work with the INF mod I discovered.
I've attached 2 modded INFs (version 364.51) to the device ID you told Omega939.
These INF files work for GTX 970M (110C) and the GTX 980M (110B).
Please, try it and tell me if it worked to you.Attached Files:

Something is brewing up in regards with the PnP Nvidia drivers of Maxwell GPUS for Ivy Bridge nb owners. In the mean time sit back relax and enjoy the ride

I've created a vBIOS mod that allow Ivy Bridges to install standard drivers.
Check it out!

Hi, I'm new to the site and I have a question. I did some digging with search, but the only information I could find was back in 2014. I'm wondering if things have changed for my upgrade options by this point.
I have the MSI GT70-ONC which has the GTX-670MX. I'm wondering what I can upgrade to with the minimum physical work necessary. I'm not unwilling to do work, but I figure the more work I do the higher the risk of failure. I also don't want to overstress my laptop's power supply.
The laptop is finally starting to feel a bit dated - newer games running at 20 or less fps on low settings. Just trying to get some more life out of it without replacing it.
If it's already been answered please just point me in the right direction, and if you need more information from me just let me know.
Thanks! -
About the power brick there's room to your system to run both cards without any trouble. -
As for the heatsink - not sure where to obtain that, or even what to look for. Do you mean to say I can find one that doesn't require modding, as per your original post?
Anyways thanks for the quick reply to a question that's probably been asked dozens of times.
*edit*
I found this one from upgrademonkey, seems like it's specifically for MSI. Would that be the right way to go?

Ah nevermind, it clearly says in the sale page it needs to be modded too. I'm guessing they just have several listings under various laptop brands to get more search hits.Last edited: Mar 25, 2016 -
Your GT70 don't have the cooler boost 2, which has the thermal bridge between CPU and GPU.
You can find one easily, I got mine in eBay.
About the board, RJ Tech has lower price if you can buy with them.
http://rjtech.com/shop/index.php?dispatch=products.view&product_id=30303
I bought mine on RJ Tech. -
Is this the correct heatsink? It's the only one I could find that looked right.

That looks like it, but the laptops with Cooler Boost 2 have a CPU heatsink with two threaded holes for the bracket that reaches over to the CPU from the GPU. I can only speculate if yours has that.
-
That's it!! that gpu heatsink give's a much cooler temp for the gpu

Excuses me , I'm an msi user from Vietnam and my model is MSI GT 70 2OC .May I ask that it's possible for my laptop to upgrade VGA to 970,980 or any higher VGA than my current 780M. If yes, Could anyone please tell me where and how can I change my VGA in Vietnam because I think it's impossible for me to do it myself
. Thanks for reading

this vbios works like charm
no need for inf mode
drivers can be installed from geforce experience or just dl + install latest drivers
everything works perfect

Sorry buddy, but I'm not skilled enough to mod system BIOS.
Probably our 51X/71X didn`t have the ID generator, which newer systems may have.
In anyway Omega, I know that this procedure is not the ideal, because we need to mod the vBIOS, but it will work until MSI remove the ID we are using from Verde program.
I believe that this is not going to happen, so lets say that this is a permanent fix.samXLR likes this. -
So wait, is there a chance that NV will one day remove the hardware ID that you used from the new drivers and then this drivers wont work on our machines? wouldn't that also render all other 980M MSI computers from working? (newer gt72\gt70\gt60\gt80 etc) -

https://blogs.nvidia.com/blog/2010/...rivers-redefining-the-notebook-pc-experience/
It is free enrollment for manufacturers but some did not choose to enroll in it thus why those IDs don't get official driver support. -
Did MSI participate? seeing drivers working for retail models means .. they are in, no?
Did Clevo participate? if you install clevo card in clevo computer, can you also install drivers without inf mode?
this entire thing is pure software issue and purely premeditated, i bet nvidia can flick its fingers and in a matter of 30seconds all drivers will contain all neccery IDs and everything would work fine nativly on all systems no mods required.
the entire thing smells like the game is rigged against the costumers.
I am just glad we have people like:
@Svet - that enables unlocking the bios
@Prema - that enables OC the gpu
@DMTwo - that removes the need for INF mod
@Mr. Fox - that pushes the limits of this systems (and then writes about it for us to droll over =p)
@Talon - for managing community thread to foster knowledge
@omega939 - for being a vessel of information sharing
Like seriously, where would we be without this key people :X
with god damn unupgradeable laptops, thats where.
Thank you our champions!DMTwo likes this. -
Because of this, I believe that this is not going to happen.
The incompatibility issue it's only present in Ivy Bridges and below, to 4th gen and newer models it's just flash a MSI vBIOS and everything will work fine. -
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
Stock MSI GPUs are supported, and the same for ASUS.
But in some cases, their newly released GPUs may not receive support right away and you may have to wait for a quarter or two to receive the actual support. -
Hardware ID is important I think. Because how can you install a driver without knowing the proper ID for that videocard?
@Sam
Thanks for the compliment. We are all helping each other to make our nb give it's best performance against newer nb's. This GT60 that I bought wayback 2012 is still kicking @ss compared to newer ones.
That's why I don't see yet to find myself buying a new nb.. Unless GT62 comes out. Now that is another story (Desktop CPU + mxm GPU) I hope when MSI makes an official release with this model, they update the gpu to an mxm Desktop. -
Clarify, please.
On page 1 of the thread, Talon's 1/15/2015 update states that with the newest MSI BIOS (on his Haswell GT60-2OD) allows the 970M and 980M to use any vBIOS version on the vid cards with no requirement for modded drivers, yet I still see lots of posts here asking for help with .inf mods. Are the guys asking for help just using an older machine with a BIOS that does not support this 'universal vid card' thing?
Looking to upgrade my GTX 770M to a 970M on my GT70-2OC (1763 board), but not interested in fooling with modding driver .inf files every time I upgrade the drivers.
So, can someone set me straight as to whether Talon's post is strictly accurate? -
As I understand GT60/70 machines with haswell (4th gen intel core i7) processors using the latest bios, no longer require specific vbios to be recognized or work, so it works with any drivers and/or vbios.
Users with 3rd or 2nd Gen CPUs might still require modded inf, but seeing the new threads from DMtwo and Omega make it so that you can change your hardware ID and thus not require modded inf? -
The 4th gen and forward don't need modded drivers, it works perfectly.
For users with 3th gen below it's necessary to use modded drivers.
Since I've upgraded my GT60, I was fighting against the need of modded drivers.
It took me sometime but now it's working like a stock configuration, in the same way the 4th gen forward works.ryzeki likes this. -
previously, no matter which vbios I used, without inf modding, drivers wouldn't install.
Maybe things would have worked differently if my GPU was made by MSI but as is, no matter the vbios, inf modding was required, and either I am not too good at it or that theres some limitation as not every single version of drivers would work, sometimes everything will install successfully yet optimus wouldn't engage and the only working gpu would be the integrated intel hd4000.
Now that I have installed @DMTwo 's vbios, and that my gpu's hardware ID changed, all drivers work, no modding required, no need to disable driver signature, even geforce experience is able to update drivers effortlessly. -
Thanks for clearing that up. Much appreciated.
Edit: looking at available cards, I see a few that are labeled as 'G-Sync enabled'. I have a rudimentary understanding of G-Sync, but I don't know if that feature applies to the onboard monitor, or to an external monitor. Bottom line is: are these cards usable in systems such as mine? (see sig for specs)Last edited: Mar 31, 2016 -

I assumed that the feature would be useless on my current system. I suppose I was thinking about whether the vBios could be flashed to a non-G-Sync vBios and then utilized in my system.

OK. got it. But something I haven't seen mentioned...is Optimus working properly? I use the laptop away from the charger a lot, and having it run constantly on the GPU doesn't sound very attractive to me. Conversely, I'd like to know that the iGPU let's go and hands over to the GPU when it should.
Also, RJTech has better than 1/2 a dozen part numbers listed for the 970M. Someone said that the P3xxx ones meant a little easier install. So...ordering the "P377SM-A 1st Video Card without Heatsink" is a good choice? If not, what are others ordering from RJTech that works well? -
