Eh bro, How many wattage does a 970m consumes if you limit your 980m to 70 watts only? what happened to your card if you limit that to 70 watts? Performance issues?

She throttle, the MHz decrease to keep the power under the profile I set.

    I monitor it using HwInfo.
Before these issues have started my GTX 980M could achieve up to 120W of maximum and 100W continuously.
Now, she can achieve up to 75W of maximum and 70W continuosly.

The performance is lower than the maximum I got when she was new, but my gameplay is much more smooth and rarely I got the power loss issue.

The GTA V for example, I set it to default (High/Ultra) I got 45FPS as average, 25-30FPS minimum and sometimes fixed 60FPS (usually inside places).

Before I mod the power I used to got similar results, but much hotter than today.
We are in summer here in Brazil and my hottest temps these days don't go further than 85°C, I could easily get 92°C before this mod.

In my case less Watts in GPU gave me a much better performance (consistent), of course the GPU could give me more, but the motherboard is getting old and tired, so it's better to just keep the system running without issues.

I ended up having SVET mod my vBIOS and all is well!

Now I'm just waiting on the slow boat from Taiwan to get my new heatsink here. I'm a bit leary of really pushing the card with my modded heatsink. I only did the minimal amount of clearancing and really should mount it up in the mill to clean off the other pads that are in the wrong positions, but haven't had the time.

Sorry Bro, Your vBIOS is modded by Prema, the Maxwell tool can't edit the values in these files, I only know how edit stock vBIOS.
If you want to go back to the regular vBIOS with modded power, tell me what version do you want and I do it for you.

Thread should be changed : "The Official MSI GT60/70 970m/980m/ 1060m Upgrade Thread"
I don`t know if you know however gtx 1060 (msi) works perfect in 16f3/16f4/1762/1763. Best compatible heatsink is from gtx 460m/560m ;]. Temperatueres are much better than on 980m. Performance up to 10% faster than 980m.

Do you mean LVDS(Low-voltage differential signaling) versus EDP(Embedded DisplayPort)?
Apparently the pascal cards are not compatible with LVDS the 980M is the last one that supports it. Not sure.

It works on some revision of gtx 1060. You can read on techinferno.
I had 2 x gtx1060. One works ok optimus works well and fps was good on lcd panel from laptop. Second one it had to be plugged hdmi connector - external monitor to get good fps on internal lcd panel - laptop.

Very interesting thread. So it appears the MSI GT60/70 barebones laptops can be upgraded to the 970m/980m/1060m cards. I purchased a FORCE / MSI 1763 (22-001) 780M (MSI GT70 BAREBONES) laptop back in 2013 from XoticPC and was told there are no upgrade options available from their company for my system. Is the 1080M a possible DIY upgrade, and if so, what vendor could one purchase the card and compatible heat sink from? I'd greatly appreciate Talon's feedback on whether this upgrade is possible for me given my setup.

Are you sure the 1080M is too large? The 780M is also quite a large card. The MSI GT70 is a larger laptop, not one of the slim ones. I am more concerned about additional power draw.

is your nb GT70-ivy bridge? and can you give me a link in other forums other than here and tech inferno that they have details of gtx1060 that is installed properly on their GT60 nb's with guide and photos? In tech inferno it's only benchmark results and they didn't tackle thoroughly the procedure though.

Thanks for your VERY helpful photo of the 1070 in the GT70, majster msi! My GT70 is also a Haswell so it is great to know the size dimensions. It looks like the 1060 is the best option for our laptops, since both the 1070 and 1080 are roughly the same size.

Hey guys hoping i can just get a quick answer. My buddy has MSI GT780 DXR MS-1761, 2nd gen i7, w 570m 1.5 uses HM67 chipset.

We would like to upgrade GPU, the simplest option and avoid editing gpu bios file. From what i see an MSI 770m 3gb will drop in and use same heatsink? Or do we require a 675m/680m heatsink? Is the 770m best option. Seems to me it is as welk as best sweet spot price wise.

Next a 970m 6gb will work i understand, what heatsink is required to mod?

Last does this unit take 1866ddr3 or is 1600 its max? Greatly appreciate a quick reply. We plan to raid a pair of ssd's and max his ram out to 32gb , he uses Win 10 and this will help his video editing.

For GPU, please wait for others who can reply you on that.
Regarding memory speed, DDR3-1333 is the max speed the processor can support, both Intel and MSI's spec page says the same thing.

The cpu he has in his unit is the i7 2630, overclocking the memory in bios is available I believe, , many are saying they are running 1600 and even 1866 if bios offers a memory proifile setting or if it supports pnp, I realize on MSI site it says 1333, but i know that many times one can surpass what they state, we want to max the unit out with a fresh overhaul as he is willing to spend a bit of coin on it to upgrade gpu and ram and slam a couple ssd's into it in raid 0

You can put in 1866MHz but it will run at slower speed so it's the same as using 1333MHz. This product was created from the time when overclocking on notebooks wasn't really much of action.

Yes I am aware of that if one stays on stock bios installing faster ram will do nothing except revert to the 1333 limit but there is a bios available at tech inferno that unlocks the hidden features and supports memory greater than 1333, the unit is capable to run 2133 using 2 dimms or even 1866 2 dimms with this bios flash.

Based on the identical laptop and user feedback/comments it appears the people have been successful w 2133 but then again it is all a crap shoot. Have we even tried, no, don't have the ram yet, thus the point of my post obtaining info and asking probing questions

greatly appreciated, i have not been able to d/l that modified bios as any new forum member there needs a week wait and 5 posts, I have the posts but not the time and I have not looked to see if the same bios file is available on this forum yet. I am just trying to help a buddy extend some life in his 780DXR, I am using a GT72 2QE and awaiting a reply from MSI on the trade up or possibly just keep and do a 1070 swap later. The one thing I would like is nvme support which I do not have or DDR4 support. I have been looking around for a good tutorial or detailed guide to replacing the factory 1600 DDR3 I have under the keyboard, I would like to install 1866 or 2133

Or just update the first page with 1060 instruction and title for the GT60/70 seeing how there's already a ton of information in this thread on this subject.

Can you please write out step by step how you managed to upgrade your GT70 to a 1060? Did you update the Bios and Firmware? If so what version? Did you modify your original heat sink? If you did can you show up some clear pictures?
Lets us know the current and previous software updates ie(windows OS, Bios, Firmware) that were made step by step, so we can all understand the right step to follow.
My video shows step by step procedure on upgrading a GPU from 770m/780m to 900 series.

Lets us know what you did. Thanks

Unlocked BIOS will allow you to overclock but the result isn't guaranteed. So if you can get the BIOS then your mileage will still vary.

When is someone going to do a FULL write up on how to upgrade a GT60/70 to 1060 with step by step instructions?
Is this a simple case of plug and play or mod the heatsink first and plug and play.
Alot of people are interested in this. Someone should please say something

I, too, am interested in seeing a step-by-step write-up on how to upgrade a GT60/70 to a 1060. I will most likely purchase a 1060 and undertake the procedure myself after viewing said write-up. I believe an upgrade from a 780M to a 1060 will be a great improvement for my laptop.

I no longer am in the GT60 game and haven't had it for a couple of years at this point.

Any remaining GT60 owners need to pick up the torch so to speak and can either create a write up/thread of their own or an add it here and I will have the main title modded and will add it to the first post. I just don't feel it's fair I offer advice or incorrect info in the first post seeing as I would be in the blind on the issues.

What makes this community great is owners sharing experiences and knowledge gained through their own experimentations. The GT60 should work with the gtx 1060 and would be an excellent choice to extend their laptops a couple more years at least.

I am trying to find out if a Sandy bridge based GT780 DXR which normally runs 1333 DDR3 with a bios flash available on the forum which unlocks overclocking features will run ddr3 1600. I am not interested in overclocking the cpu at all, I am trying to find out whether the modified bios available for MS-1781 will allow one to run faster memory. I am planning to drop in a 770M GTX, assisting a friend

I agree with you. I saw some people did with their GT 72 and 60 with haswell and ivy bridge with setup and posted their fire strike results on the other website. But it's still is unclear on how they did it.

Hi buddyes! gt 1060 Upgrde succes! And its so amazing cooler and powerfull. With i7 3630qm i have 9250 points on fire strike (last update) with stock clocks!

This is not posible without help of Svet!

If anyone wants to upgrade here is my steps. First of all whe need 1c60 card. Eactly with this ID NVIDIA_DEV.1C60.11FF.1462

1- Flash unlocked bios and t.24 EC ( thanks to Svet)

2-Install your OS with Legacy boot, here with windows 10 pro LEgecy, maybe needs to convert storage to MBR

3-Update intel chipset and VGA drivers to last release

4-Mod last Nvidia drivers, nvmii and dispi needed, thanks to Svet!!

5-Boot with driver enforcment disabling ( hold Mayus key when push Restart button, i think option 7)

    6-Install modded drivers

    7-Enjoy !!!!!

After a lot of test, everithing works includes keyboard colors, only cant regulate brightness but its for EC. In battlefield 1 its runs with Auto Fans and really quiet, stays at 75Cº. With turbo fan on, stays at 63cº!!!! Amazing!!

Wow it's really happening. Congrats indeed :D I'm very tempted as I got the GTX 870M for almost three years. Would be superb to upgrade from it to the GTX 1060. How much does the GTX 1060 cost for you? Have you modified the previous heat sink of your laptop and such in terms of hardware mod? Any extra info would be great :)

Nice upgrade. But my appetite has grown to replace my GT70 with a GT73VR 1080 if I could find it here under the current e3500 (!) price tag.

Card cost me 650€ with tax and dutys and express shipment from china (one week). Its to bit expensive but 980m cost the same and 970m unde 200 but i think its best relation of perf./cost . I modd 675m plate for testing pruposes but i plain buy a 560m heatsink 16f2 (really cheap, 15€) for a propper mod and adjustment. This card its a bit diferent of other cards and wee need to grind one of corners to close of screw for good adjusting surface.

    Only have three minor issues.

    1. Vsync allways on fixed to 60.9. Not a major issue for me.====> FIXED! Intel ****ing Vsync!!
    2. Only have two monitor outputs. I try with a lot of configurations and only or two monitors or laptop + monitor. No surround or Matrix dysplay. Its a major issue for me
    3. A lot of options of dysplay driver cant found, only have 3dconfig option. Not a major issue for me

Two last days i test Bf1 ( runs really smooth, fixed by vsync on 60fps on ultra settings, really good performance and temps (75cº on auto mode), dirt rally (little bit imput lag related by vsync wit g27), witcher 3 ( ultra presst 60fps (vsync on) and Star Cityzen (50 fps on hangar on ultra, 23 to 28 on PU) im really impresed.

My friend have a gt72 with 1060 and performance its really close, by 400 points on fire strike (i7 6700hq vs i7 3630qm) and same fps except when vsync limits.
