But im very happy to hear the new 1070m is something i can look into in a couple years when they drop in price. Or is the 1070m to much TDP??

Gentlemen, I've ran into the problem with my 970m upgraded on GT70...

So, everything was working like a charm. And I decided to upgrade to Windows 10. Did clean install, latest drivers. The GPU got recognized without trouble... and see below o_O. Any ideas? That looks like some sort of sync problem... Either Win 10 or new drivers or it managed to burn while I reinstalled the system? Any help would be appreciated much...

Hey Adriano, I might have ran into the same issues... Did anything change since your post? Or are you basically on Win 8 still?

Can anyone tell me if the GTX 780M from an ASUS G750 will work in my MSI GT70 that has a bad NVIDIA GTX 780M? The part numbers are different...

My MSI card has part # N14E-GTX-A2 MS-1W0C1

    The Asus has part # 60NB0180-VG1040 69N0PCV10D00-01

    Thanks.

The issue with Asus cards is often the shape. Asus typically doesn't use a standard shaped MXM card, so they won't fit in an MSI laptop.

    I'd seriously look at getting a 970m.

@panamaniacs2011 If you look back even on this thread there has been reports of success Upgrading GT60/GT70's to a Pascal GTX 1060 a user called majster msi even tried placing a GTX 1070N in a GT70 chassis but the tab on the GPU blocked the upgrade which would mean modding the chassis to make it fit. GT60/GT70 have always been if you can upgrade one you can upgrade the other as only the size of the laptop was the changing factor.

So go back a few pages, there is truth in the GTX1060N working in the GT60/GT70 so long as the CPU is IVY or Haswell.

I went through many pages but couldn't find the answers...

My current problem is that during FurMark the frequency doesn't go above 744 mhz and power limitations are the apparent cause.
I know in games it should be able to clock higher but I don't like being bottlenecked.

First question: Is it possible to run the Prema vbios on the MSI 970M 6gb? (1462 1141)
Or does someone have an already have a modded bios they are willing to share.

What I am really after is just undervolting and removing power limitations, not overclocking(yet).
I tried it myself in the maxwell bios tweaker but I really need (970m/980m) reference material.

Any help and pointer are appreciated (I know tech inferno but I don't have an account)

You need vbios to unlock power limits. Just be careful because removing power limits takes away, immediately, all the power efficiency of maxwell. You will now have a way hotter GPU for almost any given task.

Also, don't use furmark. It is a useless test that puts an unrealistic load on the GPU, and has been power limited since Kepler GPUs or perhaps even fermi. GPUs know they are running furmark and thus run at lower clocks on this specific test.

Use vbios to unlock the power of your GPU if you plan to tweak and overclock, but don't do it because of furmark.

I am sure you could ask some whom owns a GT70 or GT60. I would imagine that its a simple case of pulling your old mxm card, a mod to the heatsink to make it flush with the mxm module. Else its the same as upgrading to the 970m or 980m

So does anyone successfully run 970m in GT70 laptop with Windows 10? If so - did you update vBIOS for it? (mine works with win 8.1, but in Win 10 I get artifacts in games)

Have you tried the same game in Win8.x? What about BIOS & EC, are they up-to-date?
How about running stress tests for GPU?

Sorry for the delay to answer you.

I'm with the latest version of Windows 10 PRO x64, latest nVidia drivers.
No issues, problems on games or benchmarks.

There's only one little annoying behavior when the iGPU change to dGPU, the mouse freeze by 0.5 second, usually when a UAC screen pops up, but this only happens if the dGPU wasn't enabled.

    Hello Bepotrip,
Sorry to bring this information to you, but is not possible to connect all outputs in GT60/GT70 with IvyBridges...
I saw you pointed that you have a 3630QM...
A long time ago, right after I got my 980M, I tried to set nVidia surround, I saw that the 980M could do it, but I wasn't able to set it.
After doing some research, I find out that Optimus works differently that I thought in the past, all the display connections are managed only by iGPU, the dGPU render screens and them send the image to iGPU to be displayed.

It’s possible to set 3 independent displays, if 2 of them are connected by DisplayPort and one by VGA/HDMI/WiDi.

Unfortunately my GT60 uses a LVDS connector to the integrated screen, there's a VGA and a HDMI output, so for me there's no way to use 3 screens at the same time (2 of them are analog), I believe it's the same to you...

Check this information on this link -> http://www.intel.com/content/www/US/en/support/graphics-drivers/000005556.html

There's also a resolution limitation because of the HD4000 present in the Ivy bridge which officially supports resolutions up to 2560x1600 (60Hz) through DisplayPort and 1920x1600 (60Hz) throught HDMI.
I saw some people that achieved other resolutions using custom options with Intel display manager, like 3840x2560 (29Hz), but this should be tested with your system, and also there’s a problem when you are working beyond the hardware limit, just like an overclock, it can be unstable and sometimes dangerous.

About the VBIOS Mod, maybe it works, but is very dangerous since I believe that we don't have the necessary tools to mod Pascal series yet.
The trick is to edit the VBIOS values were the ID's changing by the ones that we know that work.

I found few feedbacks here about GTX 1060 and GT70 Ivy 1762 barebone. What about GT60 Ivy 16F3? I already have 51X Svet bios and 980 with editted .inf driver. I want to buy 1060, but I have to be sure it will works.

ok guys . ever since i purchased and installed the new 980m msi card ( which i got from an official msi gt72 upgrade kit ) into my msi gt70 and upgraded it from 870m , i began having sound crackling problem when the card hit 80 celsius. after googling i found oit that crackling happens because the overheated card sits right over the sound card. so i tried fixing the overheating problem
after a year of repasting and cleaning the laptop and trying gazillion types of thermal pads like ic diamond and etc.. nothing changed . my cpu sits at 50 on idle and i can't even touch the turbo boost mode and i disabled it and my cpu now runs on 2.7 ghz all time by setting the cpu usage to 99% only because when it's on and my cpu runs at 3.4 ghz its temp jumps to 70 on idle!
    so here's my question .
i upgraded the firmware and bios right before installing the 980m which was an upgrade kit for the msi gt72 so naturally i didn't need to upgrade the vbios of the card nor installing any inf files . but i doubt that the increase in the heat that much is caused by the upgrade i made of the ec firmware and bios.
so i need someone to give me a stable ec and bios that can run my 980m and adjust these insane temps . since the bios is the only thing i can think of remaining that might fix that problem for me. i can't even play 5 minutes without the sound crackling and then disappearing from the heat of the card. i am honestly clueless . i need bios or even vbios for the card that can adjust stuff for me.
    i'm a noob . i know it . but please help me. i'm desperate .
here's my bios ver and my gpu vbios version in the screenshots

    Untitled.png Untistled.png

edit : my laptop's original code was msi gt70 2pc . and o downloaded it's latest bios and flashed it from msi official website which is : e1763ims.51b
    but hw info now reads it msi gt70 2QE!! should I instead flash the 2QE latest bios which is ;
    E1763IMS.51D

would it be more suitable to my laptop ?? or would it brick it ?

i already flashed the E1763IMS.51D but still the heat issues is consisting
optimus works fine and switching between the cards is ok
i'm using the stock 180w psu adapter that came with the laptop
my gpu hits 85-87 sometimes when i game and the sound begin to crackle then dissappear after the gpu hits 80
    my current 980m vbios is
    Video BIOS Version: 84.04.22.00.0a
i found a newer version on this link : https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/174372/msi-gtx980m-8192-150108
it says the vbios version is :
    84.04.48.00.20

if i flashed would it run without problems ? any other suggestion ?

If you have 85-87C on the load of the GPU don't worry. These are normal temperatures at load especially for GTX 870M but also GTX 980M. Try to use Cooler Boost to lower the temps significantly, or a good laptop cooler but the first option is better for lowering high temps more effectively. Did you clean the fan of the laptop? Check to see if there is some dirt anywere behind the vents that could possibly obstruct the air flow and making more heat than normal.

    thanks for the reply
i cleaned the fan and the heat sink thoroughly . and i repasted the thermal paste numerous times using ic diamond . and yet the gpu hit the 85 degrees with turbo fan on at 5000 rpm.
i even got my self a laptop cooler ( cm storm sf-19 ) . and the temps didn't come down but for like two degrees.
the main problem is once i go over 80 , the audio begins to crackle and then totally disappear until the laptop cools down again . if i solved audio's problem , the high temps won't annoy me
btw i flashed the bios and ec to the latest and took the risk . it didn't change anything . i might consider reflashing the vbios from : 84.04.22.00.0a to 84.04.48.00.20 but i need someone expert to confirm that this is the right vbios for the card so i wouldn't brick it
    someone please help me out.

I don't think that if you update the VBIOS this will solve your audio problem. Are you with W10 Creators Update? After this update Sound Blaster Cinema is not working properly. May be try to uninstall Realtek driver and Sound Blaster Cinema and install again Realtek sound driver and Sound Blaster Cinema 2 or Nahimic which are optimized to work with GTX 980M and W10.

i removed sound blaster cinema long time ago from my pc
i am using only my realtek vanilla
i am asking about the vbios as means to an end which is to adjust the 980m's temps to be lower so the sound card wouldn't heat
    here's another thought
is there a usb sound card that reroutes the internal speakers to it instead of realtek ? again the realtek has no problem but for crackling sound when the heat goes up . if i connected a pair of speakers or headset i hear clearly .

    1C60 Version of the GTX 1060 is a G-Sync Vbios 1C20 is a Non-Gsync Vbios version.

Also i have modded the drivers for every version from 381.89 to the latest Nvidia Driver which you can download the inf HERE . They are in Folders per driver version.
I normally try and get the modded inf file up quickly after driver release.

    Hello.
My video card 675MX died on my MSI GT70 0NC. I am looking for a cheaper fix. I already updated to a custom 71 bios from svet.
    I've found this on ebay.
    Nvidia gtx 970m Msi Alienware 6GB GDDR5 MXM 3.0b
    http://www.ebay.ca/itm/152593405566?_trksid=p2380057.m570.l5999&_trkparms=gh1g=I152593405566.N36.S1.R1.TR1
Its Alienware. The seller claims in description it worked in his GT70 prior as an upgrade.
My question is whether this is a good buy? Will it work in my GT70? Would I need to update vbios?
    Thank you.

Hello I flashed my GT60 0NC bios to 51X and now my fan is maxed out and it no longer recognizes my original GTX670M. Laptop boots but no Nvidia GPU only onboard Intel.

Is it normal not to be able to roll back to MSI stock bios? It errors out with "Problem getting flash information."

A month ago or so, when my laptop was still a Haswell MSI GT70 2OD w/780m, I got a few back to back "nvlddmkm.sys" BSOD's.
After reinstalling the drivers using DDU I started getting the device manager Error 43 (Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)).
After this point, no matter how many times I reinstalled the nvidia drivers (a few different ones) and no matter how many times I clean format the windows the error was still there. I even completely disassembled and reassambled it.

I wasn't %100 sure what was broken (gpu or motherboard) so I decided to send it to the official msi service. They confirmed that my 780m was dead and cut me a price tag of $550 to replace my 780m with a new one. They also mentioned I could pay more for an upgrade.

I declined their offer and ordered a $400 GTX 980m from Aliexpress (from seller Wholesales Laptop Repair Parts Store) as any other store was selling it for ~$720 which is nearly double the amount. Together, I also ordered some thermal pads too. (0.5mm and 1mm)

The 980m arrived yesterday and here it is installed on my laptop.

I was acquainted with a metalworker so this morning I visited him and got the cooler modification done.

And finally I have finally finished upgrading my (broken) gtx 780m to a 980m. I had a backup of my old unigine heaven benchmark results and compared to those my new 980m was around %44 better than my old 780m.

I think my nvidia drivers are a little outdated and I will update them but let me know if I need to update my vBios or something as I don't know how to do that one myself.

Many thanks to all of you for the instructions and the information you provided.
If I hadn't seen so many of you succeed, I might have been too scared to attempt an upgrade like this.

MSI GT70 2OD (Haswell) --980m Tested and Working
    System BIOS Version: E1763IMS.71D
    EC Version: 1763EMS1.517
    GTX 980m 8GB Standard(???) vBios: 84.04.2F.00.79
    Windows 10 x64
    Standard Nvidia Drivers

Excellent write up and thank you for the follow up on your 780m and current 980m upgrade. It's an excellent card and a great upgrade for your system.

That metal work on the heatsink also looks clean af!

    Congrats! Enjoy your new system!

Ok, if someone can help me out. Since I like the sound quality on my GT60 0NC, I've decided to keep it going with a GTX 980M (Clevo) upgrade. I currently have BIOS 30U/EC 505 on the laptop. In order get this video card detected and drivers installed, I would need to.

    1. Get or modify a heatsink to fit the 980M
    2. Remove my current 670M and flash x51 BIOS and EC
    3. Install the 980M and hopefully it's detected
    4. Install modded drivers

I've done similar to my Dell M6700, but that was all Dell parts. This should work with a Clevo card? I want to make sure before actually buying the card. Any comments appreciated.

Hey I have a gt683-694UK I've been wanting to upgrade it so far all I've done is doubled the ram to 16gb ddr3 and I have added a 1tb harddrive. The CPU ill be upgrading with is i7-2860qm G2, I was also planning to swap the 700gb hhd for an ssd 256gb.
Okay so with the SSD if I wanted games to load faster /better would they have to be saved on the SSD or will the SSD make the 1tb faster some how (I don't know how they work)
Also I was wandering what graphics card I could upgrade to.
    Thank you
