I can't find any similar problems in this thread, anybody heared something simillar? -
Looks like your 980m is not fed with enough voltage when it kicks to 3D mode... That's strange behaviour. Makes me remember I had same issue 10 years ago (or so) with a 9700m gt MXM on a FSC Pi1556... Car would work nicely on 2d mode but as soon as 3d mode was enabled, it froze the whole laptop. Fortunately at the time, it was easier to fix. You should try to save your vbios with GPUZ and try to see the voltage given to the card in 3d mode with maxwell bios tweaker.
It can only be helpful to solve your issue.
Edit: just a silly question... Did you remove all trace of your existing nvidia driver BEFORE installing the new card?? If not, that could be the source of your problem. REMOVE ALL NVIDIA DRIVER then use drive fusion to wipe anything "nvidia related" and after that install a new driver, with custom ini file if needed (go to laptopvideo2go). -
The part about voltage, I had 880M MSI working in my laptop, so I'd think the 980M BIOS would benefit raising the voltage, at this stage I'm 99% sure it's the card not laptop.
The 980M is CLEVO.
I'll ask the seller if he's OK with me tinckering with the BIOS -
Any update?
-
I didn't try other BIOSes on my card because the seller didn't answer my question if he'd permit that.
I also tried 240W PSU and replacing my 4930MX with 4700MQ, always same result.
Returning the card this week -
Looks like your 980m is defective...

That's normal because your system uses Optimus technology. Is your game playable? You can also turn on fps on your game to verify.

You can enable an additional icon in the notification area to see which graphics card is being used:
- Click Start and then Control Panel. Select Classic View from the left side of the window.
- Double-click NVIDIA Control Panel.
- Click View and next Display GPU Activity Icon in Notification Area.
- Click the new icon in the notification area. A pop-up will show applications using the NVIDIA graphics. When the NVIDIA graphics is not used, it will show None.

Hi guys
Just wanna know if there is someone who has improved their cooling and how you have done it. I have also b.t.w upgraded my GT70 2 PC Dominator to GTX 980 from GTX 870. Already with the 870 I had problem with sound disappearing while gaming (gpu gets warm and the sound chip gets affected, a very common problem as I understand it) The problem has continued with the 980, so I was just curios what you have done about it ? (besides running the fan at full speed all the time while gaming) Otherwise I love this laptop and all possibilities to upgrade it, and last but not least I want to thank you all helpful people in this thread
