Yes I suspect Nvidia have been cherry picking for some time now.

Just a heads up, the GT72 GTX 980 is a 150W model.
hmscott, deepfreeze12, Curs3 and 1 other person like this. -
870DM - 200W
775DM - 180W
MSI GT72S - 150W
MSI GT80 - 120W each (SLI)
Is this how it looks now? -
I don't know about the GT80, I think its above 120W, but the others > yes

Arji, Gearhunter, kolias and 3 others like this. -

Is it confirmed somewhere else the GT80 is getting desktop 980 MXM cards or still rocking M versions? Looks like they're getting M versions even on that crazy high over priced laptop. -
Apparently the GT80 Skylake 980 SLI model isn't ready for release yet, as it hasn't been announced.
The other GT80 Skylake model pre-order listings are ahead of MSI listing them on their own website, so I would consider it all in a state of flux without confirmation from MSI at this point.
I would hope MSI still provides the 980m SLI price point, as the 980 SLI price point is going to be higher -
-
They haven't changed their site to show otherwise:
http://www.msi.com/product/notebook/GT72S-6QD-Dominator-G.html#hero-specification -
I'm confused too. I thought all the GSync GT72S models were at 75. Just like the broadwell ones released this summer?
Is there any indication that GTX model will be eventually available in a non anniversary edition without the red and the dragon stuff on it? Nvidia's pic of a normal looking 72 is promising, but they don't know any better I'm sure. -
-
So this would be a valid reason to ask for a refund, right?
If I saw MSI's page for this model and it says 75Hz screen, then I receive one and it's a 60Hz screen. -
So if the GT72S doesn't have a 75Hz screen, the only difference b/w the "S" and non-"S" GT72 is the chipset?... And the only noticeable difference b/w the HM170 and the CM236 chipsets is the number of PCIe 4x gen3 M.2 slots?
Edit:
NVM, The CM236 has VTd, while the HM170 doesn't. I need VTd.

Bottom of which page? I went back to the MSI site and don't see a note.

Just above the links at the bottom of the page:
"The specifications may differ from areas and we keep the right to change without notice. Please check the specification with your local dealers." -
Ah ok. No GT72S for me then. Maybe they'll add it to all GT72S models in the future.
-
MSI GT72S 6QE Dominator Pro G-265UK on OcUK is listed with Product Specification:
- Display: 17.3" 1920 x 1080 FHD Anti Glare Wide View Angle IPS 75Hz WITH NVIDIA G-SYNC
This is the entry level GT72S with a GTX 980M.

The panel will be tested to meet that refresh rate. Not all panels may do it. Regional spec and price differences will happen (the uk pay a lot more for their machines).

So models shipped to the UK are more likely to be able to run at higher refresh rates?
-
My MSI GT780 panel is who-know-how-old and I overclock it to 88Hz (no jealousy please) when gaming and set to 72 for everything else.
-
How do you OC a panel?
-
Max depends on panel. My Chi Mei 17" would do 100hz no problem, some could get 105hz. AUO 17" peaked at 70hz. Samsung 18" will do 100hz.
Sample:
-
Sweet. Thanks. Will it show only refresh rates the panel can support?
-
Yes and can running it at a higher refresh rate damage it (the display)?

I've never seen one fail but anything that happens is your responsibility. You can set custom resolutions to any level, even beyond what your monitor can manage. If it's not stable the screen will go black.
-
Mine sits at 80 hz its nice though
-
"Enable Resolutions not exposed by display"
That is what you are looking for -
I would find the unstable point, and drop at least 5-10hz below it, just to make sure you are at a stable refresh.
I usually only run it high during gaming, if the game fps is in that range, I set the custom refresh at or below average fps.Last edited: Oct 15, 2015 -

Just tested 100Hz as suggested and if I can keep it this way it gonna be super time playing L4D2 on 100-tick servers.

Yes every panel will be different, just like any overclocking it's luck of the draw.

Same thing happened on my G750JH, AUO screen, 70hz.
The AUO had really nice screen output, I didn't miss the 100hz refresh, much -
You can watch our review here:
at: 8:59
and here: at: 4:39
To sum it up:
- All GT72, GT72S are using the LGD0469 IPS panel 1080P matte-type panel.
- All GT72, GT72S with mobile GPU has 60Hz refresh reate.
- GT72S with desktop GTX980 is the only SKU that have 75Hz refresh rate.
- All GT72, GT72S are G-Sync enabled except the lowest SKU: the GT72 Dominator-019 with GTX970M are not G-Sync enabled.
- GT72 Dominator-019 is the only SKU that MSI does not advertised it's G-Sync enabled.
So what's going on? We think MSI want to have the option to use different panel other than LG IPS on different production batch for GT72 Dominator-019, therefore, G-Sync is not enabled and not advertised on this specific SKU.Last edited: Oct 15, 2015 -

Seems like an odd thing to do. To use the same panel across all the models, binning the ones that will OC to 75hz from the 60hz specification. You would think MSI would fit the panel spec to the need instead.
Thanks for all the details -
I checked on Nvidia's CUDA support site:
http://www.geforce.com/hardware/technology/cuda/supported-gpus
and the Notebook GTX 980 is listed as supported:
http://www.geforce.com/hardware/notebook-gpus/geforce-gtx-980
Not sure when that CUDA box would be unselected, my GT80 980m's both show CUDA checked:
Any idea why CUDA is shown unchecked at 5:20 and 11:06 in your video?

Also the screen on the Dragon can go up to 100Hz:

I see that the 950 pro is available for purchase in some stores and sites, if you really want it, it is not hard to replace the SSDs. You can always choose to do it yourselfscorpio187 and hmscott like this. -

Thanks guys for clarifying!

It may be due to a lack of panels reaching 75hz.

If the GPU is rated at 165W and the CPU at 40W for a total of 205W, does the power brick at 230 W enough? Over volt? I wonder how much the rest uses, Panel, fans, USB, SSD?
-
I thought that was thermal, not how much electricity it sucked up?
The Sky's the limit..... The New SkyLake GT72S, with desktop 980 GPU!
