Sorry for the re-answering that @Talon and everyone else provided.
I'll never say the Barebones is better to anybody..
It is however, better FOR ME. That's all that matters.
If you have doubts the 6700hq will be sufficient for you today and down the road, then go for the barebones.
Even if the GT62 is offered with the 6820HK in the USA later, I would still say get the 6700K instead in the Barebones because it's better to work downwards on clocks then upwards with the 6820HK because from what I hear, the binning is quite bad on the 6820HK vs a 6700K. You're guaranteed at 4.2ghz on the 6700K.. You are definitely NOT guaranteed 4ghz on the 6820HK.

I've been in close communication with Svet about unlocking/modding the 16L13 bios.. He has a suite of tools he hand-crafted/and or coded himself he says he can use to work on the dumped BIOS from my unit. Downside is there's no guarantee yet and that he will have to spend 5-6 hours cooking something up for us.
I am funding his time personally and if @Talon and whoever else want to help push a donation to him, that would be much appreciated. -
That could be pretty nice in a 16L13 Tornado F5 and/or P870DM3.

7700k is an interesting CPU with a low base clock.. I think I would enjoy it for some low power profiles
-
It's the highest ever. 4.2GHz base and 4.5GHz turboboost based on what I read. Whether that is accurate or not I don't know. We will have to wait until it is official.

Seems like there is some conflicting info, so we will have to wait and see.
According to Eurocom, 7700K will be an upgrade option for existing owners of the Tornado F5 16L13 and a configuration option as soon as it is released.chezzzz, Papusan, Talon and 1 other person like this. -

If it's more than a couple of % then I might be interested, i'll be interested in its power profile as the clocks increase.

You know I will as well. I can't say I need it,but I'll probably upgrade it because my laptop allows me to and I'll sell the 6700k to offset the cost.i_pk_pjers_i, Papusan, Mr. Fox and 1 other person like this.

I haven't forgotten what happened last time when little Johnny found out mommy and daddy were going to get him another BGA turdbook for Christmas. He didn't like the last one and... and... well, I think the video speaks for itself. You can tell he has an attitude about it the way his arms are crossed. He already told daddy he wanted a beast like his P870, but they wouldn't listen. I bet he would have been happy with a Eurocom Tornado F5 (MSI 16L13).

Your choice of words make sense. Very true
If more people had seen the light as you, perhaps ODM / OEM' s finally stopped using Intel BGA **** in their gaming laptops. Saved those unwanted BGA i7 chips to their smaller, thinner laptop models

Hey Diversion is it have unlocked bios? if not it will very dissapointed for super machine
-
Didn't realize there was a another discussion going on about the Tornado F5 in the Sager/Clevo section...
I have the 6600k variant, if anyone has any questions about it. My biggest deciding factor for purchasing the Tornado F5 was simply: cost. A $1700 notebook is out of my budget. Choosing the right components combined with the student discount, I ended only paying $1418. For a notebook containing a GTX 1070, this is the best price/performance option right now. -
I wish this would come in a 17 inch screen.

I think it sure because last time msi sell the gt72s barebone too

Well I was confused, I was merely dumping the BIOS + EC BIOS with a tool he made for him.. He has to mod it now lol.. But looking good so far since the BIOS + EC dumped properly to 8mb (vs the 6mb I got).
Unfortunately since he's in EUR I'm not sure when i'll hear from him, perhaps tomorrow morning.CIPHERSTONE, hmscott and Mr. Fox like this. -
Is there any review of any kind of this model. I am actually want this model, I have a on P670RS but the 17 vs 15 inch debate is really killing me.
-
No official reviews on a website or anything.. A good review that would cover about 90+% of the unit is of the MSI GT62VR: http://www.notebookcheck.net/MSI-GT62VR-6RE-Dominator-Pro-Notebook-Review.171215.0.html
-
The positive feedback from the folks that already own one would actually be more valuable than most "professional" reviews. The fact that the people that have one love it speaks volumes. The fact that at least one or two replaced their GT62VR with this model says even more.
-
I mean, I would love to get this one, but still the 17 vs 15 inch is getting to me. The P670RS I ordered has 2 HDs space and 17 but everything is soldered to the mobo wish i dont like.
This model with the i5 6600k is $272 cheaper (if I apply a 10% student discount) than the model I just ordered with a 6820hk. I dont care about hyper threading, i just want the overclocking. But the savings is also killing me to get this and cancel the other order.Mr. Fox likes this. -
Yeah I haven't heard anything negative about the MSI Barebones.. Once I get an unlocked bios this thing will be absolute perfection to me.Mr. Fox likes this.
-
When can you get a unlocked bios and is it going to be made public. I still have time to cancel the other order, its on back order until the 14th and it might not ship for another several weeks. I still have time.
Is this model on back order, or how soon did people get theirs. -
Good question.. I am working with Svet (who is over on the MSI forums that makes custom/unlocked BIOS for all things MSI). The MSI Barebones BIOS is so new, he was unable to find it in his repositories with MSI, etc.
Him and I have been working closely to get an unlocked BIOS and I have personally been funding his time.
I don't believe at this point in time it will be made public and he has asked me to not share any dumps/utilities, etc at this time so obviously I will need to honor his requests as he already typically said that he doesn't really modify non-MSI BIOS and apparently Eurocom's BIOS is a modded version of MSI's I guess he decided to change his mind and attempt to cook something up for me.
Once we find that it's either successful (or not) he may need to work on a donation system to release it to those who want it. He's already put in about 6+ hours of time and nothing's for free, I think it'd be fine if you want a custom bios from him, that he gets paid a small amount for it.
I think what will be exciting to have done is if Svet can give people a custom image when you boot up so instead of the "EUROCOM" logo when the system is booting up, we can maybe have a "PC Master Race" one or something cool.Last edited: Oct 10, 2016 -
Saw the bottom part of your post about the wait time.. It took about 1.5 weeks to get mine which wasn't too bad imo.hmscott likes this.

These are the BIOS boot images on my last two systems with @Prema mods
That alone is reason enough to cancel the order. Seems like a no-brainer getting what you want (no soldered garbage) and $272 cheaper. I'd just do it if I were in your shoes. Best rule of thumb I always use, if there is a hint of anything I don't like (such as BGA filth) then it's not even open for consideration. That approach has never let me down. If you don't like it before you buy it, chances are you're going to be extremely dissatisfied and wish you had gone with your instincts. Instincts are not always accurate, but I find when I am skeptical or have a bad feeling about something they are almost always dead-on accurate. When my instincts are wrong is usually when I think something is going to be good and it turns out to be crap, LOL.Last edited: Oct 10, 2016chezzzz, Ashtrix, Papusan and 1 other person like this. -
Those are awesome boot logos! Hoping Svet can manage it for us. He said he will try.
So on the topic of BGA, since Intel dropped the mobile line of MQ LGA probably has a huge lot to do with why we're getting more BGA solutions than LGA? We're forced to go LGA desktop (which is fine) but it would have been cool to see some unlocked CPUs from the mobile line for people who want to deal with less heat and those are at least de-lidded without a IHS for the direct heatsink on die. -
How does the fan noise on this laptop compare to the Sager NP-8153 / Clevo P651RP6? I am somewhat torn between the Eurocom Tornado F5 and the Eurocom Sky MX5 R2 which appears to me to me quite similar to the sager NP-8153.
The Sky MX5 R2 seems tempting as it's only 1.15" and weighs only 5.8lbs, making it a bit more portable, but if it sounds like a mini jet engine then I'd rather steer clear of it. Personally I don't mind going with either the desktop 6700 or the mobile 6700hq. I can get the Sky MX5 R2 for $1610CAD with the GTX 1070 and 6700hq or the tornado F5 for $1700CAD with the 1070 and 6700 (non-k) so price isn't an issue. -
Intel + OEM/ODM's have understood that it is possible to fool people. Sell trash for a higher price... = BGA was born!! Ingeniously. And people jump on

So just to keep things clear, the Tornado F5 is a MSI Barebones.. And i've only read forum opinions and I have heard that the MSI and Clevo both idle very quietly but under max loads, the MSI will be quieter here. It's a very quiet machine.. If i'm rendering/encoding stuff, I barely hear the CPU fan spin up more than it runs at idle. Under games both CPU and GPU fans ramp up a bit, but to me sounds more akin to a desktop set to automatic fans.. Just a low wooshing sound.. nothing high pitched over here.hmscott, Mr. Fox and vycanismajoris like this.

How is the screen on it, can you see the model #.
The screen is very important to me. I am coming from a clevo p370sm3 with the 120hz screen that I love. Most 120hz screens today are out of my budget. But I have bought all of my laptop for the past 9 years used, only 1 generation behind the current one. This is my 1st new laptop in 9 years, last one was a sager 2090. -

@Mr. Fox linked the screen.. The panel is shared on quite a few current G-Sync 15" laptops.. I find it to be really good.. I've had 3 of these screens in a row and all looked great. Also it's a non-PWM dimming screen so it's easy on the eyes on lower brightness settings.

Can you fit a 12 or 15mm HD in the 2.5 slot.
I have x2 2tb drives in my current one but this model only has 1 2.5 HD slot. I found a 4tb HD but is 12 or 15mm, I remember. -
I think it is a 12mm (I have one) and if it fits it might be tight. Hard to know without one to test the fit.
Did you see the high quality internal photos that Brother @Diversion posted in another thread? That might give you a clue as to whether it will fit. -
I don't know what the max size that would fit in the 2.5" bay.. As i'm just using a 1tb SATA ssd in there which are all the probably 9mm or so. Unfortunately I can't test anything larger for you. The 4TB 5400rpm drives are definitely thicker.. It might work? Maybe without using the bracket for the HDD it would. It's kind of a tight fit as is. You have to sort of slide the drive in sideways to begin with.
-
No I didnt see the pictures, is it in this thread.

Come to think of it, I think a 15mm might work.. There seems to be a bit of room under the hdd.. The bracket kind of floats the drive in place leaving a gap underneath it, if that makes any sense. But i'm not responsible if it doesn't work

It looks like the Sky MX5 R2 has a similar cooling system to the M5 Pro. See below:
I can tell you from experience, the fans on the Sky MX5 R2, they aren't quiet when under load. They are small fans that need to spin fast to get sufficient airflow. The result is loud, high-pitched noise. The sad thing is my CPU still hits 90C+
The Tornado F5 has larger fans, which means they can spin slower and still get the same or better airflow. The result is a low, hum.
Want to ask about Eurocom Tornado F5
