Just checked this out, do the speeds of the host servers vary over time for you guys? I'm in Miami and the server here, "hosted by telefonica Chile", used to return great speeds for me, but now this is the best I get-
    [IMG]
I was worried that maybe my router or cable line had a flaw but with a server in Tampa I get this, which is more like what I'm used to seeing-

I'm not seeing the speed variations you are. This is with my MBP on wireless 54g.

I would test on a direct connect bypassing your router if you think it may be acting up.

Now if your on a cable system it is a Party Line. So if someone is running BT it could suck there system down. More on line the slower it will get, the reason I switched to FIOS. I'm also using my Netgear FVS338 as my main router. This being a SMB router it can take a pounding and keep on clicking.

Yeah....keep bragging. Those numbers are unreal due to Comcast "speed-boost" in the first 30 seconds or so, long enough for Speedtest.net to complete its test :) . Try it at: testmy.net and choose the largest file to see what's your REAL speed in a sustained download.

I Know. Every time I go visit my dad, that is all I have available to use. Coming from a 15/10mbps service to a 24k (on a good day) takes me forever to get things done. The price he pays for living in the country.

Comcast like several other cable internet companies use a speed boost to "cheat" on these speedtests, so it's hard to get accurate results. The best test is to download a large file from a server that is definitely faster than your connection (such as microsoft.com) and measure the actual time to download.

The boost speeds give you much higher download speeds for the first 30-60 seconds or something so you can see downloads in the 4MB/s at first then it settles down to your actual speed of say 1MB/s.

When you do a speed test, this boost goes into play then too and shows up as killer download and upload speeds as well.

ah, so you mean they would allow you to have a faster speed for the initial 30-60 seconds(or the first 1MB or whatever) and slow down the tap after that.

Anyone care to explain this? I have always thought that my isp was bsing me on speedtest.net, so I upgraded to 12Mbps today, I started dling some linux isos for my new media box I get tomorrow, they started at 1000+kb/s, awesome I am thinking until a half hour later I am getting a total of 180kb/s HAHA what a joke. Anyways, so I am watching a movie, dling these Isos and decided, hey might as well try a speed test, heres my result!

everything is a party line...just a matter of where the party is located at.

Cable lines hook up to a central box where fiber is ussually located at. That sometimes is a bottel neck on crappy isps. Now DSL and fiber have a party/bottle neck at the CO (Central Office) If the CO does not have ample bandwidth it will have the same problem. Many times CO are over taxed too. Just a bigger pool so its ussually less of a problem.

lol why such uber downloads in japan but terrible uploads lol. makes that line usless in my book. Also no one with surewest? comon i would love surewest 10/10 20/20 40/40 FTTP Definately best ISP ever

I'm using Bellsouth DSL, paying for 1.5 down and 0.768 up. my up is always crap for some reason, though 1.4 is close enough I suppose. It's enough to have two computers (mine and family's) and Xbox LIVE gaming at the same time without much lag, so I'm happy (sorta...wish I had FIOS). In contrast, the SpeedTest in my sig is from my high school on a MetroEthernet connection through the city.

It is as good or better than others, even those with fantastic download speeds.

Hey, what is the SpeedTest in your sig?

It's the internet connection that is used in my school district. seeing as there are hundreds upon hundreds of computers in the career center, 3 high schools, 3 middle schools, and loads of elementary schools, im not exactly surprised by the speeds. oh, how much i want that connection to my house =/. I imagine that the city uses fiber optic as the backbone, though I've never been able to find out (since I live in the "commercial hub" of a backwater region...)

Speedtest.net and most others will always show your powerboost result.

You would need to do large sustained downloads to get your actual speed since powerboost will come and go.

This might sound weird but every time I perform a speedtest the download tests just fine at 14Mb/s but I dc on the upload.
That being said, I sync at 17mbit down and 0.7mbit up.

problem is, he's only connecting to a local server on the same island. if he tries to connect to malaysia or hongkong, it won't be as fast(maybe, maybe not, since he's at a college with probably 1000mbps lines)

eg: consumer internet plans in singapore, 25mbps global, 200mbps local
