The US is lagging behind the rest of the world when it comes to connectivity.

How much does this connection cost a month?

    @kevinla

It's not that bad- US isn't exactly lagging behind the rest of the world- there are just few countries like Sweden or S. Korea that put the rest of us to shame.

What seems to be an issue in the US and Canada is not the speed but transfer limits, traffic shaping and similar techniques that make you pay for something that's not really usable.

It might also be an issue of population.

With so many people, it might be more difficult to give every home a blazing fast connection.

My comcast is grade A- right this minute (32Mbit/s down)... not as hot as the other day.

Anyways, here's a general question for the network switch experts...
This is for home (not corporate) use. Suppose we have a cablemodem going to a router to a regular/consumer-grade network switch and then to various wired computers. If we replace that regular/consumer switch with a managed L2/L3 type... will the ping or bandwidth improve? (Pretend there are multiple users on the switch at the same time and we don't want to buy multiple switches to segment them... just buying one L2/L3 switch or will keep using the same old one.) Will a managed (L2/L3) switch improve anything here? Thanks.

Nice speed for an ADSL connection- hard to get these kind of speeds unless you're actually seating in a DSLAM ;)

I don't, it's unlimited, I was on 40gb a month but that has been upgraded.

Some say on my package they will throttle after 300gb, but my provider claims they don't. Don't think I'll hit 300gb though.

I take speedtest.net results with a grain of salt. For my home connection, they are highly variable at best. I've seen results anywhere from 6 Mbit down to 50 Mbit down, depending on the server and day.

    Examples:

Just for giggles, let's try Los Angeles:

    and finally Alaska:

When results vary that much, somebody's full of it.

Comcast is coy about the exact data rate I "should" be seeing, and it seems highly dependent on server location anyway. This makes it pretty much pointless to compare results with others.

Granted, it costs about US$80 a month, but it's a 2 year contract and they paid for half the Lenovo Y580 that was plugged in to get that result.

Not complaining, even a little bit. :)
