ac can run on 2.4 i think? Though the router will need to force to take up all the channel ?

No. It's only up to 450mbps on 2.4GHz (max 802.11n speed) while AC speeds are available only on 5GHz.

    WhatsThePoint,

Just curious.... you have the Intel Dual Band 7260 wifi card. Does yours have and antennas?

I have the card installed into an adapter on my Motherboard and it has two plug-ins for antennas. Does yours have 2 antennas?

Where did you buy the antennas?

    Thanks in advance.....

Why would the installation of the antenna be complex?

Because you'd have to route them through your laptop -- usually they're routed from the wifi card slot to the laptop lid, going around the LCD.. so you'd have to route the cable correctly, and making sure it doesn't get pinched

    Adapter on the motherboard?

Most notebooks have 2 antennas pre installed.

The black antenna wire is designated as the primary that attaches to the card connector marked #1 and the grey wire is the auxiliary and gets attached to the card connector marked #2.

If for some reason you don't have the antennas in your notebook you will probably need to buy a pair on ebay as suggested already or from a reseller that sells parts.

The bezel around your LCD screen will need to come off so the antennas can be placed on each side of the LCD,or other positions as far apart as possible, and the antenna wires snaked behind the panel>through the hing and onto the wireless card.

    You'll need something like this

Actually I don't have a notebook. I have a PC that I built and the motherboard has a space for the Intel 7260 and also a mSATA (mini-SATA) which is plugged into an adapter then plugged into the motherboard

    mobo1.jpg

    mobopic2.jpg

(I hope the pics came through)

The adapter, photo 1 is on the upper left of the picture. The Wi-Fi 7260 card goes on the adapter.
Photo 2 shows a front on look as to what the adapter looks like.

The card shown in photo 3 has two spots for antennas.

    mobo3.jpg

The antenna(s) is what I need to successfully have this card working up to it's potential.

    Anyway, thanks for responding.

Well if you have a mpcie(make sure it is not just pci-e as that would require a adapter) slot, you can just can grab those antennas(tyco brand) mentioned and tape them somewhere. Just toy around the location.

    Or you can try these

Yeah, this setup from hwtools should be good for a desktop motherboard but the site prices are high.

If you have a USB 3.0 port you might consider this adapter instead of the Intel AC-7260.

    Just received mine
Ran some test with iperf and windows file transfer (peak values, first 30sec ish?)and the result is almost identical. Crystal disk mark refuse to work for idk wat reason ~~

    number in MB/s.

clear is 5-6 ft with not exactly line of sight , but it is clear no wall w.e
room is 15ft ish? with 2wall and door open. I have no clue if AC is working in room as there is no way to tell. Seem to me that inssider cant read AC? and AC is definitely working as clear 5ghz is 35MB/s.
    2.4Ghz is 20mhz .

Next to router around 2-3 ft I hit 45MB/s peak, average 35+. That is half of what I get from lan around 81. Will do a full file test and see how it perform.

    clear 2.4 room 2.4 clear 5 room 5
    7260 13 8 35 14
    6200 11 9 13 13

For w.e reason Using 6200 + 5100 in 1 machine used to give me bsod, but now I can use both with no issue.

I want 3 stream card RAWR.

Edit : forget something important , router is ac66u. driver on both is lastest as of today.

The bluetooth driver I got from dell site

35MB/s is what I wanted to hear all the time. This is pretty impressive especially that it's "only" a two antenna card.
    Thanks for reporting.

Well, I have to be essentially in lan range, it is fun to operate w.o cable, but not real practical for machine with lan port. Unless, if the other end is on wifi also and it is capable at such speed. (i don't have such setup to test, personals i just grab a usb 3 ssd and boom)

Anyways, overall the performance is a bit better than 6200, come with blue tooth and it "futureproofs". So there is no reason not to get this one over 6235.I was able to purchase the card for 24 shipped, though it took 2 week to get to me.

Up until today I've only tested transfer speeds of a Windows 8.1 3.6GB ISO file from my MSI GT780DX to a USB flash drive connected to the USB 2.0 ports on a Netgear R6300 router.

The speed was close to steady at 7.5 MB/s with a peak of 7.8 GB/s

Today the test results are with the same Windows 8.1 ISO file but transferring between 2 PCs on the Home Network.

Both the Desktop (wired to the router) and Notebook have Windows 7 x64 HP installed on 240GB SanDisk Extreme SSDs.

The ISO file Windows transfer speeds were between 37.0 MB/s and 38.6 MB/s going both ways.

Switching to Windows 8.1 Pro x64 RTM installed on a 3rd SanDisk Extreme SSD in the notebook with the AC-7260(driver v16.5.0.15) the transfer speed from the Desktop to the notebook increased to peak at 41.5 MB/s with an avereage speed 39.6 MB/s.

This is a godsend for me. I usually sit with fairly good line of site to my router < 30ft away and get sustained 35-40FPS with AC. Wired is a pain for me since I don't usually sit at a traditional desk. It's either at kitchen table, living room couch, bedroom, etc.

My normal position in my 20th floor apartment is in the living room about 15' and 2 cement walls away from the Netgear R6300 router. Before, with 16.1.3.1, I would get 4 or 5 bars but now it's steady on 5 bars in the taskbar and Windows Status Monitor.

The Status Monitor speed displayed is still like a yo-yo ranging from 95Mbps to 702Mbps.Only when I move to a position in line of sight and 8' from the router I get a steady 866.7Mbps.

When I had the Killer 1103(w/3rd antenna) installed and in the living room position the Status Monitor and Bigfoot Network Manager(transmit and receive) never budged off 450Mbps.

The Intel AC-7260 can best be discribed as a work in progress and a mixed bag.

Internet downloads were faster and connecting to sites was almost without noticeable lag with the 1103 while PC to PC network file transfer are about 10 MB/s faster,30 MB/s vs 40 MB/s,using the AC-7260.

When cold booting to the desktop it takes 10 to 15 seconds for the yellow mark to disappear and get 5 white bars with the AC-7260 while with the 1103 the 5 white bars were present right when the desktop appeared.

Got the opportunity today to run the Passmark Advanced Network Test with the notebook as the server and also as the client from 2 locations in my apartment.

The second PC that is required to do the test is a desktop wired to the router.

Locations were 15' away from the router through 2 cement walls and 8' away in line of sight.

Intel driver v16.5.1.6 for Windows 8.1 x64 is available on station-drivers.

I needed to manually update through device manager and point the update to the production folder>Windows 8.1 x64 folder>netwbw02.inf

So is anyone experiencing slow wifi initialization during startup (Windows 8)?

My 7260 decides to finally connect to a wifi hotspot after everything loads during startup...

It's annoying because steam keeps on coming up saying it couldn't connect, and when I click retry, I have to log in with my password even though I clicked "Save password"... >.>

So I left it on the lockscreen for about 30 seconds... Wifi connects 25 seconds after logging in, just enough time to avoid that steam connection error...

I guess my boot up is too fast... I doubt it. I think it's a bug. :/

Im using driver version 16.1.5 on my Windows 7 x64 installation and 16.5.1.6 on Windows 8.1 RTM and both suffer a 10~15 second connecting delay after the notebook has booted to the desktop.

I've been waiting for a 3 steam wireless AC card from Killer but 4 stream cards and routers may appear instead or sooner.

There's been a 3 day holiday here the past few days so I did another test. This time the LAN Speed Test sending varios sized packets between 1MB and 100MB from the notebook to the desktop over my private home network. Here's a screen of the 10MB Test.

Hmm the other update I installed between this problem and it's "disappearance" is the Intel management engine firmware update. Could that contribute to the solution? Don't think so

Don't know. The ME firmware update can only be done via a bios update that includes it, correct? Sager did not include any updates with their latest BIOS. I heard that Clevo did though.

There are problems with this so don't count on it. Four streams require four antennas and antennas have to have space between them otherwise they interfere with one another- seeing as mini-PCI Express card is 3cm wide and 0.5cm from each side is essentially wasted on mounting holes you are left with barely enough place to place three antennas.

In order to have four antennas would have to be spaced out all over the mini-PCI Express board and routed in such a way that they wouldn't cause interference. This is going to be pretty hard to do in a notebook.

Another point- transmit power stays the same but is divided by more subcarriers so the range will get slightly shorter (although speed at far from the router will still be better than it currently is).
Yet another issue- 4 streams mean more antennas, more RF chains and more power drawn. Not necessarily something welcomed in mobile devices.

My guess is we're going to see three antennas tops and then move to 802.11ac wave 2 with 160MHz channels where with three spatial streams you could achieve 2600mbps connection speed.

    /OT

With notebook emphasis on slim and power efficient, chip makers have their work cut out.

Antenna design changes plus a wireless card form change may be required

How to implement 4 to 8 802.11ac streams will be a challenge for the chipset and device makers.

A 2 GB/s link speed with 256 MB/s transfers would be nice in the middle of next year but we'll probably see a lot less. The 2 GB/s is most likely not in the cards for next year

I started having connection dropouts today. Got fed up & swapped my intel 7260 with the Atheros card that came with the laptop. Startup delay still persists, but no dropouts. I also tried to connect to my network with another windows 8 laptop (atheros card), it also had the delay but no dropouts. No delay in connection after resuming from sleep in all cases. I think the startup delay in most cases is an issue with W8. While the connection dropouts seems to be a common issue with many Intel cards.

Was on 16.1.3.1 win 8 64,had one or a few? Instance where the 5ghz band just went dead on the adapter. Fix after disable/enable.

Just updated and will see how it behaves. considering the rate of drivers rolling out, I guess they still fixing stuff here and there.

I also get periodic dropouts and ping spikes. I'm 15 ft from my router no barriers like walls or anything like that. Direct line of sight.

Beamed from my G2 Tricorder now Free

In the Windows Wireless Network Properties are you guys checking the "Enable Intel Connection Settings" and then selecting 5ghz Band/Put in Access Point Address,Cisco Measurement?

In the Wireless Card Advanced Properties what do you have selected for "Wireless Mode"?

    I have mine on a/b/g

Heya, I'm kind of jumping into the thread here so I apologize if the post is redundant, but some customers have had a few issues like the ones frequently noted around here with the 7260. We found one fix that seemed to help a lot with the average user's issue: simply enough, wiping the drivers, then going to Intel's site and downloading Driver ver. 16.1.5.2., reconfiguring the network for "dual band" and connecting via the 5GHz band seemed to knock it out. This won't solve everyone's issues with this card obviously (it's unfortunate too, that there are SO many people w/issues because it's theoretically a nice card) but it has helped a few people, if anyone desperate happens to stumble on this thread :)

It might be the interest of some users here that on Oct 21 Intel released new PROset Bluetooth software for the 7260 family applicable to Windows 7, 8 and 8.1

I'd recommend to save the following link at your favorites and regularly check it. This will show related wireless & Bluetooth/Wireless software and driver releases:

    Hope it helps

My speed issues had fixed themselves with windows 8, but after updating to 8.1 and downloading those new drivers (they appeared in windows update) I get the periodic drops that I originally got. I don't get it, it's like if you don't stress the connection 24/7 it lowers the maximum data rate and you have to either restart your computer or disable/re-enable the adapter in device manager or network and sharing center --> change adapter settings.

I really want to like the card, but it has really bad ping spikes that my 5300N didn't have and the disabling/re-enabling is a real problem.

If anyone finds any other fixes besides forcing dual band and using 5GHz band for the AC, lemme know? It'd help greatly, with the amount of time I spend streaming and on twitch etc and then the amount of downtime just chilling in teamspeak and watching anime or working where transfer slows to a crawl.

Hardware is always on the market before proper software to run it well.

This has always been the case.

I've been using driver v16.5.3 and newest Bluetooth suite on my Windows 8.1 installation but still find connection speed to be like a yo yo unless I'm in line of sight with the router at a distance of 6'~8'.

At the line of sight 8' position in my apartment I'm almost always at 866.7 Mbps speed with 5 green bars in the Windows Network Monitor.

In a non line of sight position further from the router going through steel reinforced cement walls it can be anywheres between 95Mbps and 702Mbps.

So if any one knows how to get the 2 to work together it would be awesome if you explained what you did..
